  • In conversation with ThePrint, retd. lt. gen. and ex-AMU VC Zameer Uddin Shah talks about the 2002 Gujarat riots and how the army had to wait for 24 hours before they could take any steps to control the situation. Shah also talks about the role of the Indian army in controlling such situations and why it is important for a soldier to separate belief from duty. In addition to that, he also talks about his first meeting with Smriti Irani and how she took an instant dislike for him. Ahead of the release of his upcoming book, Sarkari Musalaman, he mentions that there two kinds of Sarkari Muslims, government servants and derogatory types. He also recalls the times he spent playing tennis in AMU with his brother Naseeruddin Shah and how big a fan he is of his movies.

This man is clearly a gentleman! As we know, Irani was later kicked out from MHRD and shunted by Mr. Modi. This is what the PM had told him in the meeting. He just didn't want to be rude while revealing the details of why he felt "relieved" after meeting the PM , despite Irani's grotesque behaviour.

Poonam Abbi There were so many Hindu kings or rulers who were responsible for extreme atrocities against Buddhists. Following are few examples that are quoted from the source article:
      1. Adi Shankara, along with Madhva and Ramanuja, was instrumental in the revival of Hinduism through aggressive and violent means
2.Pushyamitra “destroyed monasteries with relics and killed monks of good conduct.
      3. Shashanka, the Shaivite Brahmin king of Bengal, and Shashanka,(the king of Gauda) had destroyed the Bodhi tree or ordered the mass destruction of all Buddhist images and monasteries in his kingdom. Shashanka tried “to have the image (of Lord Buddha at Bodhgaya) removed and replaced by one of Shiva”
      4. Hindu rulers such as Shaivite Mihirakula, Mihirakula, Suddhanvan, King Sudhanvan of Ujjain (instigated by Kumarila). destroyed or damaged Buddhist shrines , viharas, stupas and monasteries, or killed Kotis or exterminated Buddhists.?
      Destruction Buddhist shrines
      1. In Nalanda, numerous Buddhist shrines were destroyed and converted into Hindu temples.
      2. At Kushinara, where the Buddha had entered into Mahaparinirvana, the cremation stupa had been converted into a Hindu temple, and on top of it stood the temple of Rambhar Bhavani when
Cunningham discovered the site in 1860-61.
3.Caityas of Chezrala and Ter in Andhra Pradesh which are now Shiva and Vishnu temples respectively.
      4. The temple of Madhava at Sal Kusa, opposite Gauhati in Asam, was once a sacred shrine of the Buddhists
      5. The famous Jagannatha temple at Puri in Orissa was also originally a Buddhist shrine.
      6. The Vishnupada temple at Gaya was also once a Buddhist shrine.

Gen. Zameeruddin Shah should have walked his 3,000 troops into Ahmedabad as soon as all of them had mobilised at the airport; at least they could have saved some innocent lives. I do not agree with his decision to wait for 1 full day for the private trucks to come. Only the sight of 3,000 soldiers would have scared the hell out of the bloody mobsters who would have just run away.

Gujarat Police were never trained to tackle riots during Congress era i.e. 1947 to 2000 in spite of half a dozen riots that had taken place in the state….Why Modi will inflict injury of communal violence on his own govt which was gaining popularity due to restoration in quake devastated areas ...Godhara violence was a neatly executed satanic conspiracy of Ahmed Patel ( to unsettle the popular BJP govt of Modi and) become CM himself…..secondly big part of Police Strength was detailed to areas struck by devastating earthquake.....thirdly Army is a last option for any Administrator or CM or PM …..they look out for police, if it fails they try para-military, then comes the option of the Army......Modi had asked for Police help from 3 neighboring states , ruled by Congress Party, to tackle the riots , they refused....and this refusal was ill- intended....this refusal was meant for Modi's Gujarat to bleed more...so that Ahmed Patel gets chance to defeat Modi in election …….the Gujarati people were prudent , they chose only Modi, only Modi and only Modi !

I think it is very naive that Lt General after 16 years writes a book in which he created controversy by saying he he waiting for CM or the civilian state govt to provide the transport hence his troops Wasted 24 hours at the airport. Next he will expect CM to provide cooked meals for the troops. Someone should make it clear to him army has own transportation arrangements and also food arrangements he should have spoken to Ahmedabad GCO to arrange transportation. His chain of command Was not used to request transportation, he did not contact defense minister George Fernandis in advance to arrange civilian transportation then he assumes CM Modi will send him transportation by intuition. He does not assume full responsibility for his troops transportation which caused the delay then he creates masala in his book for media. Everyone knows whenever army goes on operations they have transportation core to arrange transportation, then his counterpart in Ahmedabad should have been advised by hum to arrange transportation bwhixh he does not do but goes to CM home at 2am for dinner, expecting him to arrange everything for him. Shameful excuse by the experienced general. Over and above misleading media to create this controversy. Hence there should have been enquiry on General Zameeruddin for not doing routine steps as part of his duties, hence causing delay of 24 hours.

what ever this bastard is saying is all rubbish......Had police force been biased the figure would have been much larger....The total casualties in 2002 riots was about 2300 out of which @ 1100 were Hindus and 1200 were muslims ...How could this happen if police force was Biased......This is totally bull shit...Dont fall prey to such false propoganda ....
In event of any such riots or calamaties it is routine for indian states to ask for help from neighbouring states ..gujarat Government had asked for help from rajasthan and MP Govt. ...Both the Congress ruled Governments denied the help....Now imagine 50,000 security personnels gaurding such a huge state of population of about 5 crores spread across an area of @ 200,000 sqkms...HAD POLICE BEEN BIASED THE FIGURE WOULD HAVE BEEN MUSH MORE ......IT COULD BE A STRAY INCIDENT ...BUT WHAT THIS KATUA BASTARD IS SAYING IS TOTALLY FALSE ...IT IS SHAME ON YOU THAT YOU ARE BELIEVING WHAT BULL SHIT HE IS DELIVERING

When the army provides emergency services during floods earthquake landslides riots in other parts of India why not in Gujarat.? The army has become corrupt with corruption at the highest level. And pandering to the whims of political leaders in return for favours is nothing new. After all all the soldiers of the INA troops who were truly patriotic were disbanded while those working for the British were retained by the nehru government. Wonder why!?

I want to comment on the General waiting for 24 hours for transport.
Army when moves for operations will have alternate plans to meet unforeseen situations .
The civil administration had failed and the army had been called to meet the situation. Why did he expect the civil administration to help with transport. He should have thought of alternate resource.
What was the size of the Ahemadabad city say 40 km by 40 km.. He could have asked the forces to walk and fan out in to the city.
If they walked the troops would have covered the city within a maximum of 6 hours.
He could have used the local military’s help to navigate and to provide few essential vehicles instead of waiting for 24 hours.
It is unbelievable how the General is blaming the civil administration for their failure when they had already owned up and called the army for help.
I am a veteran from the armed forces.

The jawans were not local Gujaratis, hence they did not have any idea where to go in the city.. Secondly no prior information about the situation in Ahmedabad and about the hotspots of
riots... Going by your advice means sending men to an urban forest with predators hiding in buildings and homes...

      Hello Sudeep LAVANIA
I did not suggest to move against hardened enemy army.
It is our own people/ mob. You fire one , the mob will run away as you had seen in the instant case.
My aim is amplify the army should have thought of alternate options. There is a provision for hiring transport. That could have been done with local army units. Our soldiers/ units are very adaptable and given a direction they would have achieved it.

A very badly conducted interview. General Shah is an absolute gentleman, erudite and strong. The treatment meted out to him by the MHRD reflects so badly. Although Zoom as he is called went there for a task and he did it well despite the delays by state administrators, I still always have this question, "who started the riots, was the burning of the karsevaks the start of the riots and why is it not spoken about by most journos (Zoom is not a part of this, he adddresses his task and he is right). "Two wrongs do not make a right" is the statement pushed by the pacifiers but I say that "two wrongs may not make a right, however it does help sending out the message to dissuade the aggressors from instigating another wrong. So, Never let a wrong go unpunished. Strike and strike hard, but make sure you are not the aggressor.
