Carson Brown and his dad Duane Brown brought back this Honda CR500 Two Stroke from the grave. What if Honda still made the CR500? This could be the closest thing to what it might look like in 2021. The bike was completely re-done at the BBR Motorsports Headquarters in Washington and built around the premise of a professional supercross/motocross racer riding it. Carson Brown is a current 250 pro and spent a lot of time helping his dad test this motorcycle before they finished. Carson folded the first frame in half! These bikes were not made to do what a rider like Carson can on a dirt bike. We met up with Carson Brown at Mountain View Motocross to watch him ride the CR500 Two Stroke wide open! This video is all about the riding. We will have a behind the build video coming soon with all the details on how it was made. For now, its time to enjoy the sweet sound of a custom Honda CR500 Two Stroke rip around a private track in the Pacific Northwest.

Been riding my CR500s for 20 years now (2001 models). I won't weigh in on the horsepower stuff, but the CR500 power delivery is pretty magical in all types of riding, moto, single track, hillclimb, etc. Most amazing is the durability, one of them I bought new must have 400hours on it. 1st over, 3rd piston, bottom end never touched. Two clutches, just plates and springs, and two carburetors (worn out slide/carb body). Amazing. Rode it about 2.25 hours this weekend getting in shape for Sprint Enduro I'll race on October 10th.
I had a 86’ CR 500 back in 88’ I sold because it was a huge hassle to start. I ended up purchasing a brand new 89’ CR 500. What a world of difference the 89’ was to start. Boy, do I miss the two strokes!!!
No reason to be missing two strokes…they’re better than ever.
Yo I bought one cheap back then cause it was a bitch to start I road the wheels off it✌️
If they actually build it and sell it, I'm picking one up. It takes me back to the 90's as a young teen waiting for dad to buy a new dirt buy and i would borrow it 😉😉.
Even if they did a limited run of say, 1,000 bikes, they would sell out on pre-order allmost instantly.
Please more 500 videos!!! 500s are becoming so popular and are such a treasure to enjoy
Check out ken Kaplan cycle's museum he has hundreds of 500cc 2smokers for sale
@@tightlines106 hundreds of 500s for sale? Hmm I wonder why he spreads the myth that they're more powerful than modern 450s? Hmmmmmm....
@@StrykerV8 prob because its not a myth. Same reason they're still so popular.
@@McNamEvan yeah? Show me a stock cr500 making more than 57hp at the wheel. Should be easy, right?

@@StrykerV8 The bike you put a link to is a WORKS EDITION and costs about $13,000 if you can even get one.. the 500s are so old now you can't find them stock. But if you want to compare apples $13,000 can easily get you 60+ rwhp out of a 500. The link is for a simple '97 cr500 build that makes about 60 at the wheel.. czcams.com/video/CwmsO7d9jCI/video.html
If they came out with a fuel injected 2 stroke 500 I'd be on the waiting list. Look at the 500 market right now! AJ Waganer literally is showing Honda that there is INDEED a market for these bikes and he has single handedly revived soo many of these bikes.
If they could bring back at least just the 500, that would be so cool. Kind of like how the XR 650 is still produced, the CR 500 should be treated the same. If they want to do modern 4 stroke mx line as the main one because of whatever reasons, cool, but just bring that 500 back at least by itself lol
Brings back great memories
Beau-ti-ful !
Guess I'm the lucky guy that has a zero hour '01 in the shed . It's a much different bike than the one in the video must say. 21 years on the green Bikes, the KX500's get along OK too. Thanks for posting😎

I didn't get a chance to dirtbike growing up. Would love to try this beast out someday. Doesn't fit my riding style but I can change.
Luv that uphill triple brake tap. Niceee
i love cr500 dear god bring them back now
Very nice topic!
Fantastic sound! 👍👍👍😁
perfectly splendid
That thing is a work of art!!! Love it!!!
As far as the frame folding from large supercross style jumps, I think Robbie Knievel might have an argument against that.
Yeah but i've never really heard complaints from anyone i know about the steel frames. KTM makes steel frames and they absolutely taco. Neck slaps and the rider is sad.
Robbie's bikes are fully gusseted and totally custom
Yes please..I'll take two!!!
I owned one of these 480 s in the 80.s. I bored mine out and put new Wiseco piston and rings New Boysen and read valves and a DG racing pipe. It was one badass bike. I loved those Elsinore bikes I had a CR 80 1981 model had a 125 Elsinore in 84 Just wished I kept the CR480R
Nice footage excellent rider
Carson, it looks like you got a new frame swapped out! I liked it better when it had some rake to it haha!! Love that bike and video!
Looks like an old MAICO 490!! Now I want it even MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!! and sounds as good as one of em!!!!!!!! ride on the tank and it"ll turn like a 125!! snap & go!!!!!
I bet that 500 big bang big bore weapon running maxan 927 carster oil smells as good as it sounds ☝️✊🏁
thank you honda is all we can say
kept yelling "shift...SHIFT!!!" at the computer, hah hah... i own THREE of those
dang CR500R's, they keep following me home. love em. i got a 95 thats been
modded a bit and i outran a gsxr600 in a 2nd to 5th roll on, pavement riding.
hardest part was trying not to pull a wheelie till it looped out..............
my friends were ASTOUNDED- but not as much as the guy on the gsxr was!
I whooped the crap out of this dude's putt-putt Harley with my modded XR 650 one night... bad. Made him look stupid.
But, he was bigger than me. I couldn't stay at the party without a brawl so I left.
I raced a GSXR750 on my old 84 Yamaha RZ350 (basically a Banshee street bike) and was in front of him til 120mph when I ran out of gears

I have the decency for dirt rider magazine as well as the Man who lays it out, not to say what the other screm is about. The 2t-Snd&wind glued on the pipe grip-in rip-in sings-&'brings the Southern grin that you can hear, smell and know the thrill is real so please give me a deal on a new cr500 and I'll ride it just to show those who don't know exactly what it's all about
The dreaded wood chip track
Return? Mine never left.
right on brother same as that
Music just music.
you can just buy a kit from BRC to turn a modern ktm 250 or 300 into a 500.
Power valve! Balancing shaft! 6 speed!
Electric start!!!
Counterbalancer and e-start are unnecessary dead weight on a dedicated MX bike. Kick it hard like youre supposed to and it should fire right up. A microbalanced crankshaft will take care of the tiny little bit of vibration everyone seems to want to bitch about.
except brc bikes cant make the power cr or kx engines make and arent as reliable
Yeah expensive and a long waiting list too.
Woow
Let me tell you about the early eighty's 500's.....nevermind new technology. The power even at low rpm was enough to throw you if you were off your game.
put MAICO on the tank!
Boooyaaa
CR500 new tech coming from Honda !! fuel injection fed -- no more carb
It'll never happen. Mr. Honda himself hated 2-strokes with an irrational passion. They wont ever build another one.
Could only be Chuck Norris riding this without any protection
Dirt bikes should not be 4-stroke that's sacrilegious. That's the equivalent of having a rubber band automatic transmission on a four-wheeler. It should not be legal LOL. ATVs four wheelers dirt bikes motorcycles Etc should all have manual transmission and dirt bikes should all be 2-stroke
The 450's aren't very fun to ride in my opinion. They are fast, but they go fast without any effort. The CR500 isn't like that. It keeps you honest.
I agree these new 450 are tame af , even an 80cc 2 stroke has more erratic and fun top end lol
Bring out a 2023 fuel injected 500 and shut up and take my 💰 money.
Love the two stroke. You die on the up stroke that way you get a free down stroke and then you get a free upstroke when they pull you off.
Please do a dyno comparison!! We got clowns living in the 90s who still think the old 500s make more power than current 450s, even though the 21 CRF makes 4-5 more hp than a CR500!
Would you like a Red Balloon??
2022 CRF 450 (non works) 50 RWHP
2021 Works Edition CRF 450:
52.28 Rear Wheel Horsepower, 32.88 Max. Torque Costs $12K or more
Two Strokes 20 or more years old are producing consistently higher RWHP,
1997 CR500 61.26 RWHP,...(because the air filter was clean)
2002 CR 500AF 60 RWHP (with a fresh sparkplug)
KX 500 2014 AF with KX motor delivering 56.88 RWHP,....
These 2 stroke bikes are also much lighter, they are worth preserving and improving,..people believe in them for a reason. They are not everyones cup of ethanol free pre-mix, so to each their own.

Check out Kaplan America, he does side by side comparisons of dyno charts of various 450s, and uses the same dyno as the magazines, did dynos on the yamaha, the honda, works and regular, and does multiple cr500s. Tbh more often than not the 500s have more hp and torque than the 450s
@@DislodgedTKO is that the guy who built his business around selling vintage 2 strokes? The one who attacks 4 strokes on every video he makes? The one who dynoed a 450 and the number was a full 8-9hp less than other tests? I'm sure he's totally unbiased and impartial, not like his entire business model relies on people buying 2 strokes
He is a guy that has multiple dyno runs of various 450s and 500s on the same dyno the magazines use. Now idk if you have ridden a properly built 500 and a new 450 back to back before, but personally they totally different motors. They fire twice as often on a bigger bore than the 450s, it shouldnt be suprising they out perform on raw #s. Now fuel efficiency and rideability is a whole other topic

Memory has a way of forgetting the bad parts and romancing the rest. 500’s quit being made because they weren’t even popular back then. I know several people who bought them within the past few years and promptly sold them after a couple of rides. Unless ice racing is your thing, save your money.
Ya pull the clutch on pretty much any cr500 and the case will be hairline fractured around the main shaft bearing.
Eventually it gives. Pre covid... repaired cases were 250 + non repaired 500+.
And I've had no luck having them welded twice and they broke still.
Bullet cases are like 1500 a side
I've used mine from everything from racing to trail riding. No issues here.
Clickbait
No thanks!
Totally talented rider but another guy who doesn't know to shift a 500 if you want to go faster. Revving like that just gets it way past the power. Like even though it sounds cool up in the revs, it's actually way down on power up there. So it gives the illusion of a guy using all of its power when in reality he is WAY past it where its only a fraction of what it would be at peak (lower in the revs).
Sick riding though. 👍
