Huge Beans vs Corn for Carp - Which is Best for Big Fish?

- I wanted to try and single out the larger Carp by using really big beans as hookbaits and I had selection of Cannellini Beans, Butter Beans, Red Kidney Beans and Chick Peas to choose from, (Yes, I know Chick Peas aren't Beans).
I would also like to hear from you as to your experiences of using these types of baits, so please feel free to enter your comments below.

It doesn't matter how much and you certainly don't have to feel obliged to do it, but it all helps to keep the Channel running.
Nice to see I am not the only one using jewellery elastic, the flat variety works best for me.
I'm only just starting with it Ovidiu. I have 2 or 3 types to try, but thanks for the info regarding the flat stuff.
Well that's 2 feeders that have bean and gone.... sorry Den couldn't resist that one.
Arrrghhh! It's getting worse and worse on this Channel Terry.🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍
Excellent experiment den, they do work it's keeping them on the hooks the problem
Thanks Michael. I'm struggling with that too. I might try something else soon.
Thanks for the help Den, hope all is well mate!
Love your experimental videos Den. I like to experiment when away from matches and not relying on the tried and tested.the small carp has got to be a sighn there reproducing. Great video as always Den.
Thanks Scott. It is a lot of fun and it could give me an edge in matches.
What an absolutley cracking session. Wild carp sure love to eat beans. I like them even more now cause i love beans too xD
It was looking like one of the best sessions for a while until that snag kept getting in the way mate.
@@FishingwithDen I feel your pain Den. I always manage to hook up in snags with the most expensive floats.
@@Sixx2099 Luckily, they were homemade mate, so I just have to make up some more.
One of the best 'particle' baits I've used for a long time is black eyed beans cooked in tomato soup with garlic and sweet chilli, had carp to well over 30lb
That sounds interesting Clive. I might give them a try.👍👍
@@FishingwithDen they're a bit messy, to say the least, but really worth a try, I used to buy sacks of beans but now use tinned beans now, I drain them then soak them in the 'gunk' for at least six hours, bring them to the boil then lightly simmer for about five minutes
I’ve fished with chickpeas quite a lot. I’ve added flavours to them and hair rig them. They worked well.
Never tried cannellini beans whilst fishing. I do eat them in stew, very good for you.
Quite a cheap bait. Cracking session Den. Well done.
@@clivelogsdon1492 Thanks mate.👍👍
@@leegarner6013 Thanks Lee. Do you use tinned or fresh Chick Peas? If fresh, how do you prepare them please?
Carp fishing paradise there Den. You lucky man!
Yep. It probably is Spark. The only problem is that now they have blocked off vehicular access, I have to get up and down that huge Levy Bank with all my kit. I was shattered by the time I got back to the car.
@@FishingwithDen I have a wheeled trolley with built in seat. At 72 my days of carrying a heavy load are over.
@@newsmonger77 Same here Spark. I used the wheel kit on my new Ultralite Seat Box to get everything down there. The problem is pulling everything back up a steep hill mate.🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍
Another enjoyable session Den.Shame loosing end tackle in a snag pit but that’s fishing.Love watching you catch wild carp beats fishing in farm fed carp fisheries anytime.🎣🎣
Thanks Clive.
Another worthy video. I do believe leaving the beans in their own liquid will be better. It will probably also add a bit of flavour to your bait, although not for long.
Leaving them in their own liquid seems to be the consensus Robert, so I'll give it a try. Thanks for you contribution by the way.
Love these kind of videos trying different things There's a guy on CZcams Cookies fishing capers had great success on chickpeas he used to boil them l think and l mentioned about microwaving them and he loved the idea and even added flavours might be worth a watch Den
Thanks Alan, I'll have a look at his channel.👍👍
Hi Den, Good to see the river still has a good head of fish after the floods… is that the river that cut the high St off both ends and people had to be ferried by boats. ?
That's the one Geoff. If you look at the levy bank on the far side. The water came up close to the top in some places nearer to the shops.
You're serving them up quite the Smorgasbord with your various condiments and pulses. 🙂 Pity about the shopping trolleys, maybe you could do a magnet fishing video in that spot. Did you get to try your hand at Luderick fishing? 👍👍
I do like to try different things John. I don't know about magnet fishing though mate. I think I need a Dredge! I keep trying to get out for Luderick, but something always seems to get in the way. I will definitely try to get it done in the next month.👍👍
Lovely and innovative as usual, thanks man!
I had to try this right after watching the video and used canned kidneys - too soft, they split and don't stay on the hair well. Will buy raw ones and boil them myself because they seem to work! I did have a few bites with beans straight on the hook and nothing using corn. Still very cold here in Germany....carp are only starting to feed slowly.
Thanks Jan. I'm going to do some tests to see if I can stop the beans splitting, then its back down to the river for Round Two.😁😁👍👍
@@FishingwithDen Yes, experimenting is part of the fun! Perhaps soaking overnight does the trick already or maybe leaving them as they are and drill to get the Quickstop through.
@@janwestphal8047 Mine were already soft Jan. They came out of a can. I suspect that I will have to keep them in the juice which came in the can, but I will do the tests to find out. As you say, experimenting is part of the fun mate.
Den, you mentioned on this video that you had lost a rod as you had inadvertently put the reel on backwind. Have you considered using a baitrunner reel to eliminate the possibilty of losing another rod. You probably know this but when you have the baitrunner lever on, if you get a bite it switches off and the reel goes into freespool. Apologies if someone has already mentioned this to you.
CB - From a cold England! Snow forecast this week along with a lovely Easterly wind, you can't beat it!
I'm not jealous of you at all...honestly.😉
Hi C B. I think you got my comment about losing the rod a little bit wrong mate. I lost it because I had not taken the line out of the line clip. You are however correct about the freespool on a Baitrunner reel. If I had unclipped the line, the freespool would have worked well. I do actually have a Baitrunner, but I like the oversize spool on my Matrix Horizon X 5000 reel for my heavy duty and distance feeder fishing better. By the way, its 38 degrees here today. Too flipping hot for this Englishman.😁😁
@@FishingwithDen Ah, ok I obviously wasn't paying proper attention. Must do better!
We had those sort of temperatures over here last summer and we couldn't cope with it! Hopefully not quite as bad this year. Thanks for the reply.
Tight lines!
@@CB-xr1eg No worries mate. I hope it warms up soon for you. Tight Lines.
Hi Den, have you tried Korum Barbel rods, very suitable for your style of fishing, a lot cheaper than your Free spirits. Baitrunner reels would prevent rod losses.
Hi Mark. I haven't tried Barbel Rods I'm afraid. I find the Free Spirit Rods seem to fit all my heavy duty feeder needs.
I agree that the Korum Barbel rods are versatile. Best and cheapest all-rounder.
Great vid once more funny enough I watched another vid on CZcams and he said that a large bait for carp is the way to go because their mouths are so big even the smaller ones can take them in. I did freeze and predrill some soft bait and put in a freezer bag with some success?
Thanks Phill. I did catch small Carp on the big beans so, Yes, I agree.
Hi Den,maybe beans left in water and open to the air carry on soaking up water and swell and split.Maybe drying off the beans and using oil instead of water may stop the beans swelling and splitting.
Thanks Stan. I am going to do an experiment using most of the ideas which have been suggested in the comments. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.
I have caught some very big carp in that part of the river. Was always on bread balls
Yes. I use bread there too. if I can't catch on Sweetcorn, bread usually does the trick.
As always, interesting video. Nice little river or canal?
Thanks Ralf. Its up in the higher reaches of a tidal river. Further up from where I was fishing it gets much shallower.
@@FishingwithDen Do you only catch carp in the region? I never see another coarse fish.
@@ralfmuentnich Unfortunately, I only have Carp around where I live Ralf. Many kilometres away, there are Perch, Roach and Tench, but its a long way from where I live mate.
@@FishingwithDen And that is definitely a private facility like the ones in the Netherlands and England. They grow out of the ground like mushrooms. And there the day ticket is very expensive.
Den, did the butter beans come straight out of the tin to the line?
Yes they did David, but I've stopped using them as they are too fragile.
Nice to. See U fishing that spot den haven't fished there yet fished RT on Saturday 6hours had over 30pound of carp biggest was 6/7 pound all on a float up against the bankcouldn't lift the keeper nett lol I tried chick peas and they just split
Thanks Vlad. I keep meaning to go up there again, but I never seem to have the time. I see you had the same problem with Chick Peas as I did mate. Was that the same swim that Pete fished the other day?
@@FishingwithDen it was that swim U did a CZcams video on when you where float fishing where it's around 10foot drop from the pillons
@@theimpaler5034 Ah OK mate.
Could it be the beans are cooked for human consumption so softer than say the Par boiled we used to use for Potatoes Den ? good session though shame about the steep bank making you struggle Our club lakes have the size 10 barbless rule & never really found an issue on size Tend to use Guru ready made hooklinks around a 1lb bs less than the mainline
Hi Barbara. Yes, that's possible. I'll do some research on how the specimen hunters prepare their beans. Thanks. Are you old enough to remember the great Dick Walker experimenting with par boiled potatoes many many years ago?
@@FishingwithDen Old enough to ensure I don't carry lots of gear up & down levy banks or to far Den LOL Yes think he was the first person to bring it to our attention
@@barbaraneville5036 Touché Barbara. Touché. 🤣🤣👍👍
Thanks for the mention Den, not like your round the corner, and every little helps as the advert says 😉.
More annoying when you loose shop bought gear...And if I'd have lost a Free Spirit rod, I'd been in with a wetsuit ,mask and snorkel...
No worries mate. It was much appreciated. If the rod hadn't sunk when it was on the way out, I was going to dive in after it too.🤣🤣👍👍
Hi Den, which country are you in? is it the UK?
Hi Fin. I am from the UK, but it's in new South Wales in Australia. I retired here a few years ago.
@@FishingwithDen Ah lovely, the fishing looks amazing!
May be you shouldn't keep the beans in water. They are going to absorb it and crack when they are "full". If you use canned beans, it would probably be better to use the fluid of the can. Sorry for my "bumpy" english.
That's a good point Martin. I replaced the fluid because I thought it would become sticky on my fingers, but thinking about it, you may be right. Thanks mate.👍👍
The perfect amount of salt in the liquid would keep them the right moisture content and firmness I’d imagine. You replacing the liquid they came in was probably the problem. Could salt them extra to keep better between trips, maybe run an experiment with different salt amounts and see if ones salted extra heavily can be brought back to where you want them with less salty water🤷♂️
I'll try your ideas along with some of those from earlier. Thanks Brett.
I think for Chick-peas you have to pass the stop through the sides of the pea - not top to bottom - as there are two distinct parts of the pea inside the skin. SM
That's a good point Stewart, but it felt like the whole thing became very fragile due to the outer skin splitting before I put it on. I know specimen Carp anglers use these, so I must be doing something wrong.
I would say the same for the other bean varieties as well. It is difficult to deal with the spinning when retrieving, but they do stay together better.
