The scooped sound in the middle position when the varitone in position 1 is due to the pickups being out of phase. This presents itself when these guitars are wired to mono. Some people leave it that way, others will flip a pickup magnet where it will behave like a 335 in the middle position but the varitone will work. Disclaimer: I can’t hold a candle to Tim in either knowledge or ability, but I do have a 1960 345 wired to mono. And now back to our regularly scheduled program 😊.

Tim, I do follow you on FB and I think you're a knowledgeable tasteful player, but I have to correct you on the 'hollow' sound that you get when you play both pickups at the same time on that vintage ES-345.
I own a 1958 Es-345 that my parents bought from my uncle in 1965 for me as he replaced it with a Gibson Byrdland model at the time
That guitar is wired in stereo and each pickup went into a seperate amp channel. My uncle gave me a stereo Gibson amp to use it with, that had 2 seperate open backed speaker cabinets that folded together when not used.
The varitone switch on the #1 position is basically a bypass for it.
What actually gives it that hollow sound is that the neck pickup has a reversed polarity magnet in it, and there is also a filtered sound if you use the varitone pos 2-6).
It is different than just reversing the wiring on the pickups.. if you try to use it in mono or use the stereo double wires in the same channel with the middle position( ie both pickups on) , you will get a hollow sound. Used to drive me crazy until I foumd out what caused it. I've always use it with 2 seperate amps , an amp like a '67 bassman with 2 channels or an old Ampeg Gemini II.
My bridge pickup unfortunately crapped out on me in the 80's and now I have an early 80's Bill Lawrence in there, but it's the same issue. Someone had recommended a Lollar low winding but to have the magnet reversed to match the original PAF in the neck position. This way.I can use a single channel amp. Keep up.the great videos...

Can’t get enough-of that funky stuff!🎶 When I was teaching guitar, the hardest thing to get across to students was keeping that down-up rhythmic thing going. I did it most of my playing life-nobody showed me how to do it; I just kept at it until it sounded right. It amazed me how many students didn’t want to work on it-they would rather chug fuzzed-out power chords, I guess!
I don’t think it’s the Varitone that’s making the two-pickup setting sound out of phase, although a couple of positions kind of sound that way-I think it’s actually wired out of phase. (or one of the pickups had its magnet flipped.) Gibson was futzing around with out of phase sounds in the ‘50s and ‘60s-look at the ES-5/Switchmaster, for instance. In 1973 I bought a ‘61 Epiphone Broadway from the original owner, who said he’d never modified anything on it, but the two-pickup setting was out of phase. Drove me nuts, as I prefer the combination of pickups to be in phase. I wound up trading the Epi (made by Gibson in their factory) for a ‘59 Fender Telecaster in 1975.

Hi. Lovely playing Tim. Apparently a good proportion of early 345s have one of the pickups with the magnet turned round. In sterio doesnt go out of phase (untill the sound comes out of the amp). Or on this one it could be the change to mono - the wiring circuit is all 'back to front' with the pickups going to the switch first. Doesnt matter in practice as rolling one volume down evens things up, although there is still the volume drop. Good blondes rediculously rare. Great players guitars. SteveH

No, you do not have to be any age or above in order to recognize Richie's guitar part from "Hush". Please do not jump to conclusions I was 15 years old in 1995 and just beginning to play guitar myself when I first heard it. All you have to do at any age, including age 3, is tune in for classic rock broadcasting of any type. You're as likely to catch the Deep Purple version of "Hush" if you stay tuned in as you are likely to catch (the super-saturated) "Smoke on the Water".
From the time I began learning to play in 95 to the present, I was always stoked on the idea that I would get a 3355 or a 345 like this one. Instead, I made my way through a bunch of Epiphone semi-hollow or hollow models and ultimately found my way to a 1980 Yamaha SA-2000. That one bears a very close resemblance to this 345, and I would dig it if one like it were featured during a GOTD upload.
