- Featuring Billy Strings and his band.
When was the last time you heard someone referred to as a "Whiz Kid"? Well, if you've ever seen Billy Strings play guitar you know the term fits him perfectly. Billy, raised in Michigan and now residing in Nashville, is a twenty four year-old phoneme who is one of the most blistering flatpickers in all the land. Join Billy and his crackerjack band as they celebrate the legend of Arthel "Doc" Watson, the man who arguably has had the most profound influence on the way the acoustic guitar is played as a lead instrument in folk, old-time, and bluegrass music today!
In india we have no clue about Blue grass - Man this is real music - Very humble musicians - no hype - no special sets or costumes
Yep! Bluegrass is awesome! The stories these songs tell. A lot if notal of them are based on true stories....they are life lessons for everyone to learn from.
Welcome to the coolest music in the world!
Bluegrass music is a tradition-based modern style of string band music. Typically a bluegrass band consists of four to seven performers who sing while accompanying themselves on acoustic string instruments such as the guitar, double bass, fiddle, five-string banjo, mandolin, steel guitar, and Dobro
Blue Grass is True Grass.
I love you, And you’re appreciation for the amount of soul that goes into this kind of style. I’m inspired to just belt out my lyrics now, all the while moving to the sounds of my strum and truly making music.
Check out Billy Strings and Marcus King dust in a baggie It’s an old lullaby. And they made it their own
Im 73 and been playing Bluegrass for 45 years, but Billy Strings only the last 10 years! Aint that crazy? God bless Billy and them boys!
Billy has been picking since he was 3 years old. I believe he is 30 now but younger in this video. That kinda talent doesn’t happen in 10 years but he is still a freak of nature
You probably wont ever see this but my 2yr old daughter is obsessed with this video. She literally asks for Billy Strings with the "bodytaur" (guitar) to sit and watch you sing. And a 2yr old to sit still for a while is a miracle 😂 i think she may br your biggest fan! Keep it up, you are doing amazing!
Awesome 👍
Smart kid! ❤️

You're doing God's work
Thanks for your time Ryan! You helped me out a ton🔥
Who else watches this all the time?
Me. Almost every day! You're not alone.
@@moritzengel2735 Hey plays like Doc and sings like Hank!
I listen on repeat everyday, so grateful I found this... before this it was Bluegrass Sessions Strawberry Music Fest 1999, it's been that long since I've found something to compete let alone (dare I say) top it.
Me too
Oh yes!
Young Billy is a walking encyclopedia of priceless Bluegrass songs. I'm beyond impressed. The young man is not only a seasoned musician but an excellent vocalist. He's a national treasure for sure. Great band all around.
He's really something. National treasure The Naytee award goes to you kid
This is awesome, it's the music I grew up with. Mountain View Arkansas Town Square on the weekends, this what was being played. Billy is awesome. What's impressive is his bassist who doesn't know the songs yet rips em anyhow.
He reminds me of this little girl (well was back in the day, she's got a family and kids now) Lanna Fae Turner out of Mountain View, she could play anything you put in her hands, or Leonard Jones out of Charlotte NC (can play 30+ instruments, sitar, bagpipes, and such, along with normal guitar and banjo etc.) People like that are crazy impressive.
OBX man myself. He is awesome.
People mostly talk about Billy's guitar playing genius, but damn...he is a hell of a good singer too.
Yes! He's got the high lonesome sound down!
And he’s no slouch on the banjo, too!
Amen
@@MsLucyJayne one of the highlights of the show for me, his banjo playing;
I think he's an incredible musician ALL around, but his singing never really vibed with me, and tonight realized that it's the 'nasally" way he sings im not much into; BUT i think his voice will just keep getting better and better, will probably be the best when he's in his 60's if he's blessed with so many days.
Got to give the bass man props. It looks like he’s learning some of these songs on the fly and doing a hell of a job.
i agree. thats absolutely what i was thinking!
He ain't T Michael but definitely holding the pocket. Great job!
If you notice the banjo is keeping in touch with the bass.
He's a keeper 🎵🤠
The future of bluegrass is in good hands with players like this young man!
He’s a rare gem these days
A sad tear rate r fed da
@AhtodaDakota my man
I believe that you are correct
and these men
The guitar picking and the singing is intense. Clean, precise and energetic. This is the most exciting combo I have heard in a long time.
Then the banjo player just kills! WOW.
When the mandolin player started in, my brain about exploded.
The future of bluegrass is bright.
The banjo player is awesome, does not get enough credit.
The poor guy playing the mandolin is 99% off-screen. 😂
The banjo is fire
@@jakeavonas he will most certainly get credit as these talented guys move forward.
Great trio 👏👏👏
Awesome 😊thank you Jesus for giving us these Great awesome talented people. They are Wonderful.Young men with Great old souls.thanks for your great God giving talent.Awesome keep them coming please.
I was born in Asheville North Carolina. Dad got us out of there , for a better life in the triangle.I have always loved bluegrass and Doc is a home boy who was humble and loving man . Im so proud of Billy for keeping his music 🎶 Alive for a whole new generation to appreciate and enjoy.Yes Billy is an old soul, me too. So much talent in one body. Keep educating the people what great music 🎵 is .
Have you heard the song "Fire in the Sky" by Iron Horse? Super cool jam.
My family came down from Roan Mt. Tenn. Billy has shown us so many guitar licks that my flat picking has skyrocketted at 66. Never too ripe to learn.
He has helped to bring the greats back to the forefront. Stanley, Monroe, Martin, and Earl and Lester. And many more.
Not sure what is more impressive, Billy knowing these songs or the bassist learning them in 10 seconds.
Well, as someone that could learn the bass for these songs in 10 seconds, I'll tell you that learning all those tunes and remembering the words is many times as impressive...
Yes, Bassist is also great👍👌
I was trying to figure out just how to say that
The bass player is a- mazing to say the least, taking direction on the fly.
It's just jazz /s
Just jazz lol
I love how educational he makes this whole experience. Billy’s got an old soul.
Just like Doc used to do
He didn’t learn it all on the inside… it’s finished on the inside.
Mountain folks.
Great tribute to Doc and Merle. My grandfather and Doc was first cousins! I remember hearing Doc play all these songs!
The music is in your jeans.
😂😂
I saw Doc in Canada years ago. You could just feel the love he put into his music. He did Shady Grove by himself. I thought it was because it was too personal. As they were walking off stage, someone near me shoulted, "We Love you, Doc!" and he stopped for a second and seem to look right at the guy and smiled.
Shout out to the bass player learning songs on the fly❤
Pretty badass in itself huh. Impressive 😊
And he’s been with him all these years.
Hell yeah! That’s what I was saying!
This is the first time I heard Billy Strings, what an accomplished musician this guy is. I could listen to this band all night long and not get bored. You sure are blessed Billy Strings.
Welcome to the club!
Something tells me that not only is he blessed but he's spent what we call around here as a "butt-load" of time practicing.
@@leonedimare2341 , his dad is just as good as he is. He said that his dad taught him how to play the old school Bluegrass and then he makes his own music as well. Father taught him well. He is a genius.
It's awesome

I’m so glad that I found this young man and his band, absolutely the most talented group. Beautiful music!
What a group /band of country/bluegrass musicians. WOW, could listen to them repeatedly.
Our newest iconic true All-American musician. A beam of light in darkness. Thank- you for continuing where Doc Watson left off. He's looking down with a big proud smile. Thank you for sharing your gift and making the world a better place!
Amen to that sister❤
GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY THIS BOY CAN PICK!!!!! DOC WOULD BE PROUD!!
Imagine if he picked plugged into the wall of sound !! We would be slappin our overall clad knees for miles haha

I sat 10 feet from Doc Watson as he played at the Suwanee River Folk Festival in 1970. He was my hero.
Tony Rice and Norman Blake kept the torch alive.
But now we got Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings.
We are so lucky.
It's so wonderful to hear Billy pay tribute to Doc.
What was the set like? Was it anything like this set Billy played here?
@@sg66676 Doc's set was with his son, Merle, who passed in 1985 (age 36). Only two guitars. Doc made "back porch/shank of the evening/mellow" music. Billy is "high-energy/showoff music. I like em both. Doc played Tennessee Stud, Little Sadie, Black Mtn Rag, and his classics -- Deep River Blues, Shady Grove, Freight Train Boogie, Sittin' on Top of the World. Honestly -- to me -- Doc's voice was as good as his pickin'. God Bless Billy and Molly for paying tribute to Classic Bluegrass and stretching the boundaries into jam grass, acid grass, you name it.
Here's another picker I forgot to mention -- Leo Kottke. Who will ever surpass his first album?
Doc was my # 1 when I first learned acoustic. Loved him. Saw him live twice. Second time he took a flat picking break and was so enthusiastic he fell over backwards in his chair. Never missed a beat. Finished the song laying back with his legs in the air . Stunning.
Walk on boy. This take should be preserved for historical record. Tip of hat to that mando player too.
We've lost Doc, but gained Billy. Amazing musicians.
Right on, bro. Very good point.
I met Doc through a mutual friend in 1972.

He's also just a great story teller. He honors the past and puts his modern spin in. Amazing performer!
I'm 75 years old, and when I was 16, my grandparents took me downtown Mpls. (on a bus no less) to the Guthrie Theater to see Doc Watson! He was so awesome, and I still have the program from that time. It is a precious memory. He'd be so proud of you Billy!! You're amazing!
Im mid 30's and i enjoyed reading your comment and imagining myself back in that time. It's very cool that you still have the program! Thank you for sharing 🙏

America.....you have something very special in this young man, who pays homage to a bluegrass legend in his heart, fingers, and words. Good to see some of the younger generation keeps the older generation living, along with a vital part of Americas history. God bless you all the way from Australia.
Thanks from Louisiana! Billy is leading a Bluegrass revival. Cheers P[>
Nice to see the appreciation for this music! Grew up in the backwoods of the blue ridge so this music is deeply important to me. Cheers to both of y'all!
You can find a set he did with the incredible Aussie Tommy Emmanuel.
St Kilda, me...yes!
B H,
I’m also from the land of oz,
As of 18 months ago never new much about bluegrass or had ever heard of billy Strings, absolutely amazing musician and my favourite style of music now,
He was a big influence on getting me through the agony of those last 18 months living in communist Victoria Australia.
I even emailed Thompson Guitars to buy the Billy Strings limited guitar , but due to $ exchange rate, way out of my price range.
But he has opened my eyes to all the fantastic Musicians in this genre,
Molly Tuttle also spring to mind.
One day soon I’d love to travel to the states and go to a bluegrass festival featuring all these wonderful muso’s.
Once our f#*ked up NWO government let’s me travel.
God bless to all in the states
Half of my family is from the Appalachian Mountain of Mitchell County, NC. This music just fills my soul, plum full! You fellas are so talented and I Love Every Note! Stunning, Amazing flat picking! Thank You, Billy, Billy, Drew and Royal! You're all, Masters of your instruments! This is the best Bluegrass, since Doc, Lester and Earl. Let us not forget Dear Ole, Wayne Henderson too. ))) THANK YOU ALL,, for this Precious TREASURE and for keeping it Alive ! This brings big tears to my eyes, when I think of our Beloved Doc and Merle.
I grew up in North Carolina and Doc and later, Merle's music was almost always a part of the music playing in our house. Billy...Thank you for honoring his legacy. AMEN.
He is still up ⬆️
Billy is such a "Doc head" lol. He is so wholesome and really just so glad he has introduced me to his legendary inspirations!
This is like gold flowing through my ears unto my soul! My cup filleth up 👊🫀🍻
Your comment is pure poetry. I feel that way.
I love watching how he just falls into the role, and he does it so flawless..
He was clearly born to lead this kind of amazing sound into the future.
Classic, and ever evolving to a more beautiful and modern form.
I simply love listening to people with true passion, playing and singing what they love, as much as I love enjoying listening to it.
This is the definition of passion, and commitment
If!
If I could, I would keep pushing the thumbs up button for this whole performance.
1 to 5 stars for like, agreed a 5
Unbelievable. These days, music companies are clamoring over the Morgan Wallen’s of the world, but this guy goes unnoticed. This is three years old as I’m watching it. I hope success comes to this man in whatever way he wants it.
who is Morgan Wallens? Ive seen Billy Strings live, worth it and can't wait to see him again. Check out him and Marcus King

He won a grammy recently! So he's getting his
Everybody has a start and so did billy......it’s what you learn from it that shapes you
I hadn't realized before what a historian Billy is, and what a natural story teller.
How can you not fall in Love with this wonderful Music?
I can't not
It Really hits the SMILE button!...doesn't it?
I got my first guitar at 15, and I taught myself how to play. I thought I was good, sometimes real good. I hear Billy play 1 song and I'm like---50 years and I'm ready to put down this guitar and just go back to pickin' my nose. Go get 'em Billy!
Think positive. Don't quit.
I played piano for years, then stopped. Can't even read music anymore. I'm 66 now & gonna try the harmonica. What the heck🙏🏼😊
That's funny man. Seen Doc and Billy
66 year old retired rocker here... would occasionally listen and marvel at bluegrass... but THIS my friend commands respect for well rounded talent! WOW... I can listen to this for HOURS ON END!

Ang galing....

She might not be dead
Billy said"I've never really played that song in front of people before " well Billy, you nailed it!
I am not usually the fangirl type but Billy has changed that, I am so in love with his talent, his voice, his passion! I don't care what anyone says 🤷 he is truly the greatest guitarist of all time! 🐐 bmfs 💘 baby! 💘
You could make a lot of really bad choices among the popular performers of today’s world.
It says something about your character in your choice.
I hope Billy has a long brilliant career so when your my age (70’s) you can look back and proudly say “l liked him back in the 20’s”.
He is certainly among the best ever.
He is seriously one of my favorite musicans of all time, I always wonder is he as awesome in person as his presence on stage. He seems so genuine!
Yes I'm sure
What you get is what you see with Billy.
His live show is the best thing I've ever seen!
One of the best sets I've ever listened to... so enjoyable to hear Billy's energy and passion for Doc's style of playing.
Timeless!!!
You bet! Nice to here that Doc isn't forgotten and has young talent respecting his greatness.
I think I saw Doc Watson, once, some 40 years ago. Alas, I was quite enamored, at the time, with the much more popular Bakersfield, Texas, and Outlaw sounds; so, my memory of it is hazy. But, I gotta say, I really enjoy hearing this kid and his band mates play.
@@emiller9426, Billy will be known as the next Doc Watson in his time. He is just starting out, such a young talent.
Good god it’s fricking the best I’ve heard in 65 frickin years!
I noticed throughout this that there seems to be no ones ego interfering. Everyone appears to be an equal participant in every way. Of course this will happen for the bassist later I’m sure Christ he’s learning on the fly here which is amazing. But this seems to be a quality I noticed with doc too. He was always telling this one to pick or that one to go. He never had to be the center of attention 24/7. He recognized that everyone had talent. Some may have been starting their journey but they all had worth to him. This isn’t something you see in rock bands. The lead singer is the prima Donna always. It’s a gracious welcoming that you feel during these collaborations that happen with bluegrass and folk music that just make you feel like your little space in the world is better for having listened to it. I don’t know if I’m making sense 😂
That’s what I like about Bluegrass. There is no spotlight..
Then you didn't notice the two times the mandolin player messed up
It's very special with Mosat (sp) learning on the fly. I'm fortunate that I have been onto these guys for several years and have traveled the country to be there. Much love.
@@glennblevins damn you're such a pro brah
Doc was all about the music! Humble man! He did wind up standing out but not because he tried......it just came natural.
Billy and the band are something else . His understanding of the history of flat pickin guitar is impressive.Billys dad taught him well . Run with it son .
I think that he actually knew Doc Watson. He sounds just like him in every way.
This version of “Southbound” is incredible!
If Doc Watson heard this... his chest would swell with pride and he would have that great smile that went from ear to ear.....
Wood_Strings_Voice_Music Doc would grab a guitar and join in!
He's conducting from just beyond the veil. That's why Billy has his eyes closed.
Doc already knew. Like, he didn't know the future...But he knew that the songs were going to live on. And he is delighted to see and hear this particular performance.
This young man is great! Doc would be proud to know he influenced him. Great picking by all the members of the band.
Billy was such a hit at Wintergrass. It's been a delight watching him grow from being masterful to becoming a master at such a young age.
Doc Watson has been my favorite guitarist since I first heard of him. Glad to see Billy doing this. Pay close attention to Docs blues playing with his son and then his grandson, that's the best of Doc.
I got to hand it to Billy Strings for telling us these stories and the history of Ole Doc and especially for playing his music, may Doc rest in peace. I don't know if these two ever got together, ever met, I'm sure Doc would've wanted to and would've toured with Billy. Imagine that?
It's great to hear youngsters like Billy Strings carry the torch of this priceless AMERICAN music that should never be forgotten!
This music should "NEVER" be forgotten. Hillbilly music kinda grew on me' When I heard it on the movie Bonnie - n - Clyde, when I was a little punk kid. (Foggy Mountain Breakdown) is probably my favorite.
Bluegrass is amazing cultural music, it’s a shame Hollywood movies have portrayed this music in such a negative way. I’m 32 and I’ve cut Hollywood from my American life for good for many reasons.

This will be a treasure in time, a jewel for the ages! RESECT Billy for actually caring to learn what mountain music is about. Most people don't understand us folks of East Tennessee. Mountain music is real life about real people.
Already IS, to those who have an Ear to Hear.

WOW, how many changes in one song can you get, this guy can pick a guitar.
Listened as a kid, loved the blues & country then. 50+ years later love it still esp. with a "kid" (to me) playing & singing the way he does. No walking around like a chicken...picken, grinnin & great renditions. Great band members too...finest caliber! Hopefully he'll be doing it 50 years from now.
Billy Strings is without doubt the greatest hero i've come across in the last 10 years.
Doc Watson would be so proud of these guys. As I am. Love it.
Mind blowing! Billy sounds and picks like a young Doc. We are blessed to have him.
This young guy, has more raw talent his finger than most musicians ...Would’ve accumulated in Lifetime !!
I have been listening to Billy and the boys since the middle of the pandemic when I tripped over billy, dust in a baggie, on CZcams. Hook on him worse than I ever was on meth. I would play these longer concerts and be there stuck to the TV. Watching the videos. Couldn't just listen. Had to watch. I went on the Billy quest.. I think the first one I heard was in the tacky house with the gut in the t-shirt and flip flops.. wow what a baby he was. I proceeded to listen to all of it. Lost a man that didn't get it. Course he didn't get much. Good riddance. Thanks Billy. I had a daughter that would be your age, y'all were two weeks and a million years apart. She passed away at the very beginning of the pandemic... Dec.8th 2019. At twenty seven, I was devastated to say the least. I am still. Will always be pissed that my kid had the ADUCITY TO BEAT me the heaven. I always will be.
And just like Doc you have an amazing talent for the story like he did. You are carrying the torch man!!!
Zen guitar. Completely unconscious when he gets going. What a way to make a living for sure.
You cannot play this fast if you have to think consciously about it. He put in a lot of hours in the woodshed to get there.
Channeling his thoughts to his fingers, like few before him.
Reminds me of BB King in that after his concert was over you were convinced that no one in the whole place had a better time than he did!
I was thinking of BB when I made that comment, Jeff. 🍻
TheOGMikeyP he was not 20 feet from me when I heard him say that he would play music for free if he had to and he would be doing it until the day he died!
These guys amaze me . True musicians. Thank you lord
Crazy where he's been in 5 years!❤

Amazing - Royal Massat auditioning right there.
I am so grateful for the music these 4 play - I need it - thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!
Had the pleasure of doing sound for Doc and Merle at local college gigs around his home in NC. He was a true gentleman full of surprises. I once flew to a last minute gig with him in his 4 seat plane. Once airborne he took the controls. He was also known to play Frisbee from time to time; that's how tuned to the elements he was. A true gentleman who never cared for the spotlight just the music and support for anyone who wanted to join in. Billy does him proud he would say.
Yes! You can tell Billy loves and lives the music. Doc left such a legacy of music and these guys do it justice!
Did you know Billy used to play guitar in death metal bands? It’s one of the reasons he can play so well. Death metal is extremely technical and hard to play.
@@johnwalter564 I did not know that AND it might explain all the tatoos and pierced ear lobes. My favorite set of Billy's I've seen yet. Doc and Billy are my bluegrass heroes.
