Ok, David, it was the first steps as a project band, they developed incredibly well, they also tried a lot of different sounds, and many styles, please take a closer look at Nemophila. What they have recently brought out meets very, very high standards

I think the rating is OK, I am definitely biased because I was lucky enough to be part of this project from the start, I had already followed Tamu's (drums) channel almost 2 years beforehand, I just hear this group differently Requirements must also be set high, they are all Japanese professional musicians, it was just a first sniff, you immediately noticed that this project was not normal or standard, the chemistry among these musicians is just great, especially in this difficult time they were able to fight their depression well!

Nemophila generally just play their videos from their tiny studio like they had played live in a pub. They leave in their mistakes. There's no pretention here. They are also doing this off their own backing without a record company contract so there's only so much cash spent on these. That's why I like this so much. It reminds me of going to lets say watch someone like ACDC back in the day in an Australian pub and see how the sound is and how many mistakes are made. Its rough, ready and live. The world needs more of this.

As a requester of That song I’m of course a little disappointed with that score. You did mention some good points which may justify such a score but let me get some things straight:
Firstly Saki ( right guitar player) is one of the most famous Japanese metal guitarists. She has an insanely good reputation especially in Japan and in the Japanese metal scene for working with her band Mary’s Blood for more than 10 years.
Moreover you didn’t get the guitars right. Hazuki, the other guitarist is using an ESP while Saki is using a Killer guitar (Killer is a Japanese company which makes high end gear for guitarists). That fact is just a little „nice- to-know thing“, not something where I’m particularly annoyed of you not knowing it.
But what I’m annoyed of is the fact that you couldn’t accept the raw, kind of muddy sound as their style and appreciate it for what it is. Not every band has the budget to afford a well experienced sound guys to work for them. They have to do everything on their own since haven’t got enough attention yet. And besides that there are many bands who could afford a better sound but don’t want to have it because it wouldn’t fit their messages or their style of music in general. If you look in some black metal you’ll find out what I mean by that.
Furthermore they’ve been only around since late 2019 and never really had a chance to prove themselves in front of an audience, this song was actually the first they wrote together as a group.
The next point I wanna mention is that, as you called it „lackluster“ head bobbing thing. Can you only imagine the power just that little move could have with a 5000 people audience doing the same movement with them? In my honest opinion it’s rather creative as they not just stand there doing nothing or put their hand in the air or something like that. They are known for their little choreographies and do it in other songs as well.
Overall I think they gonna get really big in their genre and I’m pretty sure they’ll develop pretty fast because that’s what they did so far. They went from a small jamming group which covered famous tracks to a full grown band which has the potential (at least in my opinion) to get as big as Lovebites, Band maid and even Babymetal.
But never the less I once again really liked your honesty even though it wasn’t the result I was hoping for. So I apologize in advance if something I said comes across as rude or anything like that. I love your work and the content you create. And besides the score I’m really thankful that you reacted to one of my favorite bands. Keep on being awsome🤘🤘

I think you made some fair criticisms, but I also think you were a little bit rough on them. I can't speak for them, but I do think a lot of what you picked out was intentional, including the muddy guitar sound. I just think Saki and Hazuki are too good generally (they are pretty much note for note on every single cover they've done) for it to be sloppy playing. Mayu's vocals have gotten better since this recording, I think she was feeling out the screaming here (I believe here previous band Lipstick were more of a glam rock style, so the screaming is a more recent development. Anyone who knows more about Lipstick can probably tell you more/correct me if I'm wrong) and she's super impressive these days. Also, not the same guitars. The editing is a little weird through the twin solo section, but they switch back and forth between the parts. With all that said, they've only been doing this band (all having come from other projects) for a couple of years and this was their first single. A lot of people probably prefer some of their other songs, but I think this is still my favourite. I hope you check out some more off their stuff cause they're honestly awesome and are gonna be massive if they stay together (this was a side project for them after all and Saki is still very active with Mary's Blood, so who knows if they'll keep going). Keep rocking man 🤘

      [ czcams.com/video/19VQ9tkWksQ/video.html ]
The difference between 2 years to me is them learning to play with one another and trust each other musically. Individually they're all powerhouses, but early on their sound wasn't always one-unit cohesive - but I think that's normal in any new arrangement. Listening to the progression of their early covers, Oiran, Fighter, Monsters, Life, and Dissension - and now this live performance... You can see the progress, and I'm excited for what more they can bring in the time to come.
IMO, Nemophila has surpassed each of these ladies previous (or current) engagements in other bands. I hope they're in it for the long-haul and do a US tour before I'm too old to go :)

I really appreciate the honest reaction. This was in their rehearsal space a couple of years ago. It's not 100% polished. But to me, I felt honesty in that. Like: "Hey, we got this new band together and we can't wait to show it off!". And yes, I think the blocking bit was intentional...a little tongue in cheek attitude. There is a stage version of this song they just dropped recently. And I gotta say, these ladies' stage presence is off the charts! Or if you want check out a professionally produced music video, try "Raitei", or their latest, "Dissension". I think these girls are going places! A quick note on the guitars from a guitarist. Hazuki (screen left) is playing a custom ESP M-7 FR (she has since landed an endorsement with Ibanez). Saki (screen right) is playing her own signature model Killer guitar called "The Empress". Killer is a brand started by Loudness guitarist, Akira Takasaki, and they're only available in Japan. They're built and distributed by ESP, which would explain why they look so similar. Looking forward to the next one.

Hazuki and Saki do not have the same guitars, but these are similar - Killer and ESP aren't so far apart seeing as ESP owns Killer. The blocking was clearly deliberately over "cool" - these girls are ALL energy and know how to have fun. Mayu, the vocalist has, worked her ass off in the last 18 months to be awesome, and it shows. This is their first original release...
The other criticisms here just make you sound a bit blowhard. This was is an early one-take studio live from a band that isn't signed and was barely even a band at the time. I suppose J-Metal fans knew of Saki, Tamu and Hazuki before they even listened to this first track, and consequently knew what they were all capable of, and understood the context of this MV better than virgin listeners.

    @steveratcliffe2181 Před 3 lety +5

You got it DH. They do have better sounding songs. The sound on this one is a bit thin I would go with Ratei official MV, Monsters or Life. Dissension is their most popular and heavy song. They just released an album collection of their originals, Oiran included, and the sound is so much thicker and better. What I love about this band is their diversity and their comradery as seen in the song Life. They truly care for each other. Heavy as hell but smile all the time. This is my favourite of the Japanese bands but I totally get your score

The timing of your reaction is a little unfortunate as they just at the beginning of the month released a much more recent live version of this same song from the NaonYaon festival in May of this year (though between the ongoing pandemic and bad weather at the outdoor venue actual in person attendance was very low, but it was simultaneously live streamed to thousands all over the world). But given your lead time on these reactions you had probably already recorded this (of course since you probably also had a link to this specific version there's a good chance you still would have done this version).
This was just their second video and first original song back in February 2020 - a week or two prior they had uploaded an Iron Maiden cover of the Trooper - although they were all veterans of other bands they were new to playing with each other and definitely still feeling each other out - this was also supposed to just be a side project for a little fun that they were funding themselves but their You Tube videos blew up beyond their wildest expectations and they ended up spending the pandemic putting out a ton of content on their own channel both covers and original songs, three self funded EPs of original material you can buy off their web page (think they still aren't signed to a Japanese label although they did recently sign with British based but Japanese focused label JPU records for a European release gathering all their previous releases into a single CD with English translations of the lyrics), 4 solo live stream "concerts" and 2 collaborative live streams with other bands under the NaonYaon banner (a long standing annual festival dedicated to all-female Japanese artists, mostly but not exclusively rock). At this point they have a strong potential to go massive with the only possible impediment being what happens if Saki (the guitarist with the shorter reddish hair in this video) is forced to choose between Nemophila and her long standing band Mary's Blood (she is still active in both, while the others at this point are primarily dedicated to Nemophila - the other guitarist Hazuki and the drummer Tamu also have other side projects but not near the level of commitment Saki has to Mary's Blood).
Anyway, my original point - they were still very new to each other and a bit raw here - in the intervening year and a half they've gotten a lot tighter as a group and also the production values on their videos a lot more polished (and they now have a much larger and nicer performance space) - they are also a band who is always clearly having fun (the rhythm section has been nicknamed by the fanbase as "Laughing Thunder") without talking themselves too seriously - that newer live version of Oiran has a lot more energy and polish to it so you might find it worthwhile just to check it out to see how much you think they've improved (now that you already know the song) - in terms of reaction hopefully they'll make additional appearances with their more recent material (their covers are loads of fun as well - last Halloween they did one of Detroit Rock City where they all put on the KISS makeup which you might get a kick out of).

    @hiawatha.g Před 3 lety +2

Appreciate the effort you put in to make a detailed review. Personally, this is NOT the one I would have started with. It's their first original MV, before they even knew if they were going to form a permanent group. The blocking that you found lackluster was deliberate--they were just having a joke and threw it in for laughs. If you see more of their stuff, you'll see. This is probably THE new metal band to watch. They just started in 2019 and are blowing up fast. They were founded in 2019. They are a supergroup composed of:
    Mary's Blood guitarist Saki
    ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu
ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki (also plays with Lisa-X)
    ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and
ex-Soramimi drummer Muratatam (also does other projects)
Initially, they were just a side project, co-organized Mayu with some help from Saki. They started off posting metal covers of well-known rock, pop and metal songs. Then they began posting originals, starting with “Oiran”.
The viral reaction seems to have convinced them they were onto something potentially big, so they’ve been putting a lot more work into it, including some successful live-streams and an appearance at the annual Japanese female rock festival NAONのYAON. They tend toward hard and heavy, but also do ballads and some pop covers. Drummer Murata Tamu took time off to give birth to her son, and on her return, the rest of the bandmembers gave her a welcome back that resulted in an extremely moving moment captured on live stream: “Life” czcams.com/video/HFnEYhbEAqg/video.html
After Oiran, others to check (if you haven’t already) include "Dissension", which will fry whatever is left of your circuits: czcams.com/video/26aMuahxz8c/video.html and “Raitei”, which means “Thunder” in Japanese, and yes, they bring the thunder: czcams.com/video/lh-dVLKP314/video.html
Saki is the only one who had been with a breakout band before (Mary’s Blood); Hazuki and Murata-tamu are also considered elite musicians and have worked with a lot of other top artists. Hara-san is the youngest but is clearly a great talent and has been developing in front of our eyes. And of course Mayu is quickly establishing herself as a one of the world’s best metal vocalists.

Hey David. I really like and enjoy your channel but I think you're waaaaay off on this one. However you're only partially to blame. First of all 'Oiran' was a bad choice to start with. Especially the version you watched. It would've been smarter to go with 'Sorai', 'Monsters' or 'Raitei' before moving on to 'Dissension'. Secondly my impression is that the vids they post from their tiny rehearsal space are naturally (and intentionally) low-fi video- and audiowise. This rendition of 'Oiran' particularly suffers from those circumstances since it was one of their very virst vids. Therefore they weren't yet accustomed to each other the way they are now and their setup was probably a tad simpler than it most likely is now. Anyway, make sure to give Nemophila another shot by checking out the aforementioned songs (preferably in the order I mentioned them). Take care.

I think this was actually live in the studio. And the blonder guitarist Hazuki (under the radar awesomeness) has a new Ibanez (oops, this is her ESP before going wyIbanez), while the denim-skirted one has her “Killer” guitar, although the angles (&tons of mirrors!) made it hard for me too. I Think both of her (Saki, skirt, darker hair) B strings are out? Yet I also wonder if they’re winded because they’d done umpteen takes? (But then I’d expect tuning.) the drummer is really in demand, one of my favs, and I think this is the one she did only weeks before giving birth! And I’m thinking the blocking was developed that day in the previous takes, but they’ve kept it ((and styled another video after it, Dissension, their best MV).
For another listen, check Oiran onstage livestream from April (a year later). Not more mud, heavier, own the stage, and despite a peep of vocal tracks & weak low notes, she still kills the vocals czcams.com/video/19VQ9tkWksQ/video.html
And their least heavy song could be on any rock radio, just constant hooks, tons of emotion, set to a different livestreams vid, when the baby had just come and Hazuki had a birthday, their song Life clearly got to them, reeaaalllly good czcams.com/video/HFnEYhbEAqg/video.html

I think the drummer was pregnant when they shot this video and had gone on maternity live shortly after. If you look into the history and activity of this VERY new band, with the hiatus of their drummer and the restrictions of these times you will see they have achieved much is such a short period of time. Some members in this band share something in common with Lovebites, lineage from Destrose (which is like the Yardbirds of female JMetal, like a band where talent passed through). This is a very early version of Oiran, test run the version on their livestreams and officially released version is different.
I think it was filmed in the Drummer's practice studio.
This was one their usual goofing around videos, the drummer and bass player is always smiling laughing throughout the video. With the rapid pace they put out new videos (especially the English language cover) it very unlikely they spend much time together rehearsing, considering the singer does not speak any English and Saki (Guitar) has to coach her through every word, one syllable at time.

7.2 is fair considering your points and I fully agree with your assessments as this recording is somewhat 'during the beginning' of their project... and that's why they are re-doing all previous recordings for their next upcoming worldwide release full-length first album next month. NEMOPHILA is growing on me pretty fast while covering all their singles as well as classic metal covers.
Also you are totally on point about Haraguchi-san (bassist) and Tamu Murata (drummer); so far along their set list, I am impressed with them both -hit the spot everytime whenever required and are critical with the overall flow as far as the melodic continuity are concerned. You could also catch the glimpse of the 'communication hints' between them which shows that they have great understanding and connections to communicate like that while playing intensively. All the band members experience as an individuals are vast and collectively could be recognized as the veteran quintet in Japan rock/metal scene. You should continue to check out other stuffs from them. With their attitude and approach for what they think they could deliver as a unit, I believe they would become one of the best metal band in the future.

Definately a fair review. You got some valid points and thank you for explaining. IMO the reason for them is that (as others have said it earlier) they are a practically new band came together as a side project in late 2019 and this is one of their first original releases. Each member comes from a different band (guitarist Saki for example plays in Mary's Blood too ) These projects in rehearsal studio are self founded. A bit bizarre but I think of it this way: They came together for some " afternoon jam session" had a lot of fun (you can' t miss the smiles on the faces of the bassist and drummer) and made awesome music in the process. One thing I disagree with you is the "headbobbing" or whatever. That's a pretty much Japanese thing and was probably intended this way They don't take themselves seriously either. For their KISS cover they even put up the makeup too :D
Hope you check out more of their stuff. (MV-s too) If you have Dissension (their heavyest song so far) or Ratei in the que then I'm already satisfied. Keep in mind that with this line up they haven't got the chance to play in front of real live audience yet. (F*** you covid :p )
Also for comparison they have a "live version" of Oiran. big stage but no audience (only crew) due to the pandemic. (uploaded about 2 weeks ago so probably wasn't available when you recorded your reaction.) They improved much and became one of my favorite J-metal bands.. Keep up the good work 🤘

But, as a band, they are pretty new even though they all have years of experience. And this performance didn't quite work for me. But, as you also did, I hear the potential. And they have really started to fulfill that potential. Dissension is a killer track and one can hear the band has really come together. I'm still a little unsure of the euphony of the guitar solo lead-in on Dissension, but the rest is fantastic. And Mayu's vocals are super good. As always the rythm section is beyond rock solid.
BTW, I just watched your first Babymetal reaction. Nemophila does a really good cover of Babymetal's Megitsune. Worth a listen, after hearing the original, even if you don't do a reaction/review.

Like others have said, I respect your honesty. I still don't hear any lack of breath stamina from mayu however. I think they did really good since at this early point they had gathered as studio musicians so mayu could sing her lyrics to music someone else wrote. I don't think they were considering being an actual long-term band when they through this on CZcams for grins.
You should give two more songs a shot. I suggest you listen to Monsters since the music was written by one of the members (Saki) and it is my favorite. The second should be their cover of Iron Maiden's Aces High which shows their personalities and talent and was my introduction to the band. This old guy got a little misty eyed over how well they did that song, especially mayu.

    Recomendation for japanese bands:
Any Unlucky Morpheus song in "Change of Generation" album.
Dir en Grey: Different Sense, Hageshisa to, Kono Mune no Naka or any song of their prog era.
Babymetal: Arkadia or Kagerou (with band intro).
Sigh: Aletheia (this band was very important for the symphonic and avant-garde black metal scenes).

Hey are you in for a rough ride as Nemophila is the "hot new band" everyone is going crazy over. Their sound ...not sure Saki (Mary's Blood and one of the premier guitarist period) is in this side project with these other great musicians. These jam sessions are the best they can do with the lock down (just got out recently so we'll see how they do with a crowd but each of them have been battle tested for years). I am like you some of their stuff I like some is blah, I think in fairness they are still trying to find the niche that will define this band, they have all come from other great bands so I know what they can do. Maybe they are still 'getting a feel for one another'. I would be less harsh and a little more patient and frankly this song is not one I would recommend as an intro to the band at least not this version. Anyway, when the pitchforks stop stabbing and everyone calms down lets try another round, the talent in this band is top notch so I think it is still a matter of finding their groove. The track record on these musicians individually is too impressive to be this low a score, however, together maybe they need more time and it is still a "side project" for most of them although they really want to make this band a force to be dealt with. I remember early AC/DC was very raw, I loved that about them and many of Nemophila fans seem to like that too about them so let's see where they go and another shot is well deserved when all your wounds are healed (LOL)!!!!!

If they're gonna be mad at me for being honest, then they clearly don't belong on this channel....as I will always be honest with my reactions and my opinions. If they wanna get all hurt over my honest opinion, then the door is over there and they can see themselves out. It's just a shame they can't appreciate me giving my honest and real opinion....not like all those other "reactors" out there who "love" everything they hear.

Lovebites has set a rather high standard with their recent live releases. But they have a big label who invests in them, the older live recordings had sound problems, too. And not to forget, FOAK was released in the 4th year of the band's existence with an obvious effort in budget and rehearsal. Oiran is more like a jam session of musicians who also have other engagements, released when the band hadn't even played a year together.

Saki and Tamu are very good live, but Mayu and Hazuki do not sound so good, Mayu is very new and with Nemophila she explores her vocal style a lot and that sometimes costs her, Hazuki is another studio guitarist since she was in Disqualia she was not the best in the live ones and they have a lot of quite notable flaws, Haraguchi a little regular but he does it well.

    • @MrSeriyokuzenyo

Asami from Lovebites was an R and B singer when she joined Lovebites, and now she is very comfortable reaching new limits with more power and endurance. Bassist Haraguchi seems to start laughing as Mayu starts to scream. Maybe it is an inside joke about Mayu's fails in early screaming. They called their JPU ep compilation "Oiran Extended Edition" for a reason. How you're so "sure they'd be the first to agree" that it's "not their best song" is beyond me. Also, the Trooper and Oiran are mixed the same, from the same session, Saki just switched to a 7-string for Oiran and they're playing dirtier, full chords, double bass, it's heavier and filthier and way more aggressive because that's the style of the song, whereas The Trooper's supposed to be a clean and faithful Maiden cover.
