  • You’d have to be fearless to thrive in the fiery ensemble of HBO’s hit drama ‘Succession,” which is probably why Matthew Macfadyen just earned his second Emmy nomination for doing just that. “[Actors] can always find something to blame,” he says. “But it's actually just fear of committing and jumping in and doing the scene; saying the words, and looking the other person in the eyes, and playing the scene."
In this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, Macfadyen breaks down how to be a breakout performer, even in a show that’s all breakout performances.
This episode is brought to you by HBO Max.

What a brilliant interview by Vinnie Mancuso. He is intelligent, perceptive, warm, insightful, knowledgeable, and very empathetic. No wonder he got the best out of MM.

Absolutely love listening to this beautiful man speak.. his voice is mesmerizing and his laugh pure delight..
Matthew MacFadyen is one man you can enjoy thoroughly in a podcast.. they sort of break you down to build you up.. a comment he made .. just one example of things that he says that attracts and maintains your interest..
And the interviewer asked interesting and appropriate questions.. and then he stood back and allowed Matthew to answer and comment.. without interrupting him.. so well done this!
Much has been said about the velvety voice of Matthew MacFadyen.. so true! Although have to admit prefer his English accent.. he is definitely in a class by himself..
Have never seen Matthew in Succession because I prefer him in the roles he made memorable for me personally.. however he is a quintessential actor who can be whomever he chooses to be.. he can take an appalling or unpopular character.. and bring out the nature of his character in such a way you quite learn to love him.. this is skill that I believe is innate..
This podcast was absolutely riviting.. knowing it was dealing with Succession.. which I have never seen.. tend to agree with Colin Firth who said he could not see Matthew in this.. can understand how Matthew would like this.. as he said this made him less selfconscious.. and the fact that Matthew handles this role so well he has earned an Emmy and nominated for a second.. shows just how amazing and talented this brilliant actor really is,
To come into a scene and make sure everyone is ok.. the character is action,, you are what you do.. play the scene as written,, and trust.. amazing advice from an awesome actor..
Matthew MacFadyen is a truly courageous man.. as well as a most beautiful one., he is a credit to his craft,, to his family.. and to all who know him.,
So enjoyed this podcast.. thank you ..most ardently.. for doing it..
    Jen999💙

MacFadyen is an interesting young actor. Enjoyed what he said about fear, which some people equate with procrastination and that the writing and his costar actions/reactions determined a lot of approach to his craft (role). I read somewhere that he stated that he no longer wanted to do period pieces after "Pride & Prejudice", I guess a fear of being branded, so to speak.

The discussion about how he nailed the Americaness of the character was very interesting. So much more than just doing an American accent. One of the most memorable TV characters ever. Right up there with Michael Scott and Saul Goodman.

Truth be told, people want more …much more of this Logan Roy world
HBO should produce a show about the early life of Logan Roy: showing Logan in the years when he put Conners mom in a mental facility and when he married 2nd wife and when the kids were very young but there should be flash backs to Logan’s childhood and formidable years with his brother and whatever went down with Logan’s sister sort of like the God father part 2 flashbacks. Showing Logan’s uncle beating him, forming the emotional and psychological framework for Logan’s life and how he became the person we see in succession. There is still so much fans would like to know about Logan Roy and how he came to be. It would be a home run for WBD HBO if it is done correctly and casting the Young Logan Roy correctly.
