- Hydrogen Car: Even as fuel prices keep soaring causing widespread public dissatisfaction, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari today rolled into the Parliament in a green hydrogen-powered car - the first of its kind in India. The Minister travelled from his residence to the Parliament in the car this morning as part of a pilot project. Mr Gadkari has often spoken about a transition to renewables and green energy.

Hydrogen cars are ultimately electric cars. Hydrogen is used to produce electricity which drive the motor. Hydrogen cars IMO are more practical and sustainable compared to battery powered car. Easy to recharge, no E-waste, benefits of electric cars. I hope India manufactures Hydrogen for these types of cars and set up recharging facilities in all petrol pumps. In the initial stages as interim measure, while green hydrogen capacity is up to mark, India can use its reserve of coal not suitable for thermal power to produce black hydrogen. Gadkari is one of few efficient ministers, so high hopes on him.

@@nighthawk4028 The tank size of hydrogen car is typically 5.6kg and costs $85 to fill and give full tank range of about 650km which is about same range as an ICE car which costs $65-$70 to fill. So no, not 4 times, but a little more. Experts say hydrogen manufactured from renewable energy when scaled up would cost between $3-$6 per kg, meaning $15-$30 per tank, much lower than diesel or petrol. That's in the USA
In India, 5.6kg Hydrogen costs INR 840 or 150/kg. Green Hydrogen, costs INR 2800 or 500/kg. The aim is to bring that down to 80/kg.
It is very cheap fuel and gadkariji know very well how to promote them. No cost on ad/film no superstar to pay money. Gadkariji is a superstar itself.

This is a practical solution for a large country like India. But the infrastructure to build a huge network has a small chance for success.
This hydrogen technology is definitely what india needs in the next 50 years but for the next decade I would say CNG network for current petrol cars and EV infrastructure should be made a priority.

Life of Toyota mirai is 20 years
Range of Electric car is 200 -300 KM max
Range of Toyota mirai is 600 Km
It take 3 to4 hours to charge Electric vehicles
It takes 3 to4 minutes 5o refuel hydrogen tank
Cost of charging EV is 1 rupee per KM
Cost hydrogen is 4 rupees per KM (green H2)
Cost of Grey hydrogen per KM is 1.20 rupees

Not practicle at all this tech is not something new , hydrogen options were looked on by different markets earlier but didn’t work and were dropped & the reason is ( the car systems become too complicated as too much of maintenance required , for eg in CNG ITS 1 TANK, in HYDROGEN there are 3 TANKS in car + many other engine complications.) that’s why world shifted to electornic battery cars , look at China they have become the king of battery manufacturing vehicles and we are going towards dropped technology of the world ( hydrogen). Just can’t imagine why these ministers don’t understand common daily ground problems people will have with such complicated tech.

My friend these technologies were defeated by the petrol diesal car manufacturing lobby on one hand and oil producing countries on the other hand.

What we do we are poor
It is an expensive technology. Not sustainable since hydrogen will be produced from electrolysis that requires electricity. Too much transitions in energy and too much losses- from coal to electricity to hydrogen to electricity(again) to mechanical. Only one state in US is using hydrogen based cars and that too because of the high subsidy on production of hydrogen. For past 20 years in US, the technology could not be scaled up.
