  • In today's episode of casting with carney... we take a quick look at the diawa prorex rod and reel combo for musky (400). Overall great looking combo, I was very sad to see the telescopic rod only collapse down to about 8 feet in length but it is what it is. Make sure to leave a LIKE and SUBSCRIBE!

I’d recommended 80lb braid all day bud. That reel will be great for dive n rise, rubber, glides stuff to pick up slack quick and great for burning smaller blades and chatterbaits. But I’d also recommend filling half the reel with 15-20 lb mono line and then tie braid to that and fill up the rest of your spool with your braided line. This way you don’t break your wallet putting 300 yrd spools on your reel. Hope these tips helped and good luck out there. Hope you get a whale on the new combo 🤘🏼👍

Curious how well this setup will hold up to big rubber such as Mags and Pounders, I heard the Lexa on the muskie outdoorsfirst forums was always breaking and in for repair. Everyone usually recommends the Tranx 400, but this being 43 inches per crank in the 8:1:1 and also offered in the left hand, its offly tempting for me. "7:1:1 is perfect for just about everything want to fish." You should read more on the musky forums about ratios and inches per turn, you honestly want the fastest retrieve for just about everything with musky, you'll get more strikes and followups, speed is key. Unless reeling 10s or getting into the fall/winter months. But 7:1:1 is still a good ratio, I think you'll like it. By the way you do realize you got a pounder rod right? It being rated to cast an 18 oz lure, you should do 80 lb braid for throwing that size rubber. Some musky anglers even do 100 lb. Let me know how you like this combo since 1 month has passed since this review. The Prorex rod does look pretty nice, I heard whats nice about the prorex is its palmable comparable to the tranx. All in all the reel just has to hold up to the abuse, Lexa failed in that area, hopefully the Prorex succeeds. I do like Daiwa, I bought daiwa bg4000 combo for snook and loved it down in florida. Doug Wegner said the t wing system will help out big time during november/december months when things are icing up, less down time. It's great to see you moving over to musky fishing, we need fishermen in this sport and help it grow, I still like to bass fish too, but once you catch a big musky man, its a rush, nothing like it!

So... a little help. Braid can spin on your spool if it doesn’t have a hole to tie through. A way to stop this is to use a backing of mono under the braid. Also you can use it to fill up the spool by adding mono underneath your braid. Just when you go to put line on the reel start with mono and build up a good little base of let’s say catfish mono.... then tie your braid to the end of the mono and fill the rest with that 150 yards or 200 yards of braid. 👍

Just got mine today, in 8 1. Can't wait to catch a 50 river striper. The reel is absolutely fantastic. Wat a piece of work, just gorgeous. Tight as a drum, solid and smooth

Beautiful combo, i used to musky fish quite a bit, and you do need a fast retrieve for most musky lures. 7.1 is good for prop baits and big spinners and foot long swimbaits. Rod might be too long tho. As long as rod is stiff with backbone. Depends where you're fishing. If you're in a boat fishing back creeks and in the woods like Dale Hollow in Kentucky, that rod will be too long for getting under trees etc. On a open lake, I think you said Lake Erie, it would be OK. A word of advice tho, since you said you dont know a lot about musky fishing, You can fish till doomsday and not even get a follow. They are super hard to find, get them to bite, and even to get a follow. If you want action, target big pike instead. They are way way easier to hit. Your arm will fall off going after musky. They don't call them the fish of 10,000 casts for nothing. Just my 2 cents. Also about that reel. Did you know if it's difficult to crank over the handle from when you're in freespool, you can lift the thumbar freespool button back up, without turning the handle. Try it

How are you liking this rods castability? What is the lowest lure oz you’ve thrown successfully with it? Thanks.

Great review, what’s the model number of the rod? Where did you get the combo?

i’m not sure of the model number but is is a 9’5 Xtra Heavy, and the combo was bought from the pro tackle store in peterborough

@@castingwithcarney190 thanks for the review! They still have these rods (in July 2022) and I want to buy; but I am wondering if 8'6" collapses to 8' then "why telescoping?"... it also seems Daiwa stopped manufacturing these, many stores have it as "preorder" only, and almost zero reviews since inception in 2016.
For sure, this fake "telescoping" is sturdier than two-section rods.

If you don’t fill your spool all the way up casting will suffer.
