Matt's labor priceless
engine swaps and the first start ups are so rewarding
Considering you did an entire engine swap...and a decent sized one with lots of fiddly bits...all by your lonesome, you did exceedingly well...good job Sir!
Mid 90s to early 2000s is when automotive technology hit its peak anything after that was needless add ons or needless govt regulations
I feel the same way about anything post 1972
@AnarchoSynCope as someone who owns and works on a 2000 civic and now a 2003 CRV yeah they are easy to work on and cheap to get parts for given how many are made. CIvics though aren't great for those without tiny hands.
Well put
It's like after 2005 everyone thought taking cues from BMW, VW and Mercedes was a great idea.
exactly, anything after 3000BC is nonsense technology. we should all be hunting with rocks and sticks, dying of cholera and the common cold. Why would someone ever want a little more comfort?
"Nothings on fire yet." ROFFL.........
Nice! She's a ripper! The Fluid Film is a good call. I've had a few older Jeeps I was afraid to put on the lift due to frame rot.
Dude your Channel rocks..... I love to see you supporting other CZcams creators
He did an awesome job....Now time to go see what Wes is doing lol!
I had an 89 Cherokee. Loved that beater..death by body rot did it in...great in snow and fun to drive
I never miss a post on your channel, Wes.
I did the fluid film today.... boy the safety Sally’s are gonna stroke out.
As the owner of a 1996 XJ, that's a steal. Take that thing off road as it is today. You'll be surprised at how capable it is. Then do a few mods like lift, tires and lockers and you'll have an unstoppable beater with a heater.
The foil on the injectors was to help with heat soak. It's a known issue where if you turn the engine off and let it sit for awhile then do a hot start the fuel in the injectors and fuel rail was vaporized. It'll stumble and lose power for a moment until fresh fuel is sucked up.
Absolutely worth $900. Cherokee's are getting harder and harder to find, especially 4x4. Take care of it and it'll outlive you! I've got a '96 with nearly 300k miles on the original engine and transmission and it's still going strong.
Look at Matt’s off road recovery on youtube,to see what you can do with that Jeep and a yankum rope
I’d love to see this Jeep get the yellow banana treatment! It’ll be unstoppable.
I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things but one of the first things I'd do now that it's running is try to get rid of all those hideous pinstripes
I actually don’t hate them and typically I do hate stuff like that but I will probably paint it at some point so I’ll worry about it then
I like the pinstripes.
Are those pinstripes factory? If so, I'd leave them.
You simply amaze me is there not nothing you can do & are my most watched channel. You’re my go to I think I pretty much watched every video that you ever put out in the entirety and I hit the light button on them. Great job keep up the good work…..Tiny Houston MS ( Len Price )
As someone who is in no way mechanical, i always find these videos of your fascinating. Love seeing how it all comes apart and works.
Thank you very much!
The Yankum Ropes have been featured on Matt's Off Road Recovery channel. Matt Winder showcases these ropes to their fullest advantage out in the Utah badlands. I'm glad to see them featured here. By another 'Matt', no less!

It must be a great feeling to be able to install another engine into your vehicle. You say you are happy , and so you should be because that is quite an achievement on what is going to be an every day workhorse for you. Awesome job Sir 👍 Tam.
It's largely straight forward in most rwd applications, read your manual, get your necessary bits together and get on with it, building engines is definitely a real skill but basic fitting isn't that difficult as a rule.
@@rogerfrancis65 Oh okay Sir Merry Christmas 🎄 to you 👍 Tam.

$883 cost and $2000 labor by you, not a bad deal. Those Pennsylvania back roads look just like the roads I have where I live in Western new York State. We have about the same amount of snow as you have. I really enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing it.
Hey Matt, your channel is killer and you've just passed Andrew Camarata's channel as my favorite in my books!!
I usually would fast forward an engine swap video but not your stuff, you comment at the right time, time laps exactly when you need to and the whole video is worth watching. You have talent my friend, keep doing exactly what you're doing and you will be at 500k+ in under a year!
Wow thats a huge complement! thanks so much and I hope you are right!!
@@DieselCreek You're welcome, looking forward to the next video! :)

I have to fast forward WAY too much on Andrew's, but not ole Matthew's!! I don't think I've EVER fast forwarded a Diesel Creek video...
A little know how, a good amount of elbow grease, and a whole lotta swearing later and you jave a great winter vehicle. Proof that Anyone can get a good project finished, even if its by themselves. If that new 4.0 really only had 10k on it, it will outlast that old Cherokee body. Even with the odds and ends to make it good and some good tires, I bet this project can be done for $3k or less and serve you well for many winters to come. Thanks for the great videos and inspiration. Now it's time to get out in the garage and put a wheel bearing on myself.
My parents drove a 98 XJ from new until 2017 and sold it running and driving with 378k miles. They will run forever as long as there is something resembling oil in the crankcase and the body isn't rusted in half. Luckily we live south of where they dump salt on the roads so it didn't have a speck of rust. Good luck with your wheel bearing.
The JEEP was fighting back, it was like "why won't you just let me die!?"
Yea it wanted to RIP rust in place ; )
You won't let me live... you won't let me die.....
Old (73) guy here... always change out water pump and check the timing chain, ask me how I know LOL

Invested $883? No, I say spent $883. No argument, money well spent, many years of use to come with good under carriage care. Overall well done, thanks for the video!
The aluminum foil is a quickie heat shield to keep the injector from causing vapor lock when trying to restart soon after shutdown in hot weather.
Chrysler makes a shield sleeve to make a permanent fix
FYI big fan of the Jeep inline 6 cyl.
I get vapor lock all the time. I need to get the kit and install it already. But it's so damn cold out!

$883 is still a great deal for a sport utility vehicle that you can always build on and make better. Bravo man!!!!!!
Outstanding, Matt. $883 spent, you could sell it for $5k, and the person buying it would be getting a helluva nice XJ. Let me know if you need any help with it - I'm not too far down the trail from you guys.
Foil around the injectors was cheap heatsoak protection.
Not a complaint, more of a FYI if you didn't know- rough audio desync on this one Matt.
I came to the comments to mention the same. 😂
Glad it wasn’t just me. I restarted the video a couple of times with no luck.
you kids back in my day everything wasn't in sync like the porn scene would be over and there's still audio 2 minutes left over from the scene
@@BangBangBang. hahahaha. 🤣
@@BangBangBang. most kids today don’t know what a vcr is. I think I remember there being some kind of thing you could adjust on a vcr to sync the audio and video. My grandparents had a vcr when I was a kid and I think I remember them having to adjust that from time to time. Maybe I’m mistaken. But I def remember watching some videos on a vcr and the audio would be completely off from the movie. 😂
That's a Win, not too shabby at all.
I always ran rotella 15w40 in my 2000 cherokee. Seemed alot happier when I switched over to that oil and got rid of that lifter tick.
The guy who sold it to you gives you a call and wants to buy it back from you, because you fixed everything
210 is what is should be running at I believe. I’ve owned a Cherokee and a wrangler with the 4.0 and both ran at around that. A few buddies also have Cherokees like this. Theirs run at 210 as well
My '87 4.0 runs a consistent 190.
Matt, I enjoyed watching you getting that 99-Jeep running true and proper! You are a genius!
Well done, Matt!
Awesome. Under $1000 for a decent winter weather rig.
I love how you have the umption and the gumption to take what others would see as trash (be it a vehicle, building or whatever) and help it find new life again! Great job! 👍
Thanks!!
Please replace the foil on those injectors. The strait 6 engines soak heat into the injectors, and once the engine is hot, gasoline starts to boil off in the injectors before it leaves them, causing stumbling in the engine. This is no joke. Put new foil back on!! Or replace it with even better insulation!!
Thing was designed by AMC back in the early 80's and never really had any updates. Chrysler did add heat shields at some point though.
Modern electronic fuel injection doesn't like heat. But given that the 4.0 is a redesigned AMC 4.2 that was originally carbureted and made with a pencil and slide rule the carburetor required heat to run well.
did Matt not change the maifolds over and is now running with a carburator
@@richardspringthorpe8176 no he is running fuel injection. What he swapped was an earlier model fuel injection and ignition system vs the updated 03 and up coil on plug setup. It's a throttle body design regardless.
The heat soak isnt that much of an issue thats a problem of people who dont know hpw to properly maintain their vehicles
Definitely a car worth keeping! Sold my 96 XJ at 308,000 miles and miss it every day.
$883 - is a heck of a deal for a running, driving - and stopping - 4WD vehicle in reasonably presentable shape in my view. The key thing is that much of what it still needs is doable at pretty low cost and you can pick away at it as time is available. You’re on the road and moving for well under $1K - that is a steal of a deal.
Good job with the engine change. FYI: 210* on the thermometer is normal for the 4.0L XJ
Can confirm, 210 is ideal for the 4.0.
Yep both of mine ran there for the 12 years I had them.
I always cringe whenever anyone attempts to weld castings... Never works for long and when it breaks again, the damage is much worse.. Braze is almost always the way to go... Lower temp process, less distortion, about 80% as strong in tensile, but much more ductile, so it flexes vs just snapping. If you can't TIG or oxyfuel, you can get it as a MIG wire as well...
I'm pretty sure the one piece manifold he welded up Is not cast iron but steal.
@@jamesmullen4308 Doesn't matter.. While steel castings are definitely more weldable, they are still brittle and the change in alloy in the weld zone can make them even more prone to breakage after the weld. Braze is still the best choice IMO.. Try it the next time you're at the welding/gas supply- get them to hook you up with a small spool of bronze MIG wire. Uses reverse polarity and pure argon as shielding. I also started with a small 2 lb spool but I found it just the most versatile general repair filler and use it so much that I bought another machine with big spools of bronze wire so I don't have to keep changing the polarity and gas to swap between welding and brazing.
@@jamesmullen4308 Yep, it looks like steel, not cast iron so he's good.
i had some headers welded one time but they were stainless and they were better than new at the Y's
Those arent castings in any way shape or form. Jeep 4.0 "Manifolds" are steel tubing!!
I have 249000 on my 2001 Cherokee. Never misses a beat.
I'm a ham radio operator & sounds are a special trait we listen to signals from around the world & can tell if something is out of tune with electronics like cars driving past !
Nice! I love older Jeeps. They were great in those years when the company was less flashy and more business. The new Jeeps have given me nothing but problems and I think Stellantis needs to be better to FCA or Fiat needs to stand their ground to make sure all of Jeep doesn't get "Porter Cable'd". We can already see it happening with that dreaded Italian diesel engine they push In their smaller vehicles instead of going with a Cummins diesel
@AnarchoSynCope Back in the late seventys the Army had a bunch of ALLIS-CHALMER bucket loaders.when the engines started failing,The only replacement engine available was a Fiat diesel. We had a new engine put in one of our machines, the damn engine failed after about 40 hours.I never was a Fiat fan, that did nothing to change my mind.
My Insurance company use to have me bring my cars in to see them (they could not belie I could buy a car for $300 that was road legal) Good Job
How would your insurance company know what you paid?
Pay no mind to the age of a Jeep. My '94 had over a 250,000 miles on it when I sold it and it was still running strong. You got a great deal there!
I only have 200,000 on my 1987 Cherokee 4.0. I gotta get caught up!
I always change the water pump for just that reason. Learn as you go my friend. Great deal on a Jeep.
Matt good call on leaving the manifolds off. The motor just dropped in.

You did well Matt, all by yourself, in a fairly cramped space. First time I've seen Yankum Ropes sponsor a video. I've seen them being used/abused on Matt's Offroad Recovery and they seem to be a great product - certainly a suitable sponsor for Diesel Creek.👍👌😁
Matt lift her up. Put on some flares and you have a killer Jeep! She’s a keeper that body looks really good.
Bigger tires are the best investment. Those little cars are just fantastic in the snow with beefy tires.
My Cherokee always ran at about 200-210 too.
Nice job! Nothing stops you but a stop sign!!
The coolant temp for those engines normally is 210 we just sold our old Jeep couple years ago and that’s what it always ran at. It was a lost cause because of all the rust it had but it ran good it had 128,000 miles on it
My 98 has almost 300k miles on it and still running great. But, the rockers are rusted out, the wipers only run on high, and the heater fan only works on full chooch. She’s showing her age, but the drivetrain is just fine....
@@notajp Watch Wes work could fix everything but the rust 🤣
Ah' the old Jeep lifter tic tic!!!
Lifter tic or piston slap😂
Mopar injector tick. Definitely in the top 5 for loudest injectors.
Great job and well worth spending money on older vehicles that you can fix rather than new ones you can not!
My old jeep Cherokee would over heat but a 12 volt switched electric fan took care of that . Just had to remember to shut the switch off when I parked . LOL I stood that ol' jeep straight up , straight down, over rocks , through sand and snow . The 4.0 finally died due to me doing dumb things ( 300,000 miles on it ) but the transfer case lives on in my brother jungles jeep ! Jeep forever !
I hope the front seal on the transmission doesn't start leaking. It's a good idea to replace it when splitting engine and transmission apart after being together a long time.
No in an aw4 you have to disect almost half of the tranny to change that seal
The rear main on the engine is more likely to leak than the trans.
I call it an automatic oil change , you never gotta change the oil in the motor since you gotta keep adding new oil 👌
Love seeing your excitement when it all comes together. I root for you all the way. Your tenacity is impressive.
Hi.Matt. i have done alot of R&R with components from donation parts. FYI I always would replace the water pump - tune-up parts - hoses - belts - filters - clutch and pressure plate throwout and pilot bushings (if manual)with new or rebuilt parts. It saves alot of backtracking. IE water pump. Hope this info helps.
Really satisfying build!
Damn. This ending footage makes me wanna take my 98 XJ out for a drive
And me my 96. All I need is some time to work on it!
That stock exhaust manifold looks like a aftermarket header. H. P. Looking factory Jeep stuff!
Now turn it into a green version of the Yellow Banana! You already have the Yankum rope!

The Cherokee is a neat little truck. My 95 was put back together after a head-on collision before I bought it, then put back together when recovered after being stolen and driven until the engine blew up... the result was persistent cooling system and transmission problems, so I gave it up...
Jeep had a 3 speed automatic that just didn't like running between 35 and 45 mph - probably part of the overheating problems. The fan wasn't any prize either.
You'll definitely benefit from getting the spare out of the cargo space - Jeep made a couple of different rear bumper swing gate designs over the years, one or two of which were actually good. I got lucky in a junkyard one day when I also scored new front seats.
The other thing is that aside from the engine bay, almost everything else on the truck is readily accessible for wrenching.
Undercoating is a must. I've heard third hand that Jeep has an odd spec for their sheet metal and spot welding procedures, leaving them vulnerable to rusting.
You'll have fun with this.
The engineers don't think about repair or rebuild very often, at least from my experience.
That was an awesome cost for something in that decent of shape
now when you get the steering parts/brakes all replaced remember this is a beater...have some fun and myself and a few associates are doing something about quieting the rides and closing stuff up and rust proofing....mustie one does bar chain oil looks effective....i started seeing the weak spots where rust gets started and have much success with 9lb expanding closed cell foam door and window grade...minimal expansion an totally repels water some namely less than 9 lb foam absorbs water but 9 lb repels it and substantially when you kill the water and wind blown intrusion the rust stops and the rides are substantially quieter...couple of cans try it out you wont be disappointed
drill a 1/4 to 5/16 hole and fill the gaps
around door frames and if windows clear in doors as well not to much but some and put straws through the foam for drainage when gaskets leak in rain it will drain out through the pvc straws and tubing...not to much means windows and linkages clear for smoother operation and the foam does add a bit of unitized strength...the sturdy feel is nice...
once foam cures make sure the drains are clear with a piece of wire or nail no water laying in door seams kills rust dead and quiets the vehicle substantially....adds years t the body with out much cost easy fast and dirty...all high end models do fill their panels with the foam for as little as possible making their rides much much quieter is well a comfort and added insulation values for temperature zones
Nice job! Glad you got the new water pump. Those look like aftermarket headers. Figure what your labor is worth vs just buying a new/used front fender. Matt, you’re the man!
always a compelling show of details to fix mechanical stuff, just get the tools out and start turning wrenches
Watching you work reminds me that it takes me a week to do what I used to do in a day.

I have a '98 Cherokee that I bought used almost 19 years ago. The 4.0L is still going strong--one of the best inline-sixes ever made. Jeep's weak spot has always been electrical issues. Over the years, I've replaced almost every single major electrical component on mine. Aside from that, the '97-'02 years of the Cherokee were some of the best 4WDs ever made. By the way, very normal for the 4.0L to operate at almost 200° F. coolant temp. If the block isn't damaged on the old engine, they can be rebuilt pretty readily--there is a good market for rebuilt 4.0s, particularly the later versions (the "H.O" version).
