I loved this show and it is my all time favorite game show. However, I never once thought that Dawson said anything truly funny, clever or witty. Seems most concerned about his ego than anything else. At a few times I saw him throw the game so his preferred contestant would win. Really pathetic that at the end of his time on the show he pouted and caused the shows to be awkward.
How do you know he threw the game? After Richard left, the show floundered and died. Gene blames scheduling, but once Dawson left I stopped watching as often. Richard Dawson was the most successful celebrity in the super match. The change in rules was a surprise to not only Dawson, but to viewers as well. It was a slap in the face. It was like taking Babe Ruth out of a game whenever he came up to bat. Seeing it now, I understand why it never won an Emmy. At the time it originally aired I thought it was a shoe-in. It was one of my favorite TV shows.
I watch the Match Game every day from 1-2 ET on Game Show Network. Still crazy after all these years!
