I just got a 2019 Accord Hybrid EXL a couple of weeks ago and your videos have been a tremendous help explaining everything the owner's manual leaves out, thank you. I'm originally from NY City so you can talk as fast as you want and it's fine with me.
A couple comments as I listen to this video: The car uses as much regenerative braking as it can when you press the brake pedal. The paddles affect how much regenerative braking gets used when "coasting"; that is, when you aren't pressing the brake or gas pedals. It's the equivalent of engine braking, with downshifting.
Music on your thumb drive can be in folders and sub-folders. The system will scan the drive to make a catalog of all songs/albums/artists. But sometimes it takes an inexplicably long time to scan; before it is done, all you have access to in the browsing menu is "folders." So it obviously uses them. :)
ECON and SPORT modes don't affect revs - in fact, "revs" has no meaning in this hybrid. In fact, it isn't a CVT at all. Honda calls it "eCVT," for "electronic CVT." But "Virtual CVT" might be a better name, since the gas engine is usually not connected to the wheels at all. Only to a generator. The modes do affect how quickly the car responds to stomping on the gas pedal. Any sound you hear is because the electric motor needs more generator power, and it does this sooner in SPORT.
You do not need to press the EV button to get into EV Drive. In fact, it probably hurts mileage if you do. The car is quite capable of driving as an EV, and chooses to do so on its own. The button selects "EV Mode," which makes it decide to do so if it can.
The efficiency *gain* of any hybrid comes from running the engine at a steady level of power. That level (it's 34 HP) happens to be more than you need for cruising. "Stop-and-go" doesn't affect that. And it works on the highway, too. I typically get 55+ mpg in a 40-mile drive through Washington DC to see the grandkids. However, a hybrid *loses* less to braking in stop-and-go. Still, the more stopping you do, the more gas you will use. In any hybrid.
The "Steering Required" warning did not indicate a problem with the Lane Keeping system. The car did not like that your hands were not on the wheel.
55 mpg’s is really good. I was thinking about the Insight but if the Accord can pull those numbers then it’s worth a look. Very informative comment, thanks!
@@JJ-cg3rn I don't want to mislead you - that was an average. And it is curiously different in the morning - where I don't hit the 10-20 mph traffic until the end - and the afternoon - when it comes first. Last week's run was 61.9 mpg into town, and 51.4 mpg back out. That averages over 55 mpg. But I don't exceed about 65 mph, even on the clear stretches of highway. This is about the predominant speed. And I don't tend to change speeds a lot. Many people who drive 80+ mph and do a lot of speeding up and slowing down complain that they don't get rated mileage.
@@jeffjo8732 what you’re saying makes sense. Some people will say they aren’t getting great mileage but are also doing 70-80 mph. Can’t have it both ways… my commute (in NJ/ Rt 18) is about 45 miles one way. Mornings move a little quicker but the evenings some days are bumper to bumper creeping along. Hybrids are built for that. Again, thank you the information!
Thank you so much! I just got the 2020 hybrid yesterday. It is my first Honda and my first hybrid. Your video helped A LOT. Now I’m even more excited to drive my new car and test out some of these great features. 😊
Thanks. I pick up my 2021 Accord Hybrid EX-L on Friday. I’m excited!
Congrats on your new Honda!
Just got mine 2021 in white hybrid ex-l 😍
hey, you have done a really great job. Answered many of my questions that I had before. I want to say you Thanks a lot and I appreciate your efforts.
very helpful and informative -- thanks !
Thanks for the review. You helped me understand how the hybrids work and now I’m leaning towards a hybrid on my next purchase since I’m in the market for a new vehicle. Just not sure if it’ll be a car or a SUV just yet; if SUVs come in hybrids. Still researching.
Glad you enjoyed it Thanks for watching!
"Let There Be Drums" by Sandy Nelson? That was a great one! Thanks for this excellent all-inclusive video. (Although I need to listen at 75% speed.)
Smooth & Simple review ! Nice job.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for posting this video! I’ve been looking at this exact trim level for the longest. In regards of the previous year & same trim, what’s the difference?
1:25: Radar IS NOT behind the emblem like the Honda Clarity, Pilot, Odyssey, etc. It is behind the lower grill (Front bumper). The Camera is as you said, inside the vehicle behind the windshield. Other than that, a excellent informative video.
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Since you make videos about Honda, I would like to know which is a better buy and why? Honda Civic EX-L vs Honda Insight EX
Size and features are relatively the same. So, it really depends on the amount of driving you do. If you drive quite a bit I would go with the Insight.
which is better crv or accord
Hi ✌️ what about digital speedometer 🤔
Hi Justin, I have a 2020 Honda Accord , inside the glove compartment there is a button on the left hand side , do you know what that does ? Thank you !
Send me a text or email with a pic of it. I may be able to help out. My info is in the about section on my page. I am betting you are talking about the trunk main switch. It disables the trunk release button on the remote transmitter and the trunk release button on the trunk lid to protect luggage in the trunk.
Justin Fuller ok will do ! Thanks for responding!
Debating between the hybrid exl 2.0 or the exl 2.0. Which one you recommend? I was leaning hybrid but I don't fully trust Honda's hybrid reliability to be honest.
Sounds like you are more comfortable with the non-hybrid. If you are going to drop all the money I would recommend you go with what you are most comfortable with.
This system was first produced in 2014. There weren't many sold, but reliability has been excellent.
What are the paddle shifters for? No glove box light!
The paddle shifters allow you to upshift and down shift the vehicle. The use of down shifting is important, because it allows for regenerative braking. This will help build a charge faster, so you can use all electric mode.
The system will always use as much regenerative braking as it can when you use the brake pedal. The best way to understand the paddles, is to compare them to engine braking with a manual or automatic transmission, as you downshift. They determine how much regenerative braking is used when you are not pressing either the brake or gas pedal.
Paddle shifters have nothing to do with battery regen
That is precisely what they do - affect battery regen.
Regenerative braking is activated in two ways in this car. Pressing the brake pedal is the obvious one. Most manufacturers have had difficulty integrating regen with the friction brakes. The brake pads have to take over as the car slows, since the braking force depends on speed. This is why most reviews of HEVs talk about "grabby brakes." Honda nailed it - you can't feel the transition at all.
The other method is coasting, when you take your foot off of the accelerator pedal but don't press the brake pedal. A conventional gas car would slow due to engine braking (assuming you don't shift to neutral). An electric vehicle (and yes, these Honda hybrids are electric vehicles, just not exclusively _battery_ electric vehicles) will mimic that effect with - wait for it - regenerative braking. The paddles set the level of drag this applies during coasting, and so the amount of energy recouped.
And don't let Tesla owners brag about "one-pedal driving." That wasn't an intentional feature, Tesla gave up trying to solve the integration issue. So their brake pedal has nothing to do with regen, it is all coasting with the accelerator pedal released or only lightly pressed. To be fair, they have stronger regen brakes so it is harder to integrate. But a system like Honda implements with these paddles would increase a Tesla's range by a small, but not insignificant, amount.
@@jeffjo8732 interesting.
on the front it's not a "Full LED setup." The high beams are halogen. C'mon man.
