- Clean meat - real meat made from animal cells without animal slaughter - and social solutions informed by breakthroughs and historical successes will eventually allow for an ethical and efficient food system where slaughterhouses are obsolete.
“Many books and articles have documented how animal agriculture devastates public health, the environment, and animal welfare. Experts predict that the future of food is vegan. But readers and listeners are left with one burning question: How do we actually get from here to there?” I'm a social scientist currently working on my first book, "The End of Animal Farming." I sometimes write articles in outlets such as in Huffington Post and Vox, and I've given talks in 15 different countries on the topics of effective altruism, animal protection, and food ethics. I'm the Research Director at Sentience Institute, a nonprofit, effective altruism think tank launched in June 2017 focused on expanding humanity's moral circle. We're not currently hiring, but I'm always excited to explore new research collaborations.

@@rijoab insect eating, lowering red meat consumption, curbing wastage by feeding food scraps to livestock..... chicken and turkey are perfect for eating meat/poultry scraps and i know chicken can eat wasted/unused dairy and expanding 3d printing...also lowering average family size with increasing contraceptive/family planning access

Ha, it was a completely one sided talk. That’s fine, but don’t try and claim it’s something that it isn’t. For instance, at the start he threw around a lot of information which was designed to conflate all animal agriculture as being cruel factory farming. It sounded like 99% of animals live in cages and are debeaked etc etc. He used one anecdote of a visit to an organic egg farm to disparage the idea of regenerative farming. I’ve been to regenerative farms and they’re much nicer than grain farms! He fails completely to even pretend to look at things impartially. Get out of the bubble!

Excellent talk, I agree entirely. Factory farms are just the most dark, nightmarish places it is hard to fathom that these places even exist. I keep holding the vision factory farms are over ASAP. All of life is precious, sacred and deserves to be cared for and respected. Meat/dairy is not even healthy, the new US food guide recommends a plant based diet and many leading body builders/other athletes are vegan.
@The Elite Where do you get your facts from? Complete nonsense. Your claim that plants only carry 2% of all essential nutrients is laughable. Irish Sea moss contains 92 of the 102 essential minerals the human body requires. I can name many other nutrient dense plant foods but you seem like the type that wont listen to straight facts.

Great speech! I've been Vegan for 8 years! I really like that you dispel the humane myth, encourage activism, talked about helping all species of animals, and mentioned that this is a Social Justice Movement!

Bravo! I really like Jacy's presentation. I'll look him up. Love the way he rallies us for a goal of truly embracing real morality, without shaming. I believe that this is another great trend, higher moral thinking with diminishing shaming and guilting.

I'm glad this was presented in an educational and non-intrusive way. I'm vegan and I always will be, and I'm doing everything I can to help inform people of the horrid realities of factory farming. My dad worked for a company for 48 years designing machines that package meats and cheeses to make them look pretty and vacuum-sealed for all your local grocery stores, so I’ve seen the results of factory farming first-hand. My dad also ran a screen-printing business on the side. I love and admire my dad very much, and his work ethic put food on our table and clothes on our backs. My dad and I are very close and we have great discussions about his work and the great changes that have been made in vegan foods and in vegan lifestyles. I even turned him on to some great vegan foods. On to the point - the coronavirus is evidence of Mother Nature pushing back at the unsustainability, cruelty, and disease-ridden reality of factory farming. It has nothing to do with god or religion, but everything to do with us and this planet. I support people and organizations that promote vegan lifestyles. However, my problem with PETA is that sometimes they misconstrue information and accost the public in a judgmental and condescending tone that portrays vegans as know-it-all holier-than-thou people. I think people will be more open to hearing about the harsh realities of factory farming when they are treated like respective adults, and not treated as uninformed idiots, which PETA often does. Thank you for providing a professional, informative, nonjudgmental, and educational speech that sheds a bright light on the wretched reality of the exploitation of animals for food, vanity, and entertainment. Revenge may be a dish best served cold, but peace and justice is a dish best served with compassionate and educational discussions.
I would love to see a world without slaugherhouses and animal agriculture. Lets hope it happens soon :)

Factory Farms are sick, and now we have laws trying to prevent people from showing evidence of abuse?!?! This is a horrible world😣😣
They're the same people giving the laws against people speaking out that animal agriculture is the leading cause of greenhouse gasses, see Cowspiracy (excellent documentary that covers this topic).

I buy grass fed and pasture raised animal products whenever I can, but not everyone can afford such a luxury. Hopefully there's a huge paradigm shift in the future and we can find a way to revert back to more ethical ways of livestock.
Great talk! I loved the emphasis on institutional as opposed to individual change. I can't wait to see what happens with this movement going forward - this talk did a great job highlighting that we're in the midst of a really important time in the history of animal welfare and that we can all do our part.
Individual change leads to institutional change
The reason why the organic open field farming meat is expensive is that there are few farms doing it. Once all animal agriculture is at high standards, the prices would drop due to competition.
The more I've looked into organic and free range farming, the more I realise it's not any realistic or sustainable as the other methods. It takes a 1000 gallons of water to make just one bottle of milk. It takes 1766 gallons water to make one pound of beef. The deforestation to rainforest just to grow the grain to feed these cows is obscene: An acre a second! This is why I think vegetarianism, while it's a start, won't be enough, because then people will be eating more fish. Fish is horribly over-farmed as it is, to the point that by 2049 if we continue at the rate we are to meet the demands of 7.6 billions people, the oceans will be fish-free. I highly recommend the documentary Cowspiracy if you've not seen it.

Good to hear that advocates are feeling hopeful ("inflection point"), as (realistic) optimism is really important for a movement. Only a few days ago Britain's biggest producer of caged eggs committed to going cage free. I think the effective altruism approach is vital to find the best ways to spend time and other resources.
This is such a great TedxTalk! Some great points are made, and expressed so clearly. Refusing to participate in animal farming has changed my life for the better in so many ways. For animals, health, and environment.. choosing vegan has a positive impact.
What I find encouraging about this prospect of the end of industrial-scale animal farming is that it doesn't depend on appeal to empathy or environmental concern but merely on the development of clean meat more appealing to the pressing human concerns of quality and cost.
A large-scale industrial farm is a perfect breeding ground for the emergence and spread of influenza viruses. The sheer numbers of animals on industrial farms facilitates the rapid transmission and mixing of viruses.
Jacy's intellectually honest and thoughtful approach to animal advocacy is a model for everyone else who wants to change minds on controversial topics.

Beautiful soul. Thank you for all you do. As many I suffer with animal´s suffering. I can not imagine the minutes , the hours the days , months and years of endless suffering.If i could released them all….
Interesting idea. I'm interested to see where this goes. Ultimately I think plant based eating is the way to go. Those are not our cells to manipulate and consume. I agree that change needs to also be on the institutional level. One day we will shake our heads at the thought that we ever served animals to our children in school cafeterias.

Since factory farms also routinely pollute waterways with animal waste - without any clean up - antibiotic-resistant bacteria are also quickly and efficiently spread into waterways and the meat that consumers eat. These factors make factory farms the perfect breeding ground for antibiotic resistance, a threat that currently kills 700,000 people per year and could kill up to 9.5 million people per year by 2050

Certainly in the developed world this is a problem that is far less sever in the UK; we do have factory farms but they are outweighed by free range - the middle ground.

Not a single mention here about putting them back on the land. Or for that matter how the land is disappearing because the animals are not there.
Why have I only just seen this. I have been vegan for a few years now and at times i admit that I become a "preachy vegan" or one to push my vegan food and morals onto others because of my strong feelings towards animal abuse , animal agriculture. But it hasnt worked much in having other join me. I am so, thankful to have come across this today 💙💙💙💙
Great talk! Love the approach on how animal agriculture is inherently cruel and it’s negative consequences on our planet and our health.
These animals don’t deserve this dreadful life just because they happen to be born a species that is killed as a baby and eaten when we have the option to leave animals off of our plates and still be healthy (usually even healthier).
I believe that tradition, lack of knowledge and fear of change is what keeps people stuck and continuing with the cognitive dissonance that allows them to feel okay about it.
Almost everyone is against animal cruelty and becoming vegan is the solution to aligning our values to our daily actions.
The time has come to break traditions, gain knowledge on this very important topic and be fearless in creating a positive change for all beings and this planet we live on.

Good news! Veganism has risen by 350% in the past decade - It is the future people, let's double, triple, quadruple etc this figure as fast as possible. I've been vegan before, and I am vegan again. Let's save the world one meal at a time.
