    Slava Ukraini, considering what is the Ukrainian reality of war from russia, I think to have Ukraine at Eurovision at all is a miracle. This beauty that Ukraine creates also comes from the sound of the Ukrainian language , vocal sound waves , and this drives the ruzzians absolutly mad. I do so hope that Ukraine wins Eurovision! Inmy opinion just being able to produce this song out of Ukraine is a triumph of ukrainian beauty over ugly russian terrorism.

    I am 66 years old. I was born and grew up in a Ukrainian village, all of whose inhabitants sang folk songs, and only the most skilled among them used various techniques of "white voice" singing. It sounded fantastic!
    The frontwoman of GO_A, Kateryna Pavlenko, has been professionally studying folk songwriting for years, traveling through the villages of Ukraine, recording Ukrainian folk songs, and learning song technique. While living in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, she even managed a folk song ensemble in a small town in the Kyiv region.
    This man and many others like him live for music, not hoping for fame and big fees.
    Jerry Heil grew up in a small town in the Kyiv region, where she graduated from a music school. Of course, everyone there sang Ukrainian folk songs, and her mother is one of the best performers of them. Jerry Hail is currently a student at Berklee College of Music in the USA, and she was forced to take an academic leave of absence and return to Ukraine due to Russia's treacherous attack on Ukraine.
    I want to say that it is the Ukrainian villages that reliably preserve and transmit from generation to generation the Ukrainian national cultural heritage. Obviously, it is precisely because of this that Russian troops are now totally destroying the rural population of Ukraine. In the 30s of the last century, the Russians also staged a genocide of Ukrainian peasants, creating an artificial famine - the Holodomor.

    What can I say - the song is a banger! It checks all the boxes for a great Eurovision entry showcasing Ukraine's culture intertwined with the modern style. And can we just for a moment appreciate Jerry's vocal range, being able to reach those high notes whilst having that much power that low (in the chant part) is rare. I'm super impressed!
    This year is stacked with great entries!

    Hello from Ukraine))) I feel like the similarity you hear needs to be addressed. So what you hear as so similar to shum is actually just the way they present their voice (the traditional singing style is kind of like throat singing, and that method or technique of singing is actually what most people from other parts of the world here as unique and similar to one another). But the parts of the traditional melodies that they use are actually different, from different traditional chants, they all have same/similar rhythmical structure but are still different chants. Shum is based on and around a traditional “welcoming of spring/rebirth chant”, it incorporates both melody and some of the most common lyrics from the variations of those chants.
    This song incorporates part of a melody of one the numerous winter chants. Those carry a similar but different message, they are built around the idea of rebirth of the soul, perseverance of the mind which will allow for the physical rebirth of nature to come later on, at it is implied.
    But yeah, the song is great)))

    Thank you for your wonderful response.
    "White voice" is the Ukrainian name for some authentic/traditional Ukrainian singing manners, different from the academic manner. The soloist of the GO_A group, Kateryna Pavlenko (you mentioned their song "SHUM", noise, Eng.), and Jerry Heil skillfully use these folk singing manners.
    So, I want to say that you, like other foreign listeners, obviously recognize Ukrainian songs with elements of folklore not at all by their melody, but by the unique way of singing "white voice" 😊.
    There are many written testimonies that were left behind by foreign travelers, diplomats, businessmen, and soldiers who were on the territory of Ukraine in the Middle Ages and later, about their admiration for Ukrainian song culture and its uniqueness.

    The fact that similar "non-commercial projects" recently get a chance to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest is the merit of the producers of the ESC national selection in Ukraine. Usually, this kind of music is not very popular in Ukraine, and the tastes of ordinary Ukrainians, unfortunately, develop mainly in sync with world trends, which inexorably reflect the degradation of humanity to the level of the world depicted in George Orwell's novel "1984".
    Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil won not only and not so much because their "white voice" (a special non-academic manner of singing) awakened historical memory in the hearts of ethnic Ukrainians, but also because of the meanings encoded in the lyrics, which foreigners, on unfortunately, with all due respect to them, they wouldn't understand, even if they had a perfect command of the Ukrainian language, or if this song had lyrics in English.
    Ukrainians wept when they first listened to this song, their hearts sank, and at the same time their Faith and Hope for salvation grew (because "With us Mama Teresa, Diva Maria", Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary are with us), their faith in their own strength (because "All the divas were born as the human beings", all the divas are born as ordinary people, and only their deeds make them saints), their faith in Justice grew, because can God allow it, because can people of good will of the whole world to allow the Russians to destroy us in the 21st century just because we are Ukrainians, just because we have our own country, just because Russia (successor of the Moscow Ulus of the Golden Horde, founded in 1272 by Khan Mengu-Timur) wants to keep anything appropriated by her before:
    - the name of our ancient state (according to the decree of Tsar Peter I),
    - our 1,000-year history (according to the decree of Queen Catherine II),
    - our shrines and even our saints (according to the policy of falsification of the history of the Russian Empire, at all times).
    Such is the power of the text of this song, decorated with beautiful music and wonderful performance.

  • @V.Zakomirnyi
    @V.Zakomirnyi Před 13 dny +2

    Yes, the new ESC contestant from Ukraine is not like Ruslana, who won with a dance song. And this is definitely not the firework man Verka Serdyuchka (2nd place), who still warms the hearts of typical Eurovision fans (the audience gave her 1st place). And this is not a song in the famous "Eurovision format" (not pop, not a ballad) - such songs allowed beautiful Ukrainian girls with beautiful voices and skillful performance to regularly take prominent places in the finals of the Eurovision contest. But all those successful performances only added to the "trash basket".
    I am satisfied with the fact that recently, with their decisions and voices, Ukrainians have enabled Europeans to get acquainted with the echoes of Ukrainian folk, with the novelties of Ukrainian songwriting. In general, the Eurovision TV show was created for the mutual familiarization of Europeans with national cultures. In this sense, the English language contributes little to this. 😊
    Today, the main criterion by which the Eurovision audience evaluates the competition songs looks like this: "rocks/doesn't rock" (I don't know how this slang sounds in English, so it's just a direct translation), in other words, how much the song inspires a lively, happy dance . Isn't this degradation?
    After all, traditionally, in most cultures of the world, music was divided into dance music and song music. The main purpose of the song is the emotional accompaniment of a person, which is equally achieved through the melody, rhythm, harmony, and through the text of the song. Whereas dance music primarily excites the motor centers of a person, and there is no meaningful text there by default.
    Music only vividly illustrates the rapid degradation of humanity. Not only music, unfortunately. Have you watched the movie "American Fiction" ?

    • @mattspintosmith5285
      @mattspintosmith5285 Před 7 dny

      I have a lot of sympathy with what you say. We have to remember of course that Eurovision is Saturday night television - a very long show too. People have parties. By the time people come to vote many viewers have had a few drinks.
      ! Fast dance songs with a bit of humour tend to have an advantage for this reason - although slow ballads win now and then...Arcade, Amor Pelos Dois. To be fair, Croatia's fast crazy rock song this year is packed with meaning - which is an achievement. I love this Ukraine entry. It will do well, but mid tempo tends not to produce outright winners.
