Having just hit a half mil subs I can attest to the fact that subs literally don't matter at all after you get monetized. It's views and audience retention and that's it. The algarithim is very much a "What have you done for me lately" girlfriend so don't grind out low quality content just to make another video. Keep it top shelf or don't make it at all.

Very much disagree. The algorithm is a nightmare... I used to not blame the algorithm and my channel completely died. Now I constantly blame the algorithm and change my content for the algorithm only (my audience already liked it before, my audience engagement has always been pretty good). And now I am growing again. The algorithm does a really shitty job with my channel and I'm just looking for ways to work around that... And even though my content hasn't changed all that much, now that I do blame the algorithm and focus on that more, my content is being pushed more and: people love it. People that would never have seen my content if I hadn't been blaming the algorithm.
Only thing I can't work around is the algorithm shadow banning any content that gets automatically flagged for containing minors. That's a known bug in the algorithm that people have been complaining about for at least FOUR years now... But youtube still denies it... So also blame the algorithm for that.

The elephant in the room is that yes, these videos don’t get views right away… and then suddenly they have a HUGE viral moment…. But despite people clearly engaging with the video… after a short period that video dies. YT stops showing it to people. Very odd stuff
People lose interest
As someone who's currently working on making some changes on my channel, this extremely encouraging. And absolutely true. The algorithm boils down to CZcams finding the right content for viewers. Which means a creators focus should be on making things that people have an interest in. Giving CZcams a better opportunity to serve your content.
That's what the algorithm SHOULD be doing. But it hasn't been doing that anymore for around 2 years now.... the algorithm does no longer serve the viewers what they want to watch. It just pushes the big channels, plus a lot of seemingly random stuff. So everything in this video is nonsense and massively outdated to the current small channels. If you want to grow on youtube today, you should be blaming the algorithm and continuously find ways to work around it, which will not always work... (For instance, last month, the algorithm decided not to show content from many small channels even to their own subscribers, including skipping the notifications to people who have notifications on for the channel. This happens quite frequently, last month it was very bad. So if you just create content people have an interest in without also focusing on the algorithm, you risk no-one even ever seeing the content....
I used to say what you say here and my channel completely died. When I stopped listening to Vidiq in regards to the algorithm and started blaming the algorithm, I also started growing again. All my content is now focused on the algorithm first, people second. Unfortunately....

Guys take your time and be consistent whether your views are up or down consistency is key. I’ve noticed myself a drop in views recently for long form videos but an increase on shorts ironically. I feel that CZcams constantly switches the algorithm, the CTR is higher on my long form videos but gets pushed less but my CTR is lower on my shorts but gets pushed more. My theory is CZcams increases the viewership for the form of content they want to popular on their platform.

Great video as always. I’m curious about reaction channels. Is the approach to grow a reaction channel different than other creators?
I have been a great follower of the channel for a long time and thanks to many of your teachings I have managed to grow my channel to almost 40k subscribers. But during the last year and a half the channel had a decline, and although I experimented with many things at the end of the day I only noticed that videos with a good CTR and retention only receive a minimum amount of impressions until suddenly these are reduced to almost 0. It usually happens often and there are very few videos that continue to be driven by the algorithm beyond their initial output. It's strange and no matter how much I try strategies to attract more attention from my audience on CZcams, it still doesn't give them many impressions. I still don't understand why it happens or why it decides to cut the spread of a video so quickly. I would like to know if anyone else has this same problem. Great content, greetings from Argentina.
My videos do something quite similar. It always gives me a huge start, and then it always dies within the second day.
I'm a smaller channel, but I also have this problem. I've been consistently improving retention, CTR, and my intro retention is much better than my old averages. But the views remain mostly the same.
This is how the algorithm is today: a disaster to viewer, creators and probably also to youtube... Vidiq still doesn't realise how much the algorithm has changed in the last 1-2 years. Today CTR and AVD hardly matter to the algorithm anymore, sometimes it even seems to be the other way around: high CTR and AVD resulting in fewer impressions and possibly even a flatline.
What you should be doing is blame the algorithm and ignore what Vidiq says on the matter...
Look for videos that did get impressions and try to discover what mystery was in there the algorithm somehow liked... For me my main focus fir creating videos is the algorithm, not people. I wish that wasn't necessary, but it's the only way to still get some views these days.
@@MasterrEli same. That's because the algorithm is a disaster. Keep improving, but also keep focusing on the algorithm, meaning you should ignore pretty much everything in this Vidiq video...
I noticed for my small channel shorts, it seems each shot is given a fixed showing window in feeds (12 hours or 24h etc), within this window, if a short gets one subscriber, it will get additional hours in feeds, if get more subscribers, it gets more show time. Getting more likes seems not to have the same impact as getting more subscribers (observation from my channel). After fixed hours, the window is closed, but the view for some shorts can continuously grow by viewer searching.

I definitely have a limited appeal in one of my videos but it's slowly changing now.
I don't really add tags anymore too maybe that also helped who knows.

Being a CZcamsr is pretty much like the best job ever. It's like running business, and you just need to offer your viewers what they need or want. Starting channel can be tough, but now there is lots of tools (my favorite one is using a little bit of Famester) which could help massively to take off your channel and pretty much you won't ever need to worry about algorithms again.
Without worrying about the algorithm (and not blaming it) is a near 100% guarantee your channel will never grow though. The algorithm today is a disaster to viewer, youtube and creators... If you ignore that fact (like Vidiq keeps doing) small channels will remain small.
Great vid as always, my channel grows from 1K to 91K subs in less than a year... Based from my experience, the algorithm is very simple. When you make a shorts, the algorithm reads it, then after a while, the algorithm will starts to push your shorts. If you have been in CZcams for a while, the algorithm knows exactly the pattern about your videos. Idk how to explain this but yeah, that's my experience from making content this year

I would just like to say to those who are just starting out that it is possible to get monetised on CZcams.
After nearly one year of grinding away it has finally happened to me. In the beginning I never thought I would get there.
My first 100 Subscribers took me 3 months to get, whereas just last week it took me only 5 days to get 100. This shows that once you get to your 1,000 Subs things should snowball and grow much quicker than you would expect.
I now have been accepted into the youtube partner program and are only 200 hours away from getting fully monetised and being eligible for ad revenue.
So keep plugging away and doing what you are doing, and once you find what works run with it, because you are sure to create great things. You can do this and good luck 🤞.

If you work to create a quality video, eventually people interested in that content will find it (likely via search), connect with it/ your channel, and become a subscriber. Love the content!
Not really no... if you're a small channel the algorithm won't ever push it and it is unlikely to show up on top of any search results. CZcams used to have amazing searchability and the algorithm used to be great for discovering new content which made it pretty easy to grow a new channel IF you created good quality content people are interested in. But today, great quality content alone will get you nowhere if you don't also explicitly focus on the algorithm, in other words: blame the algorithm.
Am a year and a half into my CZcams journey with 161 subs. I don’t get many views at the moment and keep having a wobble over it.
Am slowly improving, taking time on my thumbnails and watching vids like this reminding me its a marathon not a sprint 👍

As you say, as a new/small creator your videos get traction through Search.
HOWEVER, most of my views(albeit, not much😅) come through suggest and browse.
Is it normal or should I be doing something else to trigger traction through Search?
What you should be doing is ignore everything in this Vidiq video because it's all massively outdated for today's small channels... as a small channel you will never get any traction through search, you're dependent on the algorithm. And these days the algorithm does hate small channels... So blame the algorithm! And find ways to work around a malfunctioning algorithm.... it is possible, but it's a long process, no matter how good your content may be... the days where channels posting great quality content people want to watch would grow automatically are gone.

I have been thinking of the youtube alogrithm incorrectly and probably other youtubers aswell. But, guys take your time, slowly by slowly we can get views, subs, watchtime then monetization! I have a channel for 2 years and over 230 long videos posted. I would like to start posting shorts, even daily, but I think that this will negatively impact my long videos: people addicted to shorts will not click on long videos when they appear in their feed, and if they do , they won't stay on them for long and it will affect the average viewing time.

I think shorts won’t affect your longform views much, but one thing you should be careful about is that shorts can go viral and bring in a lot of subscribers that don’t watch your longform content. As someone who doesn’t really like shorts, I made one super viral short (11M views) and then got excited about the number of subs I got (probably 8.5k). But they don’t watch the content I want to make 😢
So I say if you want to make shorts, make shorts. If you want to make shorts because you think it’ll get you an audience that’ll watch the content you’re making right now, don’t count on it
I own a history channel. I can confirm that from the first day of uploading i have seen an okay amount of impressions but my CTR is kinda low (i've read from some community posts that this is normal for history channels). Also my Retention is about 40%-45% on average. Do you have any recommendations on how can i do better than that? Because i suppose history channels attract older people so i wanna know if there is something different i can do to succeed.

To be honest, Vidiq has more than once nearly pushed me to just giving up... Only when I started paying less attention to what they are saying did I start to grow again and get some motivation back... I'm still here though, because they most definitely do also offer great advice (besides a lot of outdated rubbish) and to help others.

Been giving this video multiple re-watches because information in it is so valuable and life changing.
Having transition on my channel this video is very encouraging when i transition from making a content my views cant make to 3 digits views and im slowly losing it again, but i see this video and i understand how it works need to do more and more.

Ok. Please give me an answer. So I have two videos, both targeting browse views. In the first 24h one video got 10k impressions and the other one 1k impressions. The one with 1k impressions had a higher average view duration and higher ctr. Why? Why a video with better analytics perform worse than a video with worse analytics? Both on the same niche/topic both had views just from browse feature.
Its almost like finding out if a channel will be a one hit wonder or a super star...

I got a viral video after working a lot on how to make videos, and learning the algorithm so I think I have a grasp on how it works. Only thing I'm bad at is consistency, because of lack of motivation, lack of time, and procrastination. Because of that I went from 100k views on a video to... 400, 2 videos later, because I didn't post for 5 months lol.
Yes posting consistently is a very hard job when you are solely the filmer and the editor. I have the same issues with keeping up with content after travel and filming events etc, it’s a hard thing to keep consistent
When I promote a video, the promoted videos, being ads, get very short watch times (almost every viewer clicks off within 30 seconds). Does this therefore damage the video's long-term prospects, even if it nets me about 1 subscriber per 10 views (as seems to be the case). Or, in the long run, do the subscribers cancel out that bad first impression? Or does the algorithm take both into account?
Hi. If you don't mind, i have a question about CPM. As we know, CZcams pays differently to creators from different countries. I am from India but my videos focus on American audience and the majority of the views i get come from the USA. Pardon my ignorance, but when it comes to the payment, what does the CZcams take into consideration - The location of the creator or the location of the audience?

For my most recent short it had a high ‘chose to view’ stat and 177% retention rate, and yet it was shown to fewer people than normal. So I dug through my stats to figure it out, and it turns out I finally had enough channel data for CZcams to tell me when my viewers were online. I learned that on Mondays my viewers log on later in the day than other days. And not as many log on at all on Mondays. My video was doing well with my audience, the problem is that the viewers that CZcams knows will watch my videos just haven’t gone on CZcams yet because I posted at a time that usually does well but isn’t ideal for my Monday posts

Based on your analytics, can you tell what made CZcams to tell when your viewers are online?

@@GeneralDStudios there is a benchmark but I don’t know the exact number. However I believe if you have around 100 returning viewers and 100 subscribers is when it starts getting enough data. For reference I have 160 subs and 114 viewers who rewatch my videos that they have already seen.
I`m having a big problem in this regard, this video would've been very helpful a while back. I started doing timelapse videos of decay, stuff rotting , fruit , meat whatever... for about 1 year. And now I switched my niche to timelapse videos of plants growing, and one of my old videos with minced meat rotting with maggots has blown up, 100k views+ , but I don t really get views on my current videos due to the fact that the niche is different , even if that the big niche is timelapse , viewers are probably expecting the kind of content I did on the video that blew up , something extraordinary, maybe the aesthetic appeal , scientific curiosity of flies laying eggs on meat, maggots forming probably or morbid fascination... :) Anyways I would`ve done a separate channel just for plants if I knew that, I suspected it but just wasn't sure at the time. I`m gonna have to keep posting and hope I get indexed on the new ones... If anyone looks at the channel , a feedback on the latest vids with plants , a real one from a seasoned viewer would be so helpful , critical!
So performance of one video DOES affect what audience another is shown to? Okay that might explain my channel a bit. I have older videos from 5 years ago prior to drilling down into my target niche that are doing good numbers; but I feel like they are affecting my modern videos negatively. My most recent video, which for all intents and purposes has a decent thumbnail, short and accurate and descriptive title, and targets accurate keywords--only has a 1.4% CTR. Usually I average 3% to 5%
The video has a click through rate of only 2.4%. So why are they still getting so many impressions? That’s what I don’t understand. One of my videos, for the last 7 days, has hit a ctr of 28% (5.1% average since published), 100% 👍🏻, 87% retention at 30secs, 70.6% at the end of video (8 minutes long), ‘a top moment’ of 6 mins viewer retention at 72%.
How many impressions did YT give me in those 7 days? 59 !!
For the last 90 days it’s had roughly 8 - 20 a day with a ’high’ of 66.
THAT’S what I don’t understand.
It's because YT give you only 59 impressions you have a CTR of 28%. With many impressions the CTR goes down.
I think it’s because CZcams cares more about engagement as a metric
I want to grow my channel more, it’s hard not to compare yourself to others 🙏🏻

it is super important not to blame the "algorithm" it is doing the best it can with the information it has on tiny channels. keep going, keep creating and enjoy the process. i've seen why one or two of mine have done better than others. and i will create those vids when i feel more comfortable - but currently just trying to build on that confidence, that doesn't come easy. i actually really got on board with this video, some superb points raised and info given.
Facts!
Oh, I blame the algorithm. It does a shitty job on my channel and many other channels... It's a constant battle against the algorithm, while I would love to just focus on my audience... But I can't. If I do that my channel would just die, or in fact: it did.... Only when I started focusing more on the algorithm did my channel start to grow again. I make content for the algorithm first, people second... And it sortof works. That is, until the algorithm screws up again. For instance by near shadow banning my content because some minor-protection-algorithm detected minors in my video. That is a known bug in the algorithm... Or better put: every youtuber that makes content involving minors knows about this bug, youtube still denies it, even though it has been there for at least FOUR years now...
I also blame the algorithm for taking an astonishing 6 months to discover that middle aged guys into Formula 1 crashes and GTA V do not want to see teenage girls dancing... But somehow it kept pushing my content to that target audience, obviously resulting in clickrates and AVD immediately crashing. I blame the algorithm for sometimes deciding to push my content like crazy at 2-3 AM... Content that's mainly focused on local kids and young adults... (they're sleeping at that time, obviously! So immediate crash of that video).
I blame the algorithm for pushing content that was (in hindsight) quite bad and the analytics showed it from the start while not pushing content with great analytics and amazing audience engagement.
Sure I made my fair share of mistakes on my youtube journey, no doubt about it! And I keep improving, all the time. But being as small as I still am after over 300 videos? I do mostly blame the algorithm for that by just constantly screwing things up.
Reached 2,000 subscribers today. Very happy with it. Just need to focus on more watch hours now. Thanks for the great videos

On my channel, the videos have very little views for the first couple of hours, then they shoot up but max out pretty soon ... that's weird
I feel like this bits of information that I already knew, but never really put them all together. This is a revelation to me.
Im currently trying to make a channel with football edits and clips but im having trouble getting high views, what should I do
I’ve only been a ‘creator’ for a few months but I’m already figuring out that community is one of the biggest and most important things to have. Having watched various videos from here and other channels. My goal is to build a community through my channel that love my content. Thus my videos being watched by them will be pushed out to more people of similar interests. 14 subscribers and counting 🤩💪🏾 Good luck to all on their CZcams journey.

My main problem is with shorts. Like one of my shorts will get like 3k views. But then boom: next one won't even get like 10 views.
Thanks for all the wisdom! I have about 51k subs and mainly have firearm related content. My son and I want to try gaming videos do you think that would hurt my channel?
I would suggest creating other channel or try to make a connection between games and firearm you have on your channel.
Might be a good way to expand your audience if you do that correctly. Big risk though.

I have a question, how long does it take for CZcams to recommend a video because I started a new channel and its been two days and only 1 view and 2 impressions.
So many creators don't understand the algorithm, as it can be difficult to work out at the best of times! Imo, content like this is a must watch for any creator that wants the best chance to get more views on their channel. - Jass.
This is 100% true and it just happened to me. I'm a small channel and had two videos that didn't do much for the first few days, but then both took off suddenly.
I have multiple videos that started with a few thousand views, then launched weeks later.
To everybody, look at other channels which has many views, don’t copy them directly but copy them to be better.
I started my channel in September 2023 and I have received 322 subs until now, many of them came after I made little changes to my channel visual aspects.
Remember:
Don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t, instead let everyone know what you can. 😎
Be yourself.

You mentioned about positive comments - do positive comments, as opposed to neutral or negative comments do anything for the algorhythm? Is the metadata from the comments themselves influential at all?

After over a year my small channel has never had more than 300 views on any of my content. After looking at several small channels that have videos similar to mine, I know many of mine are on par with theirs yet have yet to get more than 50 subscribers.
I started a shorts channel and after 4 days i have 130 subscribers and couple videos with +2k views and over 120% view duration. Out of no where none of my videos were getting any views even new ones posted. I used free copyrighted music and the content was my own… does that mean im shadow ban? I didn’t do anything wrong

Thx for the great video!!Sometimes I really struggle to comprehend how the yt algorithm works..😅 I have videos with great stats that barely get any views and flatline... and than I have the really bad ones with a 3.5 ctr, max 30% retention that suddenly go "viral" (in comparison to my other videos) days, weeks or even months after posting without me doing anything??😅😂😂 can someone explain?
