Nothing makes old Rush fans happier than seeing new fans having their minds blown by that instrumental break. Lol 🤯😁 (as well as the rest of it). Controlled musical chaos at it finest. Three simultaneous solos that somehow just blend perfectly. 🤘
That bassline through the breakdown is one of my favourite pieces of Geddy's work. Starts off solo but he's shredding it behind Alex's solo the whole time. I always tell people stop instinctually listening to the guitar solo for a moment and focus on bass for that whole breakdown. Amazeballs.
To be fair- Not many of their peers had prominent bass in the mix. Some bands it’s damn near impossible to even hear the bass! Of course, Mr. Lee is far too good a bass player to allow such a thing to happen to him 😃
Two great points after the song ended: 1) multiple listens required to fully appreciate this band’s instrumental virtuosity and lyrical depth. 2) the instrumental break was insane.
He def makes very interesting choices in his solos. As a drummer, his rhythm playing is off planet to me. He performs as a rhythm player so solidly for a top flight lead guitarist. Rare combination.
Anybody can obviously comment what they like but for me, a fan of Rush since 1981, A Rush Fan Cannot choose a favorite decade they were greatest, or what album was their best, or what songs are better than others, ALL Rush is Awesome!! All Rush tunes are Masterpieces!! THIS IS MY OPINION. Just be glad God put these 3 Amazing Artists together. God Bless 🙏
Another great social statement from Rush. This song is so relevant to what is happening in these times. It's almost like they can see into the future. And of course the fantastic music ✌️.
"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" is a line I used with my kids all throught out their child hoods, still holds true for all adults as well.
🤔 I've gone back and forth between this, Spirit of Radio, New World Man and Closer to the Heart since 7th Grade. 😒58 and still have a different favorite lyric every time I watch reactions to those Rush songs! 🥰🐰
The "guitar" solo on this song is really each guy taking a "solo" at the same time. That triple instrument solo is what makes this song stand out in my mind. Blows me away EVERY time I hear it.
The verse is in 13/4 broken down into alternating 6/4, 7/4. The little bridge part is in 5/4 and the solo is in 12/8. They all go off in the solo and Geddy’s bass is just insane there. This is fusion playing all the way.
What happens when you combine the best bass player in the world, the greatest percussionist of all time, and one of the top guitarists in rock ... you get a new Rush song.
Thanks for another Rush reaction. I must say Airplay Beats does reactions the right way. Thoughtful comments and insights. There is a lot going on in Rush music, so for a first listen it can be difficult to get the meaning of the lyrics while listening to the complex drumming, bass line, and guitar work. That just means there is a lot to appreciate, on subsequent listens. For a cool Rush vibe with sparse lyrics, check out Jacob's Ladder off this same album. Its heavy and infectious.
Excellent band, produced great music for so many years, please add Rush song Hemispheres from 1978. It is the whole side of the album , 18 minutes long, titled Hemispheres. I think you’ll enjoy it 👍
🙋🏾♀ Raise your hand if you want a Rush Fear Trilogy listening party! That would be 'The Enemy Within' (Pt1), The Weapon (Pt2) & Witch Hunt (Pt3). 🤗 Throwing it out there with the rest of my request! 😁🐰
@@lindaward5376 🙄 I don't know why I blank on that song. 🤭 It's like a "mind fart" I have and I think it's because VT is a lot later. 🤗 Not 1 of the Albums we did Homework to at my friends house after school. It was her dad who was a Kiss fan. She asked if I could go with when they played NJ 2x. I had other classmates who saw them with Manfrid Mann (?). 🥰 I fell in LOVE with Geddy, his voice & his hair. In return, I introduced Lauren to E,W & F, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder cause those were the Albums I played when she did Homework at my house. I always asked if she could go with to Apollo Amateur Hr. 🤣 She fell in love with 'Millie Jackson' who was a bit risque for 7th Graders. Meanwhile, we'd loose out collective minds over Robert Plant or Roger Daltry every time they played MSG! 😒 Super weird seeing reactors review MSG Zep shows I was at with Lauren & her dad in the nosebleed section. They looked like grains of sand from our seats 🤩 but the Surround Sound of the 70's can't be beat at MSG back in the day. 🥰🐰
The approximately 10-second long transition from that bridge (with the bass/then guitar solos) back into the main groove at the end, transports me back in time more vividly and intensely than does any part of any song from my past. Chills, every time I hear it. Thanks for the great reaction, fellas.
Still love it all these years later. That's a song... Hope you will listen again and again and catch the lyrics, they're pointed and sharp and so fitting for today's world.
I play guitar, played in a band when I was a teenager. Rush was like homework. You just had to learn how to play their stuff. Drummers, bass players and guitar players will tell you this. :)
Please finish the rest of this record. It's 🔥. The first song Spirit of Radio is probably their most popular and there is a chance you heard it before. Rush was influenced by many prog bands like Yes, Jethro Tull, and Genesis but where I think they separate themselves is they play a little heavier and are incredibly complex yet write songs that appeal to the average Joe.
Another North American band this equally applies to is Kansas. Those pioneering British bands are too progressive to be appreciated by the average Joe or those unwilling to expand their musical horizons.
Rush songs can take a few times listening to. And then you get it - such great musicality. I have to admit it took me awhile back in the day to get used to Geddy's voice, but I have always LOVED Niel Pert's drums. Totally appreciate them now.
This album was a nice transition of his vocals, no longer the extremely high pitch vocals of the 70's but still did it on occasion, like after the solo on this song
Guys, you mentioned waiting to find the groove. Its my opinion, they start in the pocket, then during their transitions, take that whole pocket with them, and have a pocket inside of a new pocket... really listen, its quite fascinating how they do it.
I saw an interview where Alex said he was always amazed when he got through this song in concert without making any ,mistakes - it is one of his most difficult solos.
You guys are making my day! SD, and now one of my favorite rock tunes of all time! The best breakdown...more than solos, but integrated musical mastery! The lyrics...so freak'n meaningful in such short stanzas! Neil was really a special musician/song writer/drum alchemist! Genetic Blends with uncertain ends....wow! Ann Rand would be proud.
🤫 Rush Secrets: Just keep bobbing your head to any Rush Song and the beat will eventually catch back up to you. 🤔 Also why it looks like I'm dancing off beat to every Rush song and don't care. 🥰🐰
SORRY...for blowing up the comments. This is my all-time favorite band, by Rush. You could do a full album reaction to this, if you want to. Different Strings us another amazing song, that you can react to. See what you think.
While a killer song in its own right, imagine us playing this album for the first time and trying to process Free Will when Jacob’s Ladder starts and you are, that quickly, in another killer groove
6:55--That's what us musicians call a "Coda"...And on the the live DVD, "Exit Stage Left", They play it so good that when they came out back to the groove, the whole crowd of 25,000 was on their feet cheering--They'd just witnessed performance perfection!!
I was lucky and got to see them tour for this album, so I'm a Rush guy too Chi. "I will choose a path that's clear." My brothers, thank you. Always good to see and hear ya'll. Thanks for sharing the knowledge, and all the love....❤❤❤
To listen to RUSH before Neil Peart and the prog sound listen to their first album track called Working Man. Still one of my all time favourite songs ever!
Great reaction...and analysis 👌. Please....do yourselves a favor and listen to Jacob's Ladder andNatural Science. They're epic tracks!! See what you think.
Love the heavier prob sounds of Rush. The only area where they did not excel was in keys. I'm telling you, you'll dig Porcupine Tree if you like Rush and Floyd. Great thing about IT is that you can get some awesome live performances for reactions which sound as clean and tight as the studio versions. Must try Anesthetize, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, or Hatesong.

I’ve come to realize in my latter years that having “free will” is the ultimate show of love by God. But, we kind of went and screwed up a lot of stuff and then blame Him for it. Anyhow, love your reactions brothers. 👍🏼👊🏼

Hey guys, just recently started watching your channel and I like what I've seen so far! I love watching folks discovering Rush! I truly enjoy seeing your journey down the Rush rabbit hole and your just starting to scratch the surface. If I could.make a few selections,(if you read this), side one of 2112 the studio version. You have to listen to side one all in one sit down, it's a concept story so you definitely need to have the lyrics pulled up to understand it. I would recommend you listen to side two another time it's like any other album on that side so you could do just one song at a time then. I also would like to suggest any song off of Moving Pictures until you've listened to the whole album, I believe you've already heard Tom Sawyer, that is off of side one of that record and that imo is the least song off that album! Well guys I appreciate the channel, keep up the good work! Peace out! 👍🔥🇺🇸🎸😎 P.S. If u do by chance read this comment, I hope it don't put u in a coma!
Most Rush songs will take 4-5 listens so you can focus on what they are doing individually, and, of course, to appreciate and understand the lyrics. You guys should do Natural Science off the same album. Neil’s groove machine is cranked to 11 on that one. Loving the reactions!

@@tristanrl1940 So true.
One of my favorite lines to play. Awesome drop into it as well
That breakdown is probably their best where all three are simultaneously showcased to the max.
@@anthonydawson8080 I've got a buddy who plays the bass and I sent him this to listen to it and he told me to piss off. Haha
Two great points after the song ended: 1) multiple listens required to fully appreciate this band’s instrumental virtuosity and lyrical depth. 2) the instrumental break was insane.
I've always thought the trippiest thing about the group was the style of Alex Lifeson's guitar playing. It's ethereal..especially the solos.
He def makes very interesting choices in his solos. As a drummer, his rhythm playing is off planet to me. He performs as a rhythm player so solidly for a top flight lead guitarist. Rare combination.

You guys really get the musicality. All Rush songs require multiple listenings to pick up the instruments and Lu. They’re unbelievable
I love how intently you guys listen to the music and truly appreciate the brilliance that went into it
Agreed. They listen to the music. Shades of the Doobie Brothers.
La Villa Strangiato absolutely a must
Jacob's Ladder is also phenomenal.
Another great social statement from Rush. This song is so relevant to what is happening in these times. It's almost like they can see into the future. And of course the fantastic music ✌️.
Love their song "Entre Nous" great lyrics as well.
in a classic album,old.but good,🤘🤘🤘
Geddy Lee is magical playing bass and keys and singing
A rare band.
These guys were masters at there individual instruments. Boss level stuff
"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" is a line I used with my kids all throught out their child hoods, still holds true for all adults as well.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice… how true is that about life???❤✌🏽☮️🤲🙏
Yes, time marches on even when you are thinking about what choice you may make...
La Villa Strangiatto live, The Trees, which is really about trees but translates easily to social issues of today is another timeless piece
Another brilliant song. When they all solo together 🤯🤯🤯 This song has one of my favourite Alex Lifeson solos.
Geddy Lee must be in top 3 bass players
I love this song. Some of my favorite lyrics of any song they have written
🤔 I've gone back and forth between this, Spirit of Radio, New World Man and Closer to the Heart since 7th Grade. 😒58 and still have a different favorite lyric every time I watch reactions to those Rush songs! 🥰🐰

I was thinking the same thing. Bouncing from one player to the next to make sure I was hearing each of them playing. Soooo good.
3 most talented guys...ever.
The verse is in 13/4 broken down into alternating 6/4, 7/4. The little bridge part is in 5/4 and the solo is in 12/8. They all go off in the solo and Geddy’s bass is just insane there. This is fusion playing all the way.

Way better epic than 2112 imo
Ohhh what a feeling.... What a Rushhhhhh...

0:24 You are ENTERING into EPICNESS going all the way back to 1980 for me ! Saw them LIVE next year at 15 years old for Moving Pictures 1981 !

Now you brothers are catching the groove. Three top notch complex musicians
if you listen again, the Bridge is basically the three of them soloing at the same time, & somehow they all stay together!

I love the simultaneous bass and guitar solo.
