How to Replace Your Xbox 360 RGH/JTAG Hard Drive - Phat & Slim HDD Upgrade Guide

- This covers the process of replacing a hard drive for a hardmodded Xbox 360 console, both Phat/Fat and Slim models! The Slim S and Slim E models are both covered since the process is the Slim replacement process is the same for both models. This works for 2.5" hard drives and solid state drives up to 2 TB in size, while thankfully not requiring too many tools! Aside from an existing casing, the Phat/Fat enclosure requires T6 and T10 screwdriver bits to perform this process. The Slim enclosure will require something such as an X-Acto Knife and a pry tool to open the enclosure, although for a Slim console I would recommend purchasing a new enclosure.

Great to see you still showing the 360 some love. Great video as usual
Thanks!
Perfect timing on this upload, I'm working to install a new SSD on my Slim RGH right now!
Enjoy!
Wow. I just modded my 360 and was going to upgrade the hdd this weekend. Brilliant timing. Thank you!
Woo!
@@MrMario2011 I just wanted to upgrade my stock 360 e hard drive with a 1t SSD I can do that? Hoping it will run better and get better performance?
Did you do something to clone the hard drive? If i put a new ssd or hdd in it won’t recognize
Is anyone gonna ignore that this guy is a moderator on the r/originalxbox subreddit? And a great OG Xbox modder!?
A fun bit of knowledge if you have a USB barcode scanner you can actually plug it into the Xbox and scan the serial number and it'll show up immediately you can also use a iopener from ifixit to properly loosen the glue around the sides it's incredibly useful tool which I use to take off mega drive labels when I replace the batteries and a lot of other good stuff
That’s pretty damn cool
With the FATXplorer you can use up to 16TB.
You need the programm FATXplorer + J-runner with extras.
With the FATXplorer you create a patch for J-runner.
You write the new NAND to your console.
Have fun.
You can use acetone to 're-weld' the top cover plastic! Works for me!
Youre doing good work here brother!
Much appreciated!
Btw those third party cases (and the official one) are designed for 9.5mm thick drives, while most current laptop drives are 7mm. As a result the port sits lower in the case and can be a pain to plug into the console.
What I do is use an xacto knife to cut down the posts in the case. Then use hard drive screws in the bottom of the drive to lift the drive to the point where the SATA ports are in the correct position.
However, the bottom of the drive will no longer be pressing out the clip so it isn't as secure in the console.
To get the drive to press the clip, I fold up a sheet of paper or napkin then wrap it in tape. Then tape that to the bottom of the drive. That acts as a spacer between the drive and clip so it gets pushed out.
Since the third party cases aren't the best the case may not fully close. So I remove a few of the clasps from the lid since they're not all really necessary.
I use Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB external hard drives. They're 59.99 at Walmart and can be easily shucked to give you a very compact SATA to USB 3.0 PCB for other projects.
Some good tips here, thank you!
@@MrMario2011 You're welcome. I've done about 5 RGH systems for friends and family so I wonder if the Walmart staff are gonna get curious why I keep buying the same external drive lol.
i got some of the third party drive cases for the slim... if you ever need to remove the drive or swap it again, they pop back open really easy, it's nice.
nice and simple guide sir just how I like it 👍.I honestly thought all the mods and stuff were on the HDD? but I guess not. luckily all my games are backed up on my pc so i guess i can just put them back on the new HDD with usb or neighbourhood app ??
The NAND itself is modified, but all the files for apps and settings and such will be on your storage device.
now you can just buy the empty case but this is very helpful
you can open the xbox slim case and re use, instead of heat, use a syringe with banana oil (the same used to soften old nail polish) and a spatula to open the cell phone
if you hit along the seam of the case with a small nylon hammer sometimes they will open without any visible damage
For the slim drive, you can use electrical tape on the top cover
True, although I personally don't use it since I somewhat regularly swap out drives hah.
Don’t know if this has been asked yet. Iv scrolled and hadn’t seen it. But what drive did you use for the regular Xbox 360 drive upgrade? I wanna fix my old 360 but the drive has an issue and I’d rather replace it
My console does not recognize the hard drive even though I have cleared it so back to original state what can this be?
The risk of overtightening the screws on the fat console cannot be overstated - I had to buy a replacement HDD because I broke all 4 screw posts on my original.
Luckily a 20GB HDD only costs 50p at local game shops.
MrMario is your guide to replace the hd of a non modded 360 still valid?, if not could you remake a new guide, I just bought a unmoded 360 and would be good to know how to do it. Thanks for your awesome videos.
Still works fine.
@@MrMario2011 sorry, made the question before watching the video, you made a reference tho that video, my bad, but now that i watch it i have a question, you just formated the hd from the xbox and that was it, what about that folder for original xbox, do you still need it or not?, or because it is modded you dont need to worry about it, sorry kind of new in xbox stuff.
By the way thanks a lot for your videos, you do a brilliant work.
Does it work with new RGH3 method Modded Warfare posted on the xbox 360 Phat ?
Which ssd do you reccomend? Love the videos
Anything from a reputable brand.
Love your videos. Want to know, what's the biggest hard drive I can install internally for a Xbox 360e
Answered in the video.
Cool, missed type, I meant stock xbox 360e. But if it's the same I'm golden.
Thank you
I was just given a v2 Jasper 360 (Sep. 2009) and sent it for a RGH service locally. Good to know who I'm going to watch videos from to find out what do you eat RGH with 😂
All I've ever dealt with on both SW and HW level modding are PS3 (Rebug), Wii (softmod, love the funky way I had to get both softmodded), OG Xbox (softmod, TSOP and in two instances, Xecuter 2 and X-Changer modchips) PS2 (FMCB, Modbo 4 and 760 mostly) and PS1 (Onechip and the good ole 4wire).
Would love to find out all the stuff RGH3 can do.
By the way, ending with a question - is it true Jaspers (at least the v2 ones made near the end of 2009) have high rate of success in RGH3-ing?
I'm having a thought that most of them might work due to being nearly very similar in hardware revision as to the first generation of slims - as in, they're what the XCGPU might have been based off?
I don't know of success rates for RGH3 across different Phat models, but I've recommended RGH3 for Slim consoles and RGH 1.2 for Phats due to the instability RGH3 for Phats has. Be sure your installer is going with RGH 1.2 for your console.
Real heat guns are lot better than hairdryers, highly recommended

What's the best practice for upgrading a hard drive and doing a data transfer? I've got a 250gb spinner in my RGH3 slim and want to upgrade to a 2TB ssd but have ~200gb worth of data on the current drive i want to transfer over. FTP would take forever. Maybe USB?
I've had luck with FATXPLORER Beta
Hi I have a question after I changed my hard drive and transfer my avatar, avatar didn't load? I can select the profile but profile's avatar don't load. My dashboard is 2.0.16203.0 is it something about the dashboard? Also I am using xbox 360 on offline
Okay fixed this with installing the update that have the same version as my dashboard
Thanx master ♥️🇹🇷
If I have a 1tb drive can I just format it as exFAT? One of my 360s aren’t modded and I replaced my drive but I think it’s in NTFS file system, is this why it doesn’t show up on my Xbox? I thought it would of at least give me the option to format it through the 360 itself, also love your videos I RGHd another Xbox earlier this year with the tutorial you have and it still going strong 😅
No
@@MrMario2011so if I swap the HDD for a 1TB and RGH the console can i just copy the games over?
Does the 3.0 support 2.5tb and 4tb ?
I have a hard mod xbox 360 (trinity) and a bunch of games on the hdd. Would i be able to buy another hard mod xbox 360 and simply swap in the hdd to play the games? If not, could i copy the full hard drive to another empty one to duplicate it? I want 2 x xbox for Lan play
Yep
So for the original white 360 that I have, I can replace the hard drive on top and I’m guessing most likely I would have to format it either fat 32 or exfat am I correct and 2 TB is the maximum? Also for external cause I’m having a difficult time finding it but what’s the maximum external hard drives I can use with that 360 and what’s the maximum thumb drive that I can use?
Internal is formatted by the console to FATX, external is limited to 2 TB
Hi, i have a question on the type of sata used in the slim model. I know that it is sata 2 in fat models. Is it also sata 2 in slim models or sata 3? I know that sata 3 is backward compatible with sata 2 but I'm thinking of puting an ssd in my slim model. If it's also sata 2 it would be pretty useless as the speed transfer would be limited. Thanks
Neither. 7th Gen consoles use SATA I or SATA 1.5 depending on who you talk to, but they're the same thing.
Thanks for the video, I have RGH'd 360 (slim model), with aurora installed
I have a lot of games ripped from disk and saved on original HDD (disk to GOD addon) with saves etc,
I want to upgrade to 1 tb ssd (original disk is 250 GB),
Is there any way to transfer everything (including aurora itself) ? kind of cloning to SSD?
Yep! Cloning or using something like FATXplorer will help.
Hey quick question, just wanted to ask can it be any 2.5 sata drive for the hdd? I have a jasper white
Yes
@MrMario2011 Ty Mr.Mario ❤️
Thx for the video. I have a 320 gig i want to replace with a 1tb, however i have no idea how to reinstall the 'stuff' after... can i use my duplicator to copy my 320 to the 1tb? or will the console throw a hissy fit if i do that?
Thanks man
You should be able to mount w fatXplorer and do a partition clone
Is it possible to just clone to contents of an already in use xbox drive onto a new one installe following this method? Asking because I am lazy and do not want to setup Aurora from scratch.
Yep! I've personally used FATXplorer
I purchased a premodded RGH3 system. It has Aurora as a custom dashboard. If I upgrade the hard drive, I will have to set that all back up? Will it brick my Xbox?
Yes, you'll have to set it up to some extent again. No it won't brick.
What are compatible external hard disk for xbox 360 think of expanding and adding more games on it
Not really any limitation aside from 2 TB, just need to hook it up through USB and make sure it's picked up. It'll need to be MBR not GPT.
Hi a question regarding HDD, so i have a 500gb HDD that came with my RGH slim that I suspect has a bad file or something that easily freezes the Xbox whilst modding but I cant determine what it could be so just as a test I'd like to put my 2010 250gb retail slim HDD into it to see if it stops. Would I be able to just slot it in & mod a couple of games without any formatting & I can go about installing xexmenu/dashlaunch as normal bro? (I don't intend on making this my all-time HDD or play any XB original games!)
You need to backup your data, not a 1:1 clone - just the data. If you have rgh and aurora you could do it via ftp or usb/external hdd, else you need to connect the hdd to you pc and use a programm for this purpose.
If you suspect a mechanical issue with the drive itself you can now test the drive fully with you pc (format it and use, for example, a tool called disktest. It writes 1gb files until the drive is full and then tries to read them). If there are no problems in your tests I had a similiar problem. It showed itself in 2 ways; Copying files to/from usb from/to my hdd, via aurora, would sometimes cause it to freeze and a specific game would crash (sometimes after 5 or even after 25min) when I copied it to my hdd and played it from there, but it would run for hours without any problems from dvd. Seemingly in some cases the xbox is left with a faulty state in it's filesystem (for example it crashed while a savegame was written etc.).
In that case you need to reformat your drive inside your xbox and then copy your files back to it -> this should solve your problem.
If the hdd itself has indeed some kind of real damage, you need a new one. Just put it the new one in the xbox and format it, and then copy your backup to it.
Could I use a Portable hard drive instead? If so what brand do you recommend that’s safe for a RGH?
You can, but it's more annoying and not ideal to have all of that rely on an external drive. I really just recommend an external drive for games. I personally prefer Western Digital.
After replacement and formatting - the Kinect doesn't work it asks for upgrade on Xbox live. But since the Xbox is jailbreaked i cannot do so. Any suggestions?
Install Avatar Data
I just installed a new hdd in my 360 and its not showing up all the space that its supposed to. Its a 160gb drive and it says only 500mb available. I formatted it already and everything on my pc. Idk what to do
I would try to run the "clean" command through Diskpart on the drive on Windows, then create a new partition. After that pop the drive into your Xbox 360 and format it.
Hi, do you know how to force FSD/Aurora to download covers for games in 2022? I was able to download them a few years ago, but now download functions do nothing despite testing many different builds with "patched" download servers.
Aurora downloads everything just fine, I don't use F3 or FSD anymore but I stopped trying to get downloads to work.
@@MrMario2011 That's weird. I'll try the Aurora again then. Thanks for your reply. Your tutorials are really useful!
If you're looking for a patched Freestyle Dash, search for Freestyle 3.0 Rev 780/783 (Not Official)
@@mortalc13 I've tried all different kinds of builds and all of them couldn't download anything. I'll try as I prefer fsd over aurora, but I don't think it will work.
do u know if you could tramsfer MP4 videos on the hard drive?
Not to my knowledge
So what format does the ssd need to be in mine wont sh0ow up, does teh console need to be hardmodded as well>
Yes
Can you still run the backwards compatibility portion after this?
Yes, although you'll need to run the partition tool for it before loading up the backwards compatibility files.
Hello, just want to ask, this really also works for JTAG consoles?
Title
RGH and JTAG do the same thing for an Xbox 360.
Hi mr. Mario dumb question I can't find a straight answer online for it and I was just hoping that you could help me out. My question is will a third party xbox 360 slim harddrive will install games that require a harddrive I am talking about games like titanfall battlefield 3 4 and hardline and destiny like a oem hard drive from Microsoft and I own a none moded system and I am wanting to get a 500 gb hdd but don't want to pay 100 bucks I don't mind if I can't play original xbox games thanks for the help
As long as it is recognized by the console it will work.
@@MrMario2011 ok cool thank you for clearing that up:)
Does an SSD improve the speed in any way? Unsure if I should get a HDD or SSD
There really won't be any speed benefit on this old of a console.
Loading times are a bit faster , but that's all
My RGH 360 just died on me. Do you know if my hard drive with all the data (saves, achivements, games, freestyle dash) can be just swapped to another RGH 360, and will it work?
Yep
I'm thinking about upgrading my Xbox 360 Elite with a 2TB SSD.
Cool!
do i need to format my hdd to fat32 and then plug it inside of xbox 360slim
Doesn't matter.
I just bought a 500gb RGH Slim off ebay
I'm getting frame dips on my console. The temperatures seem fine, is there a chance that my internal HDD is failing?
Could be, but also realize that games that generation were really not super well optimized many times.
@@MrMario2011 i know, but it does seem like it's frequently going to around 20-10fps

P.D: Mi 360 is modded with 5.0/RGH.
There's no RGH 5.0, but yes any 2.5" drive 2 TB or lower that will fit will work.

Quick Question: Can I just clone my original XBOX 360 HDD onto a SSD or will it cause problems? Also some older posts/forums say, that the XBOX360 has problem reading SSD's and that the speed does not increase which made me wonder since an SSD upgrade on most of my consoles (PS3, PS4) made a huge difference.
Cloning thankfully works from what I've seen. SSD in the console is fine, but you won't ever take full advantage of the full speed due to the limited SATA speed the console has.
@@MrMario2011 thank you for the reply! I am more thinking about lifespan since an SSD can live longer than a HDD. Is there any Special Software that can Close a HDD or do I Just need to go with it via 2 SATA to USB Cables?
Keep the old drive in that casing, buy a new drive with third part casing. Use the old drive as an external one just format it, at least it will look nice .
Not a bad idea.
@@MrMario2011 Yeah pointless making a mess of a perfectly good case and drive.
Does the xbox profit from the SSD speeds?
Technically yes, but not a huge boost compared to a good HDD just because of the older SATA speeds.
Could I just clone my xbox hard drive to a new one? Moving 2tb worth of games and apps from the xbox itself sounds daunting.
The problem is, aurora stores its paths with the device ID of the hard drive in its path, so when you clone it all of your title updates, covers and custom coves, and custom renames are all gone because the new hard drive has a different device ID.
You can write a simple script for aurora to fix this though.
@@JoshLineberry Do you happen to have a link or suggestions to acquire said script? Thanks

My rgh xbox don't read ssd. Why?
It won't on a retail NAND, should work on a modified NAND.
@@MrMario2011 in what way? i have a modified 360 rgh. are there any differences between rgh ??
i'm gonna just duct tape some padding rather than using the original casing LOL
Bro you using that X-Acto knife as you are putting pressure on the case and one slip and a trip to the hospital. Be so careful and or use some decent gloves on the support hand.
We dont want to 2TB hard drives we want to see how to get anything above 2TB to work and we don't care if it's experimental 😊.
Currently not available for internal drives.
Yeah and huge drives with lots of games suck because of how aurora handles it. We really really need xbmc finished for the 360! We could have 16tb drives or 32 and get it to load instant without having to wait for all games to load at the start like aurora does!
God that would be amazing.
!!! I actually have to correct myself, it's very wasted !!!
A highend ssd is a little wasted on a 360,
1. !!! Correction !!! Seemingly the xbox 360 does only have Sata I effectively and that is 150mb/s. So the only advantage an ssd can bring over a modern hdd is faster access times, especially when data is requested when the hdd is in a resting state - since it needs to start spinning before it can return data. So an hdd will have a certain delay, wich could show itself in slow/blocking behaviour when multiple files are requested concurrently.
2. An Xbox Game/DVD is max. ~8GB, wich would take an hdd about 1 min to load... but the RAM is 512mb. A good 2.5 HDD can deliever the maximum 150mb/s, wich will mean any loading screen should not take longer than 3-4 seconds, let's say 10 seconds... on hhd or ssd alike XD
3. I would say rather take a 2 TB HDD instead of a 1TB SSD, and even if money doesn't matter rather take the cheapest 2TB ssd instead of a highend model.
High-end SSDs for sure would be wasted, thankfully they still make a difference! In my main console I currently have a 1 TB SSD that I only paid $20 for, so I have no issue with it being wasted in a Xbox 360.
However I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the nice benefits! With about 400 games currently on it the biggest differences I have noticed have been the index at the beginning of Aurora loading extremely quickly, as well as loading into any game from Aurora.
Scrolling through all of the games in Aurora is also an absolute breeze, and I did not fully appreciate that until I went back to an HDD system. Aurora running on HDD with hundreds of games will really start to hiccup when you scroll.
@@MrMario2011that's quite possible, but since it's actually Sata I... it makes no sense/ the higher cost is not justified by the minimal advantages. If you get it basically for free or don't need to watch the money or have an ssd laying around for sure... else rather get a hdd.
Moding your Xbox 360 is harder compared to PS3 :/
That makes it more fun!
It is but to me the 360 is way better once fully modded. It's much easier to use on the software side I feel like.
@@JoshLineberry I was unable to save my games in the emulators on my 360. My modded PS3 had no problem saving in emulation.
@@projectmayhem6898 the emulators aren't the best on either the PS3 or the 360. I use retroarch based emulators on the 360 and they work fine but if I want emulation I would use a modded original Xbox over either of these 2 because their emulators aren't on par with the emulators on the og Xbox.
@@JoshLineberry I have been well impressed by the emulation variety available on my modded Wii U. Even though my modded Switch claims to run more consoles the Wii U actually works for more of them.
I just modded the xbox I tried to format my ssd but it does not let me. (The mod work I also put aurora on it) what did i do wrong?
So even if I use official Western Digital drive (like WD Scorpio Black Series WD5000BPKX) from Hddhackr. I can't just have it format it from XB360 RGH and just slap it into a retail (unmodded) XB360 once formatted? Will it work or still get a console ban.
You have to have a security sector for the retail side to detect it.
@@MrMario2011 If I clone the whole HDD to an SSD (a cloning with clonezilla "Linux" ) like full cloning including sectors and partitions table , it's possible instead of reupload all the games and Al that jazz of aurora, dashboard and so on , would work ?
