~~We added English and Spanish subtitles in the closed captions for those who want to sing along.~~
We do not own anything related to J.R.R. Tolkien's, "The Hobbit" or Peter Jackson's films, apart from this particular arrangement and recording.
This is a cover of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold." Melody written by David Donaldson, David Long, Steve Roche and Janet Roddick found in Howard Shore's movie soundtrack.
We hope you really enjoy this. It took a while to edit. Just trying to make something entertaining.
My brother arranged this piece and we thought it would be neat to sing more of the verses of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Misty Mountains" poem than they did in the movie.
    It is an amazing story!
Three of my brothers and my dad sang. I recorded and mixed it. There are a total of 10 singing tracks.

    Lyrics:
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
    On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
    The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
    To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
    The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
    And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
    The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old...

This would be based on the fallacy that the LotR is a reference to WWII, and the European conflict. While it is true that the book was written under the shadow of war, and that undoubtedly affected Tolkein's mood, I myself have held and read an official copy of LotR with a forward by the man himself saying that he was aware of this rumor, and DENYING IT. He said that the war had literally nothing to do with the story, that he had conceived the storyline prior to the war, and he refuted all suggestions that he was writing wartime propaganda. The goblins are NOT Germany, the Hobbits are NOT England, Sauron is NOT Hitler.

The Dwarfs, like the Elves, are fading from Middle Earth. An analogy of how mystisicm, frontiers and the "unknown" magical places are fading from the earth.
The Elves, take their fate with grace and choose to migrate to the old lands (where none other may go but gods and elves). That or die and fade in Middle Earth.
The Dwarfs, however, are a much prouder species. They take their fate in a much more melancholy but heroic way. They continue like old, they always seek to regain their lost glory and power, even if they know they never can. They always look for caverns old, lost gold and glory, lost homes and lost legacies.
The great tragedy here is that they know it's futile, but why do they do it? Easy. Why not? It's who they are, they are dwarfs. As they sing this old song in the movie, this is shown, because even though it reminds them of a lost capitol and a lost eon of dwarf supremacy: They all stand up. They're stout, but melancholy at the song. They all show their honour and pride of who they were, who they are. Dwarfs.
It's a weird thing really, their dungeons and caverns will in due time be their mausoleum as they fade. As the last dwarfs die out in their magnificent halls and prodigious caverns. They're in fact seeking back not to lost glory, but to rest, to be forgotten with their gold, to remember and be remembered for their glory days.
I guess that's just how badass dwarfs are. As long as the last one draws breath, there'll be a proud, stout, angry, alcoholic, pipe-smoking, goblin-slaughtering dwarf. Humming this song in memory of old, regretting nothing but still strangely sad and proud at his legacy left.
All things fade. Dwarfs just do it much better than any other ever could.
    Great work on the song.

This is beautiful. It's exactly like how Tolkien would have imagined it I think: Dwarves were not just the surly, grim race often portrayed in other works. They were also brave, proud, honorable and deeply loved beautiful things. Masterful craftsmen, masons and smiths, they could produce wondrous works of art from stone.
Although fearsome warriors, the Dwarves were also fast in friendship and love. This is exemplified by Gimli's friendship with Legolas. Though initially cold to each other, they grow to be the best of friends.
Furthermore, after the Battle of Helm's Deep, Gimli goes to great lengths to describe the beauty of the caves he beheld while in its depths, which deeply impresses the elf.
In the later workings, Tolkien writes that Gimli went with Legolas to the Undying Lands - the only Dwarf to do so.

JRR Tolkien was a genius author. Not only did he come up with the world of Middle-earth and its races, he came up with the languages that they spoke. Fully realized and written languages. Elfish, Dwarfish, Black Speech, Rohirric, and several others. That, and he came up with incredible lore for his world. Lord of the Rings is the gold standard of Fantasy genre books.

Yeah as a hobby writer working on a medieval fiction, his work is almost impossible to comprehend. Not the work itself, but how he did it, where he got the inspiration. He's the Mozart of literature, and that's perhaps downplaying him. Even crazier when you consider he felt he hadn't done 20% of what he wanted to do. He was of a mind to re-do everything he'd already done, and had at least two more stories in mind.
      What an absolute legend!

      Hi Just Me.
If I remember correctly J R R was an expert on the Anglo Saxon history and language. Apparently his inspiration for the Rohirrim was his sense of loss at the fall of the Anglo Saxons after Hastings. He always maintained that if the Anglo Saxons had embraced cavalry as the Celts had before them instead of being a purely infantry based society they would have beaten the Normans and their culture would have survived. The Rohirrim are the Anglo Saxons as J R R would have loved them to be.

Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold
    Clamavi De Profundis
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To seek our pale enchanted gold
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep
In hollow halls beneath the fells
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword
    On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
    The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun
Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
    To claim our long-forgotten gold
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold, where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves
The pines were roaring on the heights
The wind was moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale
The dragon's ire, more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail
The mountain smoked beneath the moon
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom (the tramp of doom)
They fled the hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon
The world was young, the mountains green
No stain yet on the moon was seen
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone
He named the nameless hills and dells
He drank from yet untasted wells
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere
And saw a crown of stars appear
As gems upon a silver thread
Above the shadows of his head
The world is grey, the mountains old
    The forge's fire is ashen-cold
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls
The shadow lies upon his tomb
    In Moria, in Khazad-dûm
But still the sunken stars appear
    In dark and windless Mirrormere
There lies his crown in water deep
Till Durin wakes again from sleep
Far over the Misty Mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day
To win our harps and gold from him!
The wind was on the withered heath
But in the forest stirred no leaf
There shadows lay by night and day
And dark things silent crept beneath
The wind came down from mountains cold
And like a tide it roared and rolled
The branches groaned, the forest moaned
And leaves were laid upon the mould
The wind went on from West to East
All movement in the forest ceased
But shrill and harsh across the marsh
    Its whistling voices were released
The grasses hissed, their tassels bent
The reeds were rattling, on it went
O'er shaken pool under heavens cool
Where racing clouds were torn and rent
It passed the Lonely Mountain bare
And swept above the dragon's lair
There black and dark lay boulders stark
And flying smoke was in the air
It left the world and took its flight
Over the wide seas of the night
The moon set sail upon the gale
And stars were fanned to leaping light
Under the Mountain dark and tall
The King has come unto his hall!
His foe is dead, the Worm of Dread
And ever so his foes shall fall!
The sword is sharp, the spear is long
The arrow swift, the Gate is strong
The heart is bold that looks on gold
The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep
In hollow halls beneath the fells
    On silver necklaces they strung
The light of stars, on crowns they hung
    The dragon-fire, from twisted wire
The melody of harps they wrung
The mountain throne once more is freed!
Oh, Wandering folk, the summons heed!
Come haste! Come haste! Across the waste!
The king of friend and kin has need
Now we call over the mountains cold
'Come back unto the caverns old!'
Here at the Gates the king awaits
His hands are rich with gems and gold
The king has come unto his hall
Under the Mountain dark and tall
The Worm of Dread is slain and dead
And ever so our foes shall fall!
Farewell we call to hearth and hall
Though wind may blow and rain may fall
We must away, ere break of day
Far over the wood and mountain tall
To Rivendell, where Elves yet dwell
In glades beneath the misty fell
Through moor and waste we ride in haste
And whither then we cannot tell
With foes ahead, behind us dread
Beneath the sky shall be our bed
Until at last our toil be passed
Our journey done, our errand sped
We must away! We must away!
We ride before the break of day

I really adore the aesthetic of dwarves in fantasy. The vast underground cities, the huge statues, the mining, the digging; the intricate metalwork and gems; the heavy weapons and armour; the sombre thoughtfulness and unfathomable abyss of their world; the kingdoms of earth and fire... I hate it when they're shown as bumbling fat jolly drunkards in some universes (like in WoW).

    Lyrics:
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
    On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
    The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
    To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
    The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
    And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
    The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old...

    The dark filled the room
    The fire died down
    The shadows were lost....
    And still they played on.

It haunts me. It’s too beautiful, too sad, too detailed. I dread it and love it. Tolkien wasn’t a fictional writer, he told the story of the age before us that we long have forgotten and then he sailed the western sea.

Listening to this, I felt the love of beautiful things move through me. The desire to see great mountains, smell the pine-trees and waterfalls, explore the caves, wear a sword instead of a walking stick.
Amazing rendition of the full song
