In this video I'm building a Hobbit House for my Axolotl Harry. He is a gfp axolotl that glows under blacklight. I built him a hobbit hole so he can survive and feel safe in his freshwater aquarium home. I've seen people build hobbit house in Minecraft and I wanted to build one IRL for my minecraft axolotl.

When you're making an aquascape, it's usually important to replicate a natural environment for the animal(s). An artificial one isn't really going to hurt the fish, but also in the case of an axolotl, where it's endangered, it might be a better idea to make the tank more natural. But the most important thing of course is making sure you take excellent care of the animal. I love the video!
wild axolotls are functionally extinct. pet axolotls are very very genetically different from wild axolotls and are not endangered at all as they’re incredibly popular in the pet trade

@@hooktraining3966 sure, but current pet axolotls mostly come from a group that was brought to france in the 1800s and bred in captivity. then a few decades ago some captive lotls were crossbred with tiger salamanders to increase the genetic diversity, so they’re not entirely the same as wild axolotls
It’s also how you keep endangered species alive
I have a tip: if you feed harry live food like for example worms then replace the substrate with lego baseplates. You read that right. It gives them something to grip onto so they don’t slip

The point of an ecosystem is to have enough plants, bacteria and animals for it to run naturally with minimal human action. Of course you can make an ecosystem with plastic, but I don't see much plants for water filtration, nor snails or shrimps, or little fish, etc. In a proper ecosystem, you don't have to feed anyone, because they can already find everything they need in the aquarium. It's a balance to find. This isn't an ecosystem. It's a fun aquarium for an axolotl, but it's not capable of running alone if this person's house runs out of elecricity/food. That's why it's not an ecosystem

I like the conservation message from this channel. Education is so important to promote responsible owners, and to not upset natural ecosystems. Other animals that there are more of in captivity vs wild is red wolves, and the Mexican grey wolf.

ok so im not going to claim to know anything about water but i do know that fans just blow air around and it doesnt affect the temperature. its possible that your house's thermostat is set to 75-76, but that particular room isnt doing a good job with trapping cool/hot air so just in case i would get a chiller since i heard chicago can get pretty hot
It affects the water temperature by rising the level of evaporation. The evaporation is what actually decrease the temperature
I have a live planted axolotl tank with Neocaridina shrimp and neon tetra fish. The axolotl can catch fish or shrimps but providing plenty of space at the rate they breed works perfectly in my experience. I just changed the substrates from fine sand to fluval stratum now that my axie is larger and i’m pretty sure won’t eat the rocks much at all. I had to hang rocks in my aquarium avatar style to create middle ground hides for the fish or else the axolotl eats them all.
Black sand can cause micro cuts on their skin which can lead to infection! I used to have black sand with mine as well but quickly changed it after learning this. The best sand to use is CaribSea super naturals moonlight. It’s super fine so you can see their foot prints and trails and safe for them!
You need a bigger tank for all that stuff!

It always struck me as fascinating that axolotls can live in Xochimilco, which is one of the most polluted waterways in the world, but yet if you take them out of Xochimilco they have to be super cared for or they will die.

Ok I need help
So I found a bunch of baby axolotls yesterday while crawdad trapping in a pond behind my house that dries up for months at a time
They only about 2 and a half inches long and when u accidentally caught one I decided to keep it so it won't die when the pond dries but I have no money to be special foods for it
I know older ones eat worms but even if it was big enough to eat the night crawlers I keep to fish with my crawdads would get to the worm first

What do I feed it
Axolotls only live in a few big lakes near Mexico City.
If you found them in a pond that frequently dries out, it’s most likely that you found salamander larvae.
It’s probably best for them if you leave them in the pond since they will quickly grow up and them live on land for the rest of their lives.
If the pond dries up within the next few weeks, you can inform a environment protection group and then they can help the little salamanders, but as long as it doesn’t dry up, they will do just fine in the pond.

Does it glow naturally or is it a special genetically modified one?
It's an albino axolotl that is genetically modified by using genes from jellyfish or corals. Same principle as glowfish.
Also they aren't legal everywhere for example the EU bans any genetic modified animals so we don't have glowfish or glow in the dark axolotls.

That tank has too much light and too much current... Axolotls require almost no light because they can't blink and extremely low current because higher current damages their gill fibers. He should also have something to help the water stay below 65 degrees f.

there is no such thing as hydrating your body faster by just drinking other water because the water is still the same amount still has the same amount of liquid every kind of water hydrates at the same rate
It would be better to use live plants and rocks as his decor instead
As someone that has polypterus that are only slightly smarter as axolotls plants can be a real struggle. These animals don't actively destroy them like cichlids would but they will climb into them and lay on them to the point off uprooting or damaging the plants.
