    And most importantly the Parking. Safe parking.
    1) Switch to N
    2) Use handbrake
    3) Release the brake
    4) Switch to P
    Now the entire car weight is on the Handbrake and NOT on the transmission!
    This is even more important if you park on the hills!!

    most cars from the 90's onwards have a ratcheting mechanism in the transmission to protect it if you do put it in reverse/park while moving.
    Putting a moving car in park or reverse while it's moving obviously isn't good for it, but it's not going to instantly destroy it.

    • @walther89
      @walther89 Před 3 lety

      Instantly yep you dont get nothing, but over time problems will occur, always change when complete stop. simple as that

  • @lp2565

    Always heard that on the ZF five speed auto in my E46 that you should never idle in park for an extended amount of time. If you have to have the car parked, and idling, then put the car in neutral, with the parking brake engaged. Supposedly the transmission does not circulate coolant when the car is in park? What is your opinion Dean?

    • @LeverPhile
      @LeverPhile Před 4 lety +6

      Anytime the engine is running the ATF is circulating, regardless of gear setting. It definitely circulates when in park. You idle it in neutral or park for extended time period to keep from stressing the torque converter for no reason.

  • @jmeelo
    @jmeelo Před 4 lety +5

    Regarding point #2 - don't put the car in drive and the hand brake on and leaving it there in gear and not actually moving. What's the difference between that and being at a red light with the car in drive and foot on the brake? I understand the concept but 99% of people are going to have the car in drive and foot on the brake at a red light

    • @LeverPhile
      @LeverPhile Před 4 lety +1

      Lol, none really but at a traffic light you are expecting to move soon so leaving it in gear serves a purpose. If you are parked waiting for some other reason and you won't need to move at any moment it makes more sense to put it in neutral while you are waiting. It's a judgement call ...

    • @wa__een

    • @Saif0412
      @Saif0412 Před 2 lety

      Keeping the gearstick in D with foot on brake at traffic lights does not cause any damage to the gearbox whatsoever. No idea what this guy is talking about. I have driven several BMW's with ZF gearboxes, with the recent one being the 6 speed in my E90 335i. None of them had any gearbox issues because you were stopped at a traffic light in D mode 🤦‍♂️

  • @dorrisdormouse
    @dorrisdormouse Před 3 lety +2

    lol well my e46 328i 1998 vehicle from Saudi is a bit more special, it has 3 modes so i dont need to worry about the stick forgotten in the Sport mode as you mention here, as it switches automatically between manual sport (same feature as on paddles on wheel on cars like r8 c63 ferrari) and automatic sport. so unless in sport mode i move stick up or down it stays in the automatic sport mode and if move it up or down it goes in manual sport. common sense. same i never had issues when switching back to drive mode my car when switched to drive it stays in drive comfort regular mode it doesnt show up the ds. it shows up when in auto mode. so unless i move the stick up or down in sport mode the car changes gears automatically - that's my point

  • @iTCXtreme

    When I was taught to repair auto transmissions at a main dealer training facility the instructor took great delight in scaring the c r a p out of a car full of technicians by slamming the gear selector into reverse at 70mph! Nothing happens because most auto transmissions won't engage reverse or park until the car is below 15mph! Tried it myself afterwards many times while dealing with transmissions in a main dealer.

When I first started driving I was manual through and through because I thought a manual would be a lot smoother and more fuel efficient but I’ve driven a few autos and realised how easy and smooth the driving experience was so I’m considering an auto E92 because I can still change gears Manually if I want to. Just wanna know how smooth the gearbox is? It’s not slow and clunky like older autos? Plus not totally clued up on how the manual/sport mode works, can you engage/disengage manual mode whilst you’re driving or do you have to be stationary?

      yeah along as you're in drive your can just knock it over and be in sport/manual and vice versa

    I’ve always used neutral at lights to take the tension off the box.
    Mine has an annoying problem though. It’s slipping for the first 1-2 miles from cold. Seems temperature related as I’ve noticed it’s worse at 4am leaving work.

    Hello, thank you so much for your videos. I was wondering if you could help me. I recently changed the solenoids, sealing sleeves, and the bridge seal, now the only thing that works is the reverse. I have INPA software and the 4f81 code is coming up. I hear a rattling sound form the transmission sometimes it will catch for a second to go forward, and it will sometimes pull forward in manual mode 2nd and 6th just a little, enough to kinda pull back into the garage but it even stopped doing that.

    The other day i was trying to move my car down the drive with the door open, it went from drive to park by itself and really jerked to a stop with a "Roll away protection" message on the dash. Should I have setup as if i was going to drive away? I just wanted to roll a couple of metres :( EDIT: I needed to see the edge of the drive - that's why I had the door open.

    Does using manual mode on daily basis will wear your transmission more than D mode?
    My E39 sometimes got Gear warning when I'm using manual mode. Only use it so it can change the gear on minimal RPM.
    The warning light then turns off later which I don't understand why. I don't feel any strange feeling on the trans while the warning is on tho.

      that’s actually a problem in the wiring inside the gearbox assembly. are ur sport and manual mode still working ?if not just look up no ds mode on e90 and they will show u what wires are cut due to a common problem in the e90 wiring placement.

    • @ghostal1873
      @ghostal1873 Před 2 lety

      Yeah you can go, just switch it to Sport, you dont need to stop to put it in Sport, but dont play with transmission so much putting in sport and then going to normal and then sport playing with it if you know what im saying, it can damage by time transmission and it will cost a hell to repair it or better change it to a new transmission because repairing it doesnt show good results

    Bullshit in BMW u can put fast form D to the R because you have differential which disconnects the shaft and the gearbox ;) Only in cars with front-wheel drive u can't do that :) What u can't do in ZF is fast switch from D to the P when you still rolls a little bit ;)
