something oddly charming about the fact that Producer John has such an expanded role in this episode and still isn't mic'd up properly
Indeed, I think it affirms Producer John is still the behind the scenes magic that's here for a special episode, and it makes it even more unique :)
@@revolver265 And a real eye opener as to how much of their personal lives goes into the work. He brought his dads game!
🤣🤣
I still can't believe that Santa Claus has been on this show for the Xmas challenges but John's role has still not expanded that much
He has altered your channel, pray he doesn't alter it further.
The best use for a cricket bat is in a zombie apocalypse when you're just trying to make it to the pub.
or battle a giant mutant turtle until you realize you’re fighting for the same reasons and join forces
I see a Shaun of the Dead reference, I press like.
You've got red on you.
Shaun of the Dead is good, but I liked Hot Fuzz a bit more.
Pool cues are helpful too.
Don't stop me now.
E: "He's gone full cream tea"
L: "That sounds like a British idiom"
Me: It is now!
@SCP - 1669 - 50 I was going to say the same. I envision it as "gone FCT" with a stylized cup of tea next to it (going with the acronym just to confuse people - then again "gone full cream tea" would be confusing as well I guess)
Start of show: Luke being an absolute problem child while Jon tries to explain the game.
End of show: Luke roaring in victory for the best game ever!
So, same child from beginning to end.
man, I want to upvote you, but the likes are at 69
This, and that one episode of Monster Factory are my only frames of reference for Cricket.
Jim Johnman would've been more overpowered than Tom Nook in this game.
This is pretty much it. A lot of stuff happens and you don't really know what but you cheer everything and everyone goes home happy.
For me, it's this and that one episode of French Fields, where Hester tries to explain cricket to the mayor while her husband interjects unhelpfully. ("Darling Daughters")
Don't think I have ever been this invested in a cricket match - this was an absolutely excellent SotW. Loved every second of it. Gotta say though Tom Nook getting an LBW is hilarious with how tiny his legs are
It's either this or the 2019 world Cup final.
Comedically this episode is tough.
Every joke ends in cricket(s)...
Booooo! Booooo! (Ellen would be proud of you)
Hey dad when are you returning with the milk?
@@ithinkitsaurus How dairy ask me that question?
@@mar_speedman I would boo... but he's right. :D
Go to your room!
Such a sweet thing for Jon to bring in. So clearly a loved old game too with the little bit of wear and tear
How rad is that.
I remember playing this game at primary school - you can use normal d6s (or even just one) if you remember what a 5 stands for and label the "out" numbers.
Producer John breaking the Pokemon magazine streak deserves an applause 😆👏🏼
This game's ingenious in its refined simplicity: with nothing but two custom dice, it captures the essence of cricket in a way that video games have always struggled to accomplish.
Jolly good show! (of the weekend)
finally Oxtra gets to the game that truly matters Cricket and even better in dice form. well done Producer Jon
It is impressive how much the two of you got into that.
This sort of tabletop sports simulation with minimal strategy is always fascinating, no matter how light (as in this) or heavy the simulation is. If you do more tabletop sports episodes, would be fascinated to see the two of you play Title Bout, which is a boxing game.
It reminded me of the tennis TTRPG they played years back, which they equally got into.
Oh my god, Tom Nook is a cricket maestro. A century and 30+ in just 8 overs!
The amount of times he survived an Howzat was unreal!
This is probably the best thumbnail of a show of the weekend. I love these so much!
"Is this a basketball?"
Luke so bewildered by sports that he went full American. Lol!

Since Ellen picked Doom Guy and Luke picked Link, isn't that a conflict? How's he going to play on both teams at the same time?
16:02 they give a nod to this very conundrum 😂
There are all sorts of different Links though. They just have to specify which Link Luke has picked.
Time machines obviously.
@@Ajescent So the Ocarina of Time?
no matter who loses, link wins
18:02 the drama of that slow mo was intense! I absolutely love Owzthat! It’s the best pen and paper dice game. Jon continues to prove that he is the real hero of Oxboxtra
I was hoping to see this be finally settled with the Duckworth Lewis method!
This episode must have been an editing nightmare. Hat's off to the editor.
Makes sense that Waluigi would be a consistent runner with his long legs. Good show from him, and a brilliant last try from Aloy. But the Nook was just too much to handle.
I had the most distressing feeling of deja vu reading this, like all this has happened before.
but ye those legs do be working for waluigi.
The three 6's in a row were impressive
In the grand tradition of OX doing sport things, I went into this knowing nothing about cricket and somehow came out knowing even less xD
Luke and Ellen's ancestors must be screaming at them from the grave when they said " it's like baseball".
In fairness it is the most similar game to explain to americans
Which is just rounders with more organ music.
@@geraintthomas4343 Exactly, someone throws a ball, someone tries to hit it as far as possible, then runs around to score points while the other team tries to get the ball back to a certain point. Conceptually quite similar, though baseball is a mere shadow to cricket's imperial glory ;)
Luke's incredulous tone when he asks "Tom Nook can be stopped?" I assume he means in general and not just cricket.
Used to play this at school using pencils with the paint scraped off. Also, Cricket is like baseball in the same way that Michaelangelo's David is like a Euro '96 bobblehead of Paul Gascoigne.
Anyone who derides baseball as a childs' game _and expects that to enrage a baseball fan--_ doesn't know baseball.
As someone who knows nothing about sports but a decent amount about art I want to thank you for using an analogy that I can understand 🙏🏻
@@BogeyTheBear They're both children's games. Cricket is just a better children's game. (The fact that the US plays baseball is entirely the MCC's fault anyway.)
@@flurglhinge3051 I'm not sure who MCC is, but no, the US plays baseball because they invented it, and men that played pickup games as kids started leagues as adults in the mid 1800s, and with that it expanded in popularity.
@@flurglhinge3051 wait what did the Melbourne cricket club do?!
You guys can make a paint drying RPG look fun and exciting :D
As promised I learned absolutely nothing about cricket
Well I was reminded that breaking for "tea" in between innings is a very important part of any cricket match!
@@danielharvison7510 not just between innings but tea every evening for test matches
@@kaushtubhchauhan I think also between deliveries and runs is fair too. Maybe in the middle of a delivery or while someone is on strike!
(Ultimate British Commonwealth moment)
As a big fan of cricket, I am SO pleased that a tabletop game involving cricket exists! Thanks Producer Jon and your Dad!
There is an irl cricket tournament that is trying to encourage more people to play and watch cricket in towns and cities in the Uk, and that tournament is called The Hundred. My Mum and I don't watch all the matches, but some of them are exciting and the rules are similar to the Test Match, T20 and ODI (One Day International) formats.
If Owzthat! was revived with The Hundred or IPL (Indian Premier League) etc in mind, then perhaps a new generation of cricket and tabletop fans could enjoy learning and playing it? My family and I would. ^o^
Never I've been this excited and on the edge of my seat for something I didn't understand nor had any idea on what I was supposed to be imagining
"i haven't got a coin" the delivery was perfect lmao.
what a wonderful start to the show.
This show of the weekend hit me in the nostalgia, still got my game of Owzthat, from grandad after a cricket match, good to know that someone else has heard of it
I can't overstate how excited I am to finally see cricket being covered by Oxtra. Thank you, Jon!
I imagine Cloud would be good a cricket as his sword looks like a cricket bat.
One of the most amazing things about Outside Xtra's Show of the Weekend is how it celebrates gaming as a whole. These other types of games they play may not be video games (although they are often related) but they are still fun in the way that video games are because they are the roots of what became video games as technology evolved.
I have no idea whats happening but dice rolling is always fun!
Show of the weekend has turned from a video game focused show to pokemon magazine, dice games and choose your own adventure books
I wouldn’t have it any other way, you guys are amazing lmao
Luke being a great captain tactically keeping the bar low so the rest of his team don't feel as pressured 🤫
Charmy Bee hooray my favourite Sonic character so awesome! :D
I can just picture Espio calmly explaining the rules to Vector over secret agent videophone, so Vector who is in the audience can then be slightly confused and confidently explain the wrong rules to Charmy, who then just forgets them anyway, starts flying around randomly and caught the ball once because it seemed fun. :)
Congratulations Luke, champion despite having that absolute liability Luke Bowlin' Westaway in your team!
The only thing I love as much as Oxboxtra, is cricket
I was born for exactly this crossover.
Now to watch as Luke and Ellen show their deep understanding of the intricacies of the game....
Nook really rode his luck for that century.
Don't see how charmy bee still gets in the side.
But Link/Doom Guy and Gwyn are inspired selections
Cricket is not for the upper echelons!
Watch Freddie's Field of Dreams
The kids stories are amazing, especially Adnans
This very simple game actually does quite a good job of representing the build of pressure and excitement of cricket.
Watching the required run rate creep up as wickets keep falling.
Having a review overturned at a critical moment
No drama like it
A nice friendly game of dice cricket
With the bats & the ball & the wicket
Tom Nook is a beast
Ellen's team were all fleeced
There's no doubt she'll tell Luke where to stick it
Brilliant!
Producer John has had enough of POkemon Magazine and has finally snapped...
Isn't Pokemon published monthly anyways?
Luke's unbridled confidence - "who am I bowling out?"
It is not lost on me that Producer Jon is wearing a baseball cap.
I genuinely screamed when I saw this because oxtra has now included the trifecta of my personal interests: cats (just eternal), opera (first episode of S2 blades in the dark) and cricket (this blessed day). I cannot be happier.
In the immortal words of Raphael: "Cricket? Nobody understands cricket. You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket."
I know what a crumpet is but don’t understand cricket 🏏 other than it not being like rounders/baseball like Ellen and Luke joked
I have no idea what was going on during this entire episode, but I'm glad you all had fun, from the looks of it.
Gone Full Cream Tea [Idiom]
A phrase used to describe someone who believes unshakeably that they are someone they aren't.
Actually gets really entertaining and dramatic as it goes on.. Great work Prod John!
John professing his love for cricket while wearing a Yank hat makes my American heart smile. You don't have to talk about baseball, but we all know it's better.
As an American... we are the only nation to create a game that is somehow more boring to play than watch in baseball.
WImbledungeons Mk. 2! I love those hexagonal dice, really interesting take on numbers from 1-6. Would be interesting to see these used in other TTRPGs :D
edit: maybe not, the dice kinda act up when they brush up against something lol
This is also called "pencil cricket", which kinda gives away the origin of them. Scrape the paint off a pencil and carve in the sides. This is just a specially manufactured version.
@@DrBrangar Ah, I see, someone commented further down that they would do this with pencils, so I thought it was just the kids' way of making these "dice" lol, turns out the dice evolved from the pencils, that's pretty cool!
They did better when they rolled them harder, I think, so they deliberately bounced off the end and came to a start, rather than stopping against the barrier... Agree that it's a very neat shape, I'd never seen the pencil version, I feel like I've missed out!
Yes Jon, yes! If Mike can get Luke in to F1 maybe you can get Ellen in to cricket 🏏!
One of us! One of us!
As a lover of cricket, this was both painful and brilliant to watch! A great SoTW!
Yay show of the weekend.
Best way to start my day off.
And ellens back and looking healthy.
All is right with the world
The creators of those dice had to have designed it with poker tables in mind, there is no way that was played without 3/4 of the time people chasing the cylinders on the floor.
Dang, especially the beginning of the video was so refreshingly competitive, I had to watch it twice. Well done, and always a good time when producer Jon is partaking in the video action :D
I especially want to say how I very much appreciate your editing in the video for every dice roll. Your willpower is beyond comprehension!
A fun video! (More fun than actual cricket) Amazing how the Xtra team can make simple things entertaining.
Just like Luke gaining new respect for Luigi after playing Mario + Rabbids, I have a newfound respect for Tom Nook after that stellar performance in that match! Man of the match right there!
Even though this ended up being a video of Ellen and Luke rolling dice for 20+ minutes, it still ended up becoming one of my favorite show of the weekend episodes. Just shows these two can somehow make even dice rolling entertaining!
Tom Nook in his age still destroys the game! What a beast!
I swear I'd liked this video when I first saw it... Ah, no matter - happy to relike!
This was really charming and I love how at the start Luke and Ellen seem so uncertain of how much they'll love this game (me, too, watchin' along); but 11min in, we're all deeply invested.
This was really cool, and it's always a treat to see Producer John! I really enjoy when you guys play board games!
When I saw the thumbnail my first thought was: "I always knew this day would come, Luke finally snapped and offed Ellen" 😆
This episode of Show of the Weekend was very entertaining to watch.
Watched a video about the rules of cricket last night! What perfect timing and what a fun video from the team
Loved this. I was delighted to find that Luke and Ellen know more about cricket than I, but not much more. This was fun. Thanks
I absolutely loved this!!
you know what, this is clever and easy…
and Ellen had the better team IMHO…a nice mix of speed, power, maneuverability, and intimidation
Agreed, would be interesting to shift the numbers a bit based on the team players... so someone with longer legs is more likely to get a 2-3 than a 1... strong arms is more likely to hit a 6... someone untrustworthy is more likely to get an LBW... right, let's start drawing up some character sheets.
If Ellen, Luke and Jon think I'm gonna sit here and watch them play pretend cricket by rolling dice for 23 minutes, they are GODDAMN right.
Sorry Luke, there's NO way you're going to be able to afford Tom when it's time to renegotiate his contract.
I was oddly on the edge of my seat towards the end and I didn't think I ever would be about something cricket-related.
I gotta be honest, going in to this video I wasn't very in to it. After watching it, I want to buy this game and give it a go with some friends. Very good recommendation by Producer Jon.
This video was worth it for the thumbnail alone.
'It's a lot like baseball' - that hurt me, physically. 😭
Well done for actual getting me to watch a game of cricket.
Producer Jon MVP already and i've watched 20 seconds
My two favourite things to watch are OX and cricket. I never thought I'd see the day they united. I loved it. 😭❤️
I never thought I would be so invested in a video that combined the words "cricket" and "dice" lol
As someone who's played real cricket and also Owzthat, I can vouch for this game being much more interesting to play
Neat! I have a dice game ~1900s for baseball and have no idea the mechanics of the dice game (rules of baseball, sure, but not the actually dice game rules). Cool to see this!
I have no idea what I just watched, but I love it so much!
You know it's been a great SotW when they're both just laughing at the end!
Clearly Tom Nook bribed Ellen’s team to take a dive. And obviously the real reason Link was missing from Luke’s bench is because he went off to play tennis with Ganondorf instead. 😜
It's nice to see that Luke and Ellen don't see a long barrier to feature pen and paper games on the channel. That's their position anyway.
Ellen was a bit silly mid on while Lukes performance was a bit silly mid off. Owzat for cricket puns? I'm out for a duck aren't I?
Thumbnail goals.
Great vid but one urgent question: where the hell on Luke’s team was popular character Talking Tom Jetski?
The chaotic energy that dwells within the thumbnail.
I want that dice tray so much
I just realized this show is like my Saturday morning cartoons
Who knew Tom Nook was secretly Don Bradman in disguise?
Good to see Ellen cosplaying as Batgirl.
I was wondering how Link could be in both teams, but turned out it was just tea and strawberries.
Love the thumbnail hahah
We should actually get producer Jon in on an actual DND oxventure or 2
That thumbnail makes it look like luke threw a cricket bat at ellen’s head
that laugh is incredible
Good job Producer John for keeping these fools in line, godspeed man.
It amazes me every time, how evenly matched you and luke are! You guys are always just a few points apart!
That thumbnail is a masterpiece
20:00 plays the song 'Final Girl' by Graveyardguy.
This was fun to watch
I greatly appreciate that Ellen tried to keep the Americans invested by comparing it to baseball then *immediately* used the term "jumpers".
You can get dice like that in a lot of stores. Stay away from the D20's... they are too rounded and just keep rolling. However, the D4's are the easiest to read (and the safest to step on) of any D4 I have ever seen. For everything in between, they work well enough if you want some neat looking dice in your collections.
