Creating an AXOLOTL aquascape for our FOUR underwater salamanders

- It's that time of year again where we need to bring our axolotls in from their summer residence in the much cooler garage and bring them inside for the winter where they can stay a little warmer. This is the first time our axolotls have appeared on the channel, even though we've had two of them for over seven years.
I got Katie to help me aquascape this new 354 litre aquarium, as the axolotls are more hers than mine. The aquarium came out really well and the little dudes are loving it! I cannot wait to see it grow in... as long as they leave all the plants alone for long enough for them to actually root!
Massive shout out to @NTLabsOfficialSite for their awesome range of liquids and foods that keep our Amphibians happy and healthy.

Picked up a purple hoodie. Good job, Katie!
Yep he works at MD’s studio now I believe!
aww! it was so cool to meet Katie...will you continue your videos on this channel once you get going with MD?? (I personally sure hope so) Brilliant as always, cheers Matt.
Absolutely I will, the two channels will work alongside each other with me being more information based and MD being more scaping based. They should work very well together.
perfect. I will miss seeing you at the Fish Shop though, but I support you heading in directions that are better for you. @@FishShopMatt
@@mountainhobbit1971 there will be a lot of customers I will miss talking to. I will still be there from time to time, recording and working but it will certainly be less frequent.
Thanks for introducing us to Katie, you guys make a nice couple.
Thank goodness I'm so happy to read that ❤
Best video yet! Hi Katie! Thank you so much for supporting Matt in his YT adventure. Love the chaos, so real life. Best wishes.
Thank you!!!
Great video... I loved that Katie and Quin were a part of this one. I loved seeing Katie working along side of you. I enjoy the realness of the video, you kept it real when the dogs came in and when Quin joined in. It was so much fun watching this video and can't wait to see more with the Fish Shop Family :)
Thank you so much, really kind of you!!!
I haven't enjoyed an aquarist video lately as I did this episode. Absolutely real and loved meeting your wife and family, even the dogs....fabulous! Well done! Tank looks great too 👍
Yay! Katie ,Quinn, doggos and a beautiful tank! What a fun video! ...except greaaaat, now I want axolotls. 😅
Thank you! They're cool!
Super cool, I know next to nothing about axolotl but they look really cute, like underwater dragons! Really nice to meet Katie as well 👋 greetings from Germany
Hey 👋 we will definitely be doing a amphib files for them soon
Awesome video and so nice to meet your family 😊 The Axolotls are so cool, as another commenter said, like underwater dragons! Such gorgeous puppies as well, hope we can see a bit more of them too ❤
Thank you so much 😁
Brilliant Matt... Loved seeing the whole family in this one... I hope Fish Shop Katie joins you more often... Wonderful video once again... Cheers from Texas my friend... 😊🍻😎🤙
So good to finally meet Katie! I feel her pain about having short arms. lol I get the sleeves of my t-shirts wet all the time.
Hahahaha yeah she regularly dips her sleeves in a tank
Aww the pups are so beautiful!
Great video, Matt.
Good to meet Katie and the winter home for the axolotls looks totally fab!
Thank you, Matt. That was fun. The plant scape came out beautifully! Hello to Katie from here in California! (My daughter's name is Katie. 🙂) You've got a beautiful family, mate.
Hey 👋 thank you!!!
Katie is lovely!
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for being yourselves.
aww!! Just the most lovely couple of ppl!! And I loooove axolotls!
welldone Katie welcome to CZcams, nice tank
Thank you! 😀
That chaos, my guy, that's what life is all about 🤩
Another great top Matt 👍! Love it. Fantastic video as always mate
Thank you so much!
Hello Katie :) And I'm so envious of your axolotls, I'd keep them if I wasn't so terrified of them having it too warm during the summers.
You can get an aquarium water chiller to get a cooler temperature for your summers.
@@rickbooher8224yeah for $300 lol😅
It is certainly tricky to keep them cool, that's why we move them to cooler places at certain times.
The tank is absolutely stunning and how nice to had finally meet Katie.
Oh wow! Beautiful build! Thanks again for all the info and good times. 😁😍👍👋
Wow Dalmatians! I haven’t seen one in like a decade. Beautiful family and now beautiful tank! Keep it up mate!
Matt, you're a top guy. I hope it works out with MD. Hope you're not his 'employee' as he says as his channel owes you a lot!
Totally want to hug your doggies!
I was worried you might not do any more solo content now that you are full time with MD. I like MD but I also love your solo content please keep it coming!
Look! They have the most popular by sheer volume car in the world. They have it in the red and yellow combination which, interestingly, is the same colour as the one I purchased of my son more than two decades ago. The one they have is an updated version from the one we had. Ours did not have eyes. Good to see that they keep improving the vehicle.
One thing about the car is that it doesn't use petrol. It will go seemingly forever on a single bowl of sugary food. Any sugary food will do it really. And if you don't have any sugary food, any food will do. Another fascinating feature is that you don't need to put the food in the car. Instead, you put it in the driver! Now that's a fine conveyance. It does have some minor drawbacks. For example, the headlamps don't work, nor do the indicators. That seems not to be a trouble though, as I have never seen a driver of one of these ever indicate a turn.
This car's specs are mind blowing. It can do 0 to 1MpM (metre per minute) in under a giggle. Depending on the driver, it might have a propensity to run into walls and pedestrians though. This is generally not a problem though, since the car is built to withstand those sorts of collisions, even if the domicile and pedestrians are not.
Hold on... This seems to be about aquariums and axolotls. My error. Please forgive, won't you? I will say, the shirt design is first rate. It seems that Katie is quite the artist. If that ever makes it onto some merch, I could see myself wearing it.
Katie mentioned that the fish tanks were why they don't have carpet. That's actually a good thing, since those cars don't handle very well on carpet. All around great choice, Katie! I like your style! Also, I must complement you on the art on the walls. Did you create any of those, or do you just have good taste? I also approve of the land animals. Anyone who cares for multiple types of animals is as good as they come in my book. It's also great to have animals if you have kids. Children who have animals in their lives will grow up to be animal lovers. That is, unless you're treating children as pets too. Things tend to go off the rails a bit for those who only feed, water, and provide a minimal shelter for children. They need so much more than that if they are to thrive.
Pro tip: If you want to keep your children little, just put bricks on their heads. Otherwise they will grow up, and leave home before you know it (Disclaimer: This pro tip has never been tested. We are not responsible for any problems which may arise as a result of using this pro tip, including (but not limited to) injury or legal intervention. Use this pro tip at your own risk).
Scientific observation: Dogs are a lot like axolotls. They will put anything small enough to fit in their mouth into their mouth, chew it, and sometimes eat it. I used to be a professional musician, and a professor of music. Long ago, I had a dog who was generally a very good dog, and quite smart. She was definitely smarter than I am/was. I had been practicing on my Moek rosewood soprano recorder, which was very expensive as recorder pricing goes. I had a concert engagement to go to, so I put the recorder down on a shelf, grabbed my viola, and left for the concert venue. When I returned, I found splinters of unidentifiable origin all over the floor. I promptly swept them up, then started going through the flat to see what wooden object had been destroyed. Though I hadn't said anything, my dog was acting very guilty, and was leaning into a corner making herself as small and un-noticeable as she could, which wasn't working very well, since she was a large dog. I finally worked my way back to the practice room, were I saw the shelf which I left my recorder on broken down, and the recorder, valued at over two thousand pounds, gone. It was only then that I realized what all those splinters had been. She had properly chewed that recorder beyond recognition like an ordinary stick. I blame myself, not the dog. I should have stopped a little earlier, cleaned the instrument, and put it in its case. She could have give that case a right good chew and not put a scratch in it. Imbecilic owner. Where do they get people like that?
Another question: if axolotls will swallow anything they can get in their mouths, how do they survive in the wild? This is the type of question which keeps me up at night, and which modern science must address. If they don't we may see the extinction of axolotls in the wild. Or not. Depending on what modern science discovers.
I understand Katie's difficulty in working with the aquariums. The ones which come with stands are invariably made too tall for women to work in easily. I've had the same problem. We are at the perfect level to view them afterward, but it is quite difficult. Footstools are stationary, so you don't have the freedom to move around if needed. It also makes it a bit more difficult to do some of the cleaning, such as getting disgusting stuff off of the bottom. Besides, it's disgusting stuff. That's what husbands are for. They seem to be immune to disgusting stuff, and are sometimes entirely oblivious to it. But if you show them the disgusting stuff, and tell them it's disgusting, they will usually clean it up. Eventually. You can usually tell what kind of pet human a man will make before you decide to get one. All you need to do is visit his flat unexpectedly, and if the dishes in the sink are under three days old, the bed is made, the floor hoovered, and everything is neatly put away, give up. He's probably gay. If on the other hand, the place looks like London after the Blitz, run away or soon your nest will look the same. You want a pet human man who was trained (usually by his mother) to put things away and hoover the floor without argument if you point out to him that it's a mess. It's also a good find if you can get an adult male pet human who is handy. Matt has demonstrated his usefulness in that department. Looks like you have a good find, Katie.
It was good to see the driver of the car. He seems to be a very well behaved little one, and was not at all the little terror which Matt suggested he might be. Matt's got more than great aquariums. So very much more. He's got great family. I would bet that he's a right fine dad too. What a lucky lot they are. It was just as good seeing them and how they get on as it was seeing the aquarium build. Super video! Super video.
Keep at it Katie. You make me feel like I'm not the only one.
Lovely comment!❤
Welcome to the channel Katie! So excited that Fish Shop Matt will still be creating his own content (with his pretty Katie), and also joining MD. Best of luck guys
Soo excited to meet the Mrs. 🥰 and love seeing your axolotl’s, I haven’t had mine for 4 years now, so I have really enjoyed watching yours
Such a pleasure to meet Katie and to see Quinn!
Love the Axolotls!! They're awesome. Great to meet Katie too, thought she did a great job in her first video ❤
Awesome video, thank you!
The scape looks lovely but I was mostly focused on how you two seem like a wonderful couple :)
Hi Katie, so nice to meet you! I loved seeing Quinn and the sweet doggies too. The scape is gorgeous and I’m fascinated by the Axolotls. I’d love to learn more about them. I’m so excited for more videos from you, here and with MD. Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much, lots more content to come.
Congrats on the channel Matt. I'm glad that you have your own form of expression now but I hope we'll still see some appearances on MD as well. I love the Ron Mclean / Don Cherry banter.
Been raising axolotls for years. Olathe, Kansas . If you have any questions just ask..
Amazing tank and beautiful creatures, love to see them, nice variety. That golden one with the red fins is GORGEOUS. 🙂
I love your dogs, I think it's cool when they are on 😁🐾🐾 Great to see your wife. 🙋♀️ This was fun to watch.
Loved this video. Great seeing the whole family
fun video, and a beautiful scape
Wooo, how cool! I love how the dogs keep on interrupting - keeping it real 😂❤️
I do find it funny that they interrupt but after the 10th time it does get annoying hahaha
@@FishShopMattMaybe you could do a care video on them and fish in your other tanks? Where they are from, compatibility, potential breeding, ease of keeping, feeding etc? Your a pro on fish and their care in the end :)

Great video Matt. We have a axolotl here in Arizona and keeping it cool was a challenge before we bought our chiller. This video has inspired me to redo his tank.
Yeah the cooling is the hardest! Good luck on the rescape.
Another lovely scape Matt 👏 nice to see Katie join you and the little one doesn't look so little anymore! 💪
As much as I loved you axolotls and learning more ready for us to have our own.........when are you down for a hero quest battle? Lol
I still play it regularly with friends.
Was really cool to watch this as I have an axolotl and was thinking of getting her a mate in my 200L tank. Inspired me to try a nice scape for it! Been enjoying your content with MD for ages and I can see your future together being really bright! All the best mate!
Katie looks like she is a wonderful woman, you are a lucky man. Fantastic and fun video. Looks like chaos.
Hey Matt love the videos keep it up!!
Thank you! Definitely more to come!
Brill family vlog mate! Dogs and Katie. Love it mate.

Beautiful scape, axolotls are some of the the most interesting animals to watch. Videos just keep getting better and better. Well done 🎉
Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed the relaxed way you and Katie work together. Keep up the work with both of you, and your dogs are beautiful, oh yeah, Quin is cute too.
It was so awesome to see your wife finally! You are beautiful with your awesome curly hair and wonderful smile! You’re son is also beautiful!!! Love you all!!! Keep doing all the awesome videos!
Hello Fish Shop Katie. Those little water lizard things are weird-looking. Look forward to the "Fish" files you do on them to learn a bit more. Have a good one! 👍
Thank you!
What a great video and beautiful tank setup. Love that you and Katie has a passion for the fish hobby.
Love your chaos! Dogs, Wife, Quinn, Children’s toys, Fish tanks, axolotl‘s, a happy home! Lovely tank build! Are axolotl‘s like turtles where they’ll shift tank items around? I know they have become quite popular but I know next to nothing about them.
Thank you, they aren't as destructive as turtles but will happily move plants.
The timing of this is funny, I started the year researching axolotls for my 5 year old, decided they were complicated, then went to multiple tanks with bettas, gouramis, angelfish, etc. across them. Now it’s October and I’m back to considering adding an axolotl tank. 😂 I love your channel, and might finally do it!
Great video and set up. Lovely meeting Katie and seeing Quinn once again. Thank you.
So glad I found you and your channel Matt! Love your enthusiasm! Really exited to follow you and MD's future endeavours! Really nice scape, and also so fun to see the axolotls thrive!
I reckon Katie is going to be a YT natural once she gets over her nerves! Love your vids, and love your dogs!

Thank you so much, I reckon she will be quite good eventually.
this is so adorable! Thanks for letting us in with your family, the dogs, everything! Really enjoying this channel!
Matt, I`ve been following you since Covid with MD. And you normally knows your stuff. So I have forwarded this video, unseen, to a young coworker, whom soon is getting a axelot. Her first tank. I don`t have any clues about axelots, just freshwater fishtanks, so keep up you good job. 👍😊
My husband and I totally enjoyed today’s video! Loved seeing katie and Quin (Katie is a natural!)

I need that shirt! Nice to meet you, Katie. What a lovely family! I loved this video. I have been wanting one of these guys but I was told a planted tank was a no-no. I would love to see updates on this tank.
