  • This is a full review on Soloshot 3 Optic 25 & Optic 65. It’s one of the best robotic cameras and tracking systems in the world. There is one caveat, when it works - it’s great, when it doesn’t, it sucks. It allows you to film your surf sessions that can also be used for other action sports. I will be sharing my full experience with both cameras and comparing the video quality between 1080p and 4K @ 30 FPS.
    Soloshot is an awesome tool to improve surfing. It took me quite some time to get used to it and now I kind of figured out how to resolve most technical issues and not get stressed about it.
    Enjoy this episode and find out if it’s worth it to buy it?

    Note to new owners:
    If you end up getting a used one from Facebook Market or eBay, I suggest having the owner provide you with the credentials from his soloshot account. That way, you can sign in and change the registered email address to yours which will be necessary for pairing new tags and updating the software. You won’t be able to change the registered name on the Soloshot itself. It needs to be sent out to Soloshot for a factory reset.

    I personally prefer to use Soloshot 3 Optic 25 over Optic 65 for many reasons.
    Optic25 is more responsive for tracking when the object starts moving fast, and doesn't shake badly during high winds. I’ve been having a better calibration & tracking success with Optic 25 over 3 years of heavy use.
    The only times I use Soloshot 3 Optic 65 is when I travel to some surf spots where the lineup is further than 600 ft away or when Optic 25 is not fully charged.
    The battery on both Soloshot 3 cameras lasts 2-2.5 hours and it jumps up to 3.5-4 hours if you connect it to a power bank. The battery on the tag lasts for 3.5-4 hours. Only the base charges the tag.
    The full setup takes up to 4 minutes and it mostly depends on the GPS signal which tag needs to find automatically in the area (~1 min 10 sec). Once the tag finds the GPS signal, you can start the calibration which can add another 1 min 30 sec.
    The calibration may fail due to poor GPS signal or local magnetic interference.
    If you run into this issue then you can try to move the full setup 20-30 feet away and see if it changes anything.

    Great review my friend ! but there are a couple things you could do on your set up to get a better lock on your tracking. If you set up the tag 15 to 20 feet away from the base and turn it on and let it warm up. Then dock the tag and calibrate. Once it’s done calibrating it should point back to where you turned it on... 20 feet away from the base. If it points back to the same location you have a excellent track.

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Před 2 lety +1

      No, it won’t help. It’s about the long lens, the wind kicks it and it creates this shaking pattern. You will be fin up to 10 mph wind, at 15
      Mph it will start shaking a bit. You can stabilize it in the app like Premiere or Capcut on the phone.

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Před 2 lety

      Yes, there is a button on the tag to stop and start recording. It drains your battery on the Soloshot faster and it’s only convenient in the summer when you’re not wearing gloves😁

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Před 11 měsíci

      You can control from the tag to stop/start recording but it’s not a good practice. I noticed the Soloshot will start acting up and it also drains the battery quicker.

    @twinfin8867 Před 2 lety +1

    Question: Have you tried the 1080p 60 fps or 720p 120 fps? I know it takes up more memory. But the battery would probably go before the 128MB's. Would love to see differences from 30fps.
    This is one of the better videos about this camera that Ive seen to date with good tips. I like your idea of the tag placed under the suit. Ive heard of the Ocean claiming a few.

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Před 2 lety

      Hey Twinfin! Thank you for your feedback! Much appreciated! I’ve tried it at 60fps. There is not much difference in terms of quality unless you want to slow it down to make some clips. It eats up so much memory though. Yeah, keeping the tag under the suit will also help to last it longer. I think they are not waterproof and die after an extensive use if you keep it outside from the salt water. My buddy’s tag just died recently. He was wearing the armband for surfing.

    Hi I bought a used one on ebay. tried it today. the camera tracked, but didn't record. Am I supposed to hit the record button? Every video I've watched on this, no one is hitting record. They have it calibrate, walk back and forth to make sure it's correct, then paddle out.
    Also, being that it's used, should i do a factory re-set? Or that's not that important. Thanks

    • @SkipperSurfReview
      @SkipperSurfReview  Před rokem

      Hey! It’s not important to do factory reset. Try to format SD card in the settings. It start’s automatically recording after you undock the tag. Try to calibrate with the docked tag, undock and then see if it’s recording. It usually shows that pn the screen with the red dot.

    VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! We had issues with the camera not tracking properly. It filmed the ground, 30 yards to the right of the device, loses GPS constantly, just to name a few issues. We reached out for help and they took forever to respond. We ended up purchasing another camera system and sending this one back. Even getting the return information back from them has been a super hassle! We were finally told that Soloshot received the items and it could take up to 30 days to refund. It has now been over 60 days since they've told us they've received the product back. No refund, and no response. I caution anyone from buying this camera.
