- Dobermans are known to have a few serious genetic health issues. Lately, Dilated cardiomyopathy (or DCM) has Doberman owners scared, and for good reason. This is a serious health problem in Dobermans that can cause your dog to die unexpectedly and suddenly, even at a very young age. In this video, I'll cover what DCM is, the symptoms, life expectancy after diagnosis, available genetic testing, what you can do about it, and much more. I also go over the latest FDA investigation into dietary-linked DCM in dogs and what it means for Doberman owners.

Tonight my 110lb Dobie was diagnosed with DCM. I can’t stop crying. He’s the best and sweetest dog. I wish I knew about this disease earlier, but you’re right, it doesn’t appear until it’s in the later stages. His breathing is rapid and I can tell his heart is working so hard. He’ll only be 8 yrs old in July 2021. I can’t believe this is happening to him. I’m doing everything I can to save him.
Sad !!! I understand that's heartbreaking
Well my just was diagnosed today ..I'm so fucking sad for him
@@bpocol6033 my dog was just diagnosed yesterday its really heart breaking. How is your dog doing?
@@tarik6507 is ok but now he's taking a bunch of meds ...n doctor say he will need the harness..like that they can see how much damage n how heart is biting for 24hours...don't know what will hapend next ..but I will keep it posted
Im sorry for ur dog 😥
We had doberman 11,5 years, my best my everything, best friend 4ever,they are the best dogs, they have so much love in their hearts, he get wobler sindrom and it was to hard for operation, anyway he had more than 11 years quality life. If we ever get over him, we are gonna look for one, R.I.P. Sheik.
So sorry to hear that! Sounds like he had a long good life thanks to you. Prayers for Sheik!
Thank you for this - my girl Helvi died at 7 from DCM - sudden cardiac death 10 months after it was diagnosed. At least I was blessed enough that I was with her , and that she died playing at the park. However it was emotional terrorism for that 10 months wondering every day if it would be her last. I would strongly encourage people if they can to contribute to the Doberman Diversity Project by having their dogs DNA tested through them. They are a non profit aiming to help improve longevity in the breed.
Thank you again for this video John
My 17mo girl will be echo’ed and holtered from about 3yo. She’s positive heterozygous for DCM1. Helvi was positive for DCM1 and 2. But I mostly did the DNA testing for research ❤️💔
My dobie Nikita died today at park as she was running she suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing , she appeared so healthy and was only 4 years old 😢 she is in doggy heaven with all other doggies and pets
My dobie Nikita collapsed suddenly at the park as I set her free to run as she usually does , seconds later of her running she collapsed and I dropped down to give her cpr and then rushed her to emergency but it was too late 😢RIP Nikita absolutely the best dog I’ve had . So much character and a ton of love for me and my family
She passed today in the afternoon around 3 pm niki appeared super healthy and active this caught me by surprise and I am devastated . Beyond blessed to have experienced her loyalty in this life time
@@Liaoi_braids Just went through the same exact thing his passed Sunday. Zeus seemed alive and well that morning when I let him out to the back yard a few hours later I went out to check on him and he was lying on his side began CPR rushed him to emergency vet hospital but there was nothing they could do. Im having a Necropsy done on him. I feel I just have to know what he passed away from.
A Doberman is the most amazing dog on this planet, your best friend, feels your pain, and loves you unconditionally
So sad 😥. Dobbies is such an amazing dog breed!
I let my Dobe go tonight. At 8 years 11 months of age, he was diagnosed with DCM two weeks ago. He was scheduled for euthanasia then, but the drugs brought him around. The miracle drugs didn't last. His genetic test said he was clear of DCM 1& 2. His COI was 26 % I shared his genetic test to the Doberman diversity project. I ask all Doberman owners to do the same with their test results.
Lost our 6 year old Doberman Thor this pass June 28th. Best Dog hands down!
My 8 yr old Doberman, ACE, showed no symptoms of illness until it was critical. (Fainting episodes, then quick onset of coughing). Emergency vet diagnosed DCM and saved his life that day. With cardiac meds ACE lived 14 months post diagnosis when given 4 months to a year. He was 9 when he passed away. (I will omit the gut retching sob story).
Exact same situation. Nikita got diagnosed at 8 after going critical and practically dying. She's been doing great on meds for almost year now, while she was given just a few weeks to live. I assume she's going to pass some time next year.
I just lost my sweet Samson. He didn’t make it to 2. He was the sweetest. I’ll miss those brown eyes looking up at me wanting to be pet. RIP big guy 😢💕😭
Wish I had watched your video back in 2019 because it would've saved my baby girl Leila's life. She died Saturday night after having too many premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). Her heart rate was 273 beats per minute even after I gave her 90 mg of diltiazem. I unfortunately didn't know she had DCM until May 7th, and she was so advanced that she died 2 weeks later. I regret not euthanizing her now - think I didn't have the courage to do it when I found out - but I would've had her go much more peacefully than her having tachycardia and then fainting. I am just glad that she is at rest and in heaven without struggling to breathe, wetting herself, or having chest pain. Thank you for putting this together and we need to spread the word about this terrible disease. Wish veterinarians would check more than just pulse and respiration rate at vet visits too - pulse oximeter and blood pressure readings would help to identify this disease alot sooner in Dobermans than when they're in their 11th hour.
My Doberman just passed away tonight, she just collapsed and i tried CPR and Mouth to Mouth. Really upset about it, i’m assuming she had DCM but it all just happened so fast. She was almost 9 years old.
We just lost our boy on Christmas eve. He was 10. Now I know what happened to him. Never easy to lose our pets but I feel better knowing why. Thank you for the education!
This video is important for all dog owners! Thank you for making this information available!
Thank you so much!!! It is so educational and so useful
our Coco got diagnosed with DCM today after she had a couple of fainting spells. We are heartbroken. She is 11 and half Doberman half Australian Shepard. The vet put her on Enalapril and Furosemide. Praying the meds give more time with her
Thank you for this video. I just bought the embark dna kit with your code. He will be with us in 1 week. Not first time dog owner but first Dobie owner! 😇♥️
You have very kind eyes and a nice voice
My Doberman, Rusty just got all these symptoms and its complete lockdown herein my city in India. I can't move him to get a scan done.. pretty much helpless...am actually watching him slowly slipping away.. he was just fine and in all his boisterous spirits but then what started as a coughing..which I had initially thought of to be a rather non life threatening kennel cough is now threatening to end his life.. fluid accumulation in his abdomen..he gas stopped taking food since 4 days and now he is barely able stand up.. and there is absolutely no response to my calls apart from a barely noticeable eyebrow raise..feel absolutely helpless... God bless his soul..for as long as he goes through this pain.. he is all of just 5 years.. ,😭😭😭😭😭 he would be my last dog for sure...
Very sorry about your loss. Started watching your videos obsessively when our boy Toro a European Doberman got diagnosed with DCM about 3 weeks ago. His lungs started filling with fluid and was initially misdiagnosed with Kennel cough until we had an ECG done and it was confirmed he had DCM. We started him on his medication but started noticing his fur was becoming a bit rough and he was a bit more cuddly than before. Still at certain times had a lot of energy and we were hopefully and decided to get a baby doberman sister for him as we had given up hope of really breeding him at that point. We had tried uncessefuly for the past two years to do so before knowing he had DCM, or even knowing what DCM was. His heart just wasn't strong enough and although we got the ok to continue to play ball with him by the cardiologist, he passed away last thursday while my wife played fetch with him in the yard. Its been one of the most heartbreaking experiences and we miss him soo much. We live in Costa Rica and really want to get the word out on DCM and will become vocal advocates of genetic testing one to prolong the life of the dogs and two to hopefully breed out DCM as much as posible from Dobermans here. Our Toro passed away when he was 7.5 years old.
I wasn't informed about this disease when i got Black, a male Doberman and my beloved best friend. I made sure from the day he arrived he got every single day his adequate daily dose of exercise from walks to runs. I thought that it was almost impossible for him to die of heart problems, he never even showed signs of their presence from what i know. Then the 26th of April 2019, he was at that time almost 8 years old, he suddenly collapsed on the ground 5 minutes after having played with him. I went to him and tried to wake him up, he was unresponsive and i was shocked about it. I made my mother call the vet multiple times, which wasn't responding, while i tried to do chest compressions for some minutes but my dog was still unresponsive. Many questions came to my mind at this point and i froze by not knowing what to do, by this time many minutes had passed and going to the vet meant that many more minutes would pass and his brain cells would start to die. At this thought i froze even more and he died there without me trying to go the vet. I wasn't in any way prepared for such an event, i feel i am deeply guilty and i can't forgive myself. Almost every single day i ask myself "why didn't i take him to the vet right away?", "why didn't i know about DCM ?", "would have he collapsed if i didn't play with him that day ?". I wish i knew about DCM before that fatal day in order to have made regular heart check ups and in order to have bought beforehand a defibrillator
I lost my best friend because of my gross negligence and incompetence, i let him down when he most needed it. Thank you for sharing this info so that more people will check their dobermans and will know about and prepare for this disease. I hope no one will make my mistakes, losing your best friend because of your faults is absolutely heart wrenching, to this day i have heavy problems sleeping and enjoying life
You did the best you could do at that time
No one is perfect
And i am shure he was truly loved and in the end
Its all that matters
Please dont blame your self
He was lucky to have you in his life 💖 much love and forgiveness
He will be always remembered 🙏🏼💖
@@CarolinawSousa Thank you for your kind and wise words 🙏 a good boy can never be forgotten 🐾
Honestly, there isn't a thing you could have done to save him. Even if you knew about DCM you wouldn't have been able to do anything to keep it from happening. Your boy was truly loved. I bet he had the best life ever
@@0116Lori He really was loved, it's just really difficult to accept not having done in time what was needed for someone who I really cared about but i have come to accept this. Thank you for your words Lori

Thanks Marissa! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Keep your stuff coming too, I'm really liking what you're doing!
@@DobermanPlanet thanks im working on an introduction video. We just got our pup on Saturday!
@@diamondsandthoughts So very cool! Can't wait to see the little guy!
My Doberman just passed away from DCM at 4 and half years old. He was a European Doberman from British Columbia Canada from a breeder that no longer sales dogs but caused a lot of pain from 6 years in business. Belonged to and had these certifications, showed all these testing's her dogs had, beautiful setup where it looked like a top breeder.
This is the second time I had to go through DCM first was a North American Doberman over 10 years old, my veterinary gave warfarin. When I notified the breeder he did not care said Doberman was over ten that's good enough , other wise than his heart he was top contrition should of lived for many more years.
My European Doberman had health problems from just over a year with arthritis in is elbow. I noticed at 3 he was drinking a lot of water and the water left over in his bowl was slimy. In the spring we had temperatures in the 30 degrees Celsius range and wild fire smoke and suddenly he would not eat and no energy to walk. I had to take him to multiple Vets to get medicine to help ,Vetmedin mg 2 capsules every 12hours, Furosemide 40mg every 12hours. It took 2 months to get an appointment with a specialist to get a cardiac ultrasound and ECG. He died three weeks after seeing the cardiologist which gave false hope down played how bad it was.
From my experience when you see sudden signs of lack of appetite and energy trouble breathing you have up to 4 months to spend with your dog. Make it the best 4 months you can. The Vets want to pull om your heart strings get all these tests, send you to specialists give you false hope, down play how bad it is. X-Rays will show the condition of the heart and fluid in the lung. They know the medicine that will reduce symptoms and make your dog more comfortable the extra tests is just a money grab.
I grow up with Dobermans love the breed but Odin will be my last Doberman I could not go through this again. Dobermans are a very special dog loyal, loving and give everything to their owners. When it was time to repay all he gave me I could not help.
Great, informative & in depth video,Learned so much in this video,it’s sad that DCM is even a thing :(
New sub here and thanks for this info❤
You're welcome! Thanks for subbing! I hope you get a lot out of my channel!
I had a blue Doberman but sadly he passed away about a year ago. we were told he had liver failure but he had a lot of the same symptoms you’ve talked about :(
My Dobie (Cooper) died abruptly last week from DCM at 5 and a half years of age. I knew that could be an issue but it was literally a one day affair. We’re devastated as we didn’t see it coming at all. He was jumping and playing the day before. Some day we’ll get another Doberman but I will definitely look more closely at the pedigree. I couldn’t go through this again.
Norm
Really feel for you norm, I woke up Tuesday morning to my perfect 6 year old boy died in his sleep can only assume it was the same thing as he was perfect in every way when I went to sleep that night. So heartbreaking that this terrible thing is so common on such a great breed
Same here! I lost the dog of my heart and soul to this brutal disease. SO sorry for all of you who have suffered this terrible heartbreak losing your beloved dobies. PRAY FOR A CURE FOR DCM!!
Also, mention that Holter monitoring should begin at age 2 and every year thereafter. In addition to avoiding the grain free foods, look for the addition of Taurine, and speak to a veterinarian that KNOWS Dobermans. There are a few other supplements that can be added to the food to help with this horrid condition. I lost one Dobe to DCM, she was only 5. Testing had been done on her parents, and they were supposedly clear... thanks for the informative video.
I wish I found this before buddy! My 8 y/o had all symptoms you mentioned and she was diagnosed with DCM after nearly passing away. She's medicated right now and doing well. Great Channel!
Fred Chevry were u feeding grain free? As I currently am and I’m thinking about switching
@@nancydee6106 No, but I was in the process of switching her and the puppy to raw diet.
@@fredchevry5786 did raw diet have any good effects on her condition?
@@titanhound6671 It did not. She got diagnosed about 1-2 months after we started raw.
@@fredchevry5786 Is she still kicking?
Thank you SO much for this video. I am currently working on a research project on DCM in dogs, and how their grain free diet can cause DCM. I have linked this video, your other video and your article on my page. Thank you again!!!!!! (love your videoooooossss)
I am saddened to hear this. My Dobie is 2. I will be completely devastated if she gets this. 😪
Smart man 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Hey have you ever heard of dancing Doberman disease? I’m pretty sure my Doberman has it and it would be cool if y’all could do a video on it. Not much is known about it and it resembles other more commonly known problems like hip dysplasia and wobblers
nice one! really learnt a lot ! I wanted to ask something ... pls, Is it advisable to feed Dobermans with raw meat diet?
Thank you so much! I was feeding my Dobes grain free diet. Is there a food brand(s) that you recommend?
No problem Joel, I'm really glad you got something from this. I keep my current food recommendations here: www.dobermanplanet.com/recommended-products/food-treats/ I use that page because on rare occasions I'll see new research or something that will lead me to change my recommendation and I like to keep it on that page where I can easily update it. Right now though I'm pretty confident in my choice (it's the food I'm feeding my own dog now also).
My first, a red female, lived to 13+ . We just lost my second on june 18 at 6.5 years old. I took her out for her normal pre bed pee and she collapsed and died 30' from our door. Absolutely no indication anything was wrong. Death was near instantaneous. We tried reviving but there was nothing. I passed on a post mordem. Then found this info on DCM. Make sure to check your dogs and be careful buying pups. I believe mine died from it.
Awww... so sorry. I had a very similar experience with my girl who had just had her 6th b/d a week before she literally dropped dead right in front of my face. It was horrifying. I totally feel you. It more than likely was DCM, otherwise referred to as "cardio" and it does cause sudden death. An absolutely horrific experience.
I just lost my boy at 2.5 years old. He had DCM and VWD. I had two dobies prior that lived just shy of 12 years old. I had both of them at the same time. My female was 2 years older but the two got along very well. I also know that one of their puppies also lived to be 12.
I’m so sorry. I just lost my boy Jan 5th from DCM. He was 7.5 years old. He also had a low percentage of VWD. I would love another Dobie when I’m ready but I’m scared to go through the heartbreak of losing them too soon.
Dobermans are like dogs, but different. I recommend finding a Vet who has/had Dobes. LET ME SAY IT AGAIN GET A VET EXPERIENCED WITH DOBERMANS. nuff said 😎
Very good advice.
my doberman has 1 copy of DCM and the veterinarian recommended to keep him away from grains
I recently lost my beautiful, most precious, most intelligent, ninja trained red dobi named Brooklyn. She was 6 1/2 y/o. Wish I would have known more about this earlier on. Would you happen to have the list of dog food brands that you were speaking of? Just curious to see what brands/types are on the list.
Thanks for the video, very informative.
Thanks for this video! I got my dog tested after watching your DNA testing video- in spite of the fact that my breeder said both parents were clean for DCM1 and 2. Well, embark says she has one dose of DCM1. BUT embark also says that DCM1's effect is completely dominant- that having two of the bad alleles is no worse than having one. That's not what you're saying here- you're saying it's incompletely dominant. Do you maybe have a link to a research paper about this? Again, thanks for all these excellent videos!
Anne
Lost my 6 Years old Dobermann last week because of Dcm . I love the breed but I will not get another Dobermann because of Dcm
I feel the same way
I just lost my Bruce , Sunday evening to this 💔
so sorry
Do you have health insurance on your Dobermans or any other kind of health exam schedule of any kind? What would you recommend?
DCM can be caught early. I noticed you didn’t cover anything about health testing the heart. Most reputable breeders will do this testing with their breeding stock and encourage new owners to do the same. We holter test our dobie 1-2x a year and follow that with a cardiology test every year or two. The breeder offer the holter equipment free of charge to owners of her puppies. It is definitely worth addressing in a follow up video. I do enjoy your videos but wanted to add my two cents on this one.
agree about the holter monitoring. Very important!
In risk of sounding bitter I"m going to say it. People have some nerve asking 3500 dollars for a pet with such risk of a deadly health problem at such a young age. I always keep my pets to the end and I don't want the end to be five years old, that just sucks. If I had a doberman would I do this? Of course i would if I could afford it. I wanted a doberman in the worst way. Practically speaking, I can't get myself to do it. I am not going to knowingly set myself up for that. Years of raising puppy properly, and then expensive monitoring only to lead into a few more years of expensive drugs to help the animal if and only if it was caught in time to even save the animal. Sometimes the drugs don't even work. Sorry, but that is not a reputable breeder in any sense of the word.
Always wanted a Doberman but all this with DCM and Liver problems i guess its not for everyone.
Where can I find the list of foods that are more common with DCM?
Had dobies over 20 years lost my last one last week had dcm was horrible but then hot a womb infection which she was not strong enough to have op unfortunately am lost she was my baby xxx
My boy Zeus died at age 5 from this suddenly and he was on medication for it.
Mine died from this on Tuesday. I’m lost. Blaming myself. But he died in my arms. Can you do a video about loss maybe? I keep going back and forth blaming myself but also thankful I was there to hold him. He died less than an hour after seeing the vet, waiting for a phone call from a specialist.
I'm so sorry Jess, I know that nothing I can say will make it better. But I can promise you that it wasn't your fault. DCM is so abrupt and horrible because basically nothing can be done about it. Honestly, the best thing you could have done is just love the hell out of your dog and be with him when he needed you the most... which you clearly were. He was lucky to have found you as his owner. My prayers will be with you and him. Hang in there my friend...
I am so sorry Jess , knowing how you feel. I lost my precious Dobie girl too. Take care and lots of love from Germany
Jess lost mine on Wednesday too from this, it was horrible we had all the scans and everything done on the heart and was just told how bad it was , started him on heart tablets and fluid retention ones to help his lungs also , but I only got a couple of weeks and he started to deteriorate, it's so sad seeing your dog become a shell of a dog they wer and there's nothing u can do to help them, he gave me the (look) and I had to rush him to the vets to put him to sleep he just gave up and stop eating and everything, it's like he hung on for me as much as he could and then asked me to help him, I'm still very very cut up about the whole thing and like u i question what could i have done , and the truth is nothing , I'm just glad i gave him the best home for 2.8 years of his life and did all i could do for him money no question. I took him home after and buried him, where he belongs at home with his family, it's such a heartache to deal with , i never even knew about this till he got it its kept very quiet in the kennel club
Terry Shannon I was too late. It happened so fast, still haunting me, in fact, I got a new puppy, named Simon, he’s at daycare now do I could rest a bit. I’ve spent most of this time crying over Maximus. I told him every day that he was my son, and my angel, and I love him more than anything in the world. I’m so sorry. I wish they could live forever. I hope on the other side they are there, and time doesn’t exist, and we can see them again. Hang in there. Keep talking to him. He hears you.
Mine is 2 years old and just got diagnosed 😞
Thanks for the info. Im pretty sure that I just learned that my doberman is going to die. Any suggestions for a non grain free diet for a doberman who has severe allergies to grains? asking seriously. One piece of bread and my dog breaks out in hives all over his body and he chews his paws till they bleed, but grain free he has been doing great, until he stopped eating, lost 20 pounds, and started coughing when I come home from work.
I lost mine yesterday
Hey I wanted to see if I could get your opinion on something. I found a breeder that's taking deposits on puppies that will be born at the end of next month. Both of the parents have been tested the dad is clear but the mom has one copy of a mutation in the PDK4 gene associated with increased risk for DCM and two copies of a mutation in the vWF gene, but she is clear of all other 163 diseases. Do you think it would be safe to get a puppy from this litter or would you look elsewhere?
That's a tough call. Having one copy of the PDK4 gene is very common and just means she's a carrier and at moderate risk. Having two for vWF is a bit concerning. What would I do? Probably talk with the breeder and see if I can get the puppy tested directly (even offer to pay for it if you have to). In the scheme of things it's a small risk if you have to walk away from the litter. Then you'll have the exact results for the puppy... and won't be just guessing based on how the parents tested.
Can you exclude this possibility if both parents don't have the mutation?
If I get a puppy that is clear from the genetic test, how high is the risk of them developing DCM in their later life?
Humans get dilated cardiomyopathy too. Surely we can learn how to treat the condition in both species from the experience of each species.
Do good breeders health test for this before breeding? Is there anyway to know the doberman you are buying is going to be healthy or do you have to get the test yourself after you've brought your puppy home
Any responsible/reputable breeder absolutely tests for DCM as well as many other genetic issues like vWD (von Willebrand's disease) + others. Then, once you get a pup, do a DNA test yourself, as well.
How does top breeders not comment on your posts😂
My female dobeman suddenly death by dyspnoea, sometimes I feel that was my guitl because I ran with she about 10 miles per week... probably I pushed het to her limit...
I just had a Doberman puppy die he was the runt he was eight weeks old can puppies have it too because at first I thought he might have Pavo. But my oldest dog Had the virus when she was born so her symptoms were a lot different than his he was eating and drinking and he didn’t throw up until the last day and had solid poop
I give my dobe heart supplement & changed to Fromm dog food
Love Pet fromm with grain? I’m currently feeding grain free and have been for three years I guess I’m going to switch
Its Fromm Has rice etc, i use Other foods , I love & you and use a heart supplement too. Thats important!
Hi, what is the name of the heart supplement you’re using?
My doberman is very weak now i dont now what happens
Hello everyone, my doberman Gerta got diagnosed today, on the day of her 3rd birthday with DCM. My family and I are heartbroken by the prognosis. The vet did mention that he suspects it to be nutritional DCM, as she was fed a grain free diet, unbeknownst to us the damage it could cause in this breed. We switched her over to chicken and rice for now, homecooked until we receive Royal Canine Early Cardiac feed. Does anyone have any advice at all? Is there any cure? I have came across a stem cell study online back in 2010 that was conducted in Florida, but no results in terms of efficacy to be found, which leads me to think it didnt work, does anyone know? Please, if anyone has the name of a vet, anything at all that would help, from the bottom of our hearts we will be eternally grateful, we are devestated 🙏🏻
i am looking to get a doberman for a service dog. i really love this breed but i also don’t want to pour years and lots of money into training the dog for it to pass away at a young age. do you think that if i find a good breed who tries not to breed dogs with the genes together i could have a healthy dog ?
Would it be possible to fight this disease by testing all dobermann and only breed with the dogs who have the lowest risk?
That's what the Doberman Diversity Project is attempting to solidify by having all Doberman owners DNA test. The problem is: Unscrupulous/greedy breeders just carry on. Unfortunately, I know a few of them.
How soon can you test a pup for DCM ?
I suggest scheduling Vet visits every 6 months or so and have them perform EKG and heart tests available. Hopefully they can catch any potential common problems early!!!
My doberman was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. He has got wounds on both his paws, swelling on back legs. He can't walk either. What should I do
ask your vet.
I have looked at your food suggestions and feel it maybe misleading, im no expert, but where it says carbohydrate sources should be from peas, lentils and potatoes, these are what is replacing the grain for grain free, and perhaps a chemical within these types or legumes is what is causing DCM, have any light to shed on this?
Stefan Mallory So what do you recommend we feed
Stefan Mallory yes!!! There have been studied debunking the grain free fear. It’s the lentils that are the supposed cause of DCM. You can find a GREAT grain free food without lentils! No need to put your pet on Purina lol
My girl Dobie died from heart disease at age 10 yrs 11 months. This is a great video but kind of breaks my heart cause of her dieing of this. Her valves were leaking into her stomach. She was always thirsty. I had her on lasix.
I’m so sorry Tami. I’m going through the same thing you went through. My boy diesel is almost 8 years old and he’s so thirsty and there’s fluid in his chest. This is terrible I can’t stop crying.
@@daynescott1 I know the feeling. It’s awful. Is he on lasix? That helps with the fluid. I am sorry you are going through this.
@@tamigarrett3513 He’s on furosemide, diltiazem, and pimobendan. The irregular beating of his stomach is what’s killing me to see. He’s eating but I don’t want him to be in any pain. My wife and I decided today that we are going to put him down this Friday🥺
@@daynescott1 I am sorry to hear that. My girl was on that same medication. Unfortunately heart disease is common in Doberman. You are in my prayers.
@@tamigarrett3513 yes and I had no clue. I know I gave him the best life possible and he gave our family all the love a dog could give. He was like a human. Since we put him down yesterday morning at our home, I feel so empty and depressed. It’s hard to get out of bed and my house seems so empty and quiet. This is by far the toughest thing I’ve had to do in my life.
My dog became sick with DCM and my heart is in agony he’s going to leave us my trust is in Christ one day he wipe away all our tears
Hello John.
We have a Doberman puppy. She'll be a 5 month in January 10.
About one month ago she started getting some pimples on her back and neck. Doctor said it's similar to acne or just allergies. We changed her food from chicken to salmon, but still the same. Also we changed her shampoo. Her doctor prescribed steroids, it's better now, but she can't take it all all the time. Did you hear anything about this problem with Dobermans?
They just have very sensitive skin
Do you still think that Orijen puppy food is a better option? It is grain free
I keep my recommendations list updated with what dog food I think is best at the current time here: www.dobermanplanet.com/recommended-products/food-treats/
I did recently update the type of food I recommend after reading over all the DCM studies. It seems like diets that contain grains may be better for the heart (as long as it's not too much grain of course).
No, Orijen is reported as one of the leading brands linked to DCM.
Purina???? That just put all of this information in the toilet for me
Stefan Mallory no it’s not. It’s just owned by the same company as AKANA, which is most closely linked. Orijen is not closely linked. I have read extensively about this. And have a 13 year old Rhodesian on Orijen right now! Just some interesting info for ya 😉
Guess Who Orijen is an excellent option (NOT AKANA). I’ve raised dogs on it and it’s great. However, Doberman puppies should not have puppy food, it is best they eat adult. But Orijen has some great adult options and many flavors to keep your dog interested
My doberman just tested positive for this. The breeder had insured that both of her parents didn't carry the gene. Is there any way that explains why that wouldn't show up in her parents? Or did the breeder lie to us? She has 1 copy.
Recessive genes
So I’m getting a puppy soon. If both of the parents get tested and they don’t have it will it be possible for the puppy to still get it?
The parents should already have been tested before being bred. A reputable/quality breeder should be able to provide you with the genetic testing info on the parents. If they can't, go elsewhere for your Doberman. And sorry to say, but the chances of both parents being completely clear of DCM is slim to none.
@@gtiernan1 the
Breeder states both parents were tested and they don’t have it. I was just wondering if i would have to get mine tested still.
@@riinajesus203 I would. Can't hurt anything, right? This way you'll know and have some peace of mind. Happy for you!! I just got a 9 week old puppy and I will be having him DNA tested and when he's older, we will do all the cardio testing, too. Have fun and enjoy!! Dobermans are the best!!
Kara was diagnosed with heart disease n the meds didn't work. We only had 2 weeks with her, she passed at 8 yrs young.
Hi Debby, I’m experiencing tonight what you’ve experienced when you lost your dobie. Diesel is almost 8 years old and we got back from the vet tonight and he has heart disease. I can’t stop crying for my beautiful boy. I’m going to try and do everything and I’m hoping the meds work. RIP to your Kara

Someone had left a female Doberman about a year old tied up on my patio she is a very sweet dog I only have one problem with her she keeps wanting to attack my female American Staffer they really dislike each other, what to doy 2:59
John, since this is a genetic condition seen in testing, passed on by parents, why are we blaming dog foods??
My understanding of the studies that have been done is that they don't know the real cause of DCM. That genetic mutation will increase the dog's risk of getting DCM, but it is not the cause. Same with grain free foods. Adds to the risk but it's not the cause of DCM.
At the risk of pissing some people off - bad breeding practices starting back in about the 1970s, and one line in particular (which I will not name here) spread the DCM throughout ALL Dobermans. I believe there are no Dobermans anywhere that do not have some level of DCM1 or 2 in their bloodlines. Check in with the Doberman Diversity Project for full disclosure about the severity of this disease and how it affects all Dobermans in some way. The studies evidently showed that the grain free foods actually depleted the gut of specific nutrients which make for healthy hearts; that's because instead of "grains" legume proteins were substituted; particularly pea protein which actually sucks the gut dry of beneficial bacteria needed for overall health.
My dog have dcm😓
This is disappointing. I wanted a doberman, but I think this has got to be a deal breaker for me.
I can relate but don't let this discourage you. I have had Dobermans all my life ( 61 years old here), my mother raised them and my grandfather raised them. I only lost one to DCM. Research the bloodlines, make sure you locate a highly reputable breeder, DNA test, and follow this channel, other websites and pages all over the internet. Dobermans are the most awesome dogs, don't miss out.
It's not the fact that it 8s grain free. The problem is with what the grain 8s being replaced with. Legumes and potatoes are the most common replacements, both are high in carbs. The legumes interfere with the body's ability to absorb taurine. Taurine is important for the heart.
I feed raw chicken hearts for taurine. Please you should still avoid corn, wheat, white rice, and soy.
Make sure the first 5 ingredients are not peas, chicken peas, lentil, etc.
absolutely right!
I love your channel but 1 thing really bothered me here & that’s the grain free issue. Our dogs are not livestock & do not require grain. People need to be realistic & start feeding their dogs like we are supposed to eat. Not out of a box or bag. I realize it’s not cheap but even doing this a couple of times a week could certainly help. Go to a local locker & ask about organs add some veggies, fast etc. your so knowledgeable just need more on diet. The world is too consumed in easy to grab processed foods.
Its 3am new year morning my dog died six hours ago I can’t sleep I’m on the couch. I took him for his last walk, and he just fell and died. My heart is on fire in pain. Jesus help me Jesus help me Jesus help me.
i thought going with a raw diet would be very good. i guess not
I would like to hear if anyone has had a Doberman die of Cardiomyopathy and was also not vaccinated ? Is it only the vaccinated Doberman that die of this? Is there any studies comparing health of unvaccinated dogs vs vaccinated? I think a lot of these health issues in certain breeds is that there genetic make up can’t handle Vaccinations
That's an interesting idea. My boy who was vaccinated died at 4. My first Dobie a female was unable to be vaccinated after she developed an autoimmune disease at 4. She ended up living to 14 when she fell out of remission.
If you have a Doberman or any breed that is susceptible to heart disease, it is absolutely critical to feed it a raw diet.
Whether it is grain free or grain inclusive, dog food is just CRAP and causes all sorts of diseases; especially skin conditions, allergies, and inflammation. Giving your dog DRY dog food (kibble) is especially horrible. It's like purposely making your dog sick. The lack of moisture is extremely stressful on the organs.
Dogs need a high protein diet, but guess what? Studies have proven that high protein DRY food damages the liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
- Grain free? It makes your dog sick and has a risk of DCM.
- Grain inclusive? It makes your dog sick.
- High protein kibble? It damages the organs.
- Moderate/low protein kibble? That's not enough protein.
Then what about wet dog food you ask? To be honest I haven't done enough research on wet dog food, but from what I currently know sadly there are very few good quality wet food brands out there, and they are SUPER expensive. They can be just as expensive or even more expensive than commercial raw foods. So if you're willing to pay those ridiculous prices, then there is no reason to choose wet food over raw food.
This is so full of information and put together so well . we are using DCM care pack of Planet ayurveda for our pet its so effective
You can spend $3k on a paper dobe
...
All lines in Eruro and American have these. My first 75/25 European American male......died 13.5 spleen bleeding. My 100%European died at 6.5 years. I love doberman. I can't have another. My heart hurts too bad.
I did spend that with a top breeder. I never fed him a grain free diet this disease is so prevalent its a total disaster to those of us who adore the breed. My boy died at 4 from dcm. He was my life. I'll never get another Doberman it's just horrible. My boy had his first seizure and even with very expensive treatment was dead 4 months later.
are you going to buy another Doberman?buy a red one next time ....start new life again
Yup, we're talking with breeders now! We're ready to move on I think. My family just needed a little time to accept the loss of our family member.
@@DobermanPlanet that's good , i love your videoes.i will buy one Doberman too, after i move to Dallas... what do you think about white Doberman with blue eyes?...
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoy them! The white (or z factor) Doberman is very controversial. I don't feel super strongly one way or another other than to say that if you do look into a white one... make sure there is LOTS of health testing done (with proof) and a breeder who cares about health as the primary aspect of their breeding. Some people believe just owning one is unethical.
