Yes sir Tim - I remember the 4th OH well and visiting only the bottom portion. My first wife had ancestors who fought in that regiment and we were part of the donations to have the monument repaired and restored.

Wow! Just wow. Mr Smith you know exactly what's going on in the battle field. You explain it so clear without any mumbo-jumbo. Thanks for the history lesson. When I go back I would like to visit both monuments. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Being from Ohio, I always took a little extra interest in the monuments to Ohio regiments on the battlefield. There is a small Ohio monument on Steinwehr Ave. across from General Pickett's Buffet that is made of zinc. I was always a little embarrassed at how small and cheap it looked. I did not realize that the monument to the 4th Ohio was zinc as well. I guess I didn't examine it too closely. I'll give it a close up look next time I visit Gettysburg. Thanks for a great insight into these, Tim.

That little one you're talking about is also for the 4th OVI. Companies G & I. I'm actually surprised that Tim didn't mention it in the video. It makes sense that it's made from the same material.

Now that you mention it, I do recall it is also for the 4th Ohio. It would be interesting to know if there are any other zinc monuments on the battlefield.

The monument was re-installed about 20 years ago after sitting in a warehouse for many years.

I'm thankful for these videos because they've given me a deeper appreciation for the monuments that I've driven or walked past a hundred times and never gave much thought about the stories behind them.

Great that you had your memory of the place and those postcards which show that the full monument was there earlier. It's also good that people were thinking and doing their job back in those days. I wonder if there are any other zinc monuments that have had problems.
