The NCAA already fumbled it by allowing super teams to be built which destroyed parody, they made the championship game at travesty and continuing with the same half dozen teams winning all of the championships will just drive away all of the new fans. They will also fail to really build many new stars because a star cannot be born on an All-Star team, plus those Monopoly teams are only a few colleges and they're missing out on a chance to build fanbases from the other 350 D1 schools that would then follow their own star players to the WNBA.

Caitlin Clark is a marketing major and has been working with Excel marketing. She has built a brand and is putting on a marketing masterclass. I wonder how much of her stuff being ready to go was the Fever, and how much was Excel marketing. It looks to me like women coming out of college with NIL experience are going to be the driving factor for WNBA marketing until the WNBA starts to figure this out. If Clark/Reece/Brink/Buekers/Hidalgo/Watkins bring in enough fans and ratings the league will start making money and marketing will improve.

There are school systems, both public and private, who do an AMAZING job at non-official recruitment and hyping up the very youngest, teeny tiniest kids to come to their schools. Some organizations are really good at marketing and advertising and others just exist.

Great comments..but really sky wasnt sure on kamila or reese...kamila could of gone to L.A. and reese the mystics might of taken.. Also both had the same jersey number..so. I get they couldnt do that....But they could of pushed gear!! Plus tickets!!i cant figure out how to buy them so i gave up. You are totally right not having web sights and pr ready to promote. WNBA is totally not marketing...yes a kid could of put more info up. Only 1/3 of those drafted might make the teams..what a lose. They pick players on needs not commercial gain...but they coukd still promote them...rumor is Serena will own a new franchise team!! Could she push it?? Somebody needs to overhaul this especially like u said .

Good on you for being an original fan of WBB Ericka, I have been since the early 80s.
I'll share with you another peek under the hood of the broken bus called WBB... Women's basketball going nowhere has been much more about the psychology of sports fans and then, as you are looking at, about how self-serving the gatekeepers are.
    - You are 100% right that the billionaire owners will take a tax write-off as does the NBA and that this choice has harmed the WNBA immensely.
    - but that's not the fulcrum of the wnba's failure. The billionaires and the NBA will invest if they see potential, and now Caitlin Clark revealed that potential...
    - the WNCAA has undermined and is the number one problem for the WNBA. The wNCAA has been allowed to be run by gatekeepers, on the belief that they could just make money off of a few teams, and so the system has been broken with non competitive dispersal of talent for decades. They've buried the stars in the NCAA and that this is why the popularity of both the wNCAA and the WNBA never grew.
    - Stars are made in college and you can't make a new star really shine on an All-Star team. ( First because people will view that stars success as being due mostly to having a team full of five stars, secondly it's the same old teams doing this which reeks of monopolization, both of these things drive fans away.)
    - Caitlin Clark was brave enough to break the gatekeeper hold by remaining loyal to the people who had always built her up. By doing this, and simply being better, she gave the world a message- all while playing her own way that outshown everyone ever before her- (until the travesty of the final when finally they bludgeoned her with a ten 5 stars team. )
    - Her message has been known but somehow forgotten: People want to see an inspiring sports story.
They want to see somebody rise up.
They want to see a great champion who comes from the people and works on their own merit, or teams up with other regular players and through this rises to the top.
They don't want to see someone gifted opportunities, they want to see somebody who overcomes.
-This week we've seen a lot of people decrying the success of Caitlin Clark when the answer is right in front of all of us. She's successful because she is inspiring AND she backs it up by doing incredible things in her sport, things that no one has seen before. It was exactly the same way with Tiger Woods.
There are very few things more valuable than inspiration. (This may even go deeper, the more so when people have been losing their religion and have been inundated with negative news for years, a topic for another day.)
    - We've had just five teams win 70% of the championships in the wNCAA, these few teams can only bring a few million fans between them and are only interesting to the homers of those teams. These types of monopolies only destroy sports, just as the 1960s Celtics hold over talent nearly destroyed the NBA - until they got Red Auerbach 's back door dealings out of the draft and enacted a salary cap. Only then could the league grow - they had eight teams win championships in the 70s and a broad platform upon which to launch the superstars of the 80s.
    - The college gatekeepers primarily have been limiting the fuel (5 star talent), for the greater WNCAA fan base, to just a half a dozen teams out of 350 D1 schools! This is the fault of the WNCAA, whether through collusion or sheer lack of oversight.
    - The entire state of Iowa only has 3 million people and that includes the little babies, old geezers, and probably some cows and chickens. It's fair to say that Caitlin Clark brought in at least 10 million more than fans, who were not originally Hawkeyes, but simply fans of her incredible story of rising up on her own talent with a team of average players and a great coach.
    - That 10 million people is more than double what we would expect to watch a wNCAA final in the past... - Realistically Nike would not have put down that money if only 10 million people were interested though, it's probably 30 to 50 million. The extra 10 million views is for households... we haven't seen a viral athlete like this since Tiger Woods.
    - The WNCAA should wake up and structure for talent dispersal so we can then begin to see 5 stars on a wide variety of teams. This will then create unique stories. The Stars will make their own name, standing out, and ultimately pull many more college fan bases to each stars' future WNBA team, similar to the Hawkeye Nation that now follows the Fever ( but not the WNBA).
Picture this - had Paige Buecker's instead gone to her home state University of Minnesota, the even greater level of madness that would have happened first in the Big ten and then bringing a whole other State fan base to the tourney.
Now imagine dispersing 3/4 of the five stars on just UConn and South Carolina back to their home state colleges. That would probably bring in another 10 college teams with a unique story, with more colleges suddenly excited about their own star. You could be looking at a potential of 50 million more fans.
Of course we can't expect them to be Caitlin clark, but even if they were just half as inspiring another 25 million fans could be ready to buy those hard to find WNBA jerseys.
