I would argue that "relevant" would imply that "radio" has the same status today that it did in 1980....I beg to differ (but that doesn't make the song less...it's awesome).
Yep. I always consider this album part of their 70s genre although it was released in January 1980. Moving Pictures was the bridge to the synth start of Signals. This is my favorite album by them.
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands. Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
If you look further into this song, you'll see it is all about the radio airwaves and music industry. The change up from arena rock to reggae and other changes throughout the song were meant to be like someone going from radio station to radio station. If you watch the official video for the song, you'll see an image of Marconi, one of the radio inventors, along with images of some of the DJs from the radio station in Canada the band listened to. Great reaction! Keep it up!!!
They are reflecting on radio - all the changes you hear are like when you turn the dial and hear different music genres. Their video for this is perfection.
This song was written in honor of a radio station in Toronto CFNY 102.1 which went by "The Spirit Of Radio" in the 80's. The best radio experience ever.
The Spirit of radio and Tom Sawyer were the two songs that Rush played during their 2013 induction into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, and one of my favorites used as an encore when I saw them in concert…
Rush marked the end of mainstream progressive rock (of the bands you heard on classic rock radio), not the beginnings of it. The early prog bands were British bands like Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc. Rush took the baton from them.
Im not a RUSH fan - but I think their fans would state this is mainstream RUSH - and you should try to go back the original beginnings of them - where you will see immense experimentation - where many bands of today and past acknowledge as great and so influential.
If you'd like to hear more of that reggae vibe, I recommend Vital Signs from Moving Pictures, Digital Man and New World Man from Signals, and Distant Early Warning from Grace Under Pressure. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Something else really cool about Rush: they are all huge fans of baseball. There is a Geddy Lee exhibit in the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City because Geddy had the opportunity to purchase over 400 autographed baseballs from Negro League players. He bought the collection and donated it to the museum. Geddy also owns a baseball that is signed by every modern day MLB player with 3,000 hits or more. There's a cool video of Geddy walking up to Albert Pujols and asking him to sign the baseball after Pujols got his 3,000th hit. You will often see Geddy sitting behind home plate at Toronto Blue Jays games.
The peak of their career was about 1976 to 2015. But yeah, their biggest albums were early 80's, Moving Pictures 1981 is their most famous one. Once they gained that permanent loyal fanbase in the 70's it never went away, and just kept growing really.
Rush are music geeks making music for other music geeks. You can hear them elaborate on the reggae aspect when you watch the live version of the same song.
I've never heard anyone compare Rush to grunge music before, loved the connection. I listened to some Nirvana after the video and heard some parallels in the way they both switch up the reverb and distortion on the bass and guitar throughout a song.
All the different music styles in this song are a reflection of the different music stations and what is played on them. 2112 is an excellent choice! Rush had a number of peaks in their career. When you come to do 2112 please do the lyric or comic book version to catch the story line. Both Led Zeppelin and Yes were big influences on Rush. You can hear the Zeppelin influence in their earlier work. They then developed their own unique sound which became an influence to many other bands. Rush had their first progressive rock album called fly by night, and also when Neil Peart join them in 1975… so guys you were surprised to hear that Spirit of radio came out in 1980 yet they were doing progressive rock in 1975
Rush is a Canadian Band that began in about 1970 or 71. Basically, a Band of the 70s and early 80s at their prime, although they toured into the early 2000s and drew huge crowds, even as their careers as a Rock Band began to come to a close.
While King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull and Genesis set the Progressive standards of rock fused with classical, folk, and Jazz, Rush was the band that drew in more heavy metal flavors and paved the way for 21st century progressive metal like later King Crimson, Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.
BRAVO! 🏆🏆🏆 RUSH did influence many bands and they had their influences as well, such as Led Zeppelin, The Police, and even KISS! For a more "bluesy" track you might like to try "Here Again" from their debut album. Thanks much for this one.
I appreciate you guys hitting up my boys. Rush is such a unique band, who were major influence on many rock, metal, and grunge bands. Even though their sound changed through the years, they are considered one of the Godfathers of progressive metal. The album 2112 is considered the birth of progressive metal. Rush took the progressive element of Yes, Jethro Tull and Genesis, and mixed it with the hard edge of Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and the Who and created a genre progressive metal.

😜 Moving Pictures vs 2112 vs Permanent Waves! 🤪 The Battle is on! 🤗 And I am here for it! 🙋🏾♀ I'll go 1st.... 🤔 Moving Pictures does have very ....😊 digestible song selections but 🤯 2112 is EPIC!!!! 🤗 Freaking EP-IC! 😍 Pulling an Album Sleeve out finding it covered in art, Lyrics & Information was the best part. 🤨 I hated ripping off the plastic ... cause I didn't have nails. 🤨 Wanna drive a person crazy, have them rip off and open a CD/DVD Plastic Covering. 😂 I ain't want to play some Video Games cause it took so long to unwrap them, then 🤓 another 8 hrs to set up your profile 🥴 Sheesh.... 😁🥰🐰
Love your reaction to this song. Neal Peart was a huge Police fan. The Police had a reggae sound to there music. He was also a huge Stewart Copeland (drummer for Police) fan. If your going to react to one album, it has to be Moving Pictures. That was my first concert back in 1981. Enjoy!😎👍
DRUMMER / PERCUSSIONIST AND ALSO THE BAND'S LYRICIST!😊COMPLETE GIANT AND MUSICAL VIRTUOSO YOU GUYS, THE P[ROFESSOR ( NEIL P / EAR /T ) R.I.P. ☹ PERCUSSION PARADISE NEIL! 😊 3 GUYS THAT SOUND LIKE A 7 MAN BAND FOR GODSAKES! 💯 TAKE GREAT CARE LA AND CHE!
Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. I was younger then you when I first heard Rush. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song. I think you should watch the live version here czcams.com/video/FFpZFnJ6ZT8/video.html
Rush has been a great rock band since the late 60s but peaked in the early 80s Their legacy is being 3 of the finest musicians to ever play rock and roll Neil Pearts legacy will be the drummer who laid the foundation for 90% of hiphop beats Bonzo got the rest...Thanx fellas
This was a really big hit for Rush. It felt so shiny and happy, maybe a little too sweet and clean. But even this song would be a whole career for any other band. I still think Caress of Steel is underrated. Just wait until you pop open La Villa Strangiato.
Most Rush fans my age (57) consider Rush's earlier work ('76ish-'81ish) to be the music that defined them.
Was gonna say the same. They’re a 70’s- early 80’s band, imo
Great time for them
Couldn't agree more.
Same age here, you are exactly right.
Im 57 and would put Clockwork Angels from 2012 in their top 5 maybe top 3 albums
This song was released in 1980 and it is still ahead of its time and relevant!
@@dcmanuel7232 It was a prescient vision of where radio was headed...
One of the most unique songs ever, who does a transition 10 seconds into a song? Rush that's who
“Glittery prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity”
The greatest drummer to walk on this planet is in this band. RIP Neal Peart
One of the greatest bands of all time 😊
Neil hated feeling like he was selling out for airplay on the radio....so he wrote a song about it. Lol. Pure genius.
This song is from 1980. Amazing musicians.
Rush has always sounded more like 70s classic rock to me than 90s music.
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
This
Written in 1979. Released in 80. That’s how far ahead they were.
If you look further into this song, you'll see it is all about the radio airwaves and music industry. RIP Neil Peart, best ever. I because a fan in 1977 when I saw him live 25 feet way. My favorite period is 70’s, thru early 80’s. This is from 1981!
1980 release. I saw their first concert supporting the album in January 1980. I agree, their early stuff is great.
1980 CFNY FM Toronto - The Spirit of Radio. Good times.
2112; prepare to have your minds blown!!
I love the way this song really sounds like dialing through an analog car radio. This is from my favorite Rush album Permanent Waves.
They are reflecting on radio - all the changes you hear are like when you turn the dial and hear different music genres. Their video for this is perfection.
The 90's brought drum machines, and click tracks, and digital mastering as a standard, Neil set the standard for drum machines.
Neil was a drumming machine!!! 😎 RIP
Neil Peart the best rock drummer ever. RIP.
This song was written in honor of a radio station in Toronto CFNY 102.1 which went by "The Spirit Of Radio" in the 80's. The best radio experience ever.
Totally agree! One of the people we can send our thanks to is David Marsden, who I'd been following since his CHUM FM days.
The Spirit of radio and Tom Sawyer were the two songs that Rush played during their 2013 induction into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, and one of my favorites used as an encore when I saw them in concert…
🤗 I love this song! Never gets old! ☺️🥰🐰
seen them twice rock gods is what they are
No other band has so much talent and their music will live on forever. Amazing.
Released in 1980 off their stellar "Permanent Waves" album.
The thing about RUSH that always stood out to me was that the drummer was the lyricist.
Rush marked the end of mainstream progressive rock (of the bands you heard on classic rock radio), not the beginnings of it. The early prog bands were British bands like Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc. Rush took the baton from them.
So Fresh…
Like It Was Yesterday.
Timeless…
Rush with Max Webster opening New Years Eve 1980, MLG. Wow.
Rush formed in 1968 and had their first big hit in 1974 with “Working Man”. They were massive throughout the late ‘70s!!!👌👍✌️😁
More like massive in the early 80s which is when they had all their radio hits
Rush was hitting their stride in late 70's - early 80's. IMO their best work was the farewell to kings , moving pictures , signals era.
73-81...biggest years...ahead of their time...this was released in 1980, I was 17. 😊
A song about the music industry, Radio and record companies
Im not a RUSH fan - but I think their fans would state this is mainstream RUSH - and you should try to go back the original beginnings of them - where you will see immense experimentation - where many bands of today and past acknowledge as great and so influential.
Favorite Rush song here got everything love you guys
Oh yeah
If you'd like to hear more of that reggae vibe, I recommend Vital Signs from Moving Pictures, Digital Man and New World Man from Signals, and Distant Early Warning from Grace Under Pressure. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦

Rush-often imitated, never duplicated. Looking forward to your full album reaction of 2112. ✌️
Rush is always on the peak!
Moving Pictures would be the whole album to do. Every song a classic.
Something else really cool about Rush: they are all huge fans of baseball. Mid 70's to early 80's is the OG Rush.
I saw them in 1974.
Rush peak was the whole time they played. Best live band ever.
There are so many great Rush songs you guys have no idea but I'm sure that you soon will!
😂 OK, I left my comment, got snacks and 🥰 I'm ready for 'The 👻 of 📻....' ☺🐰
Great reaction, u mentioned 2112, watch it live 1997 Toronto, I was at this concert, the lads were on fire all night...
Cheers from Toronto....
Everybody loves this song,,,,💥💥💥👍🤪
Rush, one the greatest of all time. Thanks for the reaction.
2112 side A is a life changer

Rush was influenced by Yes not the other way around, I think it was Geddy Lee who said that there would be no Rush if it weren't for Yes.
yes!! 2112
That snowy place you mentioned was Le Studio, in Morin Heights, about an hour north of Montreal, Quebec.
A unique song! Rush baby I am!
All the different music styles in this song are a reflection of the different music stations and what is played on them.

This song is Divine!
Yes! Do an album! It's like Pink Floyd with some of their albums. 2112 would be perfect. Or Hemispheres would be another epic choice. 💿👍
My dudes, 2112 is a trip. A progressive rock masterpiece. Get them lyrics up when you're ready to check that one out.
Rush had their first progressive rock album called fly by night, and also when Neil Peart join them in 1975… so guys you were surprised to hear that Spirit of radio came out in 1980 yet they were doing progressive rock in 1975

Yes, 2112!!!!!
Gotta dig Xanadu live by these dudes, you get to see the drummer play every percussion piece he has set up. Brilliant!
We did that one
Everything but the triangles. Unless he did them when I wasn't looking.😯🥁
@@williamdemerchant7295 idk, I think you can hear em, just not see em played.

Vital signs by Rush off of Moving pictures album has a huge reggae vibe ….and the song Digital man has a ska feel to it….Neil was a huge Police fan…
Rush's best, a perfect song.
So glad I was there for it all.
Love your show. You guys are on your way up. Brilliant.

When you do 2112, the comic book-like video is best for newbies. It explains the context of the story very well. Looking forward to it .
I can't think of a 90s band that could hold a candle to this band. The late 60s and 70s produced the great bands .
2112...side one is a concept story. You have to listen to it all at once. 🙃👍

First big album that got airplay. The next album Moving Pictures (1982?) was even bigger and the band was at their peak.

You guys need to look into the 2112 Album . That one is what launched Rush .
Rush was so far ahead of their time. You said they "sound like the 90s" but this was released in 1979.
Rush was ALWAYS at their peak!! Lol
The video for this song is animated. It's a pretty cool video.
late 70s rock blended with 80s guitar effects, timeless lyrics. 3 masters in their prime! (good comparison with YES, but they had 5)
1980 is when the album Permanent Waves came out.
You're definitely right about rush influencing a lot of people but this record came out in 79 it just shows a how much impact they truly had

🤗 We ALL were.... 🤭😁🐰
Hey guys do 2112 side 1... it's an epic story and musical adventure... you'll love it.
First time I've ever heard Yes described as "bluesy"!
Gene Simmons from Kiss summed it up perfectly. "The only band that sounds like RUSH is RUSH."
This was a really big hit for Rush. It felt so shiny and happy, maybe a little too sweet and clean. But even this song would be a whole career for any other band. I still think Caress of Steel is underrated. Just wait until you pop open La Villa Strangiato.
La Villa Strangiato is truly a masterpiece. Blows me away every time I listen to it.
2112 Is my favorite album of theirs. It's a story. A long one at that. More like a journey ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
