    This beautiful silver 1969 Camaro Pro-Touring car is no stranger to the V8 speed and Resto shop. The first time it visited, we disassembled the car and installed Detroit Speed mini tubs, a rear QUADRALink suspension system with a Currie 9 + rear axle, and then a Detroit Speed subframe and suspension system up front.

    We upsized the wheels with some Forgeline rollers wrapped in Toyo Tires, and added oversized Baer brakes actuated by a HydraTech hydraulic brake assist unit. The car drove and handled very well, but the owner wasn’t happy with the aggressive manners of the 540. It was a great street / strip racing engine, but it wasn’t happy doing casual weekend rides and city driving.
    He sent us the car with a new mission, keep the power but add some refinement. Make it a little more reliable and less angry without decreasing performance. This was a tall order, but modern technology provided the solution, a Chevrolet LT4 Supercharged V8 engine. Follow along as we install the 700 plus horsepower LT4 engine, high-pressure fuel system, dry sump oil system, methanol injection, a C&R cooling system, and all the electronics to make it run.

    '69 Camaros have a killer design and become great Pro Touring machines. Your build is a perfect example guys. Love the Brothers Collection videos and we feature those on our website quite often, but this series is pretty good too. Keep up the great work

    LT4 supercharger is 1.9L, same as the older LSA engines.

    I've already asked why they went from the big block to the lt4, but another question I have is, why is it so difficult to get the big block to make all that power but not always be so "angry", is it possible to get a high-hp modern big block to be more "easy going", or is there no way to make them more street friendly while making big HP?

    • @l2azorback
      @l2azorback Před 5 lety +2

      Switched to the LT4 from BBC because of drivability....The LT4 has such an amazing powerband as compared to the BBC. Not to mention gas mileage 1650rpm @ 75mph. This car has a 23.5gal tank so you can literally load up and have confidence that you won't have to stop at every gas station (unlike the BBC). The surprising benefit of the LT4 conversion, is we landed somewhere near 760hp at the crank (670rwhp), and this thing is a monster. More HP and torque than the BBC. Win-Win :o)

      @@l2azorback All true.. But I wanna know if its possible to get similar drivability out of maybe a smaller displacement supercharged big block? Because I've heard a lot about people getting 18-20mpgs from their modern BBCs, probably cruising at 1600ish rpm, or is there absolutely no way around the lesser drivability?

      @V8TV  Před 5 lety

      To answer your question, the way to make power with a naturally aspirated engine without forced induction, is by maximizing the compression and the amount of air the engine can "process". Raising the compression ratio increases the "squeeze" on the air / fuel mixture, resulting in a more powerful combustion event. This bigger boom in the engine reduces the smoothness of the cycle, and is a characteristic of an "angry" engine. Supercharged engines run at a lower compression ratio. The cam profile is also a factor, as with a high-horsepower naturally aspirated engine, the cam needs to open the valves as much as possible for as long as possible to get as much air in and exhaust out as possible. This high overlap and long duration translates to a lumpy and rough idle. Supercharger camshafts are designed to open quickly and close quickly to allow the most cylinder pressure, and the result is a far smoother idle and engine. SO, you certainly can reduce the compression and cam profile to make the naturally aspirated big block less angry, but you sacrifice the power. Keep in mind that the supercharger forces air and fuel in, making the displacement of the engine seem far bigger than it is.

    • @V8TV
      @V8TV  Před 5 lety

      It's hard... part of the inefficiency of big blocks is the large crank and rod journal sizes that create internal friction and drag. You can supercharge one for sure, but a small displacement big block will make less power than a comparable sized supercharged LS.
