Edward Lear is EVERYTHING to me and I grew up writing silly limericks with my family because of him, and I still love writing limericks to this day. I've been writing ones about snails and moths this week. So much fun.
Thanks so much! You're one of my top 5 CZcamsrs. Next book coming next year will definitely send you a copy!
Well that's made my week ^_^ can't wait!
Jimmy Santiago Baca, Carolyn Forche, Joy Harjo, Mariahadessa Tallie, Luis Rodriguez, Suheir Hamad, Kamilah Moon, Stanley Kunitz, Jacqueline Suskin, Ana Akhmatova, Khalil Gibran, - I literally have hundereds of " favorites." I have been a lover of poetry since childhood and a published poet myself, for 35+ years.
Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath are probably my favourites. I had to study them for school but I really enjoyed their poems. I definitely need to get around to reading more poetry!
At the moment, my two favorite poets are John Donne and Seamus Heaney. As for more recent poetry, I love Vera Pavlova, Li-Young Lee, and Don Paterson. :)
I LOVE Mary Beard so much as well!
Meghan Beech just puts that love into epic lyrical words ^_^
I love Benjamin Zephaniah and Michael Rosen! Will definitely check out Don Paterson, thanks for the recommendations.
Paterson is quite different from the other two but I hope you enjoy him :D.
I adore Kate Tempest -- I've taken to her work with an evangelistic zeal and I'm so glad you talked about her on your channel and I decided to read Hold Your Own after that. I'm really excited to read her new novel as well!
(And Benjamin Zephaniah has been on my list for the longest time!) Awesome video. c:
Oh I am so glad you picked up Hold Your Own after I mentioned it and loved it as much! She is spectacular right - I'll never forget her poetry. Thanks!
Oooh it seems we have very similar tastes in poetry :D Some of my favourites here, big fan of Megan Beach! I really must read some Benjamin Zephaniah and Kate Tempest, I'd love to learn more about their work and feature them on my Poetry Chats series. A trip to the library is definitely needed! :)
1) Tennyson 2) Poe 3) Blake, I don't really read a lot of poetry but these are my fav's
I watched your haul and ended up buying eight of the Faber New Poets collections, which I found for relatively cheap on Amazon. From here on out, I will be signing the check: PLACE ON THE BILL OF JEAN B. THOUGHTS. XD Though seriously, I am really convinced to check out these poets, because I feel that lesser known authors, especially poets and short story writers that do not get the recognition they truly deserve. I am really looking to explore newer poets, especially since I plan to review a collection from a poet that talks about social injustice and societal issues, many of which touch on topics that sound right up your alley. When it comes to structure, I like free verse and something that is catchy. Traditional rhyme scheme needs to feel nature, because when it's forced, it turns me away. Thank you for sharing! :) -Josh
thank you for poitic ideas.
watching you and your ideas from nepal.
loved.
Uggggrrr, I just realised I forgot to buy the Kate Tempest's collection when I was in London on holidays. I knew I had forgotten something! Anyway, my top 5 favourite poets are Walt Whitman, Federico García Lorca, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Zbigniew Herbert and Nobel Prize winner Wisława Szymborska.
I don't read poetry a lot, but I love Poe, Dante and Drummond. Thanks for the recommendations!!
I've only ever read Poe's prose which I find shocking in myself haha.
Love your accent. I love poetry too☺️☺️☺️
I love some brazilian poets like Casimiro de Abreu, Alvares de Azevedo, Augusto dos Anjos e Castro Alves. I also like a portuguese poet called Antero de Quental
I don't read a lot of poetry, but some of my favorite poets are Dionysios Solomos, part of whose poem was turned into the Greek National Anthem, C. P. Cavafy and Kostas Kariotakis. I have tried to read some foreign poets, but it's difficult for me to connect with their poems the way I do when I read a poem written in Greek. Have you read any contemporary Greek poets or authors in general?
have you heard about Rumi and Hafiz?
OH MY GAWD, WE JUST NEED TO SIT DOWN AND TALK BECAUSE HONEYCHILD I LOVE POETRY AND SO DO YOU. But, some of my faves are Sarah Kay, Taylor Mali, Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz, Katie Ailes, Abdul Hammoud, Luka Lesson, Ankita Shah, Aarcha RS, Rhiannon McGavin, and honestly, a crap ton more.
Poetry is a tricky one for me. I think it is just about testing the waters and seeing what floats your boat and ticks the boxes for poetry in your brain. I really want to read some Zephaniah. Mary Beard is wonderful isn't she. I started a Mary Beard fan club ages ago and then let it drop. I looooove Wendy Cope, have you read her? Her poems just get me, or I get them, the move me and make me cackle.
Reform the group! I'll be secretary ;). Also totally, poetry is soo varied it can take a while to find what you like but there's a good chance there is something you will. I haven't but it's noted down down and I will check her out ^_^ thanks! Also read Zephaniah yes!!!
What is your experience, obviously going to be extensive, of essay writing? Do you have any tips that are beyond the every-day (i.e apart from the blatant Intro, 'main' and conclusion)? How do we form arguments? Is originality, in the purest definition, ever possible in writing? How do you assess, rate and choose evidence? It is never as simplistic as that, I understand, and is usually contextual to whatever we are writing. .... I am just slightly confused.
I much prefer spoken word/performance poems. I think hearing the emotions in people's voices makes them hit me so much harder. My favorite poet is Andrea Gibson; if you haven't read or heard them, definitely check them out. There are several videos on CZcams of their performances, and some of their poems are posted on their website. I find that even when reading poetry, I read it out loud because it helps me understand the flow and emotion more. Will definitely be checking out your recommendations!
Benjamin Zephanhiah stood out to me! One poem that's always stuck with me is Iolaire by Ian Crichton-Smith. I think you'd like it as it deals with universal impact of war and its disregard for human life. It also has lots of universal imagery. Maybe you studied it/Crichton-Smith in school?
Zephaniah*
Ted Hughes, Charles Bukowski, Dorothy Parker, Kate Tempest as well and Carol Ann Duffy all amazing poets and a few on my favourites xx
Yes, esp Bukowski who I had a 30 letter correspondence back in the 80s before he became an international star. Great letter writer along with short story and poetry writer.

Great video! I really need to get into poetry more! I really enjoy the spoken word-type poetry as well and even written some of it myself. I've loved Shane Koyczan ever since I heard his poem To This Day, which reduced me to a puddle of tears. A recent favourite is Alok Vaid-Menon of the duo Dark Matter. I first heard their poem Funeral in this video: czcams.com/video/j7Gh2n9kPuA/video.html (the poem starts around 9:37 but the whole video is worth watching!)
Oh, I'm also a fan of Savannah Brown here on youtube and her poetry!
Good poetry to me always kind of feels like someone has grabbed my heart and is wringing it out like a wet rag, but in a good way?
Hi try to check Vivian Hennah excellent poetry imo.
Great list , sorry comment is five years too late but better than never
I had to watch this video twice mainly because I spent around 2 minutes the first time trying to work out if the book to the right was Howard Marks Book of dope stories :P
+Njp2K9 haha the family bookshelves make for a where's wally type background ;)
Haha :P it seems like it!!
Oh, what a beautiful accent. Like a balm for the ears. From Russia with love💙🙂
Charles Bukowski was the greatest poet and short story writer of all time. And anyone who leaves him out of the great modern poets or shirt story writers are either jealous or ignorant.
For instance:
“Peace”
I thought the dove
was the bird of
peace
but here they were shooting them out
of the brush
and climbing up the sides of mountains
and banging them down;
and everywhere the doves went
there were the
hunters
blasting and beaming and blasting,
and one man who didn’t
in the slightest
resemble a dove
was shot in the shoulder;
and there were many complaints
that the doves
were smaller and scarcer
than last year,
but the way they fell
through the air
when you stung the
life
out of them
was the same;
and I was there too
but I couldn’t shoot anything
with a paintbrush;
and a couple of them
came over to my canvas
and stood and stood and stood
until I finally said,
for God’s sake
go look at Picasso and Rembrandt,
go look at Klee and Gauguin,
listen to a symphony by Mahler,
and if you get anything
out of that
come back
and stare at my canvas!
what the hell’s wrong with
him? the one guy
said.
he’s nuts. they’re all nuts,
the other guy said. anyhow,
I got my 10 doves.
me too, his buddy said, let’s
go home: we can have them
in the frying pan
by 2:30.
-Charles Bukowski

Been trying to get into poetry more so this was really helpful! I read Hold Your Own earlier this month and absolutely loved it, so powerful (talked about it here if you fancy a watch: czcams.com/video/dq-za-caWu8/video.html) Have you read any Andrew McMillan? His collection Physical is one of my favourite reads of the year so far.
I really love Sarah Kay!
Never read anything by her I'll check her out :) a few other's mentioned her too!
behind those dark clouds
the sun brilliantly shines
from worthless rock
often found
are precious gems
of rarest kind
damaged souls
are much the same
invisible they are
to the naked eye
yet no one knows
who to blame
when clouds hide
the sun in the sky
-rnc
I really enjoyed Brand New Ancients. Another fantastic spoken word poet is Sarah Kay. I've been listening to her work for a couple of years. My intro to her was a beautiful poem she did with Phil Kaye called When Love Arrives. It makes you feel all kinds of things. Her TED talk and poems are also great. I'll drop the links to both here: czcams.com/video/mdJ6aUB2K4g/video.html , czcams.com/video/0snNB1yS3IE/video.html
Hi! Mam; i wrote a couple; i wonder if You can find some time to read; You remarkable feedback will be a great favour!
perdao Dragon, o mais correto teria sido falar em poetas de lingua portuguesa...sim Antero de Quental ....portugues
I'm a fan of Sylvia Plath, Charles Bukowski, Lang Leav, Michael Faudet and Sarah Kay.
Poetry is not just words, but also the silent voice that speaks to our soul!
I really want to check out William Blake.
for the love of god stop talking and get ine with it
