  • The cheap bike challenge at Whistler bike park! I bought a Walmart bike for $180 and pushed it to the limits on the worlds best MTB trails! But how long will it last?
    Mountain biking is amazing but for some people it is just to expensive so I decided to buy a cheap mountain bike from Walmart to see if it would work on the worlds best MTB trails in Whistler Bike Park! The bike I chose had 24'' wheels and was fully rigid with no suspension what so ever and single speed gearing. The bike had mechanical disc brakes, but were they really going to be strong enough to stop me on such a technical mountain. I started of small on a blue trail but then slowly made my way up to the most famous jump trail in the world, A-Line. But how much can this cheap bike really handle?
    Whistler bike park is an absolute mountain bike paradise with a huge variety of different trails on offer from high speed jump trails to hardcore technical DH runs, this place is the best!
    I hope you enjoy the video!

      Sam is a special character, like a cartoon character. Dude has more skills in his pinky finger than most mountain bikers will ever have. It's not that the bike is awesome- its a cheap retro looking bmx bike, that is meant to look like something SE already makes at less than half the price. It has a QUILL STEM IN 2019! im sure there had to be a few trailside repairs, or at the very least Sam lands everything like it's on a cloud and he is just that good... For safety reasons, regular folk should never expect these kinda bikes to take this kind of torture...

      Many cycling channels on youtube are influenced by higher end bike brands, it could be the people run cycle shops or are sponsored by the big bike brands or simply people who need to justify their investment in a high end bike. There is no question than many walmart bikes are not fit for purpose but there are also many videos where it is clear the walmart bike has not been properly setup or they have purposely chosen the wrong walmart bike to review and test. Even here I don't think Sam has actually serviced and checked the bike much before testing. If I buy a walmart bike I know assembly at the factory will be poor so would probably give it a huge service before riding it making sure everything is correctly tightened and there is grease where it needs to be which would be typical of many LBS bikes before the customer takes it home just so if I was reviewing the bike it would be a fair review. If you are buying a bike from walmart you are buying a bike knowing you will have to service it yourself otherwise you aren't going to be saving much money if you take it to a LBS for all servicing and repairs.

    To be fair, of all the Walmart bikes, that bike makes a lot of sense for a bike park in terms of a Walmart bike lasting:
    ✔No pogo stick suspension to break or eject you
    ✔Single speed, so no chain slaping, derailleur to break off, or chain falling off
    ✔24" rims naturally stiffer than cheap Walmart 27.5/29
    ✔Even junky mechanical discs still beat rim brakes, no rim brake rub
    ✔Crossbar on the handlebar means even small 25.4 clamp area has stiff bars

This video just goes to show a good rider can ride any bike good. If you're looking for an affordable way to get into the hobby, perfect. There is no reason to buy an insane bike if you don't have the skills or endurance to use it. I know I’m a bit late to the party with this video but just wanted to say how brilliant and refreshing this video was ❤️ The only other videos I’ve seen with cheap bikes has been the CZcamsr bitching and laughing about the bikes. For somebody like myself who’s on such a tight budget, full time carer and the only down time I get I like to go out in my cheap mountain bike, I wish I could afford something more bud I never will. I’m more than happy with my £150 bike. I dint do trails like this, it’s more for leisure and it’s been soo good for my mental health. I just feel kind of embarrassed at times when I see the serious bikers kind of sniggering about my bike.
    So THANK YOU for this video buddy. This has made me proud again of my little cheap mountain bike. ❤️❤️

    • @Metal-Possum
      @Metal-Possum Před 4 lety +3

      Sam does ride a bike pretty damn well though. A decent rider won't break as much stuff as a bad one attempting the same things. Landing straight and smooth makes a huge difference for the longevity of wheels, cranks, forks, etc.
      Not to mention, the hubs in this bike will be shot after a week's use. Walmart bikes usually fail at the hubs first.

    • @P5YcHoM4N
      @P5YcHoM4N Před 4 lety +6

      @@Metal-Possum But then you can hit up the usual scumbags to get a second hand set of wheels with decent hubs. I have been using the same frame since 2013. Majority of the components have been changed when funds allowed. It has enabled biking on the cheap. For sure if I saved up what I spent I'd have a really expensive bike with all of the toys. But I'd also be saving still because "for 500 more I could get xyz bike." Instead I have had 6 years of fun with no signs of slowing down.

    • @HulluJanne
      @HulluJanne Před 4 lety +1

      @@Metal-Possum If the hubs (and even pedals) are not loosened and adjusted correctly for proper running clearance, they will be shot quite fast. One of the local bike shop keepers said that no matter what wheels (with cup and cone obviously and not really the proper expensive stuff) he takes off from the self, the bearings need to be adjusted or they will eat themselfs.
      The cup and cone stuff is most probably tightened with a machine with the lightest possible torque, but any torque on the cone nut is too much. Also if one has QR hubs, especially with internal type QR's, like XT (lot of clamping force) they need to be seriously loose.
      Once the QR is tightened, it pushes the cones inward and the bearings become tighter. I was actually a bit amazed how much there has to be slack in the bearings when they are off the bike. This is at least with some cheap old retro stuff.
      Almost every bike I ever worked on, had crunchy hubs. Mostly its the cone nut that starts to pit and then goes the balls if the lubrication is not fine. There has been some cases that the balls are still usable (not the brightest, but no scuffing or pitting) and cones are blown.

      HulluJanne Agreed. I assembled target bicycles for 10 years. first off the hubs are always assembled way too tight. Second there must be a shortage of grease in China. However,I do have a couple their bicycles that have 3000 miles plus on them. I’m in my late 50s and I know these retro bikes like the back of my hand. Being that said sometimes running rigid is fun!
