I was, just yesterday, explaining to my 92yo dad that whenever you ran into a JP fan, you could be sure you were meeting a good human being. This is the sweetest comment section on youtube.❤
Ted Bundy was a Prine fan at UW
And you can be sure of that
There's always an exception to the rule. He was a demon who focused on terrorizing and preying upon innocent victims. It's a sad and revealing thing for you to bring such a comment forward on such a positive video! Take a look in a mirror and see if you're just wanting to shock people, or if you're just deranged like your aforementioned demon.@ClydeHUC
John Prine is not dead. Until the last person who ever heard his songs dies, he will never die. peace my brother.
Amen!
He lives through the music. His spirit will never die...as long as we play his music.
I LOVE your attitude! THANK YOU ❤
yep I stumbled on this tonight,i,m new to it all,i,m totally taken by this, wonderful.
Viva John Prine!
John Prine sang to my teenage heart. Now, he speaks to my 60 year old heart.❤
Makes me cry my friend.
What a beautiful song just be on the run
Me too. I miss him so much.

John Prine is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
Yes!!!
What a beautiful comment that is.
Oh my God, what a tribute 👏
So positive and true!Thank God, Thank you!❤

I’m 60 years old. Lifelong Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Leonard Cohen , Chris Smithers , etc fan. So how, how, oh my god how is it that I never heard of John Prine until yesterday? I will never have time on this earth to adequately grasp and appreciate the depth and beauty of this miraculous artists work. I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me.
I'm 24, 25 this coming July. When I was 11 my mom met a guy. A long, long story short, the only good thing to come from it is our love for certain music now, Prine being one of them. I am so grateful to have his music, it has helped me through a lot of tough times. He has such beautiful and deep words, and the perfect personality to go with it all.
there are many artists I'm just discovering at 64...enjoy the ride...you won't lose with jp
I was daydreaming at one of his concerts when I should have been paying attention but he inspired me to write one of my better songs, so i give him credit.(editors note: my song isnt that good and im pretty tired of that one now)
Exactly my feeling!
Me too Paul and I am in my 60's also, a real music lover of all genres. I can't believe this amazing artist was under my radar for so long! I heard he has Covid 19, praying he will make a good recovery, not ready to lose him now I've found him!
I would trade EVERY DAMN CONCERT I EVER SAW just to be in that room! This ONE video makes You Tube worth it's invention!!
Absolutely!!! There is a love flowing from John through every audience member!!! I have watched this video over and over. I shared it with my parents who grew up with John. They loved it and watch it over and over...
Me too.this is one of my favorites.A legend!
Me too, didnt know who he was until i saw this.

I just told my ol man ,, that must b someone private party ,, to have so many greats ,,in same room ,,singing along ,,we saw him in 90's in Birmingham, Alabama,, we where invited to after party ,, but my ol man had a job ,remember when men worked everyday,, I just told him if we had known ,,that u didnt have to work just say ,, I got this or that wrong when in reality,,they r able just sorry ,, anyway I digress, I told him ,, we should have stayed ,, but ,,my man is a good man ,, he went to work ,, but sure hate we missed that party ,, rest in peace John ,you gave us so much more than music u gave us our youth back ,u partied with us, u made us laugh u made us think 🤔,u made us cry ,but u never left us ,, sayin ,, well that was disappointing,, as so many concerts do these days ,, not that we get to many anymore ,, dont cha hate time ,, it takes everything good from us,,

When you have Gordon Lightfoot sitting in like all the others, that says it all about John Prine right there!

When Gordon breaks into tears after John saying it's an honour playing for him. I miss human emotion like that.
Create it
I thought the same thing. That's one of the best parts of this incredible video.
And love and kindess.
Great music soothes the human soul. John Prine was a master at writing / performing such deep music. What would it have been like to know him?
My heros
I was operating the board when John was interviewed by Bob Edwards at XM.
When the interview was over and Bob left the room, John hung around and
we began to chat. There was no one else in the studio. When he learned my son was a Marine stationed in Iraq,
John picked up on my concern for my son's well being. The next 30 minutes I spent
with him talking and listening are very precious to me. I was a huge fan before we met
but I'll alway remember this wonderful man for his kindness and compassion.
that's an amazing story. Thank you for sharing it
Thanks for sharing what must have been very special moment. Hope your son is home safe.
Wow my wife's brother, our brother, has been back and forth to Afghanistan I try to help him send him stuff and help him see his kids. It's a family's sacrifice and anyone who understands it is a good person . Be glad we had such a good person here so long and bring up the next ones to be the same way. I play them John prine.
Thank you from beyond my ability
He always left the impression that his fame meant little to him. He always seemed to have a double dose of humble. Thanks for a wonderful story that reaffirms that belief.
If you love John Prine, you are a friend of mine.
Thank you,

This to me is simply incredible. John Prine performing in front of Gordon Lightfoot is one for the ages. I have watched this many times over and am blown away each and every time. Epic.

This is campfire music
What a beautiful night of music. I feel so blessed to find this tonight. John is a gem that keeps shining brighter the longer you listen and to have Gordon Lightfoot in the audience just makes it so much better.
RIP gentlemen and thank you!
To see tears in Gordon Lightfoot’s eyes, listening to John Prine….❤️
My first concert was John Prine at Massey Hall back in 2009. I was 7 and my mum was supposed to take her best friend to the show but after months of begging she surprised me with the ticket because she knew I loved him just as much as she did. After the show his manager came out and gave me John's guitar pick, I still have it to this day. Rest in peace Mr.Prine
Awesome
That's cool as hell man! I hope u use it!

I gotta say, Todd Snider is carrying that storyteller torch.
I am 65 and have been listening to John Prine since I was in high school. This Chicago mailman is truly an American treasure, and I was so sad when he died. He was a poet and a musician and I will listen to him all my years. RIP JP
Agree. People die. It's OK. Not a tragedy cause he's a singer.
the song " sam stone " made me quit speed and probably saved my life in 77 . it was nearly 40 years later that I found who John prine was . now he will forever be one of the two most important singer wordsmiths in my world
who is the other one?
I heard John Prine a couple years ago. I Was amazed at his song writing and guitar picking then and I'm still amazed.I would've loved to have gone rainbow trout fishing at any time or place with Johnny..Anyone that has praise and admiration for Gordon Lightfoot is "aces" in my book.

Tonight I just read that Gordon Lightfoot has died 😢, and had to come watch this moment again when John sings his tribute to Gordon (at 6:36). Two of my favorites gone now but never forgotten❤❤
Who could not love John?
What a soul.
Well put .
Interesting how in his later years he’s got a Bob Dylan rasp, compared to his earlier sound. Oh well, even with the hell that he went through with his health in the last 20 years, it still didn’t rob his voice of character.
I’ve only just discovered his work but how could I have never known it for all these years? It’s like someone turned the lights on in my head and said, ‘Hello in there!’
❤
No American Music more perfect than John Prine and Gordon Lightfoot. So glad to see this. Thank You.
I agree, except that Gordon Lightfoot was Canadian. No worries though, he was loved by all who heard him.
I cant imagine there ever being another john prine. there is something fragile and gentle and huge and fearless and full of love and precious and intimate. I will miss him like I don't miss other performers. I feel I lost my father again.
Rich Perez I love your words. I’m heartbroken
Rich, I feel so much the same way. I saw John Prine in September last year at Red Rocks in Colorado. He danced and shuffled off of the stage with such joy and happiness and it made me cry because that's exactly something my dad would have done, dancing in his old man way. I miss my dad so much, and John Prine reminded me so much of him in his joy and fun. Prine was truly a national treasure as an artist and as a human being. We were blessed to be alive at the same time with him.
I cried my eyes out when I heard....I thought he was getting better.
@@nunyabidness9895 Yeah I agree. I was so scared we were going to lose him. Then we didn't hear anything for a week, and I thought surely that was a good sign. Then suddenly he's gone! And you realize how fragile life is, and how lucky we have been to live in such great years for music. My friends and I have been playing Prine songs for almost 50 years. And it's impossible to ever replace a guy like John. His wit and compassion, and the way he can evoke such deep raw emotion with a couple of lines of lyrics, he was one of a kind! Yes I cried too... But I take solace in knowing he's having that vodka and giner ale, and the cigarette that's nine miles long, surrounded by friends and family in Heaven.
AND THERE NEVER WILL BE ANOTHER LIKE JOHN-PRINE EVEN IF YOU WAIT A TRILLION YEARS !!!!!!!! JOHN IS THE ONLY ARTIST THAT CAN MAKE ME LAUGH ONE MINUTE , THEN CRY THE NEXT !!!!!
I'm wrecked. He was everyone's storyteller, the best chronicler of all of our tumult. There's a hole in our universe now with his echo in it.
Beautifully written, Mari.
I'm reading your comment while listening to Neil Degrasse describe the size of a hole discovered recently in space and he says there just aren't any words we typically use to adequately describe the size of that emptiness. What are the chances.
Best thing I can say is that JP was never background music. You had to stop what you were doing and listen and laugh or cry, probably both within one song.
@@shanerowe5289 So true.
@@robertparadis3395 That's our work as humans, to fill the void (ideally), not make it bigger.
I thought of this video… hearing the passing of Gordon Lightfoot… last night. I remember how moved he was listening to John sing. I was grateful to see John at Radio City Music Hall on what would turn out to be his last tour. His passing hit very hard… he had survived cancer… twice… but Covid stole him away. Now Gordon Lightfoot has left us also…
It’s so strange to realize that as I get older myself… I shouldn’t be surprised to hear about people I grew up listening to or watching… are gradually living their last years… and one day they are … gone. We all have our limited time… I guess… it’s just the way it is. Hope that John’s spirit was able to be aware of Gordon’s spirit’s arrival… two great voices… reunited… 🎵💐🎵
Thank You… both… for the music 🎶 🎼🎵🎶
You are both greatly appreciated… R.I.P.
I can feel this. In the fibers of my soul. From John's emotion to Mr. Lightfooot singing and remembering another place in time.ive listened to this 3x today. And I've sobbed everytime. And I'm thankful. Rest in paradise john
".......You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness. You're out there runnin' just to be on the run". Only John Prine can deliver the mail like that.
Alabama 3 did a great cover.
This is absolutely lovely. I don't know if I've ever seen two more gentle and genuine souls sitting in the same room as John Prine and Gordon Lightfoot. The image of Gordon smiling and singing along as he savors John's music is as sweet as it gets. This whole scene, especially hearing my all-time favorite song, "Summer's End," reaches deep inside me...filling me with nothing but peace, love and gratitude...

I fell in love with John's music when I heard his first album at a record store in Kansas City & I bought it on the spot & took it home & listened to it over & over. Sam Stone ripped my heart out. I''m 73 now & I had a lot of friends who went to Vietnam I lost a lot them in Vietnam & I lost many more to the drugs they took to try to forget the physical & mental pain from the war. John sang their story so well. He expressed loss, pain & humor in his songs. I also loved Please Don't Bury Me & lots more.. His concerts were huge highlights of my life! I've loved him for 50 yrs & still do. .

"A question ain't really a question, if you know the answer too." Gold.
He had so many verses that meant so much. That is one of them.
I've played Prine's songs for almost 50 years. One time I was singing Far From Me and when I was done, someone asked what the heck does "an old broken bottle looks just like a diamond ring" mean? I couldn't fathom how anybody couldn't see the symbolism in that line..... Also always loved "I guess that love's like a Christmas card, decorate a tree, throw it in the yard" too. But John Prine had so many evocative and eloquent lines in his hundreds of tunes. Cheers!

Have you ever been in church and the preacher is preaching a sermon and it feels like he knows something you did last night and he is preaching right at you? Prine's lyrics give you that same feeling.

Tony Morris well said. You my friend captured it entirely.
Tony, how right you are....he's the preacher all of us need. The "happier" the John Prine song, the deeper I knew the lyrics would be and the closer I would listen. He exemplified what it means to be an "artist" in everything he did.

John prine has passed on,but his music will live on for ever and a day.rest in peace John.

We needed John Prine
very dramatic
Heaven is John and Gord playing their classics. God bless you both. Get the party started up there....
Summer's end is the perfect song, I can see the doubt in the eyes of the audience at first, of John Prine wins them over one by one. My hat goes off to the man who put made this happen.
My heart is breaking and melting at the same time. Lightfoot and Prine in the same room. I'm DONE.
Simply a blessing
Watching Him rock and sing along with His eyes closed..My soul lies weeping on the floor.
RIP to this great artist
To see Mr. Lightfoot tearing up too. Those two shared a bond. Priceless. Much love, RIP John Prine. 🙏❤
My husband and I had the same reaction. And the shared respect for each other - beautiful.
John Prine is real, fearless, purely transparent and kind. A living legend. I have deep admiration!
The term National Treasure is overused and often misunderstood.
This man was a National Treasure.
John's unassuming benevolence sets everyone at ease in the audience even though he knows he has them all in the palm of his hands. Absolute master class
Masterclass... truly an accurate description of these 45 minutes.
"...sweet songs never last too long on broken radios." Sleep well John, thanks for all music, what a gift, what a gift...
John was always an old soul. It's fitting that he has reached perfection in his old age.
We were lucky to have had him a good while. He would want you to smile [so do I friend] peace
RIP 💔 John and Gordon! Two masters of Writing and inspirational music! They live on with the gifts they gave us. ❤
Two of Bob Dylan's favorite song writers
Yes, Jimmy Buffett too! 😭 loved Gordon ❤️
Yes, and we've lost all three 😢

Rewatching this with tears streaming down my face. RIP John. You'll always be loved, and will forever be missed. ❤
There will be tears in heaven but Jesus will wipe them all away 🙏
Same my friend, lost a good one with john💔 bet he’s got that vodka and ginger ale
I know, me too!!!!
@@riggidyromulidas4554 and a cigarette that's 9 miles long.
Here is this 61 yr old singing his lungs out to "Summers End" in the kitchen with tears streaming down his face.
You don't smile when JP sings Sam Stone. You cry. It's a rule.
In a league of his own, John speaks to me like no other. You live on in my heart and in my head. Wisdom. Calling us out to look and SEE.
I love the story of how he wrote "Tree of Forgiveness". I've loved everything he ever wrote but I sincerely believe it was his best. If you can listen to "Summer's End" and not tear up, you're dead inside.
Summers End kills me. ❤
@@Elaine-oo4qp I had to listen to it about 12 times before I stopped tearing up.
As I sit high in the mountains of Colorado under a full moon, trying to accept that Mr. Prine has gone, I am filled with gratitude for his music, as it has shaped me just as the highest of peaks that surround me. Gods speed John. Sing on.
feeling the same way here, northwest corner of NJ
Same here, from central Kentucky
My husband and I spoke of him this weekend walking the beaches of Oregon. We just lack full appreciation he is gone. What a loss.

Thought I was reading some john prine type lyrics there
Mr. Prine is an American treasure that the world is privileged to hear and enjoy.
A truly monumental talent.
between him & Randy Newman....im good.
yep
until i scrolled down i was just gonna say that same.
@@googoo-gjoob please dun forget Leonard Cohen, a great story teller:)
add his work to that of guy clark and townes van zandt and you never have to listen to anything else... it's all covered ... at least anything that matters anyway
Sam Stone gut punches me as much today as it did almost 50 years when I first heard it. What a song.
Hell yes it does, then he puts out Summers End, about addiction, and I can barely stand to watch the video.... killer
Been listening to John since the 70s his words and music inspires, he touches your heart and soul, his music will never die.
"You know she still laughs with me, but she waits just a second too long"...Nobody writes lyrics like John Prine.
John deserves a PEN award for his passages and prose. He is the literary equivalent of the great short story writers of middle America like John Carver.
He is the best song writer & musician, imho
Omg love you John
I used to go to The Riverboat in Toronto in the early 70’s . I missed Prine but got to see his buddy Steve Goodman and folks like Eric Andersen . What a magical time. Like you said Jim nobody writes like Prine . Bob Dylan even said that . Learned every song on Diamonds in the Rough. He’s the best.
@Jim Sisko: Read an interview with JP where he talked about being drawn to “the spaces in between” and being able to express them in his song writing.
John is an underated talent and deserves Way more recognition than he's ever had. God Bless John Prine.
❤️
Steve Okula: It's good that we say "God Bless" to people. I do. Every once and a good while, I think God says, "I already have." Of course that would be if God thought like me.
To call this performance extraordinary is an understatement!
Cryin and laughin with John Prine here in Montana. What a treasure he is!
I'm in tears. I can't being to express how much I loved this man and how sad I am that he has left us. I want to write something here worthy of this man..but John already gave us all the best words about life and being human....so instead I'm just listening to his brilliance and missing him without any hope of ever expressing how much his music meant to me as well as John told us about ourselves.
I hear you
Be grateful we had him 70 odd years. I know you are, I'm not on a high horse; I'm in the dumps with you my friend. But he would want you to smile and so do I.
@@youcanbesmartaskhow3857 Beautifully put.
You have expressed what I've been feeling - I have wanted to write about how much he's meant to me but he has said so many beautiful words that I have fallen wordless.
You did just fine :)
I describe him to people as my friend, though he doesn't know me. I cry listening to his funny songs, and laugh at his sad songs. He's just about my best friend.
That's the light of humanity. Nice battery charge, eh?
I would submit that he does know you. He writes for himself to all of us.
That's a touching tribute.
Mr Prine can make you laugh, cry, and think all within a 3 and a half minute span
William I was just listening and grinning and crying. I so can relate.
A true American treasure. RIP Mr. John Prine.
One of the most beautiful performances I've ever seen. John Prine is a National Treasure and an authentic slice of Americana.
Let's toast John Prine forever at every Happy Hour. Picture him in his rock band, smoking a cigarette 9 miles long, kissing his sweetheart. So happy that his "manager" Fiona got him to write The Tree of Forgiveness. And his duets with Iris Dement will live to eternity. RIP
Wow..found your comment on house of stombo..john prone is the best almost all I listen to late at night..discovered him, lately
I'm so sad this beautiful man is gone, but no matter how long he lived, his music is going to live a very long time.
What a talent to be able to be able to write songs that can make you both laugh and cry. Such a special person and beautiful soul. And so relatable, feels like hanging with a friend.
What a wonderful document. The intimacy of the performance ads an extra dimension to his songs. A true homage to this great man.
As John is in a battle against Covid-19, I write this with knowing John might not ever be able to perform for us ever again. I am 32 and a Prine fan since I can remember. My parents took me to my first Prine concert when I was in 9th grade. The way he connects with his fans through his storytelling and songs is amazing. A true national treasure. Get well soon John!!
Fuck coronavirus, we will never forget JP.
John Prine is about the only artist who says "this is a new song" at a live show and it's greatly welcomed. Everyone wanted to hear new things he had to say. R.I.P. JP.
It's because the new songs feel like they've been with you forever the first time you hear them.
Such things are rare, to be sure. I witnessed the same reaction at a Janis Ian concert.
yeah usually they hear "this is a new song" as TIME TO PEE AND BUY ANOTHER DRINK.
Cause he saved jem's too. Folk music, especially nashville so cut throat, he waited for the internet. N we all gained... Bless this man
Just found out about John Prime from Raul Malo, beautiful songs and person and he had already passed away.
Me at 75 now and just found about this gentleman singer, songwriter. Goes to show you it's never too late to discover 💐🤠🇵🇭🇺🇲. Lived in Royse City, Texas and now retired in the Philippines. God Bless us all
"Far From Me" takes on such sweet and sharp poignancy now that John and Gord have entered eternity.
This was beautiful. I hope he's smoking that cigarette up there in heaven. Thank you, John Prine.
I'm smiling ear to ear with tears running down my face.
I know it is so sad. He was so wonderful. :(
Love him
don't be so dramatic
he is....and will always be missed...an honest..real genuis..
Thank you humbly sir for all the excellent music and positive energy you gave the world.
@@hoss-lk4bgi suspect you dont have many friends...but instead

As long as there are recordings of John playing live, I will never be alone. My greatest regret is never seeing him live when I had the chance. Rest easy, John.
Saw him live many times. Once with Bonnie Raitt and Tom Waits. My husband wasn't a fan, but now he knows all the songs after hearing them almost 35 years.
I saw some of the greats live; Bowie, Sting, Queen, Stones, U2 to name a few. Greatest concert ever was Prine, I think it was 2010 or 2011? I was amazed by his energy. He was perfection. I am so glad I was able to see him live!!!!
He's puts on a hell of a show, there can be all laughs then not a dry face within 2-3 songs. He's truly a legend, long live John we'll never forget you
Went to concerts constantly in 70's and 80's, and agree with you that John was and is the best concerts I ever attended. Saw him many times starting in late 70's and 80's. Best show was with my husband when we were dating and he was with Bonnie Raitt. Saw him with Bonnie and solo many times. He talked to the audience like we were personal friends.
I was fortunate that my friend David Kaelin introduced me to John Prine's classic Hello in There when we were 18. David was an old soul much like John who discovered this masterpiece written about old people by a young guy when he was young as well. Been appreciating John Prine for almost 60 years now.
