    Tori I'm getting deja Vu! Whenever you talk about your supplies that you love you always say you don't want to use them because it'd be indulgent or you're saving them, I think since you want to focus on your skills: you already know what tools you enjoy that work for you, so just use those! No hard feelings on our end if you've grown out of the supply exploratory focus that you were in for so long

    I'm actually glad you're not going to do a ton of reviews on your new channel- it's great to try new things when they come out, but there are SO MANY paint/etc. reviews already out there. I'd rather watch you paint and hear about why you use a certain color for shadows, or how to capture skin tones, that kind of thing. I think you're a natural teacher and would love to learn more about how you capture a likeness, or mix colors or explore new techniques. I loved the finished portrait and would have much rather listened to you describe that- just beautiful!!!

    Canson XL works well enough for certain painting styles, it does a phenomenal job for what it’s made of and what it costs. It’s like therapy in a way: on a budget, you get what you pay for, but you also get out exactly what you put in.

    • @jendubay3782

      Sp.Ace.Child what kind of styles?

    • @didi7074
      @didi7074 Před 4 lety +11

      @@jendubay3782 Styles where you only use 2/3 layers and not a lot of water. For someone like me and Tori who keeps adding layes and layers this paper doesn't handle well. The layers lift easily, the colors start getting muddy, the paper starts getting destroyed resulting in an ugly texture, it doesn't hold well a lot of water for super loose paintings...I know it's the paper doing this because I've tried different brands of watercolors (including Schmincke and W&N cotman) and the results were always the same. Tried different types of brushes and still the same. Used those same art supplies in a different but still cheap paper: only after 5/6 layers it started to buckle (forgot to tape it) and the paper started getting destroyed. So, yeah, Canson XL watercolor paper is not for my current painting style.

    • @callistoval
      @callistoval Před 4 lety +2

      I say that Canson XL is only for beginners who want an affordable watercolor paper, it's literally 5 dollars per pad with 20 sheets in it. When you finally get into watercolor, you might start to get better paper.

    Not that anyone should use bad paper but a tip Billy Showell taught me for hot press paper was to use a really polished smooth gemstone and put a bit of kitchen roll on your watercolour and rub in gentle circles over the top with the stone. This smooths down the paper fibres and allows you to add more layers without fuzzing and bleeding on the paper so much. I mean when you’ve already painted many layers not at the start

    Seeing her painting that ended as a "fail painting" was surprisingly motivating. It's just that I rarely see "professionals" show their messed up paintings. Seeing Victoria also struggle with paints reactivating and paints smudging into each other was weirdly helpful for me, because seeing her step away from her painting and putting it down just kinda reminded me that it's okay for me to step away from my own paintings and maybe not enjoy the outcome. Victoria has honestly been one of my #1 motivators to get into watercolor. Just seeing it mess up and seeing Victoria put down the painting and step away was really refreshing because it reminded me that professionals still make "mistakes" that beginners heavily struggle with, too. I don't know if my comment makes 100% sense, but I just thought I'd chime in with my own little observation.

    an inexpensive but artist grade watercolor you should try would be the white nights watercolor. But I would recommend buying them open stock rather than getting their palette sets. You would be able to pick individual colors that would all be lightfast and transparent, you can buy them open stock from places like jackson's art, saa.co.uk, or even from a couple ebay sellers.

  • @alisawalsh2503
    @alisawalsh2503 Před 4 lety

    I completely agree with you about the cellulose papers. I recently went through my paper stash to see what I owned and found all of my old mixed media paper and student grade paper. Not wanting to waste perfectly good paper, I decided I would complete some watercolor and gouache paintings for some friends and family since that paper size was fairly small. However, since I switched over to 100% cotton watercolor paper about three years ago, I kinda forgot how the pulp papers acted and was thrown off at how I couldn't layer much if at all and the impending muddiness. After fighting my way through about 10 paintings I decided I needed to switch to using colored pencil because I was so frustrated with how muddy my colors were becoming.
    So, yeah, good quality cotton paper is so important for watercolor paintings! It makes the process so much easier and relaxing because there is really no limit to how much you can layer.

    Don't feel bad Tori! I'm not a specialist I'm still using a lot of student grade supplies and I like them they usually work for me and effects I like to achieve. But this paper... Oh my God it was holding me back. For so many moths I was trying to figure out why I have so much hard time painting. I had no joy. And I was raised with this set of mind that good artist can make to work anything. Sorry for my language but it's bullshit! I changed paper for one of better quality and everything started to be so easy! I hope you're feeling well! Sending you lots of love!

  • @ShamelesslyCreative

    Oddly I started at high end paints Schmincke, Mgraham, Daniel Smith when I got back into watercolors and now just for research and understanding, I am trying lower quality paints and artist handmade paints looking to see if there is anything else I could love or that would be fun for practice or in my sketchbook as well to find sets that perform at a lower cost! I so agree with the things you said. I think there is a place for all kinds of paints in a persons collection, there are sets that are not great in lightfastness or pigment that are just fun to use in a journal or dayplanner or for fun artwork ( some handmade paints are too opaque that I dont use them in artwork or metallic paints) and then there is the paint that is better if you want to improve your watercolor skills and have artwork that lasts or you can sell. I always believe in keeping only what you love and gifting the rest. I personally think quality paper is the first thing people should buy then worry about better paints But also agree with you If I had to choose I would buy high quality cotton paper and a set of primaries in Daniel Smith or M.Graham because that is all a person really needs and grow from there! But would rather see someone use cotman paints on cotton paper than cotman on pulp paper!

    you being upfront helps me with my own picks for myself. im not on your skill level yet, i would say im. copic era tori / beginning watercolor. yet getting to learn from someone who is more experience helps me with understanding how things work over many brands whether its cheap or not, and gives me more insight into a large vastness of supplies (if that makes sense!) but the disclaimers you put “this doesnt work for me but it could work for you” means a lot even as you say it many times. along with your attitude with cheering beginner artists on and giving many alternatives whether its a bit more expensive for “professional”. i always lean back tp your vids on reviews because your honesty and ability to explain what i said above. love you tori!

    It’s so funny, Canson XL was the paper I learned to use watercolors on. I would strictly only use Canson XL for my paintings. I didn’t discover “good paper” until a local art supply store offered to give me samples to try and I received samples of Fabriano Artistico paper. That’s when I realized that investing in good paper is better than watercolors when starting out. I use Winsor and Newton Cotman with some M. Graham and Daniel Smith tossed in (only because they were gifts), but I use Arches mostly now. HUGE DIFFERENCE! I do still buy Canson XL for my handmade sketchbooks and for quick paintings :) it was fun to watch you use a paper others would turn their noses up to.

    It's definitely one of those tough things - you don't want to dis cheap supplies because they get people started, and some can be pretty great. But at the same time you don't want to mislead people. I think you do a great job being honest and upfront about your experience with them, and then people can draw their own conclusions. I prefer if you are more cutthroat and tell it like it is! Don't feel bad.

Don't get caught up in the guilt or anything! Your videos also do review what products are expensive but Worth the money because of how well they perform. It's a tradeoff and sort of makes "you get what you pay for" ring true, but it really depends when that holy grail product just comes through for someone's specific style or method 💛

    Oh Tori! I'm so sorry you struggled, def. No hard feelings! Silver lining tho, it really helped me personally because I thought I just wasn't using my materials correctly. I struggle so much with lower brand watercolor paper because it really doesn't allow you to push yourself (like you said!!) And I know that it is the paper and not entirely me lol.
    I totally agree to go for the higher prices items IF you really are into the medium tho. Art is soooo expensive sometimes lol, but going for that cheap cheap 🐣 just learn the medium is the best way to find out if you really love it.
    I've started off with Artist Loft gouache (like $7 tube set after tax) and have been buying that and watercolors since just to practice and find my style y'know? So I don't think anyone should feel poopie about using cheap supplies. My favorite so far is Masters Touch watercolor 24 pan set, it was $11 after tax, is a bit chalky on reactivation but it performs beautifully for messing around..
    One question tho, I use A LOT of white lol. What would be the best brand (not too expensive but not Uber cheap either) to get a big tube of just white? I've gone through pretty much all the cheap brands haha 😅

    I heard lots of great stuff about the X-L Mixed Media pads. I scored a partially used pad at a thrift shop. My attempt to use it for w/c was a total failure. I hated the hard surface of the paper. Everything dried streaky and dull, plus the paper degraded from wet on wet applications. I definitely would not recommend it for watercolor. I didn't like it for colored pencils either. X-L probably works well for acrylic and markers - media I don't use. I re-donated the pad just to get it out of my life. I agree with you about finding supplies you enjoy using.

    yep, agree completely, people should buy the best they can afford art supply wise and I am always telling people don't buy sets of coloured pencils, you will have colours you will probably never use. better to spend that money on open stock pencils that are the best quality and easy to source that you can find/afford. applies to most art supplies and I wish people didn't that they need the most expensive supplies to be an artist, supplies are only part of it. :) on the other side of the coin, def learn to admit when a supply is just causing more stress then its worth :)

      This is a brand from Ukraine, the beginning of release from 2018, at a cost equal to White Nights. They recently started releasing student watercolor, but I don’t know if it appeared in online stores, so I’ll give a link to their website rosagroup.com.ua/index.php?id_category=28&controller=category&id_lang=1

    The expensive tubes of watercolour last so much LONGER, though. Mini tubes last for years and I paint a lot, a lot.
    I liked the canson XL sketchbook, but when I bought that same paper on a roll, it was just awful. I don't know why it would be different but it was. I liked how colours could lift because it meant I could fix mistakes. I made the "mistake" of buying some samples of expensive papers on clearance, (lightweight Arches, and blue Bockingford, I haven't tried the Artistico yet) and now my previous papers are so unsatisfying! I like how the cotton stuff sucks up the colour, instead of letting it evaporate out of existence. I guess that means the paints will last even longer?

    On a sort of unrelated note, have you considered some kind of rubberized or slip-grip silicone or some similar material for the back of the board you used in this video? 🤩 it seemed kind of smooth against the desk, and it's nothing near as secure as clips or a track to put the board on but the point of the board is portability, it's cool so far - just maybe hot gluing or super gluing something grippy to the back could be helpful in a subtle way 😯

    In Central Europe that might have been Roman Szmal Aquarius watercolor. Variety of over 140 colours, mostly with ONE pigment in it, while paints with few more pigments are making that look where pigments are setteling apart.
    These are professional watercolors and as a person that is still learning I can tell you one thing: If you're a person that is JUST beggining with watecolours, buy student grade. Don't seek for other because you're going to basically waste perfect paints. Why? Because if you're lreaning, you'll have to make mistakes and make plenty of sudies of nature, people and others and trust me, it's better to learn the medium on cheaper.
    My fav is currently Winstor and Newton. Also there's paints Ladoga, wich are student version od White Nights, in Europe these with Aquarius are quite cheap and nice.
    Aquarius right now are only in pans, but I was asking factory if there's going to be paints in tubes and they are willing to make them so! I'm so excited. Also other flaw is that Aquarius is not having oryginal metal tin case, wich I bought from White Nights. And it fits PERFECTLY with no gap anywhere 32 full pans of Aquarius. But the colours! 200% WORTH! There are even dedicated bright flesh tones. Black-like colurs are in variety of greens, blues, reds, violets (my fav paint rn). Price of the paint is related to expensivness of certain pigment, so it's from $2 to $3,5 by pan (more-less). I thing shipping ti the USA is possible, but I think if anyone would like to buy is, should mail some polish paint shop (you can't but them straight from Roman Szmal shop). These paints are 1,5 year on the market and I see that more and moare artists are falling in love with them.

    im unsure about the rest of europe, but in sweden, you can get full pans of white nights watercolors for the same price as a half pan of cotman, and they are SO. MUCH. MORE. i wager they are easier to get in europe than in the us, at any rate. i know there are mixed opinions on white nights around watercolor youtube, but i love them. i have a primary set of schmincke (vanadium yellow, ruby, delft blue) but i find myself scared to use them - i dont have that problem with white nights, but they give me much nicer results than my student grade paints. so that is what i personally would recommend for someone like me whos kind of intermediate? a little painting experience but really not a lot? just enough to know when paints are working against me haha.
    all that being said, i love art videos that are about the drawing, the ideas, the technique - rather than the supplies. so much of youtube is about making you buy stuff. basically i agree with what you said and im excited to see you level up, using supplies that enable you to do that! thanks for sharing all this with us! :D

    It's better to get fewer, higher quality paints because it almost forces you to understand color theory for mixing colors or value, contrast, and form if you're limited to one color of a tube you want to try.

    I dont remember if you already talked about this in one of your video's, but what do you think of buying the primaries in artist grade vs buying a full 12 color student grade set for the same price?
    I've been advising friends who want to start with watercolor to buy the primaries artist grade first, learning how to mix properly and then buy extra colors if needed (or desired) as you go.
    For reference a 12 color set of van gogh is about the same price as 3 tubes of either schmincke, sennelier or W&N here (not a personal favorite of W&N but I know many people like it)

    OMG yes, Tori! No more cheap art supplies for youuuu! Absolutely agree with everything you've said. Canson XL paper makes me want to pull my hair out. I know other people who love it and it works for them, and that's fine but it just doesn't work for me and the way I paint. I remember trying to paint a dramatic sky with dark clouds in multiple laters and it just came out looking like a mess. BUT it wasn't because I was doing something wrong, it was because of the paper.
    Friends, if you want smooth washes and time to blend and manipulate the paint before it dries, use 100% cotton paper. When it comes to watercolor, the quality of the paper makes a WORLD of difference. If you are gonna skimp on art supplies, don't cut corners when it comes to paper. As Tori says, you will have a much better experience with fewer higher quality materials rather than dumping your money into having ALL the colors (trust me I know this is tempting! but it's better to build your colors slowly over time so you get to know each one and what you can mix with them). Watercolor is meant for mixing. You don't need a 60 tube set. You can mix a wide range of colors from a few well-chosen basic pigments.
    Sorry for the rant but I feel really strongly about this lol.

    everyone should use what they work well with. if you enjoy professional supplies then use them there should be no obligation to use things if you dont want to. i will admit the common advice of "just buy a few professional supplies" never made sense to me. lmao. just personally. yeah id USE them but i dont really care about getting better because theres no obligation to constantly become the better version of yourself in perpetuity. i just do things if theyre fun. (and i will admit i do like the texture some "chalky" paints can have. its cool being able to physically feel my artwork lmao.) if you want to strive for quality materials. especially those in the commercial profession. thats respectable. if you wanna be a nasty art gremlin like me thats also cool lmao.

    I find this paper struggles with more than 2/3 layers and with a lot of water. It buckles a lot, the colors lift super easily, the paper gets destroyed easily, even if you don't use eraser, after multiple layers everything gets muddy and with an ugly texture, making it impossible to keep adding color. I tried different techniques, paints (including Schmincke and W&N Cotman) different types of brushes and the results were always the same. Tried other papers and got better results, was more pleasing to wrork with

    I totally understand wanting to go cheap but good. Last summer my family visited my grandmother for a week. Some how my paint bag didnt get packed. I got stuck buying watercolor paint and paper at Walmart. I bought a tube set thinking they would be better than my kids elem paint. Fast forward to yesterday.. I found the set and not wanting to waste paint, I used them. 😖 The paint was horrible. It just sat on the paper! No movements at all unless by me. It also streaked like crazy. Only drowning it in water evened it a little. It was like using oil paint as watercolor! I even checked the tubes again to make sure it said watercolor! The kids crayola or prang would have been master 100% better.
    Moral of the story: Cheap is better for your wallet. Quality is better for your mental health 😄. Go for a middle ground when you have to. Go back to basics when you are stuck an hour away and in another state from an art store.. practice drawing.
