  • Haulover Inlet in Florida is a popular spot for experienced boaters seeking a thrill. Known for its challenging conditions and strong currents, the inlet connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and is famous for its rough waves and strong winds, which can make boating hazardous. Despite the risks, many boaters are drawn to the inlet's challenging conditions and the opportunity to navigate through it.

      A captains license does not replace experience and coaching. Merchant Mariner Credentials are only given to people who can prove years and many hrs of experience. I only point this out because, there is no "captain course". And if there is, its a scam. Nothing replaces years on a boat under the supervision of a seasoned captain.

    The Scout captain should not have had people in the bow going out of the inlet especially in following seas. It was not about to sink, just unbalanced. Following seas are tough and not easy for novices and even experienced captains.

    I would speculate the boat at 1:39, listing side to side, has a hold full of water, although it also appears to be overloaded. It seems to me that boaters at Hauover are some of the most clueless I have ever seen; The ramp videos aren't any better regarding skills. PS If I were to boat there, I would have two high capacity automatic bilge pumps minimum...

      I would have a real boat, not some POS production boat with water getting into the bilge through the laughable "watertight" hatches that aren't even weathertight.

      @@vibratingstring Well it would seem to me the open bow is nothing more than a giant water scoop? Back in 89, I had a bow-rider; however; When underway, I had the canvas snapped in place over the front. PS Although I doubt the canvas would have held up, considering the hundreds of gallons taken aboard with each stuffing of the bow?

    • @vibratingstring
      @vibratingstring Před 26 dny +1

      @@jamesw.6931 yes open bows are scoops but if there is enough angle (sheer) to the cockpit sole, the water will run aft and out the scuppers. Most of these boats on the market are not properly designed.
      One of my designs is completely open but the cockpit sheer and the transom scuppers, along with no deck hatches, means you cannot end up in this situation

      @@jamesw.6931 I am a naval architect. I've done some custom small boats, more engineering than building them. I do a lot of consulting for new stabilizer installations and see all the latest production 25 to 50 footers as well as superyachts. Some names are not worth their reputations haha. Most of my new builds over the years have been commercial tugs, ferries, tankers, barges etc, or small boats from 13 to 25 feet.

    Open bow vessels (bow riders) are at far, far, far greater risk of taking on water and sinking than are closed bow vessels in surf waves. It is every vessel's Captain who has the obligation, responsibility and duty to balance the passenger load in his vessel and to operate their vessel at a safe speed for the conditions on the water. The vessel was in danger of sinking in this video because the Skipper was totally clueless about safely operating his vessel.

      People are clueless literally. The passengers have *no idea* about boats. They've been invited by the owner who also has *no idea* about the sea. So match made in heaven. The boat's design encourages foolishness: capacious forward "seating area" and people just go up there. Seems perfect to them. No engine noise. They can see the sights better, feel the breeze. All good--until the inlet or some seas...but mr. "boater" at the helm doesn't know to call them aft. And there isn't seating back there.
      These boats are stupid. So many useless boats with shiny gelcoat, tons of "features" but terrible design.
