You are right, día de muertos it's a tradition that we learn as kids and there is a day for the dead children and another for the adults.
@@carloslara5844 pixar make movies for all ages. Even if they are too young, they will enjoy the colors, the music and the characters. they will rewatch it a few years later and understand more. even as an adult it resonates. Maybe even more so.

Xolos (the dog) were considered guides of the souls of the deceased in pre-Hispanic times in Mexico, so Dante can go to the land of the dead. This dog was very sacred to the Aztecs and today it is a luxury dog because there are not many of them
There are a ton of them. They literally come in standard, medium, and mini sizes. They're "luxury" depending on where you get them from and from who, just like any other dog breed considered "exotic". They're not even close to being rare.

Funny how both dogs and cats in different ancient civilizations all represented death. For the Egyptians it was Anubis, which was a jackal but still from the canine family.
There's tons of stray ones in Mexico.
My favorite details at the end of the movie:
49:15 Notice that Hector is wearing shoes when he crosses over. The family made him shoes as a way of accepting him back into the family.
Also, he's walking more normally now. In the beginning and the middle of when Miguel met Hector, he was walking in a very shaky and jangly way. But when he's not forgotten anymore, his skeleton isn't "dying" and he's walking tall and proudly with the family, hand in hand.

That last scene With mama coco and Miguel hit me hard in theater I cried remembering my grandma that passed, she had alzheimer's
Coco was actually the last movie I ever saw with my Grandmother in a theater. After, we watched all other films from home when she was unable to walk.
Remember Me was the last song I ever sang to her as she rested on her bed. She passed away just before the pandemic began.
My girlfriend lost her grandmother recently. So I sang Remember Me to her in honor of her Nonna.
It's truly one of the most special songs in existence.

Oh I’m sure the ladies don’t know but Dante the dog is a breed of dog called Xoloitzcuintli but they call them the Xolo dogs. They are a breed that the Aztecs believed would accompany your soul in the afterlife to guide you to your destination. They are also seen as a spiritual god like being because they look like the Egyptian God Anubis who was the God of death and the afterlife. If you google photos you will see how the Xolo dog looks exactly like Anubis which is kind of creepy.
yeah actually there even a myth that says that to cross to the afterlife/underworld you have to swim across a river and the one who helps you cross is actually a xolo dog; and if you are not nice to dogs you dont get any help and never cross to the afterlife
This is mostly correct, but Xolos are connected to the underworld by the Aztec god Axolotl (I may have remembered the name incorrectly tbh), not Anubis. You are correct in that Anubis is the god of death in Egyptian mythology, but the Aztecs would have had no knowledge of Anubis. But Xolos do look similar so it's easy to get mixed up. Otherwise you are spot on with your mythology knowledge! 👌

I did not say the Xolo dog breed were directly connected to the Egyptian God of the afterlife Anubis, people now look at hieroglyphics and pictures of Anubis and compare the face and head to that of the Xolo dog and wonder how 2 different entities on different parts of the planet look identical and are associated with the afterlife. If I stated that the Xolo is directly connected to Anubis then I must have stated this by accident because you are right in Aztec mythology the Aztec god Xolotl made the Xolo dog to guide the souls of the dead through Mictlan which was known as the Underworld.

I didn't cry with the opening of"Up",TBH,but I did cry 3 times the 1st time I watched"Coco":when Miguel discovered who Hector was,when Hector was dying and when Miguel sang"Remember Me"to Mama Coco.😭😭😭

My problem with"Up"is that everyone treats it like it's a masterpiece because of those first 5 minutes when _most_ of the movie is just...MEH.😕There are _some_ emotional scenes(like the one you mentioned),but the movie as a whole I don't think it's *that* good. I'm Mexican and I loved this movie, it's so well done, there's little to nothing wrong with it. The part that made me cry the most was when we find out Coco died that really got me

I'm a Mexican American, born here, but with Mexican parents. And, this movie truly meant SOOOOO much to our entire community. The filmmakers basically restarted production once they got Latino and Latina writers to contribute. Love it.

In the pre-Hispanic real tradition "Mexica", photos were not used (obviously), that is a modern element in current offerings.
Clay figures or even the skulls themselves were used to remember their deceased.
Paper mache or candy / chocolate skulls are also used with the names of the deceased.
But what really opens the way for your relatives the way to the world of the living is the smoke of the copal and the marigold flower -represented in the film with the bridge of petals-.
Obviously they are "licenses" that Disney took to make the movie easy for everyone to say.
It makes me happy to see that you appreciated this beautiful tribute to my culture.

This movie never fails to make me cry. I love that this is a great introduction to death for many young children. It showed my nephews that they can kiss their family that has passed but also to remember them with joy and that life goes on after death for them. It just bring so much peace.
And the Dogs name is an obvious reference to “The inferno” novel by Dante Alighieri, the Italian poet.
Coco is an amazing movie and the perfect representation of Day of de Dead meaning. I’m so proud to be Mexican and grown up with this traditions.
Fact: Since Coco, Pixar studios make an ofrenda every year and the share the photos of they families was passed away.

Perfect. I assume this movie helped to stop fearing the death and celebrate life and rejoice in old good memories.
It's more of a reference to the Divine Comedy as a whole, where Dante visits Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.
Plus sometime after the film Coco was added to Mickey’s Phillarmagic with Un Poco Loco.
This is one of few Pixar movies that got me to cry. I'm a very hard man to break, but (spoiler alert), whenever Hector finds out Miguel is his relative it started working it up, then once they got to the flashback of him playing "remember me" with Coco, I broke. To use an analogy: the first part was the dam on its last stand, the second part broke the dam. Any movie that can do that to me, so much respect. 🔥
Same here. My kids couldn’t believe this movie hit me like that. They told me dad we have never seen you cry. I told them if you remember your grandmother passed away a couple years ago so this movie hit me there. Then my kids remembered their grandmother and started crying so we avoided rewatching this amazing movie after seeing it in the movie theaters.
Two Pixar scenes broke me, when I saw them in theaters: seeing Coco on the ofrenda, and Carl reading the book (in Up)

Dia de los muertos in Mexico is a combination of three things:
1 - The prehispanic belief that during one their months, the dead were allowed to return to visit their family. At that time altars were raised with the favorite food, toys and things for their dead to enjoy during their visit. Those things are called "ofrenda".
2 - After the conquest, when trying to make the Catholic religion the official religion of the continent, the priests would make November 2nd, the "day of the faithful dead" (the day to celebrate those who died believing in the Catholic credo) the day to celebrate their deceased family members. They also introduced baked goods and a special sweet bread is usually eaten a this time, called "pan de muerto".
3 - The current look of the event is a mix between the colorful phrehispanic celebrations with a lot of orange (the color of the season, because of the zempazúchitl flowers, that blossom at this time and the pumpkins) and the looks of "La Catrina", a character created by a political cartoonist (José Guadalupe Posada) from the 19th century, that used to represent their views making everybody look like skeletons.
If you ask most Mexicans, they are not aware of these origins, they only know that by November 2nd they should have their altar with the things that their deceased families enjoyed in the ofrenda, such as pollo con mole, cerveza and tacos, their tombs decorated and enjoy their pan de muerto. Recently there is a meme going around in Mexico that goes "Some one asks a Mexican 'why do you keep claiming Mexican food is the best in the world?' 'Because we are the only country that comes back from the land of dead, just to keep eating!'."
Some people call Dia de Muertos "Mexican Halloween" but unlike Halloween, where they make fun of spooky things, Dia de Muertos is to remember and feel close to your deceased family and friends, not to make fun or treat dead like a scary thing, but just a transition to another state of being.
In Italy (south) we used to have a similar thing on a smaller scale and with some differences: the dead would come on November 1st (I think) to visit their family and would bring sweets or gifts to the children if they've been good. When it happened on weekends families would meet and if they were especially religious they would go to the cimitery. There were no altars or specific decorations though.
The tradition has been slowly dying out. I can't remember any celebration in my family after the '90s.
I don't know where the Italian tradition comes from though.

This movie made everyone cry. And a lot of the culture and stuff was really well done. A few things are having some creative liberties. And the few things that I say are kind of a mistake would be that part when there is a band playing Banda (a music genre), that sounded nothing like Banda, lol. The Remember Me song is a bit too simple with its lyrics. Songs from that era were more creative with their words and rhymes. And Dante turning into an Alebrije, that's not really how those work, or how he was treated as a stray dog in the beginning, when in reality a Xolo is a very praised and even sacred dog here.
But still, a really really good and touching movie! Thanks for watching it!
This is really interesting, I don't know much about the culture tbh (I'm more of a mythology and lore person) so thank you for sharing this, I love learning about this sort of thing. I did want to suggest an interpretation of why Remember Me had simple lyrics; Hector said that he wrote it specifically for Coco, who was a very young child in the flashback. Perhaps he wrote it simpler specifically so Coco could under it better at her young age? He never intended to share the song with the world, so it would have been tailored to Coco's age. But I don't know much about the music or culture here, so I could easily be wrong. That's just what I interpreted it to be.
@@sunfurycommenting1013 that's an inreresting way to explain it. It could also be very valid. But also you can have children songs like the ones by Cri-Cri (a mexican songwritter/singer/composer by the name of Francisco Gabilondo Soler) and his lyrics were really imaginative and, in a certain way, complex. Not that the words would be difficult or the themes but how he would come up with certain rhymes and melodies for some songs. So Remember Me could have been kinda something like that, I feel. Even though it's not really the time period. Still, it is a fine song for today standards. But to be made in the 40's, the lyrics and the music (specially when it had mariachis) didn't sound much as what it could have been.
Coco is one of the few foreign movies that I feel really tried a closer sound to what Mexican music sounds like. But still has it wrong here and there with some sounds and arrangements from something Spanish or simply what people think sounds Mexican. Like that banda moment. Sounds nothing like banda with the exception of the instruments, lol.

I think that the Remember Me song is not that complex because Hector made it exclusively for Coco when she was a little child, he never intended for it to be heard by others. Ernesto used the song the way Hector didn't wanted to after he was murdered.
Yes it is like that in my country Mexico 🇲🇽 each November 2, we celebrate our death people , going to our cementsries and bring with us the food and stuff our death relative used to like when they were lives !! It is a beautiful thing we do to remember our relatives !!!
You celebrate late. Celebration starts on November 1st on goes on until the next day. And it's not just old stuff for relatives we also take new toys to children's graves and such.

When I heard "Remember me" for the first time I did remember an aunt who passed away when I was five and cried, now I cry as well because I remember my grandma who passed away this year. Sometimes I feel like someone rubs with the tip of a finger my back, it sometimes gives me the chills because when I turn there's no one, but I want to believe that's my grandma making me know that she's still taking care of me, I was her favorite grandchild.

I have a grandfather(my mother's dad) I've never met... He passed when my mom was 2... He was also trying to get home... Growing up, my mom always spoke about him like he never died... But now that my mother and most of our family and his family are almost gone, it feels like this movie... it's like we(me and my sisters) need to let our kids know who he is (what little we know about him) all we have is his highschool picture and a picture of him sitting in a lawn chair with my mom in his arms when she was a baby(both smiling)... Raymond Federico... That was his name and that's my son's name (Raymond Federico Romero Jr)...

My heart melted when Miguel let out his mariachi scream reminded me of Simba when he first roared at the hyenas in the Elephant Graveyard in THE LION KING.

This was a great movie. I’m so glad you watched it. Not many watch it. Especially now that the holiday is soon approaching. If you watch it, you really need to watch it with family and friends to understand the full meaning behind the holiday. They really nailed the holiday and the Mexican culture perfectly with this film. It’s no wonder it won an Oscar award.
This is an amazing example of what can be done -- completely believable and fantastical.

Fun fact: the voice actor for Mama Imelda was cast as the friend for Elle in Legally Blonde.
The animals are "alebrijes", that dog is a Xoloitzcuintle, and in the ofrenda we put all that our family liked when they were alive. México has a lot of traditions, but El día de muertos, not it's like Halloween, it's special , everything we do has a meaning: the salt, the candles, the flowers of "cempasúchitl", the "pan de muerto" and for us isn't a sad day, because we are happy of remember them, we dance, we remember all of our family members do...it's a beautiful day.
The mexican kids can understand, trust me!! Since we are little, our traditions are present in our lives ❤️🇲🇽

I hate how people underestimate children. They aren’t stupid, they may not understand every detail or hidden meanings all the time in movies but that dosen’t mean they don’t understand emotions or can understand that something is good or not. Pixar films were made to relate to both the young AND the old, which makes them so special and cherished because it bridges that gap between both ages.

When I first saw this movie I cryed so much during the scene where Miguel sings with Mama Coco. For me, that scene hit me hard because my great grandma's name was also Coco (Coco it's a surname for the people named Socorro), she sadly passed away when I was 9 years old. So this movie really has an especial place in my heart.
I was so emotional during the whole video, I love that foreigners can appreciate my culture through a movie so accurate like coco 7u7

My grandma was a lot like his Grandmother; a very tough Mexican woman. The way she yells at him “Apologize!” I get flashbacks from when I was a little girl. She died of Covid at 98 years old. 😓

I am from Mexico and it is one of our most beautiful traditions and I am grateful that PIXAR made this film so that other countries would understand a little more about our culture and how we love each other on the day of the exhibitions, as well as how we honor them these days.
Almost everything that you see is part of our culture and you can experience it if you ever come to visit us at this time.
In the Mexican culture, the women would take off their shoes or sandals and hit whomever was misbehaving. It's called La Chancla. The references in this movie to this are hilarious.

I truly love this movie.
The day of the dead is technically a thing also in some places in Europe. In Italy (at least in the region where I grew up) I think it is on November 1st and it used to be a holyday but the tradition kind of died out during the '90s. It wasn't as party-like as in this movie but it was still a day where families went to the cimitery and then spent the day together.
Children normally would receive gifts or candies in bags that are prepared in the house beforehand. The tradition is that if you've been a good child the dead will bring you gifts otherwise they'll bring charcoal. There is a type of candy that looks exactly like charcoal at first glance (it has some shiny dots because of the sugar, doesn't smell like charcoal, and doesn't leave dirt on your fingers) and one year my parents put that in my bag and I almost cried before I notices that they were candies.
We start celebrating on November 1st here in Mexico, too. On all saints day. All hallows day. Hallowmas. Whatever you want to call it. The day itself is a catholic holiday, not specifically Mexican, it's just that our day of the dead celebration is larger and festivities go overnight into the 2nd.

What’s interesting is that this was Pixar’s first animated musical.
Maybe that’s why the songs are actual part of the plot instead of characters suddenly breaking into song without prompting.
The characters here have a reason to sing; it’s to advance in the story (play a song to get the guitar, the music competition, getting attention of your idol, reawakening a memory) which I ultimately like better.
Pixar really did me dirty by letting me watch this in theaters because I was bawling my eyes out at the end😭😭
The thing that sucks about this movie, is that when you know the plot ... you cry harder than the girls watching it for the first time!

I just watched this movie for the first time last week . It was very touching, and that Ernesto was a dirty, ruthless piece of work 🥴 he really thought he wouldn’t have a run-in w/ somebody like Miguel & expose his true colors to the world .

Now every day of the dead here in Mexico we see this movie again and again and somehow it always make us cry though we remember our loved ones that passed away

I don't know if you'll read this a year later but... It wasn't all imagination (the colors, alebrijes, the costumes) it's all Mexican tradition. If you girls ever want to enjoy it, with all the colors, the music, the food, the skeletons, the alebrijes, the tradition, everything; come to Mexico before November, since Día de Muertos (Day of the death) is November 1st and 2nd. And the streets, graveyards and houses are decorated for the celebration. In Mexico of course we cry our past loved ones, but we also celebrate their lives. So, I invite you to live this tradition whenever you can. And believe me, you'll be welcome with open arms, as we Mexicans say "mi casa, es tu casa" (My home, is your home). I'm glad you enjoyed this movie.

I watch Coco every day because I like Coco so much and I love the idea that the Moto switch is you get to celebrate the people that’s from your family that died
You lot should also listen these songs in the movie in Spanish. They already sound good in English but they're so much better in Spanish. I absolutely love singing these songs to myself every now and then when I'm home and they make me feel more attached to my Mexican/Spanish heritage.
