From Franc: Miyako is not smiling? Miyako not moving? Ah, ah, the real deal!
Who remembers the fierce and scathing criticism of Robert Fripp, because as a prog rock guitarist (and what a guitarist!) He always sat on a bar stool and did not emit any expression on his face instead of jiggle on stage ...
When we see RF's immense career today, we say to ourselves that he was right ...

Miyako on the Dean guitar is known as the "Ice Queen" by the fan base for her general dead pan expression. It's a little bit unfair because she is not really as emotionless as people sometimes think. She's just a shy, introspective sort of person. Nobody, however, can deny her passion for her music. She does the lion's share of the song writing for the band and she's a phenomenal musician.. She's a classically trained pianist as well and classical musicians tend to let the music speak for itself. That grand piano to her left is not just there for show. If you think she's got chops on the guitar wait until she rips loose on that baby!

  • @JFrancoDrums
    @JFrancoDrums Před 3 lety +23

Hey David, i really enjoyed your reaction! Miho the bassist is the best headbanger in the business! Try not to pause in middle of the solos, it breaks the flow and they very often do long back to back solos, amazing stuff.
As to Miyako (black hair guitar) thats just how she is, shy. Watch any video of her on her channel, she smiles, goofs around, just like the rest of us, but on stage shes more introverted than the rest.
To get your mind blown over and over again check out next - Break the Wall, Hammer of Wrath, Edge of the World, Swan Song, all LIVE! (avoid Bloodstock videos, bad audio mix)
They sing in English, so use subtitle whenever possible, they have fantastic lyrics.

I see myself in you! In e few weeks I had ordered all discography, including EPs. Both CDs and vinyls. And Blurays. It doesnt matter what album this song is from, since all three albums are incredible. You just cant buy anything wrong, that is labeled Lovebites. You get powermetal, classic heavy metal or real thrash. The girls are big fans of the classic bands wich you can hear. Plus some extra spice with piano sometimes. Miyako, the non smiler is an amazing pianist too.
Its funny with Miyako, since people often comment her, because she doesnt show anything on stage. Probably because she is a pro, that must do everything perfect. Off stage she smiles a lot though.. =) I have been annoyed to see her too...but just had to accept it. Anyway, there are songs with much more stage action than here! Midori to the left can be quite crazy sometimes. My fav is probably Haruna on drums. Probably the tiniest drummer in the world (4' 6", from what I read). She is a monster, with the cutest smile =)

Miyako doesn't smile, she doesn't have to. She does play a mean guitar, and a mean piano, sometimes at the same time. Like seriously, one hand on the keys and the other on the fretboard. She also writes most of this stuff. And actually I lied, she does smile. Sometimes. But she's icy cool, Midori's the extrovert. They have some fun songs where they move around a lot, and they have some songs where they're obviously concentrating on what they're playing and so they aren't running around so much. Keep in mind they're all wearing heels, and the skill level on display is somewhat higher than a band like KISS, who can jump around all they like in their 7-inch platforms while they're playing without messing up a single one of their three chords. Speaking of Midori, you paused it right in the middle of her solo, that's a rookie mistake, what the hell? OK, you're forgiven, this time. Lovebites kick ass.

Great and informative reaction you'll find on their albums tbey play several sub genres of metal , power metal, thrash metal , power ballads , heavy rock and sometimes this can be structured all into one song . They use huge structures in their music . The opening song from the Dvd you just reacted to Thunder Vengance and Break the Wall are good examples of thier thrash side . They do move about the stage a lot more as this show goes on . I have the DVD and they really have fun with a song called Raise Some Hell . They have only been together since 2016 and have released 2 EP's and 3 full albums Awakening from the Abyss, Clockwork immorality and Electric Pentagon . Their influences are from 80's metal and they debuted in london as for them it is the home of heavy metal . The guitarists you noticed not moving about alot Miyako is a classically trained pianist from the age of three and only took up guitar when she turned 18 for me she v lets her music do the talking . She is one of the main song writers in the band . They all contribute to the song writing though . for instance Miho the bass player came up with the riff for thunder vengance after seeing a Slayer concert . The drummer Haruna is a pocket rocket she's a tiny 4 ft 9 but a giant behind the drums . The other guitarist Midori is a mad shredder and really interacts with the crowd as this show goes on . As ive said I have the DVD's of this show 5 of a kind and also Daughters of the Dawn not a bad song on any of them . Great reaction again and thanks from a fan from Downunder.

One more comment....I was also like you on my first viewing regarding why Miyako was not smiling. Since that time, I've learned so much about the band and each member individually and I am at peace with Miyako's stage presence....in fact; instead of questioning whether she actually enjoys being on stage...I now revel in her intensity and find her stage presence "perfect" for her, for me!

Welcome to the world of Lovebites. They reeled me in about 9 months ago and I can't stop listening to them. You have just scratched the surface of how good they really are. They come at you on so many different levels. As you listen to more of their songs, you will hear traditional 80s heavy metal, thrash metal, and power metal. I am blown away at how they will transition from these different styles during songs. A perfect example of this is the song Break The Wall. Miyako (She doesn't have to smile. Her guitar playing does all the smiling for her), is a master songwriter, lyricist, and of course, guitarist. The guitar playing by both of them is off the charts great. I always considered Dave Murray/Adrian Smith and KK Downing/Glen Tipton the best of the best with dual guitar playing. I put Miyako and Midori right there with them. And Haruna, the drummer, is a 4'9" giant behind the kit. Her tempos during most songs are nothing short of amazing. I cannot say enough good things about these gals. I honestly believe they are the best metal right now. If you are going to go down the rabbit hole of Lovebites, be prepared to not come back out.

You're being thrown off by them wearing white and looking elegant.. you're supposed to be thrown off! That's the point! They wear white and dresses for three reasons:
    1. So they can be seen. I want to say that Midori (guitarist playing the purple ESP-II) is the tallest of the ladies, at 5'3", while Haruna (drummer) is 4'9"! If they wore black or jeans like every other band, you couldn't see them in stage, and they'd get swallowed up by everything else on stage. Wearing white helps them to stand out and be seen.
    2. You don't have to dress like you just came off a construction site to play metal. They can be women, dress like women, and look elegant while playing just as good (and in a lot of people's opinions, BETTER) than other bands. They love to play hard, but like to walk around with a Louis Vuitton purse.
    3. They are being against the norm for metal in Japan. If you want to see some "normal" metal in Japan, search for "visual kei". That's some metal there. LoveBites goes a completely different direction with how they look. They are Japan's metal anti-metal response to Japanese metal.
    4. Contrary to popular (read: we in the US) belief, LoveBites did not get their name from Def Leppard. They got their name from the song "Love Bites (So Do I)", from Halestorm.
They are really good. Also, all but one of their songs are in English. If you're going down this route, I'd suggest reacting to Thunder Vengeance, Hammer of Wrath, or Breaking the Wall from this same show. Avoid everything from the Bloodstock show; the person doing the mix there needs to be hung upside down and hit with a wet noodle.

Miyako is a classic savant. Off the charts talented, lives a bit in her own universe, so the emotion comes out in the songwriting and the playing. They all have contrasting personalities--Miho is the mama bear who put the band together, Haruna is the Pocket Nuke who is totally irrepressible, Midori the master shredder and show-off, Asami the field general, and Miyako the shy genius who writes most of the music. If you want to see them run around, watch "Raise some Hell" or "We the United". They tailor their stage act to the song. In "Edge of the World" they stand rock still, because it is an anthem with a dark theme.

I'd simply like to say that when you pointed out (ACCURATELY I'd like to say) how that one chick on guitar WASN'T smiling, it's possible that maybe she knows how good she really is and for her it was essentially 'a Tuesday'.
Now I mean no disrespect to her by saying that, but rather the opposite. By that I mean she knows EXACTLY how good she is, but rather than trying to 'showboat' and steal the spotlight she's being EXACTLY like the professional musician she is and contributing to her fellow band mates. Meaning that she has NOTHING to prove to anyone else, and is not only doing her job but also actually ENJOYING the music.

"They are some of the best musicians in the world today" Agreed. 100%. No question. I even made it a point during the video how impressed I was with their musicianship, their songwriting, and their technical prowess. So that part I completely agree with you.
"They don't pretend to be something they are not !!!!!" False...unless they really are princesses, that is EXACTLY what they are PRETENDING to be. They are performing and acting out the personas that they have created. When you create a group that share a common theme, it is imperative that all members in the group adhere to the theme of the group. 4 of the girls are smiling, having a great time, and conveying that feeling to the crowd through the use of their facial expressions. One of the girls is not...and as such, she stands out from the rest. Is that a bad thing? Who's to say...after hearing about her personal persona as " The Ice Princess", it actually makes sense for her to not smile, as that is what her character calls for....which means she stayed in character really well.
As a reactor, having never seen them, experienced them, or even heard of them before...I can only form my opinion of them based on what I see and hear. I didn't know each girl had her own persona within the group theme. So she's The Ice Princess. A lot of fans filled me in on that fact. That's awesome, she did an outstanding job staying in character. For the record I never said she was doing a bad job. Quite the opposite in fact, I complimented her and the others repeatedly over and over on their musicianship, songwriting talent, and amazing technical prowess. A score of 9.3 is an EXTREMELY high score from me, and these ladies earned every tenth of a point from me.

    • @jaf7711
      @jaf7711 Před 3 lety +2

@@THEDavidHeretic For you they are pretending because they all wear white and you think they are acting as princesses. In 4 years, they have always dressed in white with different styles, in a recent show that will be released on DVD soon, they are dressed casually and elegantly in dark colors, different from what you see in this video. Does that say something? NO, they are just women who like to play heavy metal and look good anywhere, on stage and off, they have explained it in every interview they gave.
About Miyako, what character are you talking about? "The Ice Princess"? that's how some fans call her, IT´S NOT HER CHARACTER! She has a classic training, she is very humble and respectful. If 4 members smile, and she doesn't, that doesn't mean she is pretending or should do it to stand out from the rest, or do you think that all people are the same? not everyone reacts in the same way on stage. not all musicians feel or experience music in the same way. That's her personality!
For the record, I know what you said in your reaction and it seemed good to me, I know you liked the band... but those two things I don't understand.
Sorry if it's misspelled, I hope you understand, I don't speak much English.

If you see them off stage they look like a bunch of models going to a fashion show but get them on stage and no one stands taller than these women. The Ice Princess term I hate, watch her unpack her new custom Dean guitar or any other videos on her channel and that smile like the rest of the band lights up a room. As a classical trained pianist since age 3 she was taught that the instrument and the music does the presentation, she didn't pick up the guitar till she was 18 and plays this great!! You may be in for bit change in your life. Japan has had an active all-girl metal scene since at least 1981.
This is a starter list of all-female or (in two cases, mixed, female-led) metal, punk and hard-rock bands. It's mostly alphabetical, except for the first three, which are at the top of the list for historical reasons. They set the table for the explosion of Japanese female hard-rock, punk and metal bands.
Show-Ya (the original female J-metal band, founded in 1981, before Metallica-this is from their 30th (!) anniversary concert-and they are still touring): czcams.com/video/oJ_5Gv3vFjQ/video.html

Destrose (This band was never stable, but has become almost mythic in Japanese metal history, because so many great bands spun out of Destrose, including Lovebites--you will recognize the drummer and bassist): czcams.com/video/7o7fktsBwQg/video.html
Aldious (Glamorous and kick-ass rockers-one of the first generation all-girl metal bands, along with Destrose) czcams.com/video/sfkJT0rra-8/video.html
Asterism (not all female, but will melt your face off- the guitarist Haruka Noma is off the charts talented and still a teen-ager) czcams.com/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/video.html
Band-Maid (OK, there are 90+ great songs by them. Here is a live clip): czcams.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/video.html

Sonic Lover Reckless (Special project of Miyako Watanabe, one of the two insane Lovebites guitarists): czcams.com/video/DXZ-qhxd1VI/video.html
Unlucky Morpheus (Female lead (Fuki) and violin (Jill). This band is a deep well unto itself, they cross many subgenres of metal; Fuki and Jill also do other projects and Fuki is lead for at least two other bands including Doll$Boxx, above): czcams.com/video/V8i_QhOgsKw/video.html

Yeah mate they've got that effect on you when you sow them for first time. Now how you said Lovebites are formed 2016 in Tokyo from ex Destrose band members Miho the bassist and composer (she is the band leader) and Haruna the drummer (at the moment she is the female top drummer in the heavy metal) the other members are Asami the vocalist and songwriter, Midori the lead guitarist and backing vocals with the blonde hair and Miyako the other lead guitarist, pianist and composer with the black hair. Lovebites are influenced by 80s metal, they are the winners of 2018 in category for best new metal band and their last album Electric pentagram is nominated for one of the best 20 metal albums for 2020 year. Miho the bassist mentioned once in a interview- we are here to make something memorable. They have a dream to get step closer to their inspiration bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Halloween, Metallica, Slayer. They take something from the old metal and mixed with their own sound and in the end is that what we listening now. So talented. They are the best all female power metal band in the world at the moment. You have to check more songs from their last concert Five of a kind in Zepp Diversity Tokyo from this year like Thunder vengeance, Rise some hell, We the United, Shadowmaker, Break the wall, Hammer of wrath, Dancing with the devil. And there you gonna see how they perform on the stage. Enjoy it.

Uh oh, someone's bank balance is about to take a hit. Every single song they've recorded is amazing like this. I always find it odd that people criticise them for not walking around. Loads of bands are like that love and nobody seems to complain about that. There are other songs where they do use the stage more, but I don't see why that's a big deal at all. As for Miyako not smiling, as you'll undoubtedly find out, she's a classical musician who has taken up the guitar. Musicians from the classical realm are traditionally reserved on stage. It really doesn't matter when they're as good at playing the guitar, playing the piano and singing as Miyako is. It's just a different persona, like the yang to Midori, the other guitarist's yin. Check out Raise Some Hell if you want to see them using the stage more.

So you’ve been lovebitten too. Welcomed to the amazing world of Lovebites.
Lovebites is (mostly) a power metal band but they have influences from Metallica, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Slayer, Dragon Force, Gary Moore, Whitesnake, etc., and they’re developing their own style. I recommend their live performances, especially their latest concert earlier this year “Zepp Divercity, Tokyo 2020”. Other recommended live performances are “Daughters of the dawn”, “Battle in the east”, “Wacken”. Avoid “Bloodstuck” (bad audio). My song suggestions: “When destinies align”, “Hammer of wrath”, “Shadowmaker”, “Break the wall”, “Rising”, “Signs of deliverance”, “Swan song” (with classical piano), “Scream for me”, “Raise some hell”, “Under the red sky”, “Liar”, and a special mention to “Thunder vengeance” (mind blowing), “Dancing with the devil” (classic rock and bluesy vocals), “Empty daydream” (nice piano and vocals with catchy mid tempo), “Epilogue” (epic power ballad, great vocals, nice piano, scorching old school guitar solos) and “Edge of the world” (epic power ballad, nice vocals, nice guitar solos and song build up)
