    Primer does very little for corrosion protection because it is porous it’s what allows paint to grab onto it well. It’s the paint that seals the moisture out not the primer.

    In case you’re not aware of it, though I think you likely are, they have a number of different wheels for different materials and different surfaces you’re trying to remove, or sand. They have a steel wire wheel, or drum is what I think they call these things, that’s for aggressive removal of rust and scale.

      @@10swatkins they last OK to me. It's marketed as rust and paint stripper discs. It's carbide fiber. It comes in all kinds of different discs. Go on Google and put in rust and paint stripper disc and then hit the shopping tab. You'll see lots of the stuff. Now what's good and what isn't I can't say because I haven't tried all of it. I've just used the discs with a shank in a drill.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  Před měsícem

      One of the things I liked about it was the ability to somewhat conform to the shape of the metal.. It was not perfect but it did a better job on the flat spots of the 4x4 than my belt sanders did.. That's one of the reasons I went to flap disks... When they make the 4x4 the flat of the sides always "concave" from the forming process.

      I have several different types of flap wheels but they are all a little faster on getting off the mill scale, some much better and some just ok.. The problem is the great ones are expensive. The other problem is they all may be faster , till they wear down. Then you have to change them and that starts adding up... This machines wheel lasted 200 time longer than a flap wheel would have...

    Do not know why you do not like powder coating. Worked at JP/NASA for 37 years. Built a lot of ground support equipment out of steel or aluminum that we powder coated.. Items spent a lot of time in Florida outside or in no temperature controlled buildings. Items did not rust or corrode.

Looked great on the outside until it started falling off.... I had a trailer, looked great for two years then the paint started coming off in sheets... ONLY way to fix it was to remove all the powder coating , kill the rust and repaint it... Really fun job on 24 foot long dump trailer... Including the bottom...
      Do you want me to mention the loader on the front of my tractor? Same damn thing. starting to come off in sheets.... If it was just paint I could easily fix it..... Powder coating hides the problem and you can't tell until it starts to happen...

    Steve, I got that same buffer from HF. There is quite a variety of heads for those things on Amazon. You had the paint stripping head I do believe, so far my favorite is a flap wheel type with Zirconium abrasive, it really peels the rust and scale off. The only thing I don't like about it, is it's the single nastiest tool I own, it makes a mess.

      I saw the HF version of that tool first - I was wondering who made the original that they were copying, because I didn't see any of the major tool brands have one of those in their lineup. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they're both made in the same factory, by TTI

    • @steamfan7147
      @steamfan7147 Před měsícem +1

      @@10swatkins I typed out a reply and it disappeared, but they last a couple hours , the trick is to use light pressure and let the tool do the work. I had bought some a couple years ago off Amazon. The Zirconium ones were $25ish back then, but all I see now are Aluminum oxide. Hilti makes some Zircon ones, but they are $80 most places, kinda pricey, but still cheaper than a sandblast rig.

      It wouldn't surprise me if they all came from the same factory. My HF one is nearly identical to the one Steve is using. The Chinese do copy each other though and the cheaper off-color plastic ones I don't think are in the same league as the HF/Eastwood models.
