The person who arranged this is Rob Mathes, he's also on the backup acoustic guitar on stage. He wrote all the music for the choir too. I was part of the choir for this performance and let me tell you, it was one of the greatest moments of my life. The person who produced this was Legendary Hollywood producer George Stevens Jr.

No joke, this has to be up there as one of the greatest performances EVER. Think about it, they're playing one of the greatest rock songs of all time, by one of the greatest bands ever, while among the crowd are the members of said band, the President of the US, and goodness knows who else (there were a lot of celebs in those crowd shots) and they absolutely KILLED it. The Wilson sisters are LEGENDS in their own right, no doubt about it.

I am shocked that you didn't recognize that drummer. That is Jason Bonham, the son of the late great Bonzo. I've watched this performance easily 100 times, and that dust storm comes up every single time. Personally, I give this performance an 11 out of 10. Just the fact that they performed one of the most iconic songs by one of the most iconic bands, in front of said iconic band, and to do it so flawlessly, I can't knock any part of it.

There is also another version of the video that is edited a bit differently and announces Jason as the son of John Bonham performing on the drums. This wasn't his first time performing together with Heart, so there is some history there. Also, Robert, Jason's godfather, and band had invited Jason to attend with them, but he had to decline due to another prior engagement. He just didn't inform them that prior engagement was to be there performing this song with Heart using his Dad's drum kit in their honor. Surprise! So many reasons this performance will bring a tear to your eye everytime. I love this reaction. As a lover of great music, rock history and heritage and such a legendary band and song, I would have been disappointed had you not had such a heartfelt reaction. I like knowing that there are others out there it is just as meaningful too. ❤👍🤘✌️

Another fun fact, the full choir, we were actually singing the whole performance, as soon as those 10 choir members appeared on stage, the full choir was singing along with them, but we kept it nice and muted so that it would hide the number of voices, until the end of the guitar solo, which I'm sure you noticed that some of the guitar notes from the original song are being done by The Choir

The tears were mainly, I think, because Robert had asked Jason to join them that night but Jason declined saying he had a prior engagement. The shock when they saw him on the drums just added to the emotion. By the way, Jason's bowler wasn't just a tribute to his Dad, the hat was Bonzos actual hat. The kit Jason was playing was one of his Dad's too.

I was at The Scorpions gig at The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in '99 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fall of the wall. The electric guitar was by Shane Fontayne who has toured with just about everybody including backing Stephen Stills on a CSN tour right around this same time. He has led the Kennedy Center Orchestra during several of these honors. I'm sure you've realized that the drummer was Jason Bonham, son of John. Saw an interview a few years later with Ann and Nancy in which they said they were in the midst of a tour in Florida. The Center sent a plane to fly them from Miami to Washington the day before the actual show so they could rehearse with all of the elements the KC had added. They rehearsed for one hour, then flew back to Miami for that night's show and then back to Washington for the final show, then back to Miami for their next show. Ann said she was so exhausted that the performance was on pure adrenaline.

Fourth, Ann Wilson's voice rising above what looks to be a 100 person choir. Fifth, Nancy Wilson, as we all know is not only a crazy good guitarist, but also a hell of a vocalist. It is just as good everytime I see it. The original Seattle rockers, the Wilson sisters, killed it. Jason Bonham playing his dad's drum set & bowler (his appearance here was a surprise to his late dad's bandmates, catching everyone, esp. Plant, in the gut) & that last reveal of the bowler wearing choir is like unveiling the missing member - that & Jason looking to the heavens near the end, bring on the tears everytime. It is s musical & emotional master class. Great reaction. I can't even think of who could have covered this properly after seeing Ann, Nancy & Jason taking the helm. I saw Led Zeppelin perform April 8, 1970 in Dorton Arena, Raleigh, NC. I was 17 and that was best concert to this day I ever saw. That puts them above Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers Band, Jethro Tull and many others. Watching this amazing video did bring tears to my old eyes.

I enjoyed watching your reaction. Most reactors dont pay attention to the background. Heart has always been amazing with their live shows. You will never forget them. The night after this Led Zeppelin went on David Letterman and said this was their favorite cover ever. They dont usually like when people cover it. You could have gone all the way back to the beginning for all I care. This is the song that you can never hear too much.

Ann knocked this cover out of the park, it still blows my mind all these years after. Notice that woman in the long hair in the audience rocking to it is Bonnie Rait. Kudo's to Jason playing his Dad's drum line for this song wearing his hat.

This deserved a perfect 10 -- I don't see how it could have been better. This is IMHO the greatest cover of ANY classic rock song ever. Yes, I have teared up every time that I have seen this video (at least 2 dozen times). I wish this had been released as a single -- I have little doubt that it would have been a #1 song. Fun fact: the original was never released as a single back in the 70s, so it never qualified for the Hot 100 -- it too would have been a #1 song.

Got a subscribe from me for both picking up on all the layers as they came in on your first listen (there's a lot of them) and for being honest with your emotions. Hard to not get emotional on this one -- Plant, Page and Jones having to sit there and be honored, seeing Jason Bonham absolutely kill it playing for his dad and in front of his godfather (Robert Plant) and the men who raised and mentored him. Lot of emotion just on the context. And then Ann Wilson starts signing and kills it all the way through, the arrangement, the musicianship. I have to imagine for Led Zeppelin this is like seeing your daughter come out for the ball dressed like Cinderella. So many versions of this song and all are less than the original, but this version stands beside it IMO, And all of it done live without effects, Unbelievable performance. Thanks for your review!

Plant never liked it when some other bands covered this song.....until this performance but a lot of the tears are coming from the fact that John Bonham’s son Jason is on the drums which belong to Bonham and he was wearing his dads Bowie had. Which was his dads favorite hat. That’s also the reason you see them get all excited when they opened the doors behind the orchestra. They are also wearing Bowie hats in honor of John Bonham.

Fun fact, absolutely no one knew that Jason Bonham was going to be on drums, as far as I know not even heart knew, and Led Zeppelin definitely did not know. For every rehearsal, including the dress rehearsal, some of the footage of which is in this video, Dave Grohl was on drums, and that seemed a fitting tribute, Dave Grohl is a massive Led Zeppelin fan, and has been on drums for all of the Tenacious D songs that were inspired by Led Zeppelin, but turns out he was just doing it as a stand-in for jason, and what a great guy to do so

  • @SuperMoofie

Ann also picks up on all the tonal details and nuances in the phrasing. In some parts she almost sounds like Robert Plant as she emphaises certain syllables just the way he did, honoring the original song, yet still with her infusion. Wow, just fantastic is this tribute, it'll become legendary, where everything just came together even better than perfect.

  • @bloodybutunbowed291

    A couple things...
I hit "like" before the intro "harumphs" were finished!!!
If you can bring a tear to Robert Plant's eye while covering one of their songs you know..."It'll get ya there!"
Spending 24mins listening to a reaction to one song is the definition of "at my leisure".
That is Jason Bonham (John's son) playing drums FYI...so that's pretty special.
