The secret to a reliable 1000hp 9 second 1/4 Mile F90 M5 - Mr VANOS Forged Arrow Rods

  • The Twin Turbo V8 engine found in the F10 M5 and F90 M5 along with it's variants is an incredible design, capable of making monster power with very few modifications. However there is one weak point as the power starts to climb - the connecting rods.
    As standard especially on the F90 M5 the stock turbo's can produce so much torque that is bends a rod, potentially destroying the engine. Mr VANOS worked with Arrow to produce a drop in uprated forged connecting rod that is rated to take 1400NM of torque. This allows the engine to safely produce up to and over 1000hp, and run deep in to the 9s 1/4 miles.
    We visit Mr VANOS and talk to Steve about the process and details of the new rods, and see an engine be rebuilt using them.

    On evolve, it says the rods are rated at 1200hp and 1400nm. Is this at the crank? Up to what percentage of of 1200hp limit is considered safe for a car to be tuned to from a engine tuner's perspective?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Před 2 lety +2

      The rod is rated to 1400nm at the crank. This is what Arrow will guarantee the rod can take. Multiple cars have been tuned to over 1000hp with this setup.

  • @BorderlineBenny
    @BorderlineBenny Před 2 lety

    So it used to be the case the clutch would blow first and now it's the rods. So if you've boosted the turbo and replaced the rods.
    Does this then not mean that if you fix the rods, will you then be waiting to see the next part that blows after the rods?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Před 2 lety +3

      Technically you are correct but that isn’t the full story. As you increase power you find what fails, uprate those parts and then the next weakest link will fail as you continue to increase power. All part of development.
      With the MV1400 rods the engine assembly is now very strong. With cars making upwards of 1100hp so far. Remember these engine components are manufactured to meet OE level reliability at ~630hp, so nearly doubling that power output will invariably find some parts that are well past their design limit.
      But for anyone who is chasing more and more power this is something that is part of the game. What we have presented here is a reliable way to max out the stock turbo and make a 9.7s 1/4 mile pass over and over again. With a larger turbo 1000hp is a very achievable goal.
      Ultimately it is all about what your end goal is, feel free to contact us on sales@evolveautomotive.com for more information.

I was under the impression that we would only do rods, but fit standard rod bearings? Or do these rods come with aftermarket bearings because the stock ones are not good? Thank you!

    • @chancemccloskey5665
      @chancemccloskey5665 Před 2 lety +1

      The bearings are bad similarly to the S65, it’s not that they can’t hold power it’s just that they can wear prematurely due to high power or continued abuse, so stock bearings work with high power just need to be changed sooner

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Před 2 lety +4

      We haven’t done an S58 yet, so can’t say.
      You’ll need to do similar modifications to the engine, and the ZF8 in the G8X M3/M4 needs building to withstand 1000hp where the one in the F90 M5 does not, so that’s an additional cost.

    Hello my name is Jerome Parker my 2014 F10 M5 cut off at a stop sign in Feb, the local BMW specialist says my soft bearing failed thus the engine has failed… I am in a funk about this being I over-service my vehicle. Meaning I would have them change my oil every 2/3 thousand miles…. Just because.!… I called BMW NORTH AMERICAN, have not gotten a call back. I’m making $800 payments on a car I can’t drive, and my BMW S1000rr was recently stolen after 7 months of ownership!!!!! Leaving me completely without a vehicle!!! It makes me feel better when I tell my story, because there absolutely no way I can fix this problem.. I can only remind hopefully a miracle happens instead.. This is my 5th BMW, I Love the brand, was hoping BMW NA, would help as many other face the same issue according to the representative who took my complaint!! However, Prior to this issue there was no warning lights/ engine knocks/ warning messages: etc… It was suggested I spend 50k ($50,000) to replaced engine, starter/ flywheel: this video was EXTREMELY informative. I will have them take a look at it, fingers crossed 🤞🏾… it may help me get my car back on the road🙏🏽.
    P.S. Any suggestions on fixing this problem will be Gratefully Rec’d!

    Doesn't the s58 have the same rods as the s63? There's already one guy running 9.90@140mph on the s58 with stock rods czcams.com/video/55MGtObQo58/video.html
    Why would the same rods bend sooner on a v8 than an inline 6?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s possible to run a 9.9s 1/4 in an F90 on stock rods, but for how long? You’re taking unnecessary risks of failure.
      I’m sure Steve could also explain a few more reasons, but we have heard numerous reports of S58 cars also bending rods. One car doing it unfortunately doesn’t mean every car can. Manufacturing tolerances could just mean it’s a lucky car, or it’s one run from failure.
