Just about every question you might still have (like "who raised Hornet" or "is Elderbug another vessel" or "what was the deal with No Eyes") probably has one (or more) dedicated Mossbag videos. People have really latched onto this particular one, but I'd recommend browsing his entire library, as it's full of other interesting videos tackling more specific topics than "everything".
His videos are great!! Still in awe at how a game can contain so much lore 🥰🥰🥰

1:41:25 so Menderbug is a super rare encounter (like 1% chance of him appearing there) if the sign is broken. I've never seen it either 😂
And as mossbag said, the only way to get his journal/codex entry is to murder him in cold blood by using descending dark - he runs away if you just drop in the well normally

31:45 the false knight is wearing the armor of Hegemol the white knight. the names of these knights, drya, hegemol, isma, ogrim (dung defender), and Ze'emer can all be found in game with enough talking to characters.
you probably already know this but the five knights can all be seen in the lair of the dung defender, not only that but their chairs can be found in white palace
and you can meet them all "in person". drya is outside the home of the white lady, isma lay in her resting spot in Isma's grove, Hegemol's armor can be found at the resting spot of the false knight, le'emer gives you a pale flower to take to her lover's grave (you can see her nail behind her in her home), and dung defer lay sleeping in his home or waiting for your return to say hello.
I wish there was more info on them! Would love to learn more!!!
@@Sind3lla_ There is also a sillhouette of 4 of the knights and the king when you fight the dream version of dung defender (AKA the white champion)

My reaction to Steel Soul was the same as yours, but I just got the 100% Steel Soul achievement the other day. With what you've learned, you can probably get to False Knight no problem, and maybe you die to him. So you practice. Then you get to the point where you can get to Hornet, and maybe you die to her, or to the Moss Knights. So you practice. Each time you get a little further, and it takes you a little less time to get there, and eventually you get it. But it's not for everyone, and that's ok.

@@Sind3lla_ That's fair. Just for the FYI, because DLC adds another 12%, 100% means you get to pick 12% you can skip. You don't need to do Traitor Lord, White Palace, or Radiance at all. But I'm not trying to talk you into it, just letting you know.

@@Sind3lla_ There are a bunch of things (each charm, each boss, etc) which each are a point. Think of it like there are 112 points to collect, you just need 100 and it doesn't matter what points you get. Radiance is base game, not DLC, but if you do some DLC "points", you can skip others and still get to 100. It's not actually 100% as in every single thing in the game.

39:25 late to this video but i was always under the impression that in HK, dreams are like matter in different forms. A weaker region of dreams is ethereal, but stronger dream essence can take form like a gas condensing into a liquid or solid. i always thought this aspect of dreams was so interesting, because they literally "take root in the world", like dream ghosts or whispering roots.
40:28 also Elder Hu's story is more that he didnt realize he was the infected one all along, not that he brought the infection. In a sense, he "brought the infection" to the mantis through his infection, but they just cut him down

I have a theory.
what if the knight's ability is closely tied to copying other abilities.
So, the knight goes around gathering many abilities.
Each ability he gathers, he copies from something/someone in hallownest.
Vengeful spirit and many other spells from the snail shaman.
Dive from the Soul master
Dash from hornet/the vessel hornet killed
Then, in the true ending when the knight defeats radiance, he achieves the 'void given form' in which he copies the horns of the hollow knight.
In the godhome endings he achieves 'void given focus' in which he copies presumably the deadliest being - The Hunter. Hunting requires focus and the hunter is one who can focus for long times stalking his prey (this is reflected in that form copying look of the hunter).
Now, perhaps void was simply a formless liquid/energy that resided at the bottom in the abyss, but the intervention of the Pale King and the White lady forced the void into the vessels, in turn them becoming vessels, not for radiance but for the void itself.
And the knight is a pure vessel cause he doesn't copy faults.
We know hollow knight was hailed as the pure vessel, but it obtained some sort of elevated mind through it's stay in White palace, mirroring how the Pale King gave all the bugs an elevated mind.
This is such a great theory!! 🤩 never connected the spells to other beings!! 🤩

From what i undestand if you can listen to a character (zote, elderbug, etc), they are not a vessel. The vessel doesn't have a voice
Not a worthy vessel but at least related? Made of void doesn’t mean they can’t think or have a voice? Look at the collector for instance. He laughed and had an obsession and was made from the same stuff as the kings knights….just a theory (?). Someone else mentioned Zote bleeds whereas none of the void creatures do. And that he could just be another bug that stole the mask n items from a dead vessel. So many great theories!!

I believe Midwife wasn't the one who raised Hornet. She's been described as the "daughter of three queens, one born, one raised, one taught." The theory goes that she was born from Hera, the queen of Deepnest, raise by The White Lady, the queen of Hallownest, and taught to fight by Vespa, the queen of The Hive. This training might by the source for her name, since it doesn't make much sense to name the child of a wyrm and a spider Hornet.

The game rewards you for many things, exploration but also completion. For example lots of lore hidden behind secrets and more. There's a heck ton of stuff players can miss. Dialogues super easily lost too. And npcs as well. The hunter looks like this only after finishing his whole journal, which is not the easiest task. Finish it if you want to see more of him. Some cinematics are behind different endings or godhome. And some others are not cinematics but actually more boss fights in the game lol.
PS: no the path of pain does not have more cinematics. If only.
It literally is the game that keeps on giving!! I’d love to see the hunter!! But does sound like a big task 😅
You can work out the Great Knight names with in-game info. Ogrim you know the name of by fighting. Orgim talks about Isma, and comments if you have Isma's Tear. The Pale Queen mentions you must have met Draya on the way in. Hegemol I think might have a direct way to link their name to them, but process of elimination works since you meet Ze'mer.
Very true but one has to REEEEALLLLYY be looking for this and remembering. Me as a casual player could never on my own/or without all of you. 😅

My theory on Zote is controversial because a lot of people think Zote is not a vessel, but I think he is and here is why:
A running theme in the game is that none of the Vessels were truly hollow, and that the idea of a pure vessel was nothing more than a dream.
I think Zote represents the exact opposite of a pure vessel.
He has a mind to think, and is delusional.
He has a will to break, making a lot of poor choices.
He has a voice to cry suffering, and never shuts the fuck up lol
His nickname is also “the grey prince”, indication a connection to royalty but also a tarnished “off-white” as opposed to his parents.
He also hold a deep resentment towards his father.
I think his inclusion in the game is absolutely intentional as representing the most impure vessel, where even his misshapen horns indicate how imperfect he is.
So I will fight the fanbase and defend Zote as a vessel!
All the reasons people may give for why he can’t be a vessel(ability to talk) are actually precisely why he IS a vessel.
He’s simply the worst vessel, and for that I love him lol

People who argue that Zote is not a vessel often say “he has a mouth, so he’s probably the same species as elderbug”…
But she’s right, elderbug DOES look like a vessel…
vessels dont have mouths and cannot talk.
zote is never not talking.
the hollow knight "makes sound" but thats not him making that sound. it is the radiance crying out.
therefore it is consistent that vessels dont speak and do not make sound.
zote wears the same kind of cloak as vessels as that cloak appears to be standard issue to knights. vessels do not have any discerning feature on their body aside from their masks. if you took the player's cloak off itd be a black body of void and a mask.
@@THEN00BINATORX3 except that none of the vessels were perfect and many had features that they were not supposed to have.
Ghost very clearly has a will based on all the choices he can make, as well as being told that he has a will all of his own by Jinn. This is in spite of being a vessel.
Hollow knight has a mind he’s not supposed to have, and cracks because of the feelings he had for his father.
Many of the vessels are misshapen with different features, therefore Zote having a mouth isn’t a reason for not being a vessel, it’s just another flaw and failed attempt by the king to create something pure and hollow.
I love this theory!! There’s been a few other comments in reference to this in the comments. Like my thought is what if all the eggs didn’t make it to the abyss. Could some have been born as opposed to being emptied and filled with void? Is zote a bug faking to b me a vessel? Is that why the mask is cracked?
I think they’re related somehow. Whether empty of void or not … who knows?? 🤷🏻♀️
You can meet Steel Soul Jinn fairly early in a Steel Soul run - so when you've done everything you want to do with your current run, you could always do one Steel Soul attempt. If you die, little time wasted, and you might meet someone new!
That’s a really good point! Can one switch back and forth between steel soul mode and normal? I have no idea how it works 😅 not even sure if that question makes sense lol
@@Sind3lla_ no, you can't switch. When you die in Steel Soul the run ends. Can be fun after fully completing the game though since you're pretty good at staying alive by then.

@cind3lla a character can only be a vessel if it does not have a mouth on its mask. elderbug looks like a vessel, but his face/mask has a mouth.
zote is not a vessel either since void does not have a mouth. they can vocalize but not speak.
the collector can laugh and it is void, the hollow knight can emit the Radiance's cry, but they do not have mouths.
vessels however cannot speak
Ooh great point. So they’re not vessels but could they still be related? Just cuz their carcasses were filled with void doesn’t break family ties?! Did all eggs make it down into the abyss?! These could all be bs questions but fun to think about!
@@Sind3lla_we genuinely dont know for sure. i believe that void is shapeless and formless unless magic focuses them such as the case of the vessel. its not in the video, but mossbag talks about it on his other content.
GODHOME SPOILERS AHEAD specifically about the Pantheon 5 ending
but the Shadelord/Void God/the darkness whatever you want to call it has a statue in godhome if you beat P5. if you inspect it, it says "Void Given Focus". in the files it was originally going to say " void given mind".
i like to think Higher Beings are entities that can think of their own accord without the influence of other higher beings. without the pale king or radiance, bugs are mindless and wander aimlessly. the radiance represents Nature, and the Pale King represents Nurture. the pale king came from no where and began forcing his will upon the lesser beings, focusing them to glorify them. but void is aimless, shapeless, and unable to be tamed. at least until the pale king began his experiments, creating first the kingsmould and steel soul entities, such as the flying bug robots in the white palace. the void has no mind or soul yet vessels like lost kin/broken vessel, the vessel that hornet killed at the start of the game, and the player are able to do tasks and even learn swordplay. i think this is their focus, they absorb the information of their surroundings much like how in the minds of the dreamers you can absorb their essence. these experiences shape their Nurture. the title of Hollow Knight may just mean a vessel who's Nurture has been perfectly focused to their surroundings. vessels like the Lost kin, who havent been focused fell from the ascent out of the abyss, lacked the Nurture necessary to adapt to the world. succumbing to their Nature of aimlessness and lack of focus. they are void with enough focus to take shape but lack the nurture to escape the abyss, but become shades. the hollow knight is the perfect balance of Nature and Nurture.
This is so deep and I love it! Damn I should have written my thesis on this game instead had I known about it two years ago 😂

Though it's not explicitly stated he's dead, the sprite file for the nail is entitled something like "quirrel_dead" or something. He's very old, so it might be he just left, opting to no longer defend himself from dangerous encounters, assuming he's to die soon even if he gets out. Regardless, he said his goodbye, he's at peace, and that's probably the best kind of ending to one's life you can really hope for. Yeah, it's sad, but also kinda beautiful, IMO.
@@JaggerG as someone who works closely with devs and programmers sprite names may not mean anything and could also be inside work jokes or intentionally named something to throw off those that go that far as to reading sprite files 😅 but also I like the poetic ending it implies. 🥲
I hope you try the three first pantheons, they will give you a surprise in the end if you haven´t seen or spoiled that for you yet. The fourth and specially fifth one oboy that one is a tiny bit tough :D

If you do end up choosing not to do the godmaster pantheon stuff (I don’t blame you it’s a slog) I would highly recommend either watching someone beat them or maybe even reacting to it because there are some pretty cool surprises that I think you’d enjoy as a viewer.

I think in your playthrough you should google and use youtube now. It will help you with the few you cannot beat. In my opinion, your perfect charms would be:unbreakable strength, sharp shadow, quick slash, mark of pride. You should search out the rest of your charms as well. Get you a break from bosses for a bit. You are way better than you think. Are you going to play SilkSong?
