In Memoriam: BJ Thomas Performs "Some Hearts Get All the Breaks"

  • This clip is different to anything I've done before. This is a song that I wrote when I was a songwriter and producer. My cowriter, Larry Jenkins and I wrote a song for former Blood Sweat and Tears lead singer, David Clayton-Thomas.
During the session Pete Drake offered to cover the song the next time he recorded with BJ Thomas.

My oldest brother was in High School in the late 60's-early 70's.He bought all B.J.Thomas 45 singles at the local corner drug store in Saginaw, MI. He played them over and over till they where white. And he bought them again and played till no end! That's when we lived in Michigan. All those records came back to the Central San Joaquin Valley in a small town near Fresno! Great memories! RIP Texan, B.J. Thomas!

Once upon a time, Houston had a great music scene. My fathers’ best friend from Austin HS was a young songwriter named Frank Zambon. His mother in law lived just a few houses down the street from me (where I still live today, in fact) but you folks know him as Mark James. He wrote a good hit for BJ Thomas called “Hooked on Feeling”, another one for Elvis, and a big hit for Willie Nelson as well. But you folks already know all that! I remember him visiting us when I was little, he seemed like a real decent guy. Also, my uncle’s best friend and best man at his wedding was Steve Tyrell- pretty well known singer of jazz standards and such. Another great guy!

Beautiful song done to perfection by Mr Thomas. When it started all I could think of was, "Did you really need all those strings?" :-)
I've forgotten who asked that. I think it was about He Stopped Loving Her Today. As I said, a beautiful song done to perfection.
I was shocked by the news of his passing. I wasn't aware of his lung cancer diagnosis so it caught me by surprise. I too am seventy-eight so each of these is a reminder of the fragile nature of life no matter how resilient we think we are.
At least his great recordings live on. Thanks, Joe.

My #2 choice: BJ Thomas - such an extraordinary voice - he always sent your emotions into high gear whatever he sang and #3: Engelbert Humperdinck. The man has an incredible voice. RIP Karen and BJ - the world misses you so much but endless thanks for your voices from Heaven itself. You are LEGEND. Thanks for the video.

Great song, great production, great vocals. Pete Drake just knew how to perfectly complement the singer and the song, he didn't do a lot here but what he did do is intrinsic. It reminds me of the long slide he did on Charlie Rich's "Most Beautiful Girl" , that single string slide up the fret board is an essential lick whoever does that song, it wouldn't be the same without it. Genius .
