    GREAT VIDEO!!!! thanks a million. Made it a lot easier by just mounting the power steering unit first, this was just held in by the long bolt, then slide in the steering column in, just had to make sure the gears were lined up right, as there is one spline that is wider than the rest.

    Brandon Morrison, You did excellent job explaining everything that goes on in this video ! I also have a 2009 Chevy Malibu with the exact same problem . . So, even though I can't fix it myself due to a disability , BUT I learned a lot as to what my mechanic will be going through . Thank you Brandon Morrison ! Have a great week ahead .

    Good video, one suggestion would be to actually show replacement of the torque sensor, not just the motor sensor assembly. There are a couple steps for making sure the sensor is lined up properly. Also, after replacing the torque sensor it needs to be recalibrated using a scan tool with special functions for the system to work properly. I replaced a lot of these at the dealer I used to work at.

    • @christopherw4527
      @christopherw4527 Před rokem

      I noticed that it calls to be recalibrated. Could you tell me if I have to have fix assist scanner to recalibrate or can I just use a harbour freight scan tool to do this? The dealer told us before that they couldn't get a scan tool to work on our car for some reason. Thanks so much if you have the time to respond.

      @@christopherw4527 Sorry for the late reply, the notification showed up in a different email folder.
      I can't tell you if fix assist works or not as I have not used that brand or any scanners from Harbor freight. I've used GM factory scanners, Snap-on and Matco scanners. I would assume any decent full fledged scan tool with special functions menu will be capable of it. A generic Code Reader or scanner that only does powertrain/airbag/abs probably won't because you have to communicate with the Electric power steering module(computer) to be able to access this special function. There are two calibrations to do. One is torque sensor calibration, the other is steering angle sensor calibration. there may be one other one i'm forgetting. Hope this still helps after 5 months

      @@brandonlangenfeld9814 Thanks for the reply. I actually have the car still, but it is literally buried under snow which has now turned to ice. I'll be able to check it in another month or so. I'm considering buying high nickel scan tool this spring. I think you are right on the two different calibrations if I remember correctly.

    I looked for a video for awhile before I attempted to replace the torque sensor and PS motor on an 06 Malibu my son just bought. This was exactly what I was looking for. We had the steering column and motor out in less then 15 minutes. You just saved us a ton of time and frustration. We'll finish up this weekend when we both have time. THIS is how to make a repair video!! Excellent job going through very clearly explaining the steps. Too many point to the thing needing repair, then "do this to it", then "Reinstall it and it's done!!".
    A friend just called to tell me he's lost PS on his '07, so it looks like I'll be performing this repair soon. Thank you for taking the time to make a most helpful video showing the details and saving me a bunch of poking experimentally at things swearing like a sailor while figuring out where that last well hidden #%{£@$ screw resides, and also for clearly showing the locking tab on those damned connectors that usually need to be disconnected by feel. This deserves multiple thumbs-ups - I very much appreciate the effort you put into this!

    Awsome video, just ordered the parts today (both torque and eps). They are used so i have no idea the position of the car its coming off of. The eps and the torque sensor are being shipped together as a single unit so more then likely they are coming off the same vehicle. I should get them in a few days and I'll let you know the result. Such as if i had to have a tech calibrate it or anything like that.

      I had the same problem. I figured out what happened was when I put the replacement torque sensor in there's a pin that holds it in place from spinning. I had to remove the PIN before I put the torque sensor in so it turned which makes it out of alignment. You have to leave that pin in and instead turn the shaft so that the torque sensor gets put on properly. Does that make sense?

    this is a good video, but don't put yourselves through more work than you have to. slide the drivers seat back as far as it will and you will be able to reach the bottom of the dash board. There is two 7mm screws to take out and you can pull the bottom out. if you don't have fancy tool a 1/4 wrench will get the star screws out. it a tight squeeze but it's better than tearing the whole dash board apart. trust me I've done more than i can count now.

    Thanks and may God bless you and I wish you everything good for the rest of your life. I had this problem 2days ago and the mechanic wants $300 plus parts $670. I watched ur video 4times, bought some spanners and sockets, went to the junk yard, uninstalled the unit from a crashed Malibu and paid $70. I was able to install it in my car on first trial. Wow! You fucking saved my life. Fuck GM!!!! Their company can rot in hell. My power steering went offline on the high way on a 70mph zone. I was so lucky I did not panic if not I would have crashed. Thanks BRO!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!

      Godwin Thompson I just got quoted $840 for just the torque sensor. GM or dealership won’t cover. I’ve already had the ESC sensor paid for and replaced once a few months before GM put out the “special repairs” notice/recall/warranty replacement, and they would not reimburse me for that. Second time the entire system went out and was actually covered. 6 months ago paid $600 again for just the ESC sensor and now want $840 for torque sensor.
      If I can change a headlight on this car, bet I can replace this sensor.
      Thank you for the video!

      I am not sure. They have a designated amount of time they charge that is preset by a labor guide. Each and every possible job is already predetermined based on vehicle options. Labor and parts is usually pretty close to 50/50 at a dealership.
