    I've just changed my oil and pan/filter on my auto f31 n47 318d on ramps on my driveway. Used bimmerlink app to monitor transmission oil temp following fill process off ZF website. Easy enough. Gear changing feels a lot smoother. Good video Dean. Its dissapointing BMW service intervals are not as well designed as the cars. Shouldn't have to trawl the internet for accurate servicing info. Good job we have Dr Dean 👍

    I quickly worked that out on my E38 when I got a transmission shop to change the fluid. It was black and sludgy. Well 18 years later it's still going strong at 210k with a couple of changes in between.

    Dean I have a e60 Diesel and I contacted ZF in Dortmund back in 2013 and they recommended that the gearbox oil is replaced between 80 - 120000km so once this was confirmed I book to have my vehicle gearbox service carried out by them.
    I took the ferry to Holland and drove to ZF in Dortmund and had this carried out so as you state in your video the transmission fluid do need changing during a set period as verified by the gearbox manufacturer.

    Nice one Dean cheers.
    I’ve got a 630i lci with n53 engine and auto gearbox and a problem I can’t work out.
    When engine is cold, if you stop, and hold the brake while it’s in drive, when you release the brake, rather than smoothly creeping forward, nothing happens for a moment then it thumps forward harshly.
    However if I put it into sport mode, into manual 1st gear, or don’t press the brake (like if I use the hand brake to hold the car), it’s fine. Also, once I’ve done 2 or 3 miles and it warms up, it’s also fine then too.
    It almost feels like there is a fuel saving thing where holding the brake on, it disengages the gearbox or torque converter, and doesn’t smoothly release it. Apart from that, the gearbox is really nice and smooth.
    I’ve had the fluid and pan changed, and had the fluid level checked, by two different garages, and nothing has helped. Any ideas what could be causing this please? I’m out of ideas!

    Always change the fluid. People have issues because they either wait until it has symptoms or they do the change wrong.

    It is literally called planned obsolosence.
    Im a Toyota driver. I have one daily Toyota Auris and 94 model 2 liter Turbo Toyota Celica. Both super reliable as whole world know.
    My auntie has 2014 model BMW 114i (F-20) with 1.6 liter 100 HP and the engine has made by PSA (Peugeot and Citroen) My uncle has 2018 Audi A1 and he will sell this car and get her car instead. I have fixed a lot of things on this car for my auntie. The car had a airbag recall so Belgian BMW told me that will take a little bit longer so I decided to go to Germany-Aachen for this. They ordered me and all expenses belong to BMW.
    So I was there for airbag replacement (Failed Takata Airbags) and I have asked them the Timing Chain and they told me if the engine starts rattling then you can bring the car but it did not make sense to me at all.
    And I have asked them about transmission oil and before I have told them that ''I dont believe that lifetime oil in any shape of form. If there are moving parts there will be corrosion.'' and the mechanic checked his computer and said that transmission oil is not in interval category. But then he said if I struggle to gear up or down they can change. But what I have realized is that he only checks on computer and says whatever the company policy telling him to say customers. That is what I have realized.
    Because Toyota giving us those changes such as Diesel Filter , Transmission Fluid or Steering Fluid etc. And if we do it we get an additional warranty up to 10 years.
    I am not gonna lie but BMW is like Apple. The place I have been names Kohl-BMW and people were so friendly and place was really filled with expensive seats and coffee Barista Machines and luxury offices and flashy flashy shiny materials and cars etc.
    Do you think that my uncle needs to replace his transmission oil and timing chain ? Which timing chain is really pricy. Also he needs to maintain this car and normally costs 350 euros but in Germany he will get 20 percent discount because car is older than 5 years. Some sort of Promotion.
    Your opinion is important for me and I will also be informing him. Thank you so much for the video

    I believe is FCP Euro anyway here in America that has a kid that is designed to push the fluid out of the transmission to get more of the old fluid out I do suggest that because you get about 85% of the fluid out the only fluid that is left is the half of the torque converter but the other thing it is very important to use a good transmission fluid you generally want one that is a little bit thicker than what came in it if you go back with Factory oil your chances of losing the transmission are actually quite High especially if you have a lot of mileage Valvoline makes a good synthetic oil for transmissions that works great in ZF Transmissions but there are other fluids out there that do a good job as well

  • @vincentrobinette1507
    @vincentrobinette1507 Před 8 měsíci

    If you do a "tune" you've voided the warranty anyway. CHANGE THE OIL!! I feel like any manufacturer that "voids the warranty" if you change fluid, is just trying to set up "planned obsolescence". All moving parts have a break-in period. I recommend the first change of engine oil and filter after just the first few hundred miles, and transmission oil and pickup filter screen after the first couple thousand miles. Once the parts have bedded in, change regularly, and drive for 300,000+ miles! The only recommendation I have, is to make absolutely sure you use the right grade of transmission fluid. You have a little more latitude with engine oil, just make sure the weight and API classification is right for the engine.

    BMW dealership in Maryland, refuse to change my transmission fluid, stating lifetime fluid. Would only service transmission if I had a known problem or issue. Looks like they only want to change out the whole physical transmission (high profit). Do not want to change the T fluid because it is such as difficult and complicated process. PS I had to take back my BMW car to get the wheels re-balanced, after paying $109 for wheel rotation and balance. My front wheels were shaking my crazy! 😳

    Hello, I recently purchased a 2006 325I with an automatic transmission and less than 16,000 original miles. The car was manufactured and purchased by the original owner in 2015. The car is now approximately 16 years old. I have well-documented maintenance records primarily concerning oil changes and brake fluid flushes. The BMW dealership told me the transmission fluid was good for 100,000 miles. However, I agree with what you stated in the video. Should I flush my transmission and replace the filter now? Or, should I wait until 50,000 miles?

    • @vincentrobinette1507
      @vincentrobinette1507 Před 8 měsíci

      My recommendation is not to flush, but rather, drain and clean the pan, replace the pickup filter screen. Drive it for a while, just to see if you actually need to spend the money on a new solenoid block. sometimes, replacing the pickup filter restores flow through the oil pump, allowing proper pressure to the valve body and solenoids, restoring proper shifting.

    Hi Dean,
    Asked other day about the Fuel Tank Gas filter on my E46 and E90 the other day, Appreciated your response but managed to check that out yet due to the weather but just seen this about the gearbox. Mine are both M47 2.0 diesel 6 speed Manual Gearbox. The E46 126k had since 82k so doubt gearbox oil been changed and the E90 had from new and on 57k so I know that's not been done. Is it more of a straight forward job on the Manual Gearboxes or are they still dodgy to change the fluids? As my E90 I've had off the road for last 2 years using the E46 as my daily but want to put it back on road soon, before I do want to change EVERYTHING on it even though full service 2k ago as had to have a new turbo at 55k on the E90! Mitsubishi shite.. anyway had full service all fluids and filters but bit gearbox. So was thinking of doing this on both tbh. Is it advisable to change the manual gearbox oil or leave as is? I didn't even know it was a dodgy subject/risky issue, or is that just on the auto boxes? Was even considering attempting it myself but having watched this I just shit myself and thought again on it..
    Any advice would be great mate!
    Also when I put my E90 M47 manual diesel back on the road it's sat I started for 2+years. Any suggestions on pre-start up procedure like adding any additional oil anywhere changing any belts or anything like that prior to the first start!? Possibly even whether the full service would be wise before even starting it or am I over thinking it.. eg. Should j just stick half a tank of diesel in with some diesel fuel system cleaner and new battery and fire it up and not worry about oiling priming anything or whatever (was just concerned incase any moisture ingressed into the cylinders from condensation that could cause any piston or cylinder damage if something else might need to be done.. again having had it from new ALREADY had to replace the turbo with an uprated one and only on 57k I don't want to blow the engine on start up after 2 years.
    So any advice on this and regards the 6speed manual gearbox fluid on each much appreciated mate.
    Ps. Another great video Dean, thanks!

    Kind regards,

    I will say though years ago I used to work at a shop here where I live and we had a customer that every 3000 Miles put $20 in a jar and believe it or not the car that he was driving had almost 300,000 miles on it and the original Engine with the original oil and I thought that was completely insane but it kept going
