Just curious, but why not cut the really rusted sections of steel out of the original frame (or at least treat the rust) before welding a steel plate over it? Wouldn't that rust continue to get worse over time, eventually eating through the welds as well?

    • @AutoRepairTips757

We used the same thickness metal, and we lost footage showing what we used for rust proofing. We used PPG DP On the inside and outside of the frame, that is some amazing stuff we sprayed metal years ago and threw it in a bucket of water for 30 days and it never even showed any signs of rust starting that is great stuff. It almost puts like a vinyl coating on the metal.

Bought a 4Runner from auction with a rusted out frame for dirt cheap (didn't know the frame was shot). In my case, the frame is beyond saving. I can push my finger through weak spots all over. But, I purchased a used frame that only had some rust in the same spot this one did. So doing about the same thing here to save that other frame. OUTSTANDING!
I implore you to wear a respirator next time grinding a fiberglass filler so you don't fill up your lungs with fiberglass. I love that you recommend the fiberglass and the aerosol rubber treatment that is really awesome.
My question to you is: why not grind out all the cancer from the frame? Are you not worried about some inside out right with the rust still there?

There was some video that did not turn out that showed the step on how to apply DP, that’s a rust protection coating that stops rust. You can spray this on metal and throw it in the ocean for 30 days and it won’t rust.

Ive done alot of rust repairs, first thing i do is cut out all the existing rust. Then i would clean inside the frame and since its a big hole in it spray some eastwood chassis paint in the hole it has a lomg hose you can spray up in the frame everywhere in boxes frames afer yiu clean it and dry it. Then id make the plate and weld it in then id make another plate to weld down onto the lca mount for more strength then after im done tgat id soray si e more eastwood inside frame and paint the outside with por15 chassis black spray paint. Leaving rust there is really a good way to just keeo everything rusting away on the inside of the frame.

Its kind of crazy to do all that work, grind down your welds, bondo the frame then spray rubberized undercoating that holds moisture and will rust underneath that rubber undercoating. Definitely feels like a flip kind of vibe

    • @masonbarto4003

The rubber undercoat can be ok as long as you clean up the rust well first

Nice job, couple of questions; why did you not cut around and out, the obvious through rust holes. Did you weldable zinc paint the back side of the plate you welded. Regardless it was a good looking repair and will last for years.
