I consider Christiane Amanpour to be a national treasure. We need more people, like her, in journalism.

In the first segment she clearly differentiated herself as having a viewpoint from outside of America.

It's a joy to hear from an eloquent, well-studied person.
I would word this a bit differently, given the subject matter. Maybe "it's so valuable to hear from..." instead of "a joy" simply given that they're discussing war, death, and destruction.

Ms Amanpour is always a delight to learn from. Her insight and ability to explain and discuss the most difficult of situations is to be admired. Been a fan for 40years. She is still the best. Love her show.

Christiane is one of the best guests Stephen has ever had. These are very important issues for all of us around the world , and he has an international audience, so we as English people can also be informed. Maybe they should have more international segments in the show because there are many people watching who have no idea who some of the guests are at all.
I do like the show a lot though. Stephen and the band are great!

I really respect Christian's observations of the various conflicts in the world. Like Stephen said, she's able to break down the complicated aspects of various cultures, and their wars, into information we can understand.
Furthermore, her reports are more true than politicians' statements

It is so rare to find such high quality journalism that covers such a wide range of perspectives without sensationalizing everything. She is a treasure that more people should seek out and learn from. I may watch her PBS show more than CNN, but I’m sure both are equally good.

We, the people, are not foggy about Ukraine. It is the Maga Republicans who are supporting Putin. We will get around those fools. We want to support Ukraine.
If Ukraine falls, Putin will start looking at Poland. If Putin were to invade Poland, ALL the NATO countries will be expected to answer the call. That could put American soldiers in harm's way, dying on the fields of Poland, because Republicans failed to adequately support Ukraine.
There´s a whole lot "we the people" who cant pay this moths rent and dont have insurance.
And thus have trouble to see why they are responsible for the defence of a nation on the other side of the world.
There are far more complex analysis here, given the long and complex history of this conflict.
But millions of americans struggeling each month wonder about the cost and use of this imperial proxy conflict for them.
My own view is so incredibly cynical its not really worth mentioning.
But that abvementioned position is neither rare nor hard to understand.

@@user-un8tv1pp8m Defending the international order placed in the world after WWII by the USA has everything to do with our well being as a nation. We trade and do business, which brings money for us, with nations that have similar values and interests as us. The Russians have a different set of interests and values that conflict with ours, and so we are in a sense competing forces. If we let them tear apart this world order, we will begin to lose business around the world, and be beaten by the Russians.; hence, there will be more Americans unable to pay rent than are now. Your argument is just short sighted and lacking of knowledge for more complex situations.
@@user-un8tv1pp8m Unless you missed it, Russia has affected the national security of Western countries including the US. Ukraine is just first, Putin will come for NATO eventually if he gets the all clear from Trump. From targeted assassinations on our soil (including using chemical weapons twice in the UK), to election interference in Brexit and US elections, if we ignore that Russia is our adversary we're sleepwalking into another World War. The US was skeptical about stopping Hitler too, until his allies in Japan launched a surprise attack, only then we woke up to the realization that when dictators are giving a free hand they will never accept a strong and prosperous United States. And the US cannot be alone, all of our allies are our biggest trading partners, if they all collapse, it will absolutely wreck us too. We need to realize that before it's too late.
So true, everyone wants black and white/simple quick positions and views. If your beliefs in anything are to fragile to be challenged then you need to have the courage to re-examine those beliefs.

She's been amazing for 35 years, at least. She appeared on my radar during the Iraq/Kuwait war reporting for CNN. She was always stunningly clear in her descriptions, concerns of this war. She has maintained this comprehensive explanation and conversation with those of us smart enough to listen to her on a very wide variety of news events. Colbert is a master at bringing relevant voices to his table, his show. Christiane's voice is invaluable, and Steven knows it, and I love his platform for this acknowledgement.

I’m not so sure America ever got the full truth. There may have been less lies and “alternative facts,” but there were certainly always a lot of selective omissions. Why do you think most Americans had no clue about the realities in Palestine for the 75 years? This is by far not the only issue that our news did not bother to cover. At least now we can access news from around the world to get different perspectives as well as connecting with others around the globe via social media to get a more well rounded perspective.

What she's saying about people not being able to tolerate nuance is so true. A quick run through of social media can tell you that. If you're pro-Israel you're islamaphobic and supporting genocide, if you support Palestine you're an anti-semite nazi or if you're like me, and think they're both wrong, you're all of those things.
We've lost the ability to criticize things without it somehow turning to extremes. You can't say anything critical about Israel without being labeled an anti-semite in the same way someone who says something critical about an LGBT person is *obviously* a homophobe. You can say "What Israel is doing in Gaza is out of line" without hating Jewish people, you can say "Those Palestinian protestors went too far" without hating Muslims.
Now to be clear, there are of course people who really do just hate Jewish people and Muslims and so forth, but in our noble efforts to stamp out blatant hatred somehow the definition of it changed from "People who hate" to "People who don't agree".
The problem with Israel is that people have been far too permissive of the systematic oppression, land theft, murder, kidnapping and apartheid for too long that any pushback is shocking to them. There are Israelis who know this - it's why Breaking The Silence exists, why some would rather go to jail than join the IDF, it's why B'Tselem exists...It's not particularly nuanced or complicated in its basest terms.

Over a decade ago there was some big news out of Israel, I can't remember what it was but it was bad, and political commentators over here in the UK were told by the BBC not to talk about it because they were afraid of getting complaints.

And no Jewish person should be expected to answer for Israel’s crimes because Judaism and Zionism are not the same thing. But to see it used as shield to deflect the murder of thousands of people? My friend works for MSF and returned from Gaza in January. He’s been in some awful places and witnessed awful things, but he’s been left traumatised by what he saw in Gaza.

I continue to support the Ukranian military forces, the civilians. They're trying to just have their own country under a free and sovereign government.

Canada has committed $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. This funding will allow Canada to deliver military assistance to Ukraine through to 2029. If that doesn't show commitments to Ukraine, then I don't know what else to tell you.
