- In this episode of Raw Craft Anthony Bourdain heads to Providence, Rhode Island to meet with luthier Rachel Rosenkrantz, to learn how she makes handcrafted custom guitars. Rachel left a successful career in product design to start her own small business making tailored string instruments for musicians from her home studio, Atelier Rosenkrantz. Rachel is introduced to Andy Rourke, bassist for English rock band, The Smiths, to create an original electro acoustic bass guitar, later used in the making of the score for Raw Craft, along with composer Timothy O’Keefe. Each instrument is thoughtfully designed and built to last a lifetime. Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer. Music by Tim O'Keefe & Andy Rourke.
The Balvenie Distillery alliance with craft is a result of the brand’s choice to embrace the old way. Balvenie is dedicated to the process of using the five rare crafts of Scotch whisky making to create The Balvenie’s distinctive taste and exceptional quality. It is the only distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional malting floor, employs coopers to tend every cask, a coppersmith to maintain the stills and a malt master to ensure the resulting spirit is consistently excellent.

Tony was a master storyteller. While some “personalities” diminished some people and cultures for the sake of humor, Bourdain never did. He always seemed to honor the people he was interviewing. Thank you to The Balvenie people (and AB) for this series. I love it. I’m heading out for a bottle of the Balvenie to toast you guys. Well done. RIP to Anthony. God, you’re missed.
"Hey look, this TV gig can't last forever." 😢 You'll be missed.
she has a natural talent thats for sure. and a passion for making, design, and music...one of the best episodes ive watched
she's great. she's got a great soul, her eyes show how engaging she may be.
...and beautiful inside & out!
Rachel's smile says it all. The passion, the care and craft of someone following their convictions and purpose aligned with their core values. A thing of beauty indeed!

I hope whoever ends up with this guitar knows how blessed they are to have Anthony sign it!
Such a lovely woman.
The way she smiles and laughs.
The sweat under her arms..
The best part was seeing how excited she was to watch him see the instrument for the first time. Seeing that it is easy to understand why she left the rat race to make guitars.
That smile....priceless
Tony was a great storyteller...!!!

Man, I miss Tony. What a great man. Fabulous show.
All of these episodes are remarkable but, this is the most moving one, for me. Well done.
Loved her philosophy on why she does this instead of working for a large engineering firm or something else. Wish there were more people like her in the world.
theres no way you can't love both of these humans.
Her smile at the end says it all! What a beautiful soul
When Andy Rourke walked in I was like "I've seen that person somewhere; oh yeah, Johnny Marr's concert lollapalooza 2015 Brazil." just awesome, love the smiths
I have been playing Guitar (Electric/Acoustic) for around 30years now and Every time I watch or read about any type of guitar building I get extremely inspired and excited , ive always wanted to learn how to build an Electric Guitar , its the ultimate in a personalized instrument , the player has built what he wants , to look like and sound like and feel like.
Mr Bourdain expressing his passion. Such a shame we have now lost someone who gave so much to so many RIP and have a better one next time round.
Amazing how masters make their craft look easy.
Passion for your Craft, Is a thing of Beauty as you can see in her smile. Worth a million bucks or if you take money out of the equasion, Peace of Heart. Thanks for showcaseing her !
I am blown away. Absolutely phantastic what this lady is producing with her hands. Wow.
Sure do miss AB, what a great voice and story teller. Heartbreaking and I didn't even know him personally.
Had to stop halfway and wipe a few tears for Anthony Bourdain. RIP. Not to take anything away from the Luthier, she has a great soul and such love for her craft. Bravo !
I'm blown away by this woman's talents and beauty.
Anthony Bourdain keeps surprising me with His rich legacy.
Bless His wandering soul, wherever He is.
She is my cousin!! So nice!
Dan Toubiana wow do wish her best from india, she is beautiful, so is her work!
is your cousin single?
A beautiful talent ya cousin has
What,??
aww Andy's reaction to the guitar was priceless! He did his best to keep buttoned up (as a proper Brit should) but you could tell he was blown away.
Magnificent, creating the soul of a new guitar. I've already posted this show on Facebook, as it's one of the very best. There is something so extraordinary about the artist-to-artist relationship; thus, the compelling backstory of closing that loop, which is what Bourdain's episodes are often about. The cooking connection is unmistakeable, especially with hot metal and sparks.
This show is better than coffee on a day off but do go very well all together.
I think I fell in love ... with Rachel. :)
me too, tres jollie!
Yes
So beautiful eyes
Andy Rourke bassist from the Smiths - LEGENDARY!
Rachel’s passion for her craft was so evident. Incredibly gifted artisan.
She is amazing! Great artists and human. Very conscious about her actions and impact in the world. True treasure this artists!
Awesome segment. And the bassist from one of my favorite bands was in it, too. =)
Great show, Rachel Rosenkrantz, is a treasure... RIP AB.
I love the look on his face when he sees his new base for the first time.. then he play's it..amazing!!
Ain’t gonna lie.
I cried..
This particular guitar has suddenly become more valuable
She is absolutely stunning.
I can't wait to share this with my dad, who's a guitar nut. Thanks much for this.
Buy him a guitar instead!
Not one of these, man. I've got responsibilities. Besides, he's got plenty.
I can't imagine what it must feel like to find a job you are so passionate about. Really brave of her to leave the "safe" corporate job behind and follow her dream.
one of the best Raw craft episodes! loved it!
This was Amazing.. I Absolutely love her. I think I'm in love.
Her smile when she sees her clients' joy is priceless.
Great Anthony Bourdain and a beautiful Rachel Rosenkrantz.
Very beautiful and relaxing video. This is where the Magic is happening. ♫ ♪ :)
The extent of my luthiery skills is putting together a Warmoth partscaster. Such a treat to watch that.
TCX Choi Me too love my partscasters on mine the electrical work is excellent and the finish is by Fred Flinstone. At least they sound good
I have a hand made acoustic guitar made by a Luthier in NC...man I love 💕 it. It was made with all the woods I required, fret size, finger board of gaboon ebony, spruce tops and the back with flame maple...I love it. The bracing and enter all structures are mug importance! It is the soul of the guitar!
Yo, I'm flat-out amazed.
Awestruck. Entranced. At a loss for words...
The beauty of her work so perfectly contrasts the blatant difficulty in achieving this level of craftsmanship, with such elegance to make it look effortless.
I'm in love. Lmao.
And she's a college professor?!? Oh, Woe is me. Lmfao...
That is the cleanest, brightest, most pleasant shop I’ve ever seen.
That rectangle he played sounded gnarly af!!!
One of my all-time favorite show. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you!
Anthony, we miss you so.
Like crazy, hard not to tear up a little watching these.
WOW! so awesome, honestly! I'm blown away by her Craft, her artistry, the beauty of the work she puts out, and her all around beauty.
I found this channel today, and am awestruck by the videos. it is so very important to me to continue true craftsmanship, making my Legacy. We are losing craftsmanship to mass production, and that scares my terribly.
Wow. What a beautiful guitar! Loved this episode.
Anthony must be the best companion to have a beer and talk about things in life ! You can tell how much he respects her job! Great show Anthony !
This vid - and all in it , beautiful - Def beautiful !! Bravo !! And RIP Anthony

Thank you for making these. I find them very meaningful.
That guitar just became priceless in June 2018
This show is great. I just started watching these for the 1st time. Knowing what happened to Anthony makes me sad. He really had a great talent for this. He can do any show about anything and he made it so interesting. I loved No Reservations also.
So Brilliant!!! So much talent out there in the world. Never give up on your dreams.
Anthony Bourdain is the Man!!

I have been fortunate enough to meet some real talented women including some of the very youngest. Also "met" some on u tube.
These people cannot be just mediocre, when it comes to work and instantly appreciate others with similar talents.
The gents featured here were genuinely impressed by Rachel.
Good to have someone like her as a friend!

This was great.
What a beautiful shop!
Amazing art Work.Salute to your Lovely Work, Rachel (y)
that was a beautiful bass she made , the looks of a stand up bass with a vintage rock a billy edge to it, very nice !!!!!
That...was...marvelous. Amazing woman, amazing talent
Beautiful!
This sort of passion and commitment blow me away; and as Bourdain would say 'the proof is in the pudding'. With this level of craftsmanship you definitely 'get out of it' what you 'put into it' and as was demonstrated in the video the difference is obvious...It's such a rare thing these days to find someone willing to dive into their passion with all their heart and soul and willing to take the risk of possible failure.... But that is where 'greatness' comes from.
What an art! Amazing ✨🌟
Great tribute to Tony and the Luthier
