Harvey Pekar, writer of the excellent "American Splendor" did it and was never invited back...ended his mainstream career until they made a movie about him. Honestly it generally resulted in being blacklisted. It was considered a sin to be "real" in television and still is. They won't let most people on live tv for that reason unless its local...even with the tape delay or these days digital delay where they can edit it on the fly. It's unheard of for a real event to transpire in the studio, that's what a studio/soundstage is, a place where you make film, not a place where you film "make." I see this all the time, people talking about how mean some guest is being treated when they came in asking for those set ups because they play dumb or act like a persecuted nerd or whatever their schtick is. Even when they later say things in interviews thats just marketing. It's all advertising a product that is available for a fee, directly or indirectly. Even when they are on the news crying about how they got treated in most cases, everything. EVERYTHING. It's not even that convincing in most cases.
