The wax covered the stick and the turppentine is trapped inside the stick. Break the stick into and light the broken ends where the spark gets to the turpentine first. I make these a lot and that's what works for me

Yeah fire plugs are still my favourite but just trying something new
I have been looking into Faux-Fatwood recipes and I think the best one is to use melted wax and let the wood soak it up.
That’s a good little homemade fire starter.
