Lyrics:
She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby
And I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin'
And keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go.
He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a whacked out weirdo and a lovebug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
(Spoken) In spite of ourselves
Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

❤ same. 62 over here
65 and I love John Prine!
If you ever need to know how important John Prine was to Music and Humanity, just read these comments. I miss you John.
It's yrs later and I still end up listening to john Prine. I can still hear my Grammy saying Amy turn that up. Makes me cry but I'm glad I have her reminding me of memories on how much she loved me. She gave up her life to take care of a 5 year old girl and gave me so much love and happiness. She died in 1989. I miss her so much
😊
❤
God bless your G-Ma.
every time I drink I end up here
Join the club. sigh.
Right, I get it.
Me too ✋️!!!!
lol same
Meet your pal! Just popped the cork and looking forward to a night of great music on my own ! I'll be laughing and crying and singing along till the wine is gone.x
Quite possibly the greatest love song ever written
Prine is a legend, but I'm here for Iris! Who's with me?
I suddenly lost my partner of 34 years last last month. I'm devastated,so here I am at 4:05 am, can't sleep, and thinking of the songs we used to sing to each other. I miss her so much. We thought this song was written for us and it made us so happy.💔
Aw😢.
So sorry for your loss! 💔My husband passed away last year 3 days after or second anniversary. We considered using this as our wedding song as we exited the church but thought it might be too racey for church. We instead chose I have met my love today also by JP. Equally fitting. ❤️❤️❤️
I lost my spouse in May of '22. We were almost married 46 years and known each other for over 50 years. This was one of our two songs. The other was "you may be right...I may be crazy". I get teary when i hear this, but also so happy for all those years we had together.
Terribly sorry for your loss. My wife of 23 years passed Oct/2016. These days, I can barely listen to John without tearing up.
I hope you're doing okay.
been with my husband 37 years and he came to me this morning with this song This is us to a t I swear to God!
Awwwwww...that's so sweet and funny too... I'm getting through my second divorce...but life is still good in spite of shit
I was a young man contemplating suicide one night. I came across Austin City Limits and heard you singing Sam Stone. I don't think I'd ever heard a more beautiful song. So I kept watching, and watching it again and again until the sun came up. I cant thank you enough for your music that night and will be forever grateful to both yourself and Austin City Limits for saving a young mans life that night. You are gone but will never ever be forgotten. I just wish I could have seen you live so I could have thanked you for saving my life that night in person. R.I.P beautiful poet.
The timing of u watching that show was no coincidence. There are no coincidences. Glad it happened.🤗🙏✌
He saved my life with a song one sad night, also.
wow...
Oh man Chris .. I wish I could hug you.
Take care
Chris Cawthorn thank God:ess you are still
Here. Death is inevitable so lets not rush towards it!
I feel your pain
I understand
Love LP
Thank you John for all your great music.
Two years ago, I dedicated this song to my Husband on our 13th Wedding Anniversary. O8/30/23 will be our 15th yr anniversary. Sadly, my husband passed away 7 months ago from COVID. I'll be posting this song on our upcoming anniversary and I KNOW my husband will be enjoying it from Heaven
Never heard this song and I can tell you guys were meant to be if you dedicated this to your husband. Sorry for your loss. Sounds like you lived life together and happy. One day you'll be singing this again belting it at each other
The airport virus killed John Prine in the 1st month of the disease
just think, now he gets the free concert!
My husband died from Covid a couple of months before yours. We, too, shared a passion for John Prine, and for this song in particular. I hope they're both hearing John sing it now.
im so sorry for your loss your lucky you had him some people never get to experience that
Isn't it strange that so few music lovers have never heard of John Prine.
.Ever
I must admit to being one of those fools. And then, one day, during the height of the pandemic, I heard that this artist by the name of John Prine was sick. Once I learned that he was a fellow Chicago guy, I decided to give him a listen. I listened to "Sam Stone" from this very same performance. I have never been the same since. And I'm sure that's true for a whole lot of his fans out there in this crazy world.
Correct. Forgive me. Man.
Very sad isn't it?
Iris DeMent's voice is perfect for this duet.
Soooo agree.
Fell in love with Iris the first time!
Agreed...
She's beautiful

This is not good
The happiest, goofiest, funniest love song ever. So why does it put a lump in my throat? And how is this not everybody’s go-to wedding song? Pure magic
Happens to me everytime
Tears of joy ,tears of.......
Because you are a male and have logic, feelings and rational. Something woman have forgotten and lost in favor of money and multiple orgazims
does the same thing to me...never understood why.

@@scottfahdt177 You know why, even if you can't articulate it, deep inside, you just know.
This is an amazing song in so many ways... reading the comments makes it even more special to see how other people connect. There is so much love and genuine, caring people that make this whole world a beautiful place. Sometimes we don't see it but there's no denying it when you read these comments and see what people feel. Thanks to all who have opened up and shared their experiences. It's not an easy thing to do.
Yup. My husband died two months ago, and this was our song. I asked myself tonight, "Do you want to cry?" And I guess I did want to cry, because I played this song, and I cried.
love to you
Brave enough to cry, alive enough feel, wise enough to smile
God bless you! My husband and I also consider this our song I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers
❤
Me and my girlfriend wrote a verse to this song we recently split up and I feel like I'm dying we used to sing this song to the other lot my heart is so broken
John Prine and Iris, enough said, RIP John, you made the world a better place
He absolutely did!❤
I never knew there was such a great person like him until I learned of him and his music what is pain and sorrows and his happiness in his ability to tell it all in his songs for everybody to enjoy rest in peace John
I think all I can really say is It In Spite of Ourselves
Iris Dement is an angel just sharing her voice with us mortals.
My husband and I had our 2nd anniversary renewal in a chapel in Vegas. The guy who was Elvis freaked about me walking down the aisle to 'in spite of ourselves" and said he LOVED IT! Who is this guy!
John Prine....look him up
John Prine, the best Folk singer ever, bar none!
We lost a American treasure tonight. RIP
We really did.
So sad. He was one of the greats
Yes we did. Prayers and thoughts to his family and friends. 😢
Not fair... he'd fought cancer so bravely and was great at being a wise, old sage. But, in a way, his musical legacy gives him an immortality that most of us will never attain.
my thought and prayers are with his family and friends in this difficult time
came here after hearing of his passing, I’m heart broken.
Emily B same:( so sad
Iove his raspy voice and genuine humaneness.
He was such a part of my youth...he will be missed, but he will live on in my heart.
It’s so sad :(
RIP John. Such a sad day. I listen to his music every day & always will
This song automatically change my state of mind, make mi smile on chorus every time
We always had pet names for each other. This song came up again after I brought her home from the hospital. I started calling her my "big door prize." It made her smile when she didn't have much to smile about. Cancer took her from me just months later. She is still the best thing I ever had, my big door prize. How fortunate we are to have such creative artists such as Mr. Prine that help define the things that matter to us most in life.
Sending love. you're worth more than a like.
Prayers and love to you 🙏
With your words you carry your wife’s beauty and your love for each other into the world. Thank you for sharing this.
♥️

"Those who say America has no culture have never read Mark Twain or listened to John Prine"
Wish I could remember who said that to give credit, how apropos!

I met John Prine in the early Eighties at Johnny D's outside of Boston...he was a sweet man who just wanted to make people feel a little better with his songs...he nailed it.
John Prine is probably the best songwriter the world will ever know. He says so much in each lyric. On the surface, it seems amusing or simple, but it's so incredibly deep when you break it down.
He says a lot by only saying a little. He is the complete deal. Love him ♡ ♡ ♡
@@jacquismith3277if only I could find my IRIS we would sing have eggs&catsup Oxygen Beer and shave each other
The man - the legend. *RIP, sir,* and thank you.
This was my wedding dance. Eight years married, twenty together. Long live Prine.
U guys know how to have fun! Here's to 20 more
I miss John Prine so much. We lost some great ones in the last two years. 💔
Hello!!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan!.... Stay safe!
Can't help but fall in love with Iris here in this story with that gorgeous folksy voice.
I’m 70yrs old and an Irishman . I accidentally found John days before he left life behind. John had the gift of telling real stories and poetry in his music and songs. I believe John was and still is America’s gift to the world . He could speak to the centre of our humanity in happy and sometimes sad lyrics & music. I remember him and am happy. I listen to his songs most days out of love for his gift to us and respect for the man he was.🇨🇮
Right on brother. Fiona his wife is Irish , from Headford Mayo where my family is from. It was painful to hear of John's passing but his music will be with me till my final day
I've listened to John's music since 1975 I was just 15 year's old and had never had music make me smile and laugh at times when I was feeling down... I hope that 9 mile cigarette ain't been smoked yet by the time I see you again. RIP BROTHER
Hey there im.irish too and just listening to him for the 1st time tonight he is brillant..im a happy man tonight
She's very amazing as well I love to listen to her sing this song amazing to both
John’s skills with lyrics would appeal to the Irish, as would his use of music to forge friendships among strangers. His words make magic out of ordinary things.
Love how Iris just quietly steps forward and steps back with those Appalachian pipes. So modest, yet so impressive.
I first heard this song from a man I met 5 years ago. That man is now my partner for life and I still cry when I hear this song, not just tears of sadness but also tears of joy. Thank you John for your wonderful lyrics and beautiful music! I will forever be grateful to you. RIP.
Never listened to John prine much til after his passing, one of the greatest... never heard a bad song yet....wish I would of paid attention more when he was here entertaining us....he made everybody else so much better....great man n musician...RIP.....
I wish I could give this song a thumbs up every time I listen to it.❤❤❤❤❤
I know it's been a bit now since John passed, but I can't help getting teary eyed whenever I see/hear him singing.
I live on Vancouver Island Canada and a few nights ago ( Friday June 9th 2023 ) I took myself and my acoustic down to what's known as Whiskey Dock where all the boats come in. Being 11ish at night I figured I was alone so I played 3-4 tunes in privacy but as soon as I played Sam Stone, people seemed to come out of the tree's to listen lol. Not blowing my own horn here but I always attract a crowd when I'm singing/playing but I thought I was truly alone this night being so late. By the time I had played a couple more of John's songs, there were a good dozen or so folks standing by just to listen.
Couldn't help feel John's spirit had something to do with it hahahha cause even people as young as about 18 "LOVED" the songs by John.
I feel all of your hearts when you miss him, in my opinion he was the biggest personal loss the world has ever felt in regards to loosing a legend.
We all miss you John more than words could ever explain.
RIP... my friend.
He is MISSED, by so many.
He sure is Paul. I have an uncanny ability to sound like John when I choose to imitate him lol, and it even surprises me sometimes how close I can make my voice sound like him, so much so that if I close my eyes while playing/singing John's tunes, I can almost see him sitting there and it's me listening to him instead of it actually being me if that makes any sense lol..
Anyways Cheers from Canada Feb 3/24

As I get older, I'm thinking this is the greatest song ever written. I've always known John Prine was a fabulous songwriter; but many of his tunes just get better with age.
This and dear Abby
I Agree!!
and souvenirs also...my father in law loved john prine, the first album is and probably will always be the best...here is the link czcams.com/video/7lHkugF0nyI/video.html@@thomasmcfeely8869
Great observation 😂
Dear Abby, the early years, had so much fun with that song, I would bellow it out in the Theater at OUL ,some liked it and some thought I was crazy. It was a win, win for me and I had fun while hanging lights.
God bless you all, this music brings joy, so good !
Rest in paradise John, see u when this shits over buddy!
I met John at the mariposa festival many years ago and he was such a delight to talk to and he was a gentle man as is his voice he will be greatly missed
my parents swear I met him at mariposa too. I like him a whole lot, so I guess it makes sense...JP never needed much praise. Man...it makes me choke up to know he ain't coming around to right things anymore.
But I ain't ever gonna let him go either, and you shouldn't either...
my face can't help but put a big o' grin on it when I hear this song!!!!! John is greatly missed but we are so lucky to be able to go back and listen to his songs.
Hello there 👋 how are you ??
His song inspired me a lot it so amazing. How are you doing dear
John is missing from my life. I've loved his talent for years
You are so missed, John Prine. Hope you are singing up there in heaven and keeping the angels dancing and smiling. Your memory will always be a blessing.
John Prine is a national treasure.
If he ain't he should be Matthew.
Rather, a world treasure.
He sure was. Sad saying that. Was.
John Prine is simply amazing. I found this guy Brett McDaniel, he is good too. Not as well known. I think he plays out of Alabama. So much talent out there you guys. czcams.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/video.html

This is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
I heard this song, and it warmed me to my bones, I played this video for her, and she said, "It's a true, honest redneck love song, heartfelt to marrow of your bones."
We made love to one another that night like we hadn't done in years...
I tell her all the time that she is indeed, my "Big Door Prize"
Thank you for such a heartwarming song, rest in peace brother...

I can’t believe that he passed away. This man is a connection I have with my dad...he’s in lockdown at a nursing home...when he finds out, I won’t be able to comfort him. We need each other for comfort at this moment....
This is just the perfect meeting of Prine and DeMent with the right song, with both vocally beautiful (and looking good too). This will go down in 20 years time as an absolute classic. No doubt about it.
Agreed!
This is such a treasure. We miss you John.

Hello how are you doing today?
Thornton films are like Prine songs down to earth with a redeeming quality regardless of jobs & homes
Has to be one of the cutest songs ever. Sitting on top of a rainbow. Spite our nose right off of our faces. Teerrific writin’.
One of the best love songs ever written and sang. R.I.P. John.
He had gold inside of him. The love he shared multiplies exponentially even after his spirit has left his body. Can anybody ever thank him enough?
Hold on John, the world needs your music.
amen, sister. who is gonna play his music?
Frederick Sharon sadly
The world has John Prine's wonderful music. Now, we will sing it in his place and in his spirit.
My first ever John Prine exposure which simultaneously introduced me to Iris DeMent. Two gems in one discovery! Great stuff.
All these replies prove eggs&catsup is the elixer of true love couples sloshing their way through life 2gether
Just discovered this AWESOME song. Hilariously funny, quirky, affectionate and somehow genuine !! Prime is terrific and DeMent couldn't be better! Terrific!!!
I’m so sad to hear about Mr. John Prine. Sending him all the love and healing energy.
In a strange way, this may be the best love song of all time. All heart, no BS. Rest in Peace Handsome John. Tim

Holy Sh## - I just heard Bonnie R. fondly refer to him a few minutes ago and decided to check him out here in UT. I am totally overwhelmed - and with simple, pure beauty.
I didn't know this little, but great world existed. Unforgettable...
John was the most honest, authentic, self-effacing, heart to heart communicator in the folk music world. You listen to one of his songs and you wouldn't hesitate to let him borrow your car or crash on your couch...he'd probably just write a song about it. Gone, but never forgotten.

This was our wedding song. He wrote a real lovely and honest love song for poor folk. He picked quite a lovely lady to sing it with.
I just watched this video for the umpteenth time. Who else can write a romantic song that simultaneously talks about sniffing undies and undying love, while capturing the sweetness of it all?

So sad. World has lost a great one. First heard of John Prine when I gave a guy a lift when I was driving from Sydney back home to Adelaide in about 1978. He put me onto John Prine, Ry Cooder and Tom Waits. What a trio. John Prine was due to play in my home town, Adelaide Australia, next Thursday April 16 at the Thebarton Theatre. April 16 is my birthday and it would have been great to have seen John play. These are very tough times for us all. Condolences to his family. Stay well, stay safe.
John traveled the world, was a willing vessel. Unfortunately, I believe that is why his time was cut short. However, death is an illusion. Our spirits are eternal. Our human shell can only serve us for a short time. Be grateful our spirits live forever. John is with us, just in the ethereal...
Alex White You'll have many friends you've never met who will be thinking about you next week on April 16. Will hope you can enjoy John Prine's music many times on You Tube!
A powerful duet from two amazing artists 👏
Why do some comments suggest that John Prine was almost unknown..
He was a huge star and loved and appreciated in many countries ..🙏
Simply because you never hear him on radio. I have listened to many genres never heard of him till now. God moves in mysterious ways
John WAS unknown to many people. Unlucky people.
I have the "In Spite Of Ourselves We'll End Up Sitting On A Rainbow" sweatshirt - RIP John - Brett Smith

Hello how are you doing?
This is the song my husband and I danced to on our wedding day. 12 years together and it still hold true.
Prine has been in my music collection since the 70's as a teen. My R&R friends could never get it, their mistake. He's a national treasure along with his late pal Steve Goodman.

John, you are a true American treasure. Unfortunately, covid 19 knows no boundaries. Be at peace, friend! We love you!
Miss you, John Prine! You are an American treasure.
An international treasure!
I guess I should be grateful that this is the worst loss I I personally have experienced due to the pandemic. But it hurts.
This song is my mom and dad's song. They've been married over 25 years now, and both have seen John Prine in concert several times. They are both currently sobbing at the news of John's passing. Rest in peace to the greatest songwriter ever, and thanks for being the background music in my parents' marriage all these years, through the ups and downs. Sometimes all it would take is my dad putting this record on, and the argument they just had disappeared... the magic cure. We love you, John, in spite of ourselves.
He was a legend
Beautiful story. You brought tears to my eyes. So true. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah... fuck 2020.
He cast a spell, that's for sure. RIP, John!
Madeleine, That's a lovely story and beautiful tribute. God bless you & your parents. John Prine will be missed!
So much love for John Prine. This one hurts.
I absolutely love this song. John Prine, you left this earth with a lot of smiles on our faces.
Hello!!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan!.... Stay safe!
Really great song. Makes me smile every time I hear it. ❤
Our family lived in US from late 60's through the 70's. My father loved Mr. John Prine and he still have his old records. Unfortunately, they are all moldy now because these days my father is mostly bedridden and hardly listens to music. We miss you, Mr.John Prine!
