  • A trip to the fells of East Cumbria this week to film a very smart John Deere 6610 and Bunning Lowlander in action spreading the smelly stuff! Hard to believe the JD is 25-years-old as it is in such immaculate condition, so well looked after. The Bunning Lowlander Farmstar 60 was purchased new last year and built to the family’s spec with much broader than usual tyres (the widest that would go through the farm gates), bigger brakes and a heavy duty axle as the farm has some very steep land. Loading in the yard is a Matbro TS290 telehandler from the same era as the JD, a model not very common these days as I believe they only manufactured the TS290 for a couple of years. Three more classic tractors parked up include a pair of Internationals and a MF 300 range, (anyone want to hazard a guess at the models? No prizes but have a go!) The farmer was filling the spreader to half capacity as there has been an awful lot of rain in Cumbria recently (even more so in the fells) and the ground was still a little soft underfoot. These were the first loads of the year to be spread and with a very full midden to empty after the long winter, the weather will hopefully stay dry over the coming weeks and it’ll be an empty yard again.
    Filmed in Cumbria April 2024.

      There certainly is. A full fleet of classics (I think nine in total!), MF, IH/ Case-IH and of course the JD which is the newest tractor on the farm. Not a modern in sight but the classics do just as good a job and at a fraction of the cost! Cheers, David.

    Hi David, bit late in responding as I have been building a greenhouse for my neighbour. What a pleasure it was to see this farm with a fleet of classics still in working clothes, but having said that, the John Deere 6610 looks in fantastic condition considering its 25 y/o and working hard. Love the fact that the Bunning Spreader looks a bit dumpy (like myself) but its spec is sensible considering the landscape its working in, and nice to see he was being loaded sensibly with it being wet. Love these rear discharge spreaders as they make a great job, and certainly far better than the Howard Rotaspreaders we used to have, especially on a very windy day in a tractor with no rear window! 😂. Never had any exposure to any of Matbro equipment, although have seen a few around over the years which are still working. I am sure someone told me that they were sold out to JD but not sure. As for the models of the MF and the Internationals, you got me on that one David, but they do look good for there age. Thanks again for another wonderful video. Cheers Fraser.

      Hi Fraser, you sound like you’ve been hard at work? Oh it’s a lovely farm, one of my favourites to visit not only because the owners are so welcoming but as you say a lovely fleet in their working clothes but really well looked after too. Oh the John Deere 6610 is a beauty, a lovely tractor that’s just a delight to see (looks even better standing next to it). You’ve described the Bunning spreader perfectly, it has been specially built that way for the terrain in the fells. Oh yes rear discharge spreader, open window, wind blowing the wrong way, not good! You’re correct, JD did take over the Matbro brand for a few years, again a fairly rare machine certainly up in these parts. I’ll let you in on a secret Fraser, the MF has already been guessed, it’s a MF 362 but the Internationals are a 475 on the scraper and an 885XL (don’t you let anyone in on the secret!) which featured in the haymaking video I made last year which if If I remember correctly was the first video of mine you commented on! Always great to hear from you Fraser, I’ve just got back from filming today including my first silage video of 2024 and some lovely old Fords at work so lots of editing to do! Take care, cheers, David.

    IH 885XL & 454/574 ? does the farm still have the 1056XL ?

    • @davidwinthrop7077
      @davidwinthrop7077  Před 2 měsíci

      Bang on with the 885XL Dan and split the difference with the 454/574 and you’ve got a 475! Almost perfect attempt though and thanks for having a crack at it. It certainly still does have the 1056XL and a 956XL to keep it company, hopefully I’ll get to film them working this summer. Cheers, David.

      Know the farm through your vids and classic tractor mag, there 1056xl is a beast, was going to guess 475 but wasn't sure. I'm currently restoring a late model 674 q cab

      Oh yes the 1056 certainly is a beast Dan especially with that aftermarket turbo fitted! What a sound! Your 674 will be a lovely tractor when it’s finished, always one of my favourite 70s classics. Must be on an R or even an S plate if it’s a late one?
