  • Rubaiya Ahmad is a former volunteer at a cat rescue programme and zoo in the US, and driven by the culling of her own dog in Dhaka, Rubaiya founded Obhoyaronno -- Bangladesh's Animal Welfare Foundation in 2009. Obhoyaronno is the country's first and currently only animal welfare organization working to end animal cruelty through advocacy, education, and humane programme implementation. Due to Obhoyaronno's persistent advocacy, the government ended dog culling in Dhaka in January 2012 and declared Dhaka as the country's first 'no-cull' city.
    [This talk is recorded on September 21st 2013 at the TEDxDhaka conference at ISD Auditorium in Dhaka, Bangladesh]

At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Amazing woman. When I saw that Bollywood costume, and the smartphone and the restaurant where one meal costs 6-7 grand, I'm just GLAD I never spend money on those stuff :P
    We are never really poor, until we choose to be poor. Animals and plants are just as important as human beings.
    I salute you Rubaiya Ahmed!!

    Does the term "animal rights" mean we're only talking about dogs? Why? Because some of us humans have decided that dogs (or cats) are lovable and intelligent and cuddly etc? Or can we truly look outside of our own narrow perspective at all animals that are victims of untold suffering caused by us?

      +Kadambari Misra She did talk about them because they are the easiest to talk about and start with. I have met her and she was speaking about this at our school and a lot of us asked questions. She replied and told as that she will start work on cats and farm animals too.

      I think it's because she's in India where dogs are not as highly respected as they are in North America and there's many that roam free. This is more of a concern for her and her audience than cows who are more respected in India.

If I'm not mistaking Bangladesh was at some point part of India, having said that due to Hinduism (like she mentioned earlier) their diet is mostly vegetarian. Again if I'm not mistaking, Bangladesh is today majority Muslim but similar foods.

    15:09 the reference to serial predators : men who commit such acts ( against animals in childhood and usually against women later in life ) are acutely aware of what society will allow them to do while it turns a blind eye, these guys exploit social prejudices. At the same time violence against animals is so pervasive that MANY people who engage in it do not 'progress' into multiple murderers later in life. Hunters would be an example. lack of empathy is an important factor in any form of violence

      Humans who hunt other animals for food (and it's not by any accident that I refer to "other" animals here - humans are animals and the sooner we recognise and appreciate the implications of that, the better) tend to have much greater respect for those other animals than do consumers who merely buy meat from supermarkets and are therefore quite disconnected from the life of the animal that sustains them with its flesh. Ignorance is one of the greatest evils of modern consumerist capitalist society - it's what keeps the system running, really. As long as this ignorance persists, we'll be fighting an uphill battle not just for nonhuman animal rights but human rights as well.

    • @billjoe39
      @billjoe39 Před 8 lety +2

      +Sarah Blaquiere'Humans who hunt other animals for food tend to have much greater respect for those other animals than do consumers who merely buy meat from supermarkets' contrast that with: 'we'll be fighting an uphill battle not just for nonhuman animal rights but human rights as well.' Oh the incongruity......seriously ? You are talking about some form of 'pure hunter warriors' that apparently no one has ever seen . Or, more like it, white male drunks humorously bedecked in military gear ( and who never served) traipsing into the woods and endangering both animals and nature lovers alike. What type of respect is that ? THAT is entertainment/blood sports, not food gathering.

      End Wildlife Services'Needless Killing Of Wild Animals Hi, I support your point of view. But I actually didn't want to act like a tough guy. And I think there is nothing about killing animals for food. But I was very frustrated at that moment of these SJW people. I mean how much can I take, they are saying that there are 71 genders of humans and stuff like that. And I wanted to say that many species are getting killed everyday which have nothing to do with human interaction. I know I made a stupid example. I am also against killing animals for sport. We humans are omnivores so we need meat also.

      Clã Jardim Judging from her health, she's probably eating their flesh and secretions almost every meal -- if so, she should definitely have a look into the proverbial mirror, and consider her own actions while she preaches to others -- and if she IS vegan, she sure ought to mention it next time.
